I got my Galaxy Nexus yesterday and I love it. There's just a couple of things bugging me and wanted to see if anyone else was having the same problems and of course if anyone knew of any solutions.
1- Screen. The resolution is fantastic but i've noticed some banding in flat colours. It's most noticeable in light and mid greys. There is a strip that runs up the middle of the screen that is noticeably lighter that the rest of the display. This goes away on high screen brightness but is really quite hard to ignore at other times.
2- Notification LED. Why is there no native support for customising this in ICS!? Either I've missed it or Google have missed a trick. I got it working with an app from the market but it only worked while the apple was running in the background, if I dismissed the apple from the new task switcher... No more custom notification lights.
Anybody else having these issues?

To get the most out of your multicoloured LED you can use the Lightflow app which is available free from the market, to get this working properly on the Galaxy Nexus enable "Run in Foreground" in the general settings menu.

Sorry to bump but I'd really like the opinion of a few other Galaxy Nexus owners, especially about the screen.
I love this phone but I am considering taking it back because of the banding on the screen, it's not noticeable until there is a flat grey in an app and then it's quite visible as a lighter band up the centre of the screen.
Is this a fault or is it to be expected on sAMOLED screens? I've only had LCD before.

Either way there are issues with SAMOLED+ screens, there are people with the Galaxy S II and Droid Razr with screen issues too.
as far as I know, it is a common trait with Super AMOLED screens - had the same issue with my Nexus S, and with my friend's phones that have Super AMOLED screens.
The banding disappears if you have the screen at a higher brightness, so it does seem to be an issue inherent with changing the brightness/colour temp of the screen.
Also, AMOLED screens are susceptible to screen burn, which is why if you leave the screen on some white text on a black background, if you then switch to a screen with mostly grey elements you'll see a ghosted image of that text.

Seeing similar on my screen but it's not really noticeable unless the phone is on auto brightness or the lowest manual setting.
From reading other threads, sounds like the GSII has a similar problem. Looks like some people have been through a few phones before getting a "band free" unit.
You could try taking it back to a (willing) store for a swap - given the current stock levels you may have a few issues though and you may not get a unit without the banding anyway.
In terms of notification LED, wait a bit for some better third party apps to arrive. Not many (existing) phones use RGB coloured LED's or similar for notifications (Nexus One and Galaxy Nexus are the only two that quickly spring to mind) so it's possible Google didn't add support because of the limited use. ICS is in it's infancy and there's a lot of development to come (both from Google and third party dev's).

Personally, I'd just live with it - especially given that there's no guarantee you'd get a better model if you swapped it - hell you could end up with a worse screen!
I'm not sure it would be worth the hassle to send it back. This seems to be an issue to some degree in most SAMOLED screens. You might end up with a worse phone.
I seem to recall that many phone screens have artifacts at very low brightness settings.
This is exactly the same problem as I have. On low brightness it is visible but not on normal brightness.
I did have another nexus on order that I was going to compare it with but I decided to get an N9 instead as I don't need 2 nexus phones! I figure I can go try android beam in a phone shop lol
The question about sending it back is a tricky one - it's not visible With normal brightness so how can we be sure the replacement won't have the same problem? We can't.
yep. i have a vague banding when i look very closely.
solution ? keep my eyes more than 3 inches from the screen.

for the LED customisation get Light Flow from the market, works great for setting different colours for all sorts of things.

on auto-brightness i can notice it (if i look very hard) on the calendar app.
pump the brightness up to about 85% and go back to the calendar app and i cant see it ... but now my eyes hurt

85% in an unusable brightness for eyes and for battery, so the problem isn't fixable in an easy way. sincerely I
don't want a defective phone and get its defect as a feature.

i had problem like this on my atrix too...( i think most of atrix owners noticed that too )
light grey.........
the only common thing between atrix & GN is Pentile matrix....
i dont know this is the reason...
i just want u to know that you are not alone...

i just picked a random setting to prove/disprove the brightness thing. to be honest i REALLY have to look for these bands on auto-brightness .....
just tried 50% (still too bright in my opinion) and i still cant see banding. nor about 40%.
switched back to auto (which must be only about 20%) and they are there is i get really close and squint.
Seriously .... wouldnt let them worry you !

I have just completed a 3hr car trip using Google navigation and noticed the banding on auto resolution with it disappearing on bright vivid colours or dark/blacks. Thinking of asking phones4u to check out others for a possible swap.
When the phone was on charge i didn't notice any status light or none flashing when a txt was received. Should there be?

definitely seen an LED flashing for notifications. surprising large LED and at the BOTTOM of the phone !
I just bought a Galaxy Nexus from Handtec, and I notice that there are lines on the screen that resemble the texture of linen. It's not as noticeable when the brightness it set to max, but when it's darker the lines are very visible.
For other Gnex owners, is this normal? Or maybe this is the effect of the penTile?

This is because AMOLED screens use organic diodes that are more 'noisy' the less brightness there is. That does not mean it actually is more noisy, it simply means that your eyes are able to detect the noise in lower brightness while not as well when the screen is bright.
AMOLED is a funky technology, it's diodes 'age' and their colors have a short transfer period (sometimes if you have a screen turn gray, you can see the previous screens ghost for a short time in low brightness settings).
But the flaws don't outweigh the gains of AMOLED producing the most vibrant colors, contrast and saturation there are at the moment. I love it.
Even though i had an amoled phone before i got the Galaxy Nexus - my Desire was amoled - this effect wasn't very noticeable. Was having the same doubts about the Nexus, thank you for clearing it up.

The ghosting is a bit annoying, but strangely I've come to like the 'linen texture'. When it's subtle.
It almost seems as if by design on the app developer's side.

Hello, I'm total agree with you!
but my preoccupation about it dissapeared when I realized that the screen rotates extremly slowly. (galery, web browser, pdf reader...) with everything.
Sometimes even don’t rotate. I have deactivate all screen animations and the same duration. (2 seconds or more)
My nexus s was much faster with a beta rom with android 4.
Therefore I'm much more worried about this possible issue.
Do you have the same problem?

The rotation delay is intentional. There are some ROMs (see Paul's MCR one) that speed it up a lot.

some people (like me) like it when the slightest tilt doesnt change orientation, its better now that its a more deliberate action.
Whilst on the screen issue...
Does anyone have or have experienced a purple haze in the screen? On my device it a purple haze like colour in the bottom right corner. This changes further up the screen until it becomes (from what I can tell) a normal colour. Hardly noticeable until the screen is dimmed, then quite apparent.
I've arranged a return as I've only had it 14 days. Just wondered if this should be expected...

Yes! Except on my screen its noticeable more on the left hand side of the phone. Is this sort of thing normal for this device?
****! I returned mine to Expansys cause i had the same issue and i tough my phone was damaged! Keep it mind my last device was the iPhone 4 which had a pretty good screen! I really don't know if i should keep this device now since you guys say its normal! My friend has a Razr and his whites backgrounds are amazing and on my Gnex they look like my screen is damaged unacceptable for a device i paid top dollar for!
I would advise you to keep it! At first it seemed awkward, but now i dont even notice it. And the fact that the black is actually unlit is simply amazing. I always look into my apps just to see the amazing contrast between the lit and unlit areas of the phone. And when you set the brightness up, you wont even see the textile lines. Trust me, it is worth it for an HD amoled screen, ICS, and a top of the line nexus phone that will always be up to date. BTW if you get the Razr instead of this nexus, i have no words...

Hello. So this is my 6th GNexus that I received today, because I just seem to be getting phones with the same dark screen (in my eyes they are dark). This is at 25% brightness.
Or maybe I'm used to my first brand new one that was just perfect to me? It was naturally bright. The current one I have seems good, but the keyboard is darker and in the notification greys and browser bar grays u can notice the color differences. When I go to a website that's background is reddish/organish it's pretty noticeable there.
As of me typing this, I spoke to Verizon and said if on my 7th GNexus (next one coming Thursday 3/29) had the same issue with the screen they'd be consulting it with Samsung to see if it's a software issue or the LED inside the screen is messed up or something.

It's at 25% brightness and I've held not one but two GNex in my hands that looked fine at 25%. Something is wrong.

In case I'm still being looked upon as a troll, does anyone know the symptoms for a "bad" screen? I searched and read the thread about what's okay and not for a Galaxy Nexus screen but seems like I have some good stuff and some bad stuff, which is confusing.

Anything odd in the color of the yellow coins in Temple Run?
Red and Brown seem odd to any of you?

You have the brightness at 25% though? If the screen on another one looked fine at 25% (maybe a demo in the store?) maybe you should think about the lighting where you used it. If it was inside and fine at 25% but you are using yours outside at 25% then that is likely the problem. The brightness needs to be higher in brighter rooms / brighter days.
Try setting it to auto and see if it works fine for you that way. If it does, then you are using it as intended AND it works for you, so no worries. Remember, it is an AMOLED display and is designed to be more power efficient than other displays, so having it on auto should be just fine.
I personally set mine to 20% on another phone (totally different type of display, though the backlight itself might be similar, IDK) and its fine until a bit of sunlight hits it. I then switch it back to auto when I exit a building or enter a place with those obnoxiously bright halogen lights.
I suspect that is the issue you are having, how you are using it vs how it is designed to be used.
I know what you mean. But the 3rd GNex and the first I had, everything on the phone was literally brighter on 25% brightness. So I guess every phone has a different screen? (The phones with working/good) screens.
What I mean by "brighter" is for example the background of the keyboard set when your going to type a message, it varies a lot in brightness from phone to phone.
Does anyone else experience eyestrain with devices that have the HD Super Amoled screen?
I notice after about 10 - 15 mins of use, I get dizzy and my eyes hurt like they are being crossed or something when using the galaxy s3 or galaxy note, my old galaxy s2 skyrocket doesn't bother me though....
I've tried to turn the brightness down all the way, using the device at different distance to no avail.
Any possible solutions to remedy this? or am I going to have to sell my new S3 like I did my galaxy note? :/

I've actually noticed a decrease in eye strain coming from an LCD screen on my atrix. LCD screens are constantly flashing, and the screen on my galaxy s3 is super clear for me almost no eye strain. Its probably personal preference though.

I've actually experienced the opposite as my first android device was an atrix....
I think it may have something to do with the 1200 x 800 resolution on such a small screen because If I turn up the resolution on my PC HD monitor to something like 1600 x 1200 for example, my eyes start to hurt.
I was actually going to post a new great until I saw this. I came from retina displays and my eyes are sore after I look at the screen for over 10 minutes on my GS3. Kinda concerning!! Might have to switch back to an apple product. I was getting use to droid too. :-/

I got vertigo/migraines about a month after getting my S3. I had a number of medical tests to see what was causing it - but even after new glasses I've narrowed it down to the S3 display being too strong for my eyes. I'm going to sell mine and get a replacement with a duller screen.

I also immidiately noticed eye fatique after getting Galaxy s3, particularly in my right eye. It started only getting worse, and coincidently only when I was using Galaxy. Other lcd devices such as older 3gs never bothered me at all. Surpisingly majority of reviews call the display stunning quality, but its pretty dim, practically unusable outside and colors are unnaturally oversaturated, all of which didnt bother me that much as long as my eyes wouldnt hurt so much. I started reading more about specs in Super amoled technology, but nothing pointed out to potensial issues, than I googled galaxy s3 refresh rate, and the first video from the search result comparing s3 to the iphone, provided a major clue. The poor quality camera was picking up horrible flickering from galaxy, but iphone screen didnt flicker at all. It instantly brought me back to old CRT days, and I also remember getting dizzy from such displays running at low refresh rates of 60mhz. Back than bumping up refresh rate to 75mhz conciderably dicreased eye strain. I took the video to the store, sales person was suprised that I was returning such popular product, but its been a day since my exchange for another brand and eye strain is gone. The issue maybe overlooked as it affects low percentage of people, but if you have sensitive vision, than you'd be much better off with non hd amoled technology
Could it be the brightness?
I'm sure your not holding it against your nose while watchin you tube, but maybe its the overall brightness of the screen thats getting to you? I use a powersaver app that has a black screen filter that dims it out a good little bit, maybe something like that could help, or a matte finish screen protector...the anti glare ones I think.
Use the "Screen Filter" for use at nights.
Set brightness to 0, and enable filter. I set mine at 48.6% and 36.9% (created two widgets with these percentages) and use either as needed.
Set your brightness lower. It's the brightness of your screen. I have the same problem before turning down the screen

Keep phone at safe distance from face. Try a dark theme or inverted apps, or both they will most likely reduce eyestrain as well as save battery.

Seems ok to me with brightness anywhere from dimmest to 50%.
hmm, can't say I've experienced any strain.
The cm10 rom is extremely bright too, at half, I started getting headaches but on stock, I can state at near brightest all day.

Hi all,
There are a lot of users who feel uncomfortable with AMOLED displays (not all of them, for example sgs2 is not affected). They can struggle with head ache and eye strain. You can google "galaxy s3 eye strain" for example or watch how AMOLED blinks through photo/video camera (there are tons of youtube videos). This effect apperars only when screen brightness is not at maximum level. The nature of that is the mechanism used for brightness control. Instead of forcing the pixels to glow at less brightness they force them to blink very fast. The faster pixel blinks - the brighter it seems to the user. The downside of this is that the whole screen blinks as an old CRT monitor which causes this negative effect.
I found an app which could help us to workaround this issue. I filed a feature request. So if you are interested you can add yourself to wathcher list and post a comment here - https://bitbucket.org/VitoCassisi/lux/issue/38/lux-auto-brightness-feature-request-for
This should not take a lot of time since you can authorise there with your google/facebook/twitter or other account.
Wow! I switched the screen to "natural", the problem with oversaturared, too rich colors was solved. I had to keep the brightness low so color pictures aren't too bright, but this made reading text on white backround unpleasant. Of course now I have to find new brightness levels (what brightness levels do you guys use for day and night?)
PS: Samsung has been doing similar tricks with the colors in their TVs. Some series 6 TVs made the picture look like it was from a heat sensor in dynsmic mode, and this was their default mode.
PPS: Mobile screens suck. LCDs have washed out blacks which strains the eyes, and AMOLEDs don't care about correct colors which makes you duzzy.

The poor quality camera was picking up horrible flickering from galaxy, but iphone screen didnt flicker at all. It instantly brought me back to old CRT days, and I also remember getting dizzy from such displays running at low refresh rates of 60mhz. Back than bumping up refresh rate to 75mhz conciderably dicreased eye strain. I took the video to the store, sales person was suprised that I was returning such popular product, but its been a day since my exchange for another brand and eye strain is gone. The issue maybe overlooked as it affects low percentage of people, but if you have sensitive vision, than you'd be much better off with non hd amoled technology

You are absolutely right. S3 screen flickers a lot. Try to move it quickly in front of your eyes, move your eyest when looking at it, or move your finger fast in front of the screen. I certainly do notice it.
What other phones have better displays? Sony? HTC?
I have a solution to resolve galaxy S3 scren flickering: set brightness to max in settings, install an app like "Screen Filter" (one with black-white rectangle) and decrease brightness there, in the app.
Flickering gone!

Most of phone LCD screens are not affected by flicker. Even some amoled displays too. For example old HTC Legend and galaxy S2.
Galaxy note 3, 4, Galaxy s4, 5 are also affected. I strongly recommend you not to buy any new samsung phones equipped with AMOLED screens.
Now with this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vito.lux software you can get rid of screen flickering issue. Automatic brightness adjust will also work.
When you go into LCD Test (*#0*#), I notice that the brightness is not really all that uniform on the display. If I bring the device close to my face I see the brightness as same and when I extend the phone further away from I can see a little difference of brightness (very minute difference; extremely hard to tell unless you play with the different brightness modes). To appreciate the difference you need to squint your eyes. Am I trying to be too nit-picky?
Okay, my eyes are playing with me; just washed my eyes and everything looks normal, what AMOLED should look like, early mornings, lol :silly:

yeah seems you're trying really hard to find any imperfections. "extremely hard to tell, play with brightness modes, squint eyes etc"
should i do this under a full moon or candle light?
i usually stay away from these threads but just found all the conditions you mentioned funny. just use your phone under normal conditions. i havent noticed a single flaw... cause im not looking & digging for them.
you have three threds open discussing screens, mura & audio problems... seems like maybe you're trying to convince yourself or others about something?

Perhaps, I know I paid too much, and finding flaw's like these shouldn't be so easy. I mean, I've been through '3' Note 2 already, currently on my 3rd Note 2, and am I trying to mend my relationship with the Samsung Company, especially after facing more or less similar experiences on the S2 and Note 1. I know my AMOLED display is fine, but physical things like chrome-paint finish, and elevated home button are things I really hoped Samsung would improve their quality-control on; pretty soon, they will loose business as a result of this. I made threads not only to share my insight, but to also have an open discussion about everything I have come across with the Note 2. Not surprising, many have seemed to confirm the same things that I see. So, I'm just joining the bandwagon and moving along. :good:
I think I'm going blind because im very satisfied with screen on my note or maybe I'm not that picky. I be happy if it last next 2-3 years or until my next impuls buy.

I put the brigher note app on mine and I love it .Seemed to help the whites look better also.
I don't think I can do that.
