Rooted with Gingerbreak and no unlocking the bootloader or doing anything irreversable?

I don't think Gingerbreak will work. Zergrush works on 2.3.4 though and is a simple one click process.
It's not as simple as replacing the camera app. You need the whole new firmware to get 720p recording. 2.3.4 can be rooted easily.
You can root 2.3.4 via http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582 ...Simply download a file and extract + run the script...Easy.

I see. 2.3.4 is not yet out for R800at, right?
Thank you for all your help. I didn't really want to update cause of the hoops id have to jump through (how it'll fill up internal memory and probably erase my stuff), but if I must...

Nope but you can flash the generic NA version instead using flashtool. No at&t bloatware. Though I don't see a 720p option in the camera settings.

Would be good to have it for those who want to saty on 2.3.3 just to keep PSXperia

Thanks. Will I lose HSPA+ speeds? I guess I would download the R800i FW, right?

Hello,
Does anyone have the ftf file for the new update 2.3.3 on R800x Verizon?
Many thanks.
I think I saw one on the r800x state of development page, but I thought I saw on another post that the 2.3.3 Kernel is not included and the 2.3.3 is not anywhere to be found. You can flash the 2.3.3 ftf but you will still have 2.3.2 kernel I dont think wifi will work that way and emulators may play slow.

I'm searching for a full Verizon 2.3.3 ftf flash as well. So please post back if you see anything.
As far as I can see there is not a 2.3.3 full flash due to the way the 2.3.3 update is, the kernel in the update has not been easy for devs to obtain and its still something thats being working on.. getting the full 2.3.3. When its available u can bet ill be flashing asap!
So, is there any way to update it?
I can't use the 3G network because im not in US.
Many thanks man.
For an unlock bootloader r800x , the only way I have found to work is by re locking you bootloader and doing OTA update. I know you said you cant use 3g so Im not sure because I dont think wifi would download the update. Dont try the OTA if your bootloader is unlocked cuz your phone will brick, there is a fix for ota bricked phones though.
Until there is a full ftf heres what I did
I flashed Doomlords V4 kernel for 4.0.1.A.283 firmware, and then flashed the 2.3.3 system.img from the state of development page. Everything besides the back camera and wifi, those dont work. But the front camera works without error and the kernel runs 2ghz and its nice being able to doube cpu , FPSE is still perfectly smooth at 1024mhz which is nice because if you flash the same 2.3.3 system img youll still have 2.3.2 kernel and FPSE will run slow.
I would do something like this until an official 2.3.3 full flash is available. Seemed like the best route for stock, and you can theme the icons and status bar to something else to ditch the stock look
Good news for you all! R800x can update by SEUS and wotan client.

Awesome! Now all we need is the kernel source to OC this...
I have just rooted using Superoneclick with ZergRush, (bootloader is still locked), and uninstalled some of the bloat (video unlimited, timescape, etc....), using Titanium.
My question is that when Sony Ericsson release an OTA update (i'm currently on 2.3.4). Will I be able to update without any problems?
If not how would I go about updating?
I have an unbranded generic R800i (UK model).
Thanks.
(sorry if this question has been answered before).

Look in the android development section of the forum depending on which play you have you'll find the forums has the firmware someone which you need. Also download a program called flash tool, as this is used to install firmwares to your phone (providing your boot loader is unlocked).

From what I've heard, you are correct, sir. What he need to do is downgrade firmware, then used either DoomLoRD's rootkit, or superoneclick to root.

install flashtool on your pc
flash a custom kernel e.g. doomlord v11 to the phone
this will root the phone
just search up the zergrush method
fives you root in like 2 mins!!
After the 2.3.4 I downloaded today, I'm experiencing bad battery life. Is this just because I just updated or what?

Bump.
Id like to hear what others feel.

My battery life is slightly better but gtalk doesnt work at all

The update breaks some google apps (verizon is blaming google of course) and they say they are "looking into it" my advice would be to stay with 2.3.3 if you don't want to unlock and root
You can root on 2.3.4?
If so how

What I did was restore the 2.3.3 ft, root it but did nothing else to it and then allowed the update to install. Maybe because I have a unlocked boot loader, but my 2.3.4 stayed rooted.

Mine as well this method does work.
And yes my battery life is TREMENDOUSLY WORSE with 2.3.4, and I also have some connectivity issues occasionally.
I'm just curious but has anyone uncovered a way to root the Xperia play on Verizon running 2.3.4. The only way I've found is to downgrade to 2.3.3

If you have the RootXperia.zip from Blagus (original clockwork mod recovery boot.img thread), you can flash that via Clockwork Mod. Make sure you have CWM installed first (unlocked bootloader).
Sent from my R800x using XDA
There really is no point in using 2.3.4.
Unless you love new bloatware, no root, and many other problems
Use flashtool to get back to 2.3.3 and enjoy the fun!
i have root on 2.3.4 but i can't remember the steps. and yes there is no point on having 2.3.4
If you flash to 2.3.3, root it, and then update to 2.3.4 you will have rooted 2.3.4
Thats the good news
The bad news is, 2.3.4 doesn't connect to Google's servers properly (rooted or not) so you annoyingly can't use gtalk, and a couple other features, you have to manually refresh your Gmail, calendar, etc (It does it once per day otherwise), can no longer "buy apps" on the web and have them pushed to your phone automatically. And some apps with push notifications no longer notify.
Is the only way to unlock the bootloader for the r800x to use the paid method from unlock-bootloader.com ?
Sent from my R800x using xda premium
If you unlock your bootloader you can flash Super User zip from
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
That is the classic and easiest way to root a device with an unlocked bootloader
Just instal it in recovery and your good to go!
Yes for the R800x the only BL unlock method is for 24$
I'm on 2.3.2, does 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 have access to the PS Store app?
I had thought about updating to a newer version, but damn, I can't believe all those issues with 2.3.4

You should ftf to 2.3.3. It is the most stable Gingerbread version for the R800x.
Or you can always use UK ROM
I have rooted my R800x wth the original gingerbreak exploit chew

I really want 2.3.4. I couldn't give less f*cks about bloatware. They do nothing. I want the screenshot and other things they added. But Doom never updated his kernel to support the camera. Oh well.
