I'm just curious but has anyone uncovered a way to root the Xperia play on Verizon running 2.3.4. The only way I've found is to downgrade to 2.3.3

No current way.

If you have the RootXperia.zip from Blagus (original clockwork mod recovery boot.img thread), you can flash that via Clockwork Mod. Make sure you have CWM installed first (unlocked bootloader).

There really is no point in using 2.3.4.
Unless you love new bloatware, no root, and many other problems
Use flashtool to get back to 2.3.3 and enjoy the fun!
i have root on 2.3.4 but i can't remember the steps. and yes there is no point on having 2.3.4
If you flash to 2.3.3, root it, and then update to 2.3.4 you will have rooted 2.3.4
Thats the good news
The bad news is, 2.3.4 doesn't connect to Google's servers properly (rooted or not) so you annoyingly can't use gtalk, and a couple other features, you have to manually refresh your Gmail, calendar, etc (It does it once per day otherwise), can no longer "buy apps" on the web and have them pushed to your phone automatically. And some apps with push notifications no longer notify.
Is the only way to unlock the bootloader for the r800x to use the paid method from unlock-bootloader.com ?
Sent from my R800x using xda premium
If you unlock your bootloader you can flash Super User zip from
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
That is the classic and easiest way to root a device with an unlocked bootloader
Just instal it in recovery and your good to go!
Yes for the R800x the only BL unlock method is for 24$
I'm on 2.3.2, does 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 have access to the PS Store app?
I had thought about updating to a newer version, but damn, I can't believe all those issues with 2.3.4

You should ftf to 2.3.3. It is the most stable Gingerbread version for the R800x.
Or you can always use UK ROM
I have rooted my R800x wth the original gingerbreak exploit chew

Yes, I believe it is. It is so well worth it though
I really want 2.3.4. I couldn't give less f*cks about bloatware. They do nothing. I want the screenshot and other things they added. But Doom never updated his kernel to support the camera. Oh well.

Sure have, best $24 I've ever spent for android. I've mostly ran cm7 or cm9 since I've become quite use to them, but since unlocking it I can't even imagine how I went with just root for so long

Is there any way downgrading from 2.3.4 to 2.3.2?
I have a locked sim card. So i cant unlock the bootloader. And no good enough toturial on Remote Unlock.
Can i use flash tool to downgrade?
Sent from my R800i using xda premium
Don't think it will work.. Surely the kernel will not be compatible with 2.3.2 because it will still have the 2.3.4 one.. You can only flash kernel with unlocked bootloader.

Ya you can use flashtool to downgrade no problem

Flashtool replaces the kernel too.
flashtool 2.9.1 will flash and downgrade without bootloader, think of it as the PCCompanion
How do i remove root? Want the 4.0 update. But do we really get. Maybe we get it. But what if Sony Ericsson means that. We will make ics for Xperia PLAY?
I want original ICS. From SE
Btw could some one upload 2.3.2 link. And howto video? Locked sim card. It failed

calm down dude.
I dont get why you want to downgrade anyways? Why dont you just stick to 2.3.4?
Yay
it worked. but its an UK ftf. does this go away when i gingerbreak. then ota root keeper? does it update to my original language. cant find Norwegian in Languages on my Xperia PLAY 2.3.2
Go to wotanserver.com and find your version then use gingerbreak if it's 2.3.2 or zergrush exploit if it's 2.3.3 or higher. They should have your region.

can downgrade sure CONFIRM!
May I know which process you use to downgrade to 2.3.2.
Wontanserver for sure. Good program, downloads and installs any firmware you want.
I have just rooted using Superoneclick with ZergRush, (bootloader is still locked), and uninstalled some of the bloat (video unlimited, timescape, etc....), using Titanium.
My question is that when Sony Ericsson release an OTA update (i'm currently on 2.3.4). Will I be able to update without any problems?
If not how would I go about updating?
I have an unbranded generic R800i (UK model).
Thanks.
(sorry if this question has been answered before).

The update breaks some google apps (verizon is blaming google of course) and they say they are "looking into it" my advice would be to stay with 2.3.3 if you don't want to unlock and root

What I did was restore the 2.3.3 ft, root it but did nothing else to it and then allowed the update to install. Maybe because I have a unlocked boot loader, but my 2.3.4 stayed rooted.

You have to unlock your bootloader because that ROM requires you to flash a custom kernel.
The thread explicitly states you need an unlocked bootloader, yet you still have to ask?

Eh, maybe a bit harsh. In OP's defense, most of the talk around here about bootloader unlocking is concerning ICS ROMs. Probably just wanted to make sure since that ROM is based on stock.
Actually the rom might work witn unlocked boot loader, check out the 54 page

Hi everyone. I completely apologize for this question as I am absolutely new to Android and to unlocking a phone. I just bought a R800x Verizon Xperia Play for the sole purpose of being able to play emulators. I will not be activating it to use as a phone. I have read as much as I can and am still a little confused in regards to being able to unlock the bootloader and install roms.
If the bootloader message says No, am I not able to unlock it or install roms at all?
If it says yes, can I install any rom, or am I limited to what I saw as Cola and a few others?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Anyone help me out. Or can I keep it locked but install cola?
You can.unlock the bootloader I have mine unlocked using sonys unlock method but.if you wish to.stay with a locked bootloader yoj can.install cola but you'll have to.root 2.3.3 install clock work mod.recovery I my.self.am.vefy glad I unlocked my.bootloadef and since yoj habe.no.intentions of using the phone side yoj could install numeruous amounts of gsm roms
