ok well you need a unlocked bootloader or you need to downgrade. press the thanks button and ignore the post above.

Look in the android development section of the forum depending on which play you have you'll find the forums has the firmware someone which you need. Also download a program called flash tool, as this is used to install firmwares to your phone (providing your boot loader is unlocked).

From what I've heard, you are correct, sir. What he need to do is downgrade firmware, then used either DoomLoRD's rootkit, or superoneclick to root.

install flashtool on your pc
flash a custom kernel e.g. doomlord v11 to the phone
this will root the phone

just search up the zergrush method
fives you root in like 2 mins!!

I don't think Gingerbreak will work. Zergrush works on 2.3.4 though and is a simple one click process.
It's not as simple as replacing the camera app. You need the whole new firmware to get 720p recording. 2.3.4 can be rooted easily.
You can root 2.3.4 via http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582 ...Simply download a file and extract + run the script...Easy.

Nope but you can flash the generic NA version instead using flashtool. No at&t bloatware. Though I don't see a 720p option in the camera settings.

Although why you would want to root and not do anything else is a mystery.
Did you mean to say what can you do besides root? In that case, we would need to know what model of phone you have in order to polnt you in the right direction.

Even I had the same questions..
I'm on an R800i ..
Android: 2.3.4
Build: 4.0.2.A.0.62
I just got the phone this week, so I'll be happy with the stock rom for a few months..
All I wanna do is root it, so I can remove the bloatware..
(If possible, without having to unlock the bootloader for now)
My last phone was the LG P500 .. and all I needed to root that was run the gingerbreak apk.
Any chance of that working here?
Also, there is a sticky in the dev section for how to root, but that now redirects to a page [WIP] ClockworkMod Recovery - FreeXperia page..
So really confused..
Do I install CWM and then flash that file for rooting?
(is it possible to install cwm without rooting?)
Or do I root it using some other method, and then flash CWM using what that thread says?
Uber confused..
it is not possible to root Rombuild .62 you need to downgrade your rom to.40
dang..
and for downgrading I'd have to use flashtool, right?
wouldn't that format the phone as well?

Root Without Fastboot

Right, problem is, my PC has finally decided to stop doing what what it's supposed to. More specifically, it doesn't put my phone in fastboot mode anymore.
My question is, how do I root on the latest GB firmware? If I root on when .42 firmware, can I flash the .64 firmware while unticking the kernel option? Is that where root is?
I can usually do stuff without asking questions, but this problem is quite specific and couldn't find an answer Google-ing.
Sent from my R800i using XDA
Flash the rootxperia.zip in recovery. Then, uninstall superuser and install a newer version of it from google play/market. Press thanks if I helped.
Note: This can be used on any Gingerbread firmware. Also, root will not carry over if you use flashtool.
Can I flash the .64 firmware then flash that?

Sounds like a USB cable problem, or maybe a USB port problem.
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk 2
It's a USB port problem.
I was using the dsixda kitchen when my computer switched itself off. I tried the same thing and it switched off at exactly the same point. Ever since then my main USB port stopped working (it was working minutes before). I can't get the drivers for fastboot installed on the other USB port.

no regardless you need root which is just a simple click you can't get CWM without it the auto staller will not work if you do not have root because it needs su permission
The only way to get root on the .62 firmware with a locked bootloader is to flash .42 and then flash the .62 firmware .zip file which is buried somewhere in android development. Since you can't flash a custom kernel(which root your rom anyways) you can't get into recovery on .62 as installing recovery requires root.
My bootloader is unlocked.
Sounds like a catch 22 situation.
I'll just stick with what I'm on now and wait for an ICS FTF.

It's not a big enough problem to get everything set up on somebody else's computer.
Does anybody know what the driver is called? Maybe I'm going to the wrong folder when trying to manually update it.
Also, when I uninstall the drivers, I get the S1 Boot (or whatever it's called) thing installed but that changes to something like SEMCflash. Is that supposed to happen? Because I read that you need update the S1 one, which disappears/gets replaced.
Sent from my R800i using XDA
If you root it, then OTA, you keep root. Only problem is you can't OTA with an unlocked bootloader.
Try with a different PC?
The drivers are on the Sony unlock site.
I can't install the drivers because the S1boot thing changes to SEMCflash. I get told that it contains no info about my phone or it can't find a better match.

I've tried that, that's when I get the messages. When I choose the driver file it says it doesn't contain any information about my device.
I did the same thing with my other USB port and it worked fine til it broke. So why it wont work I have no idea. I still don't know how cooking a ROM can break a USB card.

For some custom roms you need to flash kernels via fastboot and for this you need unlocked bootloader.
if bootloader it's locked use Google and search there is official way to unlock but you will lose warranty and drm.

Considering you already have flashtool and your desired kernel follow this :
1) Plug in your phone in fastboot mode [S-Off, hold menu key and plug in to PC]
2) Place you .img on your desktop
3) Open up flashtool, select fastboot mode and select flash kernel and select it from the desktop
4) Once kernel is flashed un plug your device restart it open up CWM and flash desired ROM.

You have to unlock your bootloader because that ROM requires you to flash a custom kernel.

Eh, maybe a bit harsh. In OP's defense, most of the talk around here about bootloader unlocking is concerning ICS ROMs. Probably just wanted to make sure since that ROM is based on stock.
