What battery temp is normal and abnormal? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have tried countless roms, and kernels over the past 6 months. It has become my new addiction since I stopped smoking! Haha. I'm running samurai 1.4 and my battery is hitting 100 degress F. Mind you, this is on the charger. Anyone know what's good and when to be concerned?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

If you use your phone and have it overclocked while its charging its gonna get hot. (I assume ur overclocked since u have that kernel)
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium

Yeah, its overclocked but nothing crazy. Usually keep it at 1100 since I use it so much. I suppose this was a pointless post. If its gonna get hot, then its gonna get hot. Thanks for the reply.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

System panel is a great app to check out...you can monitor CPU as well as battery temperature. If your pushing your CPU, its gonna get hot, like previously stated...but maybe if you monitor some things you may be able to cut down on app usuage to help the CPU out...good luck

Evo battery life....

Ok, I have an evo, running fresh gingerbread rom, and.....the battery still blows, i have tried most if the popular roms and was not impressed, i have set cpu as well, i dont see any change, im not really that good at this stuff so can somebody PLEASE hook me up with a method to make my phone last a day, roms, kernals, set cpu profiles, anything.....thank you all greatly
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
If you are on 4g, wireless tether, playing roms, texting, and making calls, then don't expect the phone to last more than 5 hours.
First thing you need to do is start off with a fresh rom... pick your favorite so far.
Reboot
Install kernal (I like tiamat for AOSP or Netarchy for Sense but I suggest you try your own)
Reboot
Install undervolting script
Reboot
Open Google Talk>Settings>uncheck automatically log on then log off google talk
Install SetCpu
If you don't really game or anything then lower your voltages to 125 min 700ish max (you can be more aggressive if you want, but I wouldn't)
Charge phone to a 100%
reboot into recovery
wipe battery stats
Use your phone till it dies
Recharge
I think you will now have a strong phone that can last a good day depending on how you use it
If you still want to increase your battery life after all that
Lower brightness
lower the updating frequency of stocks, accounts, etc
make it a habit of turning off radios when not in use or install Juice defender
Create profile in SetCPU to lower CPU when screen off
All really good suggestions above...
but sometimes it could be just the battery it self... if all else doesn't work try another battery. The previous stock battery was horrible for me even after trying all the settings and etc. Once I got a new battery and did all the setting changes this thing is ready for anything.
What rom are you using? For the best battery life with a rom like cm7 I recommend using an SBC kernel from tiamat 4.0.2 SBC+ and give it a few days to settle in...then when your battery is low around 20% or less charge it for at least 4-6 hours while phone is sleeping..then turn off your phone while plugged in and charge for another hour..then unplug til green light goes off then plug in again til light goes green REPEAT 10 TIMES! then turn on phone while plugged in wait 2 minutes then unplug and battery is improved...do it every time you charge it from low %... this is for SBC kernels...also follow what the others said above me... I use an extended battery on conservative running it at 245 and 768 its been 12 hrs and I'm at 71% with moderate to heavy use...hope this helped
midget tossing is habit...2010 midwest regional champion... hw 001

wow, seems pretty involved, ill give this a shot, im running Fresh 4.0.0.4 rom now, is there another rom i should be using otherwise? i dont use the tether, i just do the youtube thing, facebook, email text and call, nothin to extensive
Try Evodecks 1.0 or 1.2c... Very nice and everything works on it... I'm using Tiamat 4.0.2 w/ sbc, its been 23 hrs and still at 59% thats moderate use though! But just search around and eventually you'll find something that suites your taste... MIUI is also a good rom! Just my 2 cents...

Wow!! That's impressive, I haven't gotten there yet but I def see I huge change, I just need to figure out this kernal thing, I'm using a savage zen kernal now and it seems pretty fast and the battery is alot better

[Q] How fast is your Epic?

Ok, I have search, but didn't find anything like this. I am wondering for those that can overclock, what speed do you use for your daily driver? I don't mean what speed you use just to play with benchmarks.
I know the faster you overclock you have more battery drain, so answer honestly!
I'll be first, I normally run at 1.3ghz, but am now trying 1.4ghz to see how much more battery drain I will have. I love my epic, it has always been fast and stable. What I run is in my signature.
If you feel like it, list your rom, kernel, and what you use to set it. It will be cool to see how fast you guys like to run on a daily diet!
I run at 1ghz... But when aosp roms come out probly 800mhz... My phone doesnt lag at all i see no need for overclocking other than banchmarks.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I run at 1.2 whenever I can, it shouldn't drain your battery unless yur playing games and shhtuff.

Same as deano, 100-800mhz conservative, 90% of the time, 100-1200 ondemand rare. I UV also so the 100-800mhz really gets great life.
I run at 1400/100 "on demand" all of the time when on Froyo. No undervolting. I have 2 stock batteries so battery life isn't my #1 priority...everything working and stability is and fortunately 1400 is totally stable for me. I saw a greater performance increase from 1300 to 1400 than I did from 1200 to 1300

I can almost echo your findings, except I have been running 1300. Out of curiosity how much more battery did you use when you jumped from 1300 to 1400 if you remember?.
I also undervolt a little more from 600 on down than 800 and up, but I rather have more stable than more undervolt. I can't believe how nice hte eipic is even against the current crop of phones. I love it!
Running "on demand" I have noticed very little difference going up to 1400 because its only there maybe 30 minutes per battery charge. It only uses that top setting when its needed. Keeping the undervolt away from those high states will ensure more stability since most of our phones require the voltage on those overclocked states like 1300 and 1400. If you get -25 or -50 stable on those high states, you are pretty lucky
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I use CFQ and run -50 on 100 - 200 - 300 - 400 - 600 and -25 on 800 - 1000 - 1200 - 1400 and is rock solid thru all of those frequencies.
Do you know if it is better to run less steps, something like 100 - 300 - 600 - 1000 - 1400 rather than how I have it set as above?
Don't forget to vote!
My phone doesn't like 1.4 jiggawatts. I stay at 1.2GHz. I'm running stock ec05 rfs with genocide. 4 hours and 10 minutes in I'm at 68%. With moderate to heavy use. I've been in bed for 2 days with a corneal abrasion. My phones the only thing I can play with lol

Darkside kernel questions.

So I'm currently running Juggs 5.0 and using the Darkside kernel. First day was rocky but relished it and love how smooth it is. Now am just testing the battery life. Here are much questions... 1) I was using cpu tune for my Faux kernel and used different profiles for it. Since I have Gideons script can I still do that? 2) Do you recommend it since I have this script? 3) I want my phone to not use hardly any battery when at rest or sleep, what's the best way to do this with the info I have given? Also I am using juice defender. Thanks in advance fellas !!

1) Yes but I wouldn't recommend it, its equivalent to having two CPU apps, they'll conflict, so pick one
2) See point one
3) Make sure your phone is deep sleeping, by using CPU spy and betterbatterystats to avoid app wake locks, which keep your phone from entering deep sleep and draining more battery.
For better performance all around (including deep sleep) i recommend undervolting with either faux clock or system tuner. Gideon script can also be modified to undervolt more if you read up on it a little.
As a side note, the general consensus among power users is that juice defender sucks. It drains more than it saves

No, a kernel won't kill the radio. Jd sucks, and it eats up more battery than it saves. Having your radios shut off makes a smartphone dumb. Run gideons script and call it a day.

Yeah I know that but I still don't know a lot about it still. I have to read here and there and processing time for me may not be as quick as some of y'all But what I thought underclocking was is it is going below the standard speed that my phone typically does like 1242. Hot phone

Hello all. I have recently flashed AOKP and I am loving it. My only problem is that the phone gets really hot. And not just on this ROM but on anything other than full stock. Why is this? Is there a fix? My friend told me that installing a custom kernel can help. Is there any truth to that? Thank you.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
It depends on what you're doing. Of course using alot of apps or playing games will cause the cpu to run at full speed. Its going to get warm.
No just from texting or using the web simple things
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Its a known issue on the GS3.
Don't worry about it too much.
The processor is made to handle heat, and it doesn't come close to failing from heat.
If it really bugs you, you can always try a custom kernel and undervolt and under clock to see how it runs.
My GS3 runs extremely hot playing games, (Real Racing 3 to be exact, and it ran so hot I honestly thought the motherboard would start melting lol) I flashed a custom kernel, undervolted and it runs much much cooler now.
But yeah don't worry about it too much
It was made for that

I would try flashing the KT kernel or any other custom kernel u may prefer and see how it runs with that kernel stock settings and then tweak yo or like from there. Keep in mind all phones are different so some ones else's set up or settings may not work the same for u

Title says it all. If I root my S3, it heats up to uncomfortable temperatures. If it's on stock, it runs nice and cool. Battery doesn't seem to be affected by this new heat. My friends S3 used to get really hot and he wasn't rooted. I turned off his location service and no more heat. I presume the heat is coming from something that's running in the background. What rooting method are you using? Also you said you've tried ROMs and kernels. Is the heat coming from rooted stock or only when you switch to another ROM and/or kernel?

If it's during use then CPU states. It might be running at higher mhz during use causing the heat problem.

Alright will share CPU stats by end of the day. I'm pretty sure that's the problem.

Ya I think my phone always runs at high frequencies. I used performance control to get this. Whenever I touch the screen or do anything, the clock speed jumps up to 1.5Ghz. My governer is interactive.

that's what it's supposed to do. part of the "project butter" tweaks for jelly bean included this type of CPU jump when performing a task. that instant jolt to the maximum device GHz helps make doing everything on the phone more fluid/fast.
to get better battery on your device and troubleshoot whether this feature is hurting you specifically more than helping, feel free to adjust your max speed. start low, at say 1GHz, then bump it up a hundred at a time to find out where your phone is the most comfortable.

Can we maybe explain it as having a device that just run's hot ? It was my first inclination.
OP, maybe I glanced over it at first but you stated you have used many rom's and kernels and got the exact same response on all the ones you used ?
Did you you try going back to stock rooted and seeing how it was from there ? A completely clean slate might be your best idea. The only way a device will get hot is is more power is being used to keep the processor at higher temperatures. There really isn't any other way or than faulty hardware issue.

Guess project butter has a high pricetag. Are there any governers that don't do this? Or is this unpreventable?

its not a price tag. its a script set to take advantage and make the most of the hardware on your phone. as soon as the task has begun, the CPU speed drops immediately.
see above post by hednik. i lean towards his thinking on this

I almost always use ondemand governor. In my humble opinion nearly all the other ones are inefficient or just placebo's. My phone runs streaming radio 4-5 hours a days on LTE and it never gets hot. Stays at around 918mhz at the highest. There a few bugs in 4.1.1 like the media server scanning where it will constantly scan your media because of a bad file.
Odin stock rooted 4.1.1 and then see how it goes. Factory reset it and erase /data or move to to pc or ex sd card. Won't take long and if it still does it I can't see what it would be.
