[Q] Did you upgrade your phone @ Walmart? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Ok, so this question is for people that used an upgrade and bought the SGS2 @ Walmart. Or any other phone at that.
Story -
I upgraded one of my lines(my sisters') and got the SGS2. The line I upgraded didn't have a data plan on it.
I knew that once upgrading I was gonna at least have to pay a minimum of $10 for the 4G plan even though I was gonna use the phone on a different line(my own).
I told that to the Walmart girl, she activated the phone, she said I was gonna get billed for the activation fee, did all the paperwork and went about my business. However she never did link the new sim card to the upgraded line.
So once I got home I activated the new sim card on (my line) and started using the SGS2. Not once did I put in the sim card of the actual line (my sisters') on the phone.
So now two months later, I still have an upgrade on the same line, I haven't had an upgrade fee or been charged for the data (which I don't even know if it got activated because the phone on that line is just a basic Samsung Gravity) and haven't tried to use the internet.
Question?
So how long did it take you to finally see it (fees)on your phone bill?
Do I not have any fees because the phone got linked to a different line than the one purchased on?
At this point it seems I bought the phone at Walmart at the full upgrade price without actually upgrading the line and no added fees (data fee, upgrade fee)
I'm curious because I thought by now I would of had those fees on my bill and that line would no longer be eligible for an upgrade.
Has anyone else had this experience at Walmart buying a phone?

Actually sounds like a Tmobile mistake. My little sister and her husband got an upgrade on both of their lines a few months ago. The upgrades never showed on their account and they still both have an upgrade. And, they got an upgrade mid last year, which also never showed on their account. So they've had 2 upgrades in a year and still have a full upgrade on each line. I wish they would eff my account up like that lol. But yea, it doesn't surprise me a bit.

Lucky them, lol. Well sounds good to me, this way I'll actually use the upgrade for my sister and give her a new phone for Christmas.
Looks like I'm gonna do all my upgrades at Walmart, lol.

The funny thing is they've told Tmobile about the mistakes and they don't seem to care. So I doubt its something that would come back on you.

Transferring numbers, and getting charged full price

So... my wife has been hating her Samsung Moment.
I have an EVO that I got on day one, but for some reason my account was tagged as eligible for an upgrade. This weekend, after chatting with sprint online who said I could get a new phone for my line, activate it, then switch it to her and switch back to my EVO.
So I bought her an Epic through Radioshack who was selling them cheap. It came in today, and says that they MAY charge me $300 if I switch the phone to another line after activating it, due to sprint reporting it as being deactivated.
Has anyone had any experience with this and Sprint before? I'd really rather not pay another $300, when I thought this wasn't going to be an issue.

Does that mean you have done what im trying to do and not had an issue?
Ie, buy a phone using one lines upgrade, activate, then transfer numbers back around?
To get the upgrade price, and/or the rebates, you need to keep it on the line for 30 days I believe. It may be 60 days, I'm not positive. But they do this for exactly this situation, so people cant use their update and immediately give it to another line.
Return the phone to RS so they can reverse your upgrade if you're worried about the fee. Call Sprint and see if they can give you a good price on the phone. You always have to read the fine print on those 3rd party vendors.
Never had issues like that. I have used my girls upgrade and activated the phone directly on to whatever line I wanted without ever having it on the eligable upgrade line. Done this several times, never a problem. Also, sometimes Sprint will do your mail in rebate for you instantly if you call in, as long as ur a premier member. Its nice not waiting for that check.
Hey... I think this thing makes phone calls too!

The first time, I ordered the phone from Sprint online with an upgrade from my fathers line, which I provide to him, and activated it on my line. That's the only way I was able to afford getting the Evo on launch.
Second time, I ordered an Evo from Wirefly using my upgrade and activated it on my girls line.
Third time, I ordered from Sprint online again for my friend who's on my family plan, and activated on his girls line. I have a maxed out family plan to save cash, communism rocks and so does unlimited mobile to mobile!
On all three of these, Sprint gave me zero trouble. On the two ordered directly from Sprint, they did my rebate instantly and applied the credit to my account. Also, on all three occasions I called Sprint directly to activate. I know you can do it online, but I find that you can get more out of it if you call in or go to the store. Case in point, instant rebate goodness.
Well, I did this same thing when I got the evo on launch day......used my wifes upgrade, from radioshack and within ten minutes of that purchase I switched the phone to my line and put wife blackberry back on her line, all while inside radioshack.....
hope this help.

I just did this, back when the evo came out, I used my wife's upgrade and transferred it to my line (done at the sprint store). In December, my line was eligible for an upgrade, so I used that upgrade to get my wife an evo (done at radio shack). They did all the switching right at the store. No problems and no extra charges.

I did the exact same thing as above but did it all at Wal-Mart as it was the only place around that had the phone in stock. I used my wifes upgrade to get the evo, and they switched the numbers around within 5 minutes.
Thanks for all the responses. I ended up getting scared of Radioshack online (Wirefly) and did it in store at a best buy, who did it all no problem.

Evo 3d upgrade question

Hey guys. Basically my stepdad has an unused phone upgrade, but does not want to use it.
I would like to own the new HTC EVO 3D.
Can we extend his lines contract, get the phone and then put it on my line?
Also, I understand now that an additional $10 fee is on each smartphone for "data" now. When we signed up only my phone had this fee due to being a 4g phone, the other smartphone including his did not get charged because they signed up and got their phones the month before the change (my stepdad bought his phone online which is why he has an upgrade). Would my plan add a $10 fee to his line?
Any input appreciated. Thanks.
Nope, only the person using the phone has the $10 fee. But make sure sprint knows that you're switching phones and he will not have the Evo3d
Depending on what contract/plan he is on and if your also on that plan. If you are already on that plan and do not have a 'smart' phone, then it will only be the extra $10. However, with it being 'his' upgrade, you will have to have him upgrade 'his' phone and then activate his 'old' phone under you. If you are not on 'his' plan and you are going to add the line, then it will be $20 plus the $10 ($30) additional per month. But I'm pretty sure you can't use his upgrade for a different account. Great, now I'm confused....I think this is right, but a good rep in the store or him calling may be a better option. There are also some sprint guys on here that could answer it better.

I'm not going to lie. This has me confused as well.
We are all on a family plan.
He has a smartphone, I have a smartphone and we both have our own lines. I pay $10 because I had the htc evo, he does not pay the additional $10 currently.
I want to lengthen his contract, get the phone and NOT activate it on his line, instead, take it home and call and have it activated on mine.
If you are doing this anywhere that offers "Instant Rebates" you can get away with this. Just don't activate the phone on his line at all, otherwise he will be stuck with the $10 fee when he re-activates his "smart phone". Either order it online or at a store, just be sure they do not activate it at the store. Once you are home go online and activate it on your line, or via Sprint chat.
Yeah I did it the last year with the evo4g, you will be fine as long as he activates it with his and makes like two calls and then you call sprint to change ESNs, when you change them tell him to make sure they're taking off that $10/month charge. I'm pretty sure he'll never have to pay it but I guess they might have him pay it for one month. I guess you could look at it as a tax for getting a Evo3d
With the instant rebate he shouldnt have to activate it on his line. If he does he is boned. Assuming he had any smartphone that is on the systematically enforced list. There is no override, the system will from then, on force the $10 fee on any applicable smart phone, blackberry, android, wm etc etc. doesn't matter that its not 4g.
Trust me plenty of people have got jacked on this. The only exception is if its a TEP/ warranty replacement. It sucks, but it is what it is now. Co-worker activated her old Sanyo flip for a 3 day camping trip, came home and activated her BB curve again...boned with the $10 fees now. Only way it will go away is if she uses a non smartphone from now on. Soon as she activates any smartphone, the fee is back.

What kind of phone does your dad have? Is it a smartphone. I wonder if they begin implementing the $10 fee if you upgrade your line but keep the same smartphone.
once he upgrade to a new phone he will
Follow up:
You cannot upgrade a line and not activate the phone. I tried at multiple stores and if you purchase it online it activates when you first turn it on upon receiving it.
Anyhow, there is the basic answer if anyone knows a way around let me know
Ok heres what you do upgrade your dads phone to whatever phone you want then activate it like you would regularly do on his line then make like 2 calls then call sprint and ask them to switch each phone to the account you want it on.

Thanks for your input but I think you are missing a critical detail regarding this thread.
My dads phone is grandfathered into no $10 fee for his current smartphone, swapping to any other phone even for an instant will result in the $10 fee on his account for having a smartphone.
Your suggestion includes the idea of activating the upgrade phone on my dads account. I wanted to know if it was possible to upgrade and NOT activate so that he would not be charged $10 on his line AND I would get an upgrade phone. The end of this story is
TO MY KNOWLEDGE IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO UPGRADE A LINE AND NOT ACTIVATE THE PHONE AT ALL ON THAT PARTICULAR LINE.
AND
THIS ONLY REALLY MATTERS IF THE LINE BEING UPGRADED IS GRANDFATHERED IN TO NOT PAYING $10 FOR A SMARTPHONE AND THAT PERSON CURRENTLY HAS A SMARTPHONE.
He will only get charged once unless the phone that gets swapped with his upgrade is a smartphone that gets charges the 10$ then he will get charged every month

That's what he's trying to do. Dad has a smartphone and this guy is trying to get the 3d for himself. Activating the 3d on dads line, even for a minute, will trigger the $10 smart phone fee for for dad. Since he said dad already has a smartphone currently.
Some brick and mortar stores will do this, like best buy or radio shack. I bought a phone as a gift using an upgrade and held it for over 2 weeks before activating. Just call in and have them activate it on your line. Should be fine. Even from sprint.com should be ok. Just call in and have them release the phone from that line first, account owner may need to make the call. Then have it activated on your line.
Key is to not power it up until they are activating it to your line. Since if it's tied to his line, it will try to auto activate. When it connects to the network the first time, it will try to activate on whatever line sprint originally programmed it to. That line is changed when you call them in to activate it, after having it released from his line first.

First, I would like to thank you for understanding my thread and posts and posting something that makes sense.
I'd like to mention that I have a 3d now and I just bought it on craigslist. This thread is really just informative at this point as I do not have a problem to solve any longer.
When I went to radio shack I tried to tell them it was "a gift for my dad". They told me that basically they could not give me the phone without activating. The guy there is older and not really very savvy so it could just be that or the policy has changed. How long ago did you do the gift thing?
FYI asurion is out of evo4g now replacing claims with the evo3d so basically $100 to upgrade to evo3d

The last time I did this was last Christmas. But I just spoke to a Sprint rep least week about this. I activated an old flip phone for my son, as he trashed his phone (which is why he won't get a nice phone). The rep was telling me he had an upgrade (which I knew) and I could get myself the iPhone using his upgrade. Plus on Sprint users forum, lots of people bought iPhones and sold them with no issues. Just had to call in and release the phone from their account if anything.

Sprint launches early upgrade promo

In an industry where customer churn can be likened to the fearsome troll under the bridge, Sprint has launched a program designed to keep its favored subscribers around for another two years. While not everyone is eligible -- those who've upgraded less than eight months ago, corporate outfits and those in collections need not inquire -- the program lets customers buy their way out of their current commitment and become eligible for a new, subsidized handset. The promotion begins February 12th and is set to run through the 14th of April, where the amount you pay correlates to the time since your last upgrade. So if you're currently pining for the Epic 4G Touch or the iPhone 4S, just give your local Sprint store a call this Sunday. They just may be able to hook you up.

IMO opinion this is more of a contract buyout to get new user pricing than it is an early upgrade promo like the Sprint Premier Gold program was.
It makes 0 sense to pay $55 to buy out for early upgrade if you're like 1-4 months out.

Keep in mind though, that we live in a world where people will happily spend well in excess of $55 to "upgrade" from something like a IPhone 4 to a 4s. Sometimes, "sense" takes a back seat to a desire to be instantaneously satisfied... lol

I have to agree, people at my store will pay a lot to get their upgrade now to get the phone they want now. I think a lot of it comes from people who buy cheap phones and just can't take having them anymore and will do anything to get out of that phone.

This actually isn't a promotion. It's just a last resort offering by Retention as of right now. You pay on average $10/month remaining on your contract with an average maximum of 6 months to move your upgrade up. We've been doing it for months for customers in my stores, but it's never really been publicly advertised.

My wife is only 2 months away from an upgrade; if she waits, she still pays 36 dollars "activation fee", or, if she does it tomorrow, its the same 36 dollars, so, if you are a month or 2 away, it doesn't cost you a dime more to do it now..
yes, i am sure its to clean out the existing inventory before the "new" network is in full swing..

I work at a preferred dealer as well, just tell your customers to call customer care and see if they can do an early upgrade. If that doesn't work have them be transferred to retentions and say someone they know was able to buy out their remaining contract and get an early upgrade. That easy. I have my upgrade still, saving it for the GSIII because I'm not stupid like some people.

i have an airave for that
Ok I called Sprint customer care today inquiring about the upgrade. My girl's line is due for upgrade in October and I am tired of her complaining about her Evo3d restarting all the time. So I called to see if I can get that upgrade for an Iphone for her. I was told that the new promo is only for people who's upgrade is in April or earlier and are also having phone issues. I think I'm going to call a corporate store tomorrow. Any advice or am I wasting my time? The Engadget article said if you upgraded within the last 8 months your or not eligible. I didn't upgrade this line within the last 8 months.
To upgrade or not to upgrade....
I saw this on Friday and wandered into a Sprint store on Sunday. The fella at the desk told me this was all legit and that I would need to call customer service because he could not do anything from the store (he said to ask for the "retentions" department).
I've been suffering with a Hero for the last 18 months. Loved the phone when I first got it, but it didn't take long to realize that it was not powerful enough to keep me happy. My wife is on her third Moment because everything about that phone just doesn't seem to work. I was hoping to hold out for an LTE phone but it appears those won't be dropping until late summer, and I'm not sure if we can hold out that long.
On the Sprint website, I get a message that I am eligible for $150 off a new phone on April 1 (remnants of the Premiere Program). From what I read, I'll have to pay $36 to upgrade in April or I can pay $55 now.
So my question(s) to all you Sprint people out there, am I reading all this correctly? Will I still qualify for the $150 off the new phone? Am I absolutely crazy for not waiting for LTE? Should I take the SGS2E4GT (Galaxy S 2) or hold out for the Nexus?
Thanks for the input.

I would buy a used phone off Craig's list or something now and hold onto you upgrade for an LTE device. You can get an E4GT for around $300 and EVO 3D for much less or an Nexus 4G for even less then that.
That is what I would do because once the GN drops you know you will want it or whatever cool LTE phone comes out soon after that...
The way I read this is that they are just pro-rating your ETF (the way they all should do anyway).
In theory, it works like this:
A high end handset costs ~$600 but in exchange for signing a 2-year contract, the cell phone carrier will subsidize $400 of the cost and roll the cost of that "loan" into the cost of your monthly service. You get a new phone without as large an initial outlay of cash and they gain a steady source of income for at least the next 2 years.
In theory you should be able to bring your own phone and get service at a lower cost off-contract because you aren't paying off a subsidy but since the top 3 providers don't offer this, there is not really any benefit to not taking the subsidy. You are already paying the same monthly rate so other than not being locked into a service contract, you gain nothing financially from not taking the $400 subsidy.
Along with this, in theory, your ETF should drop by 1/24th every month as you are basically paying off the subsidy one month at a time over two years. Once again, it doesn't quite work that way. At least this is an attempt to let people pay off the remaining subsidy before signing a new contract and taking a new one.
I would prefer to just pay $600 for my phone and then pay $17 less per month (approx 1/24 of $400) with no contract but since the US market seems accustomed to cheaper subsidized handsets on contract I don't know it would ever take off much. The contracts, handset exclusives, and lack of porting options have made it so the carriers have little incentive to compete on price or plan options..but that's another topic for another day.
Well I got mine it was 40 bucks but.my Gf needs a new phone had so, iPhone 4s and she can have my day 2week old epic touch 4g
Update: I got my upgrade and the fee was added to my bill and my upgrade is now waiting. Pretty cool. I have another upgrade in August so I will se what they have then.

Upgrade still available... slipped through the cracks? (Sprint)

Post if this has happened to you, please.
I was available for upgrade and had gotten an EVO LTE through Wirefly. Ended up returning it, and got my refund about a week later. A few days after getting my refund, I got my upgrade eligibility back. About 3 weeks after that I ordered my S3 using my upgrade from Amazon, and the day after I placed my order I got an e-mail from Amazon saying they weren't able to activate my new device, but it wouldn't be a problem because I can simply call Sprint when I get it and have them activate it for me. So that's what I did. Now, about a month later, I check on the Sprint website and it says I'm still eligible for upgrade on this line. So I went to Amazon's site and used their checker, and it also says I'm available for upgrade.
Checked my statements and my balances and I was only ever billed the $149.99 for the device and I haven't gotten any e-mails about this issue or that I owe more money.
Did I slip through the cracks here? Anyone else have this happen before? Would be cool if I did xD
This happened to me when I was n ATT. They gave me two upgrades within one month on one line. Lol
It's happened to a lot of people before. Usually it goes away after a few days to a month. If amazon.com lets you buy one with a new contract, you can buy it for $150 and sell it on ebay for $500.
Good to know this sort of thing happens. I guess I got lucky then. Amazon says I'm eligible and so does Sprint, I think I might be good. Had to be related to that weird e-mail I got from Amazon saying they were unable to ACTIVATE my device. I'm not sure if I want to buy another phone and sell it. Don't really need the money. I'd prefer being able to upgrade to a quad-core S4 this coming Christmas LOL

Chances are that it'll be fixed within the next month like it was for other people, so I'd highly recommend seizing the opportunity ASAP.
this happened at T-Mobile with me and i almost told on myself but i caught on. They didn't notice i just got a new phone weeks ago. So i kept my phone and waited til gs2 came out and sold my old /new phone for 500 dollars easiest money i ever made. Thanks T-Mobile you guys rock lol.

sounds like ur eligibility status got lost in the shuffle of upgrading thru amazon to the LTE then returning it then ordering an S3. Im assuming Sprint restored ur eligibility after returning the LTE but never removed ur eligibility after u ordered the S3 and data got crossed between companies... if u wanna buy me an Gnex with ur "spare" upgrade i'll paypal u the money... LOL
Happened to us awhile back when I got a Hero for the wife. Got it at BestBuy and as a course of normal routine, I checked her upgrade status a few months later and it still showed she could upgrade. Went back and got her an OG EVO, then sold the Hero for same price as the upgrading to the EVO.

[POLL] Upgrade to S3 now or wait for S4?

I am due for an upgrade with Sprint. I am currently on the Evo 4g. There seems to be some good holiday deals on the S3 right now. I was thinking about jumping on one of these. However, after doing some reading it looks like the S4 may not be too far around the corner. Any thoughts on waiting it out or even waiting for the first of the year for some of the new HTC line? I know waiting with a subsidized carrier like Sprint means you're basically losing money, so I'm trying to decide the best course of action.
I would say just get the s3 its an amazing phone I'm running cm10 on it right now and its super fast stable and the battery life is amazing! The s4 most likely won't be out until next summer if you want a major upgrade I would say wait for the galaxy note3 or the nexus5!

I got mine on black friday so it was impossible to turn down. I had the evo, but it just wasn't cutting it. Rooted and everything stripped out of it, I still couldn't have facebook, google music, google maps, and skype installed at the same time because of storage issues. I really like the s3, and if you can get a good deal on it, you might as well. My gf still has the evo, and she's now eyeing my s3. If you want to wait for the s4, you might as well wait for the s5 or s6, or whatever... My philosophy with tech has always been, what will benefit me the most now, because if you always have in the back of your head that you plan to upgrade, you never will. Do it now, or do it never lol
I'm currently leaning toward the upgrade, but I may have just been dealt a blow. I checked with Amazon and they said I'm not eligible for the $50 price because I'm a current customer (despite that I'm up for a two year contract extension). Does anyone else have any experience with this? Is this true?

That doesn't make sense. Could you print out price from Amazon and go to best buy for price match?
I could see if they still had premier upgrades after first year but you have fulfilled your 2 year obligation to sprint. You're a free agent now.

That's what I figured as well. I haven't really found any information on the internet about people upgrading after a 2-year contract either. Has anyone successfully done so through Amazon or any other retailer? Perhaps I was mistaken when I thought the discounted price applied to me?
Also, will it matter that I am on a SERO plan? Don't want to lose that guy!

Best buy is supposed to be having a sale on the Galaxy S3 this Sunday....it'll be $50 in store.
Got mine for $30 through Amazon about 3 weeks ago. But I was a new sprint customer.

Easy call, if you see an outstanding deal on the S3 ($50 or under) then snag one. If a deal doesn't come your way then hold off. I'm on the SGS3 right now and it is a pretty amazing device. I was able to get it for $50 through Sprint on the Black Friday stuff, my wife's SGS3 on the other hand we shelled out $250 for, and we just wish we had waited the extra couple of months *Grin*.. Of course if you are like some and Money isn't an issue Get Both !
Just got mines Today at Best Buy for $49.99. One day sale!!!
Got mine black friday, price matched from sams at walmart. Got a $100 gifrcard too. Freakin sweet! Id say get this phone, its gonna be one people still want a year from now. Promise.

I also had the original Evo 4G for two years wating on the SIII to come out.
At this point, you might as well wait for the SIV to use your upgrade option. Shop around for deals on SIII online and you might just be able to snag both phones.
It is an amazing phone though. I can say with confidence that i'll keep it until I get a good deal on a SIV, after the first few months after the launch date.
Well after talking with Sprint Employee Account (I'm on a SERO-P plan), they offered me $75 off my bill for the next two months to effectively make the S3 $50. I went ahead and took the plunge! I should have the phone tomorrow.

I think you made the right choice! You will be really happy with this phone. I rooted mine the first day I had it

Just get the s3. Still a strong selling phone. Stay away from HTC. They tend to stop updates to there phones after they have been out for a short time. I don't think the note3 will be out anytime soon since the note2 just came out. S4 won't be out until sometime next year probably.

I decided to go ahead and take the plunge for the S3. I was eligible for the early upgrade and I had the Buy Back program from Best Buy. If I waited for the "next" phone I would have lost the Buy Back. Turned out the S3 was $99 and the Buy Back gave me $130 on my old Epic 4G, so I made out pretty well. Got the phone and had some left over cash to use on a case.
