READ THE OP [ODIN][STOCK][TAR] SPH-D710.EG30 ROM/EG31 Modem - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

UPDATE 2: Just wanted to let everyone know I've posted the question in Sprint's internal forum regarding whether or not the OTA form of EK02 will work properly if the phone has been flashed with the tar in this thread.
I expect it to, since this is the software Sprint techs use in store, but ill keep everyone informed regardless.
UPDATE: THIS WILL CHANGE YOUR MODEM TO EG31 AND YOUR KERNEL BUILD TIME.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU? IT MEANS YOU CAN'T FLASH EK02 OR OTHER LEAKED UPDATE.ZIPs THAT ARE DEPENDANT ON BUILD DATES TO WORK.
EXPECT OFFICIAL RELEASES TO WORK UNLESS TOLD OTHERWISE.
With that being said, the modem and kernel are still exactly the same as before, and this can still be considered STOCK. Use this as a life preserver. Or a fresh start.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not responsible for you being irresponsible with ODIN!
This is a FULL, STOCK, factory re-flash for your phone. This re-writes ALL writable partitions; system, data, modem, kernel, etc. Does NOT touch internal SD.
For those who are unfamiliar, this is used mainly as life-preserver to recover from some of the nastiest of soft bricks, and also as "fresh start", to get your phone back to stock before going on a flashing spree.
How-to video, big thanks to qbking77 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3Ft0iDayh4
You'll need to search around here for the program ODIN and all applicable drivers
Open ODIN
place this in the PDA slot:
STOCK EG30 TAR: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6CIQINYU
place this in the PIT slot
PIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265023
Mirror for both files: http://chris41g.devphone.org/index.php?dir=EpicTouch/Stock+Roms/
uncheck the "re-partition" and "f. reset time" boxes
(though if your phone is REALLY messed up, i recommend using re-partition)
put your phone in download mode
use a NICE usb cable (stock with this phone isn't too bad)
hit start
ENJOY what I've given you

sorry bout that, thanks for pointing it out. fixed

I thought the .pit file wasn't needed unless you were partitioning your phone? Thanks for this though.

Now that we have this, anyone know how to extract the modem.bin?

So in the concensus we do not need to use the pit file?

Big thanks to OP
I missed a call for a phone interview due to eg12. I took it to sprint to have it fixed and they said they did but I still had eg12 (and the problem).

Good question usually it means it is an update. But I could be wrong. I with knowledge am thinking it is, or this is stock and the current "stock" was not "stock" and pre release firmware?

Can someone post a screenshot of menu->settings->about phone?

ROM issue with my Epic 4G Touch, need help!

I just did a trade with someone and got his Epic 4G Touch. He mentioned the phone was rooted but I didn't catch what rom he had on there. The phone was working fine but had all of his information on it, so I did a factory reset so I can get all of my stuff on it. Once the phone rebooted, it shows the Samsung loadup screen with a yellow exclamation point at the bottom of the screen, then goes to a screen that says "Android" on it, then it seemingly turns off. I can't get the phone to load up at all, it just goes to that Android screen and goes black. Any ideas on how I can get this back up and running? Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.
Hold power and vol down, then hit vol up and you should be in odin mode. Just flash a new kernel and rom with that using odin. There are plenty of en in the development section. I like stock rooted deodexed rom with LoSt kernel
Sent from my Galaxy S2
Thanks for the response. I did that and it shows a screen that says "Downloading...Do not turn off target!!". I presume I have to flash the ROM from my home computer since I'm at work right now. Is that normal that you would have to reflash a rom after doing a factory reset? I did that on my Evo that was rooted and the ROM that was on the phone originally still loaded up like normal.
FYI: it has Zedomax v3 for the kernel. I think I will try out the stock setup you suggested once I get home.
in most cases u dont realy need to do wipe date( factory reset) but i dont think is the wipe data messed up ur phone. i could wrong tho when did a factor reset did u wiped the internal storage too? that might cause the problem

When you have a custom rom you never want to do a factory restore as it is not a factory rom ..... Use odin to flash a stock rom or download one and put it on micro sd and use cwm to install ... Vol up and power

I didn't realize it would do that. Is it necessary to have a microSD card to install a new ROM? Also, I am looking to have the stock software on this phone, but still keep it rooted to be able to use the hotspot. Would this be the correct link to downloading that? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282415
Thanks for the help everyone. You guys are why XDA rules the roost!
Yes that is the rom for installing in cwm...., now about sd card go into cwm and mount internal and hook up to computer with usb .....the newer cwm versions can do this some of the first one could not .....if your computer then sees the phone put room on internal and flash if not then you will have to odin or use card

I'm not entirely sure. He doesn't remember what ROM he had, only the kernel (Zedomax v3) that he had installed. I tried doing the deodexed package first and nothing happened. When I went to the stock package it changed the boot screen to the Sprint version but just loops endlessly. Had I not done the factory reset I would've had more details but I haven't been able to load up anything since then.

Hmm ec05 sometimes things take a while are you sure your download is complete its like 290mbs and are you doing it properly only auto reboot checked. If you are then id say give it like 5-8 minutes if it hangs then try another usb port and keep on it hopefully it will kick it in there. Just to make sure your using the victory pit file and have the pda checked and the ec05.tar in the file right?

It still may be a bad download. Why not come up to EI22? Odin this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340385
Then Odin the EC05 modem tar seperately here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123103
And then flash the EC05toEI22 modem zip.
---------- Post added at 09:59 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:58 AM ----------
Also try it with the battery and sd card out. Odin works better that way. Use the computer as the power source. Connect it then put it into download mode.

This happens to me once in a while. Just switch usb ports. ALSO AVOID USING THE EXTENDED USB PORTS!. Those are the ones in the front off the PC case or on the side. Use the ones directly from the motherboards, meaning use the ones in the back off the pc case. Restart your PC also. If those 2 fail, buy a new usb cord. Also, ive had odin stay at modem forever but pulling the battery out and booting the phone and all is ok. Weird. But happens.

Use the one-click method to get you back to EL29, since you're coming from an ICS ROM back to GB you should use the full rather than the no-data. One you've done that, then download and extract the autoroot tool and follow the prompts to get you to the unrooting. Make sure you have USB debugging turned on before using autoroot.

When you plug the phone in while in Odin mode, are you getting the yellow highlighted box with COMxx in it to indicate the computer is recognizing your phone?
Another possible path is to pop out your sdcard, put it into the computer and load up some files that can be flashed via recovery (if you have recovery installed) then reinsert the card, hold power and volume up button to boot into recovery and flash a new build that way.
I've been trying to use the one click option, my phone is recognized but it won't proceed to completetion, i guess it's bricked. Is there anything i can do?
So let me get this straight. You put your phone into Odin/download mode, start the one click, and it fails? Does Odin notice your phone while in Odin/download mode?

Okay if it is recognizing your phone then try downloading another one-click and using it, or even re-downloading the same one you already have.
So even if my device is bricked it will load this, as long as odin recognizes it?

Thanks for the writeup though. :good:

Yes... It will work with Jellybean. This method does not install a prerooted image tar. So it will root whatever Is on your phone without any regard. It simply installs custom recovery and root.

Sorry, this is for the at&t galaxy s3. This guide was originally written for the Sprint but I replaced CWM 6.0.1.2 with 6.0.1.4 to make it compatible with the at&t. The rest is identical. I thought I had cleaned up the guide. I guess I missed a few references. I will clean it up after work tonight to get rid of any confusion. Thanks very much for the heads up...
Is this confirmed working? A buddy hat work upgraded his ATT S3 to JB and he wants root back.

Does this method trip the flash counter?

Yes it does. But it's not an issue. Just run triangle away just before going back to stock and it will reset you back to zero.
See the instructions to unroot and return to stock.

Thanks man! Followed the guide on GalaxyS3Root.com after updating Jelly bean and it failed. This one works perfectly on my AT&T GS3! Cheers!

No problem... the at&t guys on Android Central have been using my guide to root their phones for quite some time now. So I know it works. Glad you were successful.
Anyone try this on a rogers GS 3?

I haven't heard but it should work on the Rogers I747. Let us know...
Any chance you could make a guide for mac users? Much thanks!

Sorry I don't have a Mac. I only know that you need a program called hiemdall. Don't even know if you use the same files. I can't in good conscience, put out a guide completely blind.

Yes and no - you need to extract the individual files from the .tar image in order to use the image with Heimdall. Unfortunately, not having gone through the entire process myself in that fashion, I can't really comment on which files match up with which Heimdall options, though I may look more in detail into that at a later date.
No worries Skunk Ape1. I just haven't been able to find a guide for 4.1.1 on mac.
smelenchuk if you do please let me know your findings! Thanks man
RC great work here, worthy of a sticky, so Stuck and Thank you.
Okay, I've taken the time to tinker with Heimdall a bit to get the partition identifiers from my own phone (which matches up from the info from this old thread), and have put together the following, which seems to work for me. This was with Heimdall 1.4-rc1; I think earlier versions don't accept numeric identifiers.
You'd probably better have a plan on hand to get things back to normal if this doesn't work (I'm not responsible for your bricking your own device if this doesn't work).
You'll need to extract the .tar image before using this; if you're at a command line,
Code:
tar xf <image>.tar
should suffice to do that. You'll end up with the following files:
Code:
aboot.mbn
boot.img
cache.img.ext4
NON-HLOS.bin
recovery.img
rpm.mbn
sbl2.mbn
sbl3.mbn
system.img.ext4
tz.mbn
Afterwards, boot your phone into download mode (from a powered-down phone, Vol Down + Home + Power Button until you see the Samsung logo) and make sure you're completely ready and have backups and all before you run the following (I'm not going to be held responsible for you bricking your own phone and being unable to recover from it afterwards):
Code:
heimdall flash --1 NON-HLOS.bin --3 sbl2.mbn --4 sbl3.mbn --5 aboot.mbn --6 rpm.mbn --7 boot.img --8 tz.mbn --14 system.img.ext4 --17 cache.img.ext4 --18 recovery.img
You should be able to get away with flashing only some of those images instead of all of them (in particular, if you have a third party recovery from somewhere, you might want to omit the recovery image); that said, if you're only flashing some of the specified images as opposed to all of them, I'm almost certain it will trip the flash counter. (I don't know if flashing *everything* will trip the flash counter or not, though, seeing as I deliberately did not flash the recovery during my own test for ease of restoring my phone to its normal happy state.)
Already hit the thanks button once, but wanted to formally thank you for this super easy root/recovery guide! Less than 5 minutes and done! Thank you!

Partially Encrypted phone, no longer booting

Hello everyone,
I have an issue and I'm hoping that someone could maybe point me to the right direction: I was encrypting my S3 (i747M, running stock 4.4.2) with the options that are available through the Security menu in Touchwiz, and one of the requirements was that the phone be plugged through the encryption process as it needed a minimum of 80% battery. While I started the process, my phone was plugged and it was going on for about 2 minutes, when it fell from my table and got unplugged.. The back of the phone opened and when I restarted it, it never went past the part where before booting, it asks for a password before proceeding.
So, now the phone doesn't boot anymore.. I guess it's worth mentioning that I do have access to both download and recovery mode.
What I have tried to do so far has been:
Cleaning cache and dalvik and wiping the phone: nothing
Trying to flash the stock 4.4.2 ROM via Odin: nothing
Tried flashing another ROM via Philz, such as CM or Carbon: still nada..
If anyone could weight in and maybe provide any assitance or point me to the right direction, it would be tremendous help!
Thank you!
Did you format Dalvik, cache, data, and system before trying to flash a custom ROM?

Yup, I did. I did wipe system with the philz function to wipe before flashing a new ROM, but incidentally neither Carbon or CM have flashed properly.. I get a little android laying down with a red triangle.. I hadn't realize that before.

I don't use Philz as I prefer to do each step using Touch CWM. Not sure what to suggest. Hopefully, someone with encryption experience will respond to your post.
Did you try flashing in Odin with re-partition checked?

Nope, I hadn't try that but thank you, I definitely will give it a try and report back.
EDIT:
It didn't work.. I get this error message:
<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
<OSM> Leave CS..
<ID:0/010> Odin v.3 engine (ID:10)..
<ID:0/010> File analysis..
<ID:0/010> SetupConnection..

<ID:0/010> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/010> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
<ID:0/010> Can't open the specified file. (Line: 1876)
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
I flashed after the stock md5 through Odin without the re-partion thingy checked and it flashed, but I get back to the booting part where I'm asked for the password to decrypt the phone, and it just reboots after that..
Anything else I could possibly do?
Try flashing like before with re-partition checked, but this time also click the PIT button and use this file.

Might not work, but could be worth a shot if the encryption is interfering with the internal pit on your device. If so, perhaps using one like this will work....?
Beyond that I'm just not sure. But if I think of anything I'll let you know.

That you for the pit, and sorry I got back to report so late. I flashed the pit but I think since it wasn't an i747m pit it didn't work properly.. The phone no longer booted so I followed a "debricking" guideline I found on another post and now I can access download mode at least. Other than maybe trying with a, 747m pit what do u think my choices are? Just to JTAG it?
Thank you

I suggest getting into download mode and trying to flash a full i747m ROM again in Odin.

Oh man! I'm really sorry about that! I must have been thinking it was the I747....
Do as audit13 suggested though. Flash your stock 4.4.2 firmware via Odin and it should get it working again.

Thank you again. I'll try flashing the stock version again and I will report back. Should I try it without the PIT?
I would. I don't see it making anything worse to try it. If you can get a pit from another I747m, you could try it with that one. Obviously, don't use the one I gave you again!
If you know someone with the same model, I can help you get a pit from that device if you can't find one somewhere around here.

Sorry for the so late reply, but I had to travel for work and wasn't coming here. As a matter of fact I do have a second S3, and i747M also that I could retrieve the PIT from. Could you guide as to how I can do that please? Thank you!

Thank you for the suggestion. I was able to resolve it in the end I had done that before, but I was unable to get past the samsung logo, because I was missing the correct .PIT i believe. What I ended up doing was flashing stock firmware downloaded from sammobile via Odin and, using the stock recovery, I wiped data / factory reset and it worked! For some reason it didn't and hadn't work with a custom recovery, although I was doing the same process.
Thank you for everyone who helped with this!
