Hello everyone,
I have an issue and I'm hoping that someone could maybe point me to the right direction: I was encrypting my S3 (i747M, running stock 4.4.2) with the options that are available through the Security menu in Touchwiz, and one of the requirements was that the phone be plugged through the encryption process as it needed a minimum of 80% battery. While I started the process, my phone was plugged and it was going on for about 2 minutes, when it fell from my table and got unplugged.. The back of the phone opened and when I restarted it, it never went past the part where before booting, it asks for a password before proceeding.
So, now the phone doesn't boot anymore.. I guess it's worth mentioning that I do have access to both download and recovery mode.
What I have tried to do so far has been:
Cleaning cache and dalvik and wiping the phone: nothing
Trying to flash the stock 4.4.2 ROM via Odin: nothing
Tried flashing another ROM via Philz, such as CM or Carbon: still nada..
If anyone could weight in and maybe provide any assitance or point me to the right direction, it would be tremendous help!
Thank you!
Did you format Dalvik, cache, data, and system before trying to flash a custom ROM?

Yup, I did. I did wipe system with the philz function to wipe before flashing a new ROM, but incidentally neither Carbon or CM have flashed properly.. I get a little android laying down with a red triangle.. I hadn't realize that before.

I don't use Philz as I prefer to do each step using Touch CWM. Not sure what to suggest. Hopefully, someone with encryption experience will respond to your post.
Did you try flashing in Odin with re-partition checked?

Nope, I hadn't try that but thank you, I definitely will give it a try and report back.
EDIT:
It didn't work.. I get this error message:

I flashed after the stock md5 through Odin without the re-partion thingy checked and it flashed, but I get back to the booting part where I'm asked for the password to decrypt the phone, and it just reboots after that..
Anything else I could possibly do?
Try flashing like before with re-partition checked, but this time also click the PIT button and use this file.

Might not work, but could be worth a shot if the encryption is interfering with the internal pit on your device. If so, perhaps using one like this will work....?
Beyond that I'm just not sure. But if I think of anything I'll let you know.

That you for the pit, and sorry I got back to report so late. I flashed the pit but I think since it wasn't an i747m pit it didn't work properly.. The phone no longer booted so I followed a "debricking" guideline I found on another post and now I can access download mode at least. Other than maybe trying with a, 747m pit what do u think my choices are? Just to JTAG it?
Thank you

I suggest getting into download mode and trying to flash a full i747m ROM again in Odin.

Oh man! I'm really sorry about that! I must have been thinking it was the I747....
Do as audit13 suggested though. Flash your stock 4.4.2 firmware via Odin and it should get it working again.

Thank you again. I'll try flashing the stock version again and I will report back. Should I try it without the PIT?
I would. I don't see it making anything worse to try it. If you can get a pit from another I747m, you could try it with that one. Obviously, don't use the one I gave you again!
If you know someone with the same model, I can help you get a pit from that device if you can't find one somewhere around here.

Sorry for the so late reply, but I had to travel for work and wasn't coming here. As a matter of fact I do have a second S3, and i747M also that I could retrieve the PIT from. Could you guide as to how I can do that please? Thank you!

Thank you for the suggestion. I was able to resolve it in the end I had done that before, but I was unable to get past the samsung logo, because I was missing the correct .PIT i believe. What I ended up doing was flashing stock firmware downloaded from sammobile via Odin and, using the stock recovery, I wiped data / factory reset and it worked! For some reason it didn't and hadn't work with a custom recovery, although I was doing the same process.
Thank you for everyone who helped with this!

I just did a trade with someone and got his Epic 4G Touch. He mentioned the phone was rooted but I didn't catch what rom he had on there. The phone was working fine but had all of his information on it, so I did a factory reset so I can get all of my stuff on it. Once the phone rebooted, it shows the Samsung loadup screen with a yellow exclamation point at the bottom of the screen, then goes to a screen that says "Android" on it, then it seemingly turns off. I can't get the phone to load up at all, it just goes to that Android screen and goes black. Any ideas on how I can get this back up and running? Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.
Hold power and vol down, then hit vol up and you should be in odin mode. Just flash a new kernel and rom with that using odin. There are plenty of en in the development section. I like stock rooted deodexed rom with LoSt kernel

Thanks for the response. I did that and it shows a screen that says "Downloading...Do not turn off target!!". I presume I have to flash the ROM from my home computer since I'm at work right now. Is that normal that you would have to reflash a rom after doing a factory reset? I did that on my Evo that was rooted and the ROM that was on the phone originally still loaded up like normal.
FYI: it has Zedomax v3 for the kernel. I think I will try out the stock setup you suggested once I get home.
in most cases u dont realy need to do wipe date( factory reset) but i dont think is the wipe data messed up ur phone. i could wrong tho when did a factor reset did u wiped the internal storage too? that might cause the problem

When you have a custom rom you never want to do a factory restore as it is not a factory rom ..... Use odin to flash a stock rom or download one and put it on micro sd and use cwm to install ... Vol up and power

I didn't realize it would do that. Is it necessary to have a microSD card to install a new ROM? Also, I am looking to have the stock software on this phone, but still keep it rooted to be able to use the hotspot. Would this be the correct link to downloading that? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282415
Thanks for the help everyone. You guys are why XDA rules the roost!
Yes that is the rom for installing in cwm...., now about sd card go into cwm and mount internal and hook up to computer with usb .....the newer cwm versions can do this some of the first one could not .....if your computer then sees the phone put room on internal and flash if not then you will have to odin or use card

I'm not entirely sure. He doesn't remember what ROM he had, only the kernel (Zedomax v3) that he had installed. I tried doing the deodexed package first and nothing happened. When I went to the stock package it changed the boot screen to the Sprint version but just loops endlessly. Had I not done the factory reset I would've had more details but I haven't been able to load up anything since then.

[Q] "secure check fail" when trying to restore stock image w/ Odin (AT&T)
I bought an AT&T Galaxy S III today, and was pretty unsuccessful in rooting it -- mostly due to the fact that every time I tried to boot into "recovery", I would only get a flash of it before a blank screen. I tried several guides and, until a little while ago, I was at least still able to boot normally and use the phone. Now, not only can I not get into recovery mode, if I try to boot normally I only get a flash of the "Samsung" screen before it goes black and nothing else happens. The only mode that I can boot into is Download mode.
At this point, I just want to get back to a working stock ROM. I followed a guide from "galaxys3root"'s website (I can't post links because I'm a new user) because it was the only one that linked to what looked like a full stock image instead of some 10 mb file, but I got an error in Download mode that said, "SECURE CHECK FAIL: aboot." I've only been able to find one other thread that features that error, and it seems to be archived.
Am I screwed, or is there any way I can get back to a working ROM? Has anyone else worked through this same problem?
update: I've tried now with several different images (including a "May 2012" one and a "July 2012" one), and it's the same error message for each:
a red "secure check fail: aboot" on the phone, and a similar error in Odin:
Code:
<ID:0/003> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/003> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/003> aboot.mbn
<ID:0/003> NAND Write Start!!

Volume up + Home + Power. I've watched youtube videos and made sure I was doing exactly the same thing, but all I get is a flash of "Samsung" with some blue text in the top left corner that doesn't last long enough to read before it just goes black.

Yes, I'm unzipping the files. I've tried 3.07, 3.04, and 1.85, all with the same result.
If it means anything, I'm doing this all through a virtual machine -- I'm really running Linux, with a Windows 7 client in Virtualbox. USB connections to the virtual machine seem to be normal so I'm not sure if it would contribute anything, but who knows. I'll probably try all this again tomorrow on an actual Windows machine.
1.85 is the one I've been using with no problems but yeah...try a window machine.

Lookup Flash/NonTrip under Android DEV section of i747.
The best method and very reliable.
Going forward - use only xda for all your Android needs!

The aboot.mbn file will not flash if you are trying to downgrade the bootloader.
I recently acquired an Epic 4G Touch that wouldn't boot into the stock ROM. I thought "Awesome! The ROM must be corrupted. I'll just Odin it back to stock and have a new SG2." Well, I tried Odining it back to stock. I tried the Gingerbread EL29 stock tar image and it hung on the Sbl.bin. I thought maybe my download was just corrupt but after trying 2 other GB odin images it still wouldn't flash. Then I tried flashing CWM recovery through odin and that hung at NAND Write Start. I've switched cables, USB slots and computers. I'm at a loss as to why this is happening. I would really like to get this phone running so I can upgrade my SGS1.
Edit- Just to clarify, I never tried to flash anything through CWM. I tried flashing a kernel that had CWM through Odin.

Agreed.
Op - You're trying to write to the phone and, my guess is, you're making a bad situation worse since your getting partial writes. Especially that first screen where pit was mapped and partial flash took, such as boot.
Dont know where crawrj is, but try reaching out to Garwynn. He knows A LOT.

What? When did I say I was flashing through CWM? I've never even been able to boot to CWM. I said I was trying to flash CWM through download mode which failed. When I try to boot, it sticks at the Samsung Galaxy S2 kernel load screen. When I try to boot into recovery it sticks at the Samsung Galaxy S2 kernel load screen.

Sorry. I misread the OP.
Ok. Try this to get into Recovery
Press and hold the vol up+power button until the splash screen shows up
After the splash shows release the power button and then continue to hold the vol up button. It should take you right to recovery.

I've done this atleast 20 times (21 now after this post) and it just sticks at the Samsung Galaxy S2 screen. I'm sure I screwed it even further by trying to flash CWM recovery. When I first got it, it booted into the recovery screen but wouldn't actually fully load into recovery. I would just get the Android character but no text. These are the weirdest issues I've ever had with an Android device.

That is very strange...
Do you have an external SD card installed? If so, remove it and try to boot into recovery again.

It fails every time it trys to flash files to the NAND memory. Does this mean the internal storage is screwed?

That is possible. You can try to call Sprint and tell them you/a friend was trying to update to ICS and rebooted and it wont boot fully. Act dumb and see if they will replace it. Since it won't boot to anything at all, there is really no way for them to tell. Just say that you bought it from said friend. It is worth a shot. I have done it before with AT&T when I screwed up a Captivate doing a hardware mod.
I just told them that I bought it online and tried to update it but after the update, it wouldn't power on. They let me replace it.

Either that or try J-Tag. But I don't know if that will fix it.
That and it's 50 bucks and a time to wait..

OK I will definetly try that, thanks. If they don't replace it, I will just sell it for parts and keep using my Epic 4G. Thanks for all of your help
Wait oh wait I have a few questions myself lol what odin are you using? Did you try any one clicks? Did you try removing the sd card and then odin? Did you try to leave battery out all night then try odin again with no sdcard?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I tried 2 different versions of Odin;1.x and 3.x. I used multiple one clicks. I pulled the sd card before flashing. I had to buy a battery for it when I got it and the previous owner had kept the battery out of it for at least a month. I really appreciate all answers but I really feel like I've tried everything :|

It is possible using a pit file would help. The pit file from when this phone came out would be best. Then run a gb rom in odin along with the pit. If you find the pit link it here before you use it. Wouldn't want more problems.

One Click restores are built with the proper pit of 9-16-11. But it sounds like he's already tried multiple builds.
Flashing each component isn't a bad suggestion but with using the pit, I wouldn't necessarily use just a rom, I'd use a tar since it would contain everything needed to restore the bootloader (boot, Sbl, param, recovery..)
Or try flashing an built bootloader to see if he could get back into recovery alone. There are a few already made in RWilco's Repo..
Anyone out there that can help with the Note 2 SGH-T889 .pit file? Thanks in advance, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Edited: I need the file, a download link would be appreciate it.

Is this to be used only with heimdall or with a PC and Odin as well? Thanks!
Both heimdall and odin, why do you need this file for ?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
Well, I mistakenly flashed a file that was supposed to fix the wifi when in the leaked 4.3 roms a while back, but I flashed the 7100 one, and messed everything up. I was still able to get to them rom and all but eventually was just able to get to the custom recovery and thats it, now it just stays at the logo screen. I think I messed up the efs and some other things
I can still connect to a PC thru Odin and it recognizes the phone just fine, I can get to the custom recovery too and flash roms but it never passes the splash screen of that rom.
You can try emergency recovery through Kies or flash stock ROM and then flash flash whatever you want.

I have flashed countless original Stock Roms, with every file they come with, and still hangs
I think it might have to do with the internal sd partion, Im hoping the .pit file fixes that? Not sure.

Have you tried a factory reset? Sometimes even after Odin I've had to factory reset. By the way since u flashed the wrong bootloader have you flashed the full stock from Sam mobile?

Is not that I flashed a wrong bootloader, but yes, I have flashed our 4.3 bootloaders, even our 4.1 bootloader and it always hangs. I did a factory reset, I clean the internal sdcard, nothing, still hangs.
I know my EFS is messed up, it says it when I try to mount in the recovery, it even says it in the regular recovery, but it was loading the rom before with a messed up EFS.
I now have a Note 3 but I have taken upon myself to revive my Note 2
I can't get the .pit file to work usin Odin, it always fails, also I believe my system partition is not mounting at all, nor does the preload partition.

And, just to be clear, that was following the emergency recovery process? There is the kies update, apart from the emergency recovery process. I hate to give up on a device...

It just wont connect to Kies. Remember, I can't load up a rom, so Im trying to connect using download mode. It says connecting and stays like that, I think it might be dead

I believe the Odin stock tar you're looking for is OK1 from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63868221&postcount=1
Most likely, the case is, you can't go from reactivation locked bootloader to reactivation unlocked bootloader. It's in the upgrade notes. Also check your phone display in download mode. If you were on one of those updates, your phone should say reactivation lock is disabled or something like that. It means the bootloader will allow a compatible flash. Enabled reactivation status would block even a compatible flash to protect original user from theft if he knowingly or unwittingly chose to enable it. You have to be careful because that's been described as an efuse. It could cripple your main board if flashing with it enabled. Maybe it takes multiple attempts to blow it, IDK but respect it... Try to get in the habit of checking phone display before Odin flashing.
Hopefully, it is not booting simply because there's still no OS. You wiped it and failed to flash because wrong tar was selected. I can say that the OB7 tar you flashed has a non-reactivation locked bootloader. So you cannot go backwards in Odin to it, if that's the case.
If your looking to flash an older ROM in recovery from the reactivation bootloader, it's been reported to be possible if you flash a 5.1.1 kernel after the old ROM flash in recovery. Stability and compatibility may vary by user and ROM. The question was even asked in this forum-KitKat Bobcat ROM IIRC- if possible to flash KitKat ROM and then Lollipop Android Touchwiz kernel and confirmed by at least one user. Nonetheless, no reason to doubt that but I recommend latest custom ROMs for compatibility.

Still looking for help.
Tried 0din, and the same error comes up as the post before.
Tried Kies but I need s/n and I don't have my box and no s/n on the back behind my battery.
currently downloading sammoblie rom. Hopefully this works.
the only other thing I can think of is putting a rom on my SD card and installing from TWRP

That may work too if you flash the right kernel with it. Well, that applies only if using an older ROM as I mentioned in my first reply... Did you read it yet?
BTW, KIES usually does that for rooted phones. It may only work if you set it up with same phone before root but unsure.

That's OK, don't need it. That confirms you have you a newer bootloader. That tar is blocked in Odin, for you. Best to move forward with Odin rather than backward.
Some stock tars later than OB7 have even been reported to be blocked but being on OK1, I only know I can go back OJ6 in Odin. Didn't try another because of that fact and OJ6 and OK1 are the best lollipop updates, IMO.
