Can Not See Phone On PC, No USB Icon on Phone Taskbar - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I need some help! When I plug my Epic Touch into my pc using the Samsung usb cable both the computer and the phone beep and the battery charges but the phone does not show up under "my computer" and the usb icon does not show up in the taskbar at the top of the phone screen. I've tried enabling usb debugging, same results. The phone does show up in "device manager" under ports when it's plugged in. I've loaded all the drivers also.
Some history, I purchased this phone the day it was released and had it immediately flashed to Boost Mobile. It worked perfectly for two weeks. A friend put the zedomax root on it for me and it immediately got the LOS issue. I used odin to flash the stock EG30 stuff back on and it was back to normal and has been working perfectly for the last few weeks.
I just came across sfhubs automated root for the stock kernal. I'm trying to run the root but the computer will not see the phone so I can't run the program.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

A little more info. When I plug my wifes Nexus S into the same computer with the same cord the USB icon immediately shows up on her phones task bar and the phone is visible in "my computer" a few seconds later.
Her Nexus S is rooted and has also been flashed to Boost
Also, the Nexus S shows up in "device manager" under "disk drives" and under "universal serial bus controllers" but does not show up under "ports".
My Epic Touch does not show up under "disc drives" but does show up under "universal serial bus controllers".

Got it figured out.
SFHUB is the man!!!!
I guess the usb port was switched to cp when it needs to be on ap.
Had to dial ##8778# and switch it to ap.
It must have gotten switched when the phone was flashed to Boost.
Its fixed and rooted!!
Thanks again to sfhub!

Epic 4G Touch USB Mode
Found this thread and it reminded me that I had set my phone to CP but even reading the thread I still wasn't sure what I needed to do.
I was working with the phone to collect performance data on the network and since I really didn't know much about what I was doing I was just following directions I had been given. I started to think about when I had put the phone in diagnostic mode (CP) and started wondering if there was a different code to take it out of diagnostic mode.
Just wanted to add a little more detail in case anyone else is a noobie and not sure what to do.
##8778# enters diagnostic selection mode.
The three options are ..AP ..CP ..ALL
AP or ALL will allow connection via mass storage device.
To change the mode, simply type #8778# from the dialpad again and change the mode.
Verified on SPH-D710.
Thanks.

Have you installed the official Samsung Android USB drivers,
Code:
'http: org.downloadcenter.samsung.com/downloadfile/ContentsFile.aspx?CDSite=US&CttFileID=4507874&CDCttType=SW&ModelType=C&ModelName=SPH-D710ZKASPR&VPath=SW/201109/20110916042342248/Sprint_d710_USB_Driver_v1_3_2360_0.exe'
. The device should appear under SAMSUNG Android ADB Interface instead of Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

could you explain this? I cant detect my epic 4g touch with Odin,
what is AP as opposed to CP, my phone is trapped in the boot loader, it gets to DL mode but my desktop (windowx 7 64bit w/ Odin v1.85) cant detect it.
keis drivers are installed.

I have the same problem..

Ok great, so maybe we can work together.
tommorow im going to buy a blackberry micro usb cable and test it out,
I hear the oem samsung cable doesnt get the job done... which seems ironic but its worth the 10$.
Odin supposedly works best in windows XP and can be finicky, but truthfully my phone is not detected anywhere by windows 7, so i'm suspecting that its the cable, or the usb port on the phone.
Drivers are installed, and the phone gets to Download mode, so its a connection issue.

I have a gold tipped cable made by gigaware from radioshack and my pc still cant detect the phone.
I also placed the ek02 stock rom on the sd card and the phone simply cant read it.
I created a more detailed thread here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1442190

[Q] Why can't I install USB drivers?

Hi, I am just wondering why I can't install USB drivers for my phone. I have tried everything that I could find but I still can't make my PC "see" my phone. I tried HTC Sync and that didn't work either.
Does anybody know why this is happening? Is there some driver issue that I am not aware of? Thanks in advance.
What does your PC say when you plug the phone in via USB?
What does your phone do when you plug it in? (You should see options like in the pic below.)
If you have Windows 7, after plugging in your phone - try Windows Update.
If the phone does nothing when you plug it in - have your tried another USB socket?
You could try installing android-sdk_r10-windows.zip
There is a USB package that comes with it which might help but it probably won't. (You shouldn't need any other part or package that comes with it though.)
Edit: Does your PC see other USB devices?

What does your PC say when you plug the phone in via USB? It always attempts to install the USB drivers but it always fail to find one.
What does your phone do when you plug it in? (You should see options like in the pic below.)Yes it does show those options and I always choose "disk drive"
If you have Windows 7, after plugging in your phone - try Windows Update.Already did. Nothing comes up.
If the phone does nothing when you plug it in - have your tried another USB socket? Yes I have, it always try to do the same thing. I remove the USB Drivers from Device Managers but I always end up with the same failed process.
You could try installing android-sdk_r10-windows.zip I already have but nothing happens.
Edit: Does your PC see other USB devices? Yes it does. All my devices are using USB connectors (keyboard, mouse, usb hub, etc.)
I am not considering my phone as a faulty one as I tried to connect it to my Mac and it functions as a disk drive although it disconnects itself on the first minute of it being connected, must be because of some app or something, then functions normally. I hope I can fix this soon because I need to root.

Did you solve this problem? I have the same one.
A bad USB connection can cause these problems, use USB one if on a laptop or one in the back of a desktop model.

Try to use the other USB cable or origin USB cable.
Try one more thing. Change a new SD card
Is it second hand phone ? If yes, no comment and too many possibility.

Hi, I too am having this problem, just got a DHD but when plugged into pc charges but no promt for anything else like all other htc devices. Tried different htc sync suite versions and singular drivers, changed sd cards and cables but still nothing. Any ideas welcome.
Thanks
It depend of the ROM you have (the picture is for a sense rom).
On some you can choose an action to be always performed, so it never prompt.
Go in your settings.
And... clean the phone usb connector. Pockets are sometime dusty
Blow in the connector and try again. Easiest problems are sometime the ones we forget.
which rom do u use?
If you're running Windows 7 64bit, try deleting all driver files via Device Manager, then booting into Windows with the "Disable driver digital signature enforcement" option, then plug in your phone and try to install drivers.
Sorry for slow response.
Im running stock everything to my knowledge, and on xp, tried cleaning usb port, still nothing. Haven't tried different comp, will now...
Edit, tried Vista, nothing. Dunno what to do next.

Even in charging mode your phone should be detected. Most likely your cable is only for charging or it is damaged. Could also be your phone's micro usb port is damaged. If you are getting nothing on 2 computers it has to be one or the other.
What mode do you have your phone in when you try to connect? In Disk Drive mode your sd card should be detected as a removeable hard drive. And the drivers for this are included in all windows OS. No need to install any drivers for this mode.
Also many have issues with HTC Sync. Try installing MyPhoneExplorer. You can get it from The Market. And it will give you a link in the more information part to install the needed desktop software for your computer. Works well and has many features.

GS2 USB connection problem to computer

I installed Kies (including USB driver) on my Win7 x64. However, Device Manager showed "unknown device". The Windows notification area shows ‘The driver cannot be installed correctly for the device’.
I searched on Internet for solution. I found one talked about below options when dialing *#7284#,
UART (MODEM/PDA)
USB (MODEM/PDA)
They said ‘USB’ should be selected as ‘PDA’. And my GS2 ‘PDA’ is already the default setting for USB. However, when I switched the USB option to MODEM, my computer started to recognize GS2, ‘your device is ready to use’.. That was magic.. And the Odin was able to recognize GS2 in downloading mode (it showed COM7).. My questions are:
1) What does MODEM/PDA mean here for USB? Why MODEM works for me while PDA works for others?
2) While my GS2 connects to computer, I scroll down the notification bar, it shows ‘MTB USB’.. Can I run autoroot oneclick in this mode, because they require ‘USB Storage Mode is OFF’. However, I could NOT find bellow USB mass storage setting in my GS2.

Your phone needs to be in download mode for Odin to work, not booted to the OS. To get in download mode, power off the device, hold volume- while holding press and hold power, you will get a prompt, press volume+ , you are now in download mode

I know how to switch to download mode, actually I have no problem using Odin to flash ROMs..
I am wondering why USB/MODEM matters to me if I want the USB connection to work..
And I don't know if MTP USB mode is equals to Mass storage or not..
I need to shut down mass storage to run autoroot..

MTP is the media transfer connection, its ics new version of USB mass storage. There's some apps on the market that will do USB mass storage, I think one is called USB switcher, and another is USB storage watcher or something like that, I saw u say PDA and modem and thought u were talking about Odin cuz those are 2 of the slots in Odin, phone, PDA, modem, PIT etc lol. But yeah USB MTP is the media transfer protocol works like USB mass storage mode just under a different name with slightly different options. I haven't used the MTP too much cuz I'm on aosp so it still has mass storage mode on it.

No OS, OTG not recognized. Am I bricked?

Accidental full wipe of my Nexus 7 has left me with a no OS paper weight.
Fastboot indicates it's locked but I can boot into TWRP, but can't get it to be recognized by any PC and it won't recognize my OTG-USB (which has been recognized by others).
Any ideas as to how to get her up and running would be greatly appreciated.

Did you mount the OTG usb in TWRP or just looked for it to auto detect?
Btw, this belongs in the Q & A section, so ask a mod to move it
I am unable to select/check mount the OTG while in TWRP. The OTG is formatted correctly as the OTG is readable on other devices, but it seems like it just isn't being found by the N7. I'm baffled.

I am able to fastboot, but still can't get the pc to recognize that it's connected. The tablet takes a charge, but the pc never acknowledges that a device is connected, device manager never indicates a device is connected.
-If you don't have any Roms on internal storage, that's no good since you have TWRP.
-Try A different USB cable.
-Definitly make sure you have installed Google USB drivers.
-Have you tried ADB Sideload in twrp? Maybe TWRPs' adb will work better.
It looks like you need to update your bootloader as well, go with the latest factory images.
If you need to know where to find the above things I can point you to them. You must eventually get the PC to recognise it in fastboot though.

Thanks. Everything hinges on the PC being able to recognize that I'm attempting to connect the tablet (or for the tablet to recognize that I've attached the OTG).
I have tried multiple USB cables and ensured that the drivers are installed on the multiple PCs I've attached to.
I have tried to ADB sideload in TWRP, but since none of the PCs recognize that the tablet is connected to the PC, ADB won't work.
Again, it's not that the drivers are not installed, but rather the PC not recognizing that I have attached a device through the USB (no sound, no pop-up, nothing in the device manager). It is extremely frustrating, especially since the device charges via the USB from the PC.

Still no luck, any other recommendations?
Device Manager doesn't even show something like "qualcomm_qloader"? That's seems worse than any other hard brick I've seen.
-OTG should be FAT32 formated (probably is).
-We're you using Lollipop with that 4.02 bootloader? I believe that was A prerequisite for installing Lollipop which may have cause the tablet to not show on the PC.
- Nexus Root Toolkit has different methods for installing drivers http://www.wugfresh.com/faqs/

Shows holding power for A minute got theres' to start doing stuff. It' A different recovery issue though.
Hate to be A downer, I hard bricked A galaxy s4 I had for only 5 days last month. That never turned on again. It's not fun.
I had the same issue. The only way I could fix was a full adb restore. I tried several other ways and none worked.

Nothing shows in the device manager. I was using KitKat on the tablet.
Turns on without an issue, opens TWRP with no issue.
when connected to the PC nothing occurs, not when it's on the Google screen, not when it's in TWRP, not in Fastboot, not when it's restarting. Nothing.
if it was the driver being missing, I'd at least see the device attached, just not communicating properly
sorry to hear about your GS4

it's alright, thanks for the thought.
I'm just hoping since I can get into TWRP someone has an idea of how I can get it to recognize the OTG or the PC to see it and I can get into ADB.
Corrupted usb port on the tablet? Maybe broken pin. Try to examine it. It can happen that it is being charged but not identified by the pc because of a faulty port. Try live install of ubuntu to chech if it sees the device.

the port looks perfectly fine, I was thinking the same thing, but there doesn't seem to be any damage. I almost wish it was damaged so I could at least assume that's the problem and just trash the thing.

MTP Not Working Windows 10

I am unable to get Windows to mount my Pixel XL in MTP mode. I have the Pixel's screen turned on and unlocked, and the connection option on the phone's pull down menu is set to transfer files. Windows is able to mount the phone when it is in picture transfer mode, but not in MTP mode.. When I look in Window's device manager I can see that the MTP device is connected but I'm getting a yellow triangle exclamation, as in the driver is no good. I uninstalled the driver and tried letting Windows reinstall to no avail. I have searched the web for MTP drivers for Windows, but I can't really find anything. The specific version of Windows that I am using is Windows 10 Education 64.
The main reason for my concern is that I am about to attempt to apply the new root method that is available, and I wasn't sure if I needed to be connected successfully via MTP before I get the ball rolling with ADB. I do have the ADB drivers installed, along with ADB and fastboot and that seems to be working fine. When I run the command 'adb devices' the console shows that my Pixel XL is connected. I am assuming that I should be good to go on that front, but I still want to know why MTP is not working on Windows, and how I can fix it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Here's a screen shot of what Window's device manager is showing me.

I tried that already. I stumbled across it while searching for a solution. The adb and fastboot parts worked well but not the regular mtp drivers. I think maybe the problem has to do with Windows itself.
I had a similar issue with my Pixel C tablet. I don't remember which driver that I had to use but I eventually got it to work. I believe that I ended up needing PDANet to resolve. I am using the same computer for my Google Pixel phone. I have successfully been able to use MTP on my Google Pixel phone and have access to all the files via file explorer.
I noticed the same thing. When I first attached my phone to the laptop I could see the phone in device manager. Couldn't get into internal storage. Changed the phone from mtp to picture mode then back to mtp and was able to get in. I have to use this method whenever I attach my phone to the laptop using Windows 10. I didn't get any yellow exclamation signs at any time.
plug your phone to your computer then check the notifications, tap on the USB charging this device for other options...just tick the usb to transfer files ....

This was from Microsoft's site, is a little quicker. It would be nice if this got fixed.
(1) Go to C:\Windows\INF
(2) Type "wpdmtp.inf" in search bar provided to the right of the address bar in Windows 10.

I've found that switching from a USB 3.0 port to a USB 2.0 port fixes all file transfer issues with the Pixel XL. Anyone else seeing that? Any ideas why?

I don't know if it's a coincidence because USB 3.0 is still not fully supported or functional on all new motherboards. Even the brands that claim to and brag about having it still have a half ace implementation of it. I'm looking at you Asus and Gigabyte!!! :crying: I have had to stop using their boards because I've gotten too many complaints from customers.
I can never get any 3.0 device to run off my 3.0 ports, wtf?! I can get flash drives to work all day for sure though!!!:silly:
i'm running an ASUS MB too...perhaps there are more variables to this equation than we want to believe.

I'll grant you that, some of those things happen to me too. But as for a driver not recognizing the device this thread fixes that. That doesn't have anything to do (afaik) with USB 3.0. This was just a silly driver that lost its way. As soon as I tried the method here everything was back to normal.

and in Device Manager it shows "Unknown Devices" under Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
I tried to update driver by right click on "Unknown Devices" and update driver software. But it didn't work.
For this problem i cannot unlock my bootloader.
thinks i tried:
1. Install oneplus driver
2. Install ADB drive
3. Update driver from device manager

tried, didn't work.
Instal ADB 1.43. It contains drivers for windows. When ask install them too.
I had similar issue about 2 years, when I had Oneplus One. Eventually it turned out it was coz windows 7s driver recognition went kaput, because some local usb device messed up windows 7s driver recognition
I am also having this same issue.., I am 100% sure it's not driver issue. I've tried in Linux PC., Even QCom Diag mode (to use unbrick tool) doesn't work... Only I'm able to charge phone at USB speed. Dash charge as will as OTG doesn't work. I even got a USB-C port replacement and still am having the issue. Last week gave my OP3 to OP service centre they also confirmed some issue in board and can't be fixed without replacing entire motherboard (Stupid folks!!).., I'm rooted and on Oreo.
Any leads/advice on this issue is much welcome...

I started to encounter this after flashing OB24 firmware (As far as I can remember) But now I have flashing both older FW as well as latest new one and nothing helps. I remember flashing that FW when phone was charging.. Do you remember from when you got this USB issue?

Atleast I'm safe in that way with Unlocked BL and rooted... Today fully I've spent flashing old Nougat TWRP sys_image backups and no use...
So all combos tried and I'm in total vain.. Devs if able to help Pls let me know., I can share all possible logs.. I am curious to know what's the problem or how its caused, so that others can play safe...

I've visually inspected MB and found no clues of burnt components.. Also OP3 is one of well-built phones hence I suspect H/w issue in the last place..
Just because of my wildest dreams I got into this prob after Oreo OB fw update, (I remember I was dash charging that time) Can firmware files interfere USB data port interface?? @jamal2367 Pls provide your guesses...
Hi Guys,
Update on this thread:
Since I got no response, I was somehow managing with my OP3 but now this issue has grown like blocker for me. Now despite connecting with PC, Charging line is also not working properly.
So, I connected to charger last night. It charged only till ~70% and phone was fully heated up. I tried reconnecting charger and phone doesn't show its charging. Then assumed some cable/charger issue and continued using. Evening when I connected back, it was charging but dead slowly. Like from 20% to 50% in 3-4hours! So, this deems phones as almost dead, forcing me not to use it any longer. Pls help with any suggestions to resolve this...
I am having the same issue if anyone found any fix please let me know
I'm having weird problems with the PC to USB connection on a oneplus 3. Im trying to get it to recognise so that I can flash it back to stock, but my PC always gives the "the last device malfunctioned" error and it always shows up as "unknown usb device (device descriptor request failed)"...
This happens in MSM bulk mode, fastboot mode and even in recovery mode. Tried it on a windows 7 and 10 pc, no dice, can't even install the driver. Tried a different cable too. It works completely fine on another op3...
Replacing the USB c port didn't work either. Has anyone had a similar issue? Charging works fine...
I'm hoping it's somehow a software issue because otherwise it's looking like a mainboard issue and these seem quite expensive to replace... so any tips or advice are very welcome
Thanks already

Try a different usb cable. I was using an anker usb c which finally worked. Got an original dash charge and it craps out. The usb c port on our phones is just weak compared to modern phones. Mine is giving out slowly and gradually after more than 2.5 years and I have to angle the connector at times for the charging to start. Guess it's slowly dying

It's not the cable. It works fine on another phone and I tried a samsung and anker cable....
My particular issue was similar to ROKLAF here in this thread
thread
my phone entered Qualcoomm crash dump mode after flashing pixel experience. When connected to USB it would show up as "USB Device Not Recognized".
MSM downaloder tool also does not recognize my phone
After updating
Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 Drivers - FOR THE 64-BIT ARCHITECTURE : https://www.mediafire.com/file/5wc5nk5adevatrj/QDLoader_HS-USB_Driver_64bit_Setup.exe/file
Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 Drivers - FOR THE 32-BIT ARCHITECTURE : https://www.mediafire.com/file/q1uynnim8arbim9/QDLoader_HS-USB_Driver_32bit_Setup.exe/file
OnePlus Drivers - https://oneplususbdrivers.com/#choose-device
I pressed the volume up and volume down and power button for about ten seconds, oneplus fastboot logo shows up, then it boots into Qualcomm crash dump again.
After this step, turn off the device using volume up and power button for ten seconds
and immediately pressing volume up and volume down button I was able to sucessfully register my device on MSMDownloader tool and unbrick my device via a fresh install.
