So my mom has an upgrade and really wants an Evo. She said shed be willing to trade if I bought the et4g on her upgrade so I could get a shiny new epic touch and she could have a miui'd evo. Heres my question to all you new et4g owners: what are the problems you've been experiencing so far? Either hardware or software I just want to know what I'll be jumping into after dropping 200 dollars...

none so far...smooth as my bottom...
I say, go right ahead and do it and don't even look back! Not to many people have the opportunity. Just traded my evo 4g for it there isn't one phone out now that can beat this. The battery is super awesome especially if coming from an evo. The browser is awesome get full sites using about:useragent, it's lightweight and the size of the screen is awesome. I Just wish it was the 5.3" that is out in Europe.
Dude... Get it! You will not regret it. There is a poll around here and the last time I looked, there are just as many evo users as there is epic1 users that moved to this phone

Tits eh? Couldn't have said it better myself. I have this sudden urge to lick the phone, now look what you've done.
I haven't found any bugs yet.
Phone's running perfectly for me. Sprint and Samsung have delivered well thus far.
There are only 2 things that I have found not working as of now, 1 being the Social Hub isn't allowing us to log in, and the other is the weather widget which isn't automatically changing location.
This is by far the BEST phone out as of now! I've been from EVO 4G, to EVO 3D, and I personally am not missing either 1 now. Couldn't of said the same going from the 4G to the 3D, as it was noticeably faster, but I really was never awed! The SII has definitely awed me again! Sorta like when we all first got our 4G's...
If you can make the switch, don't hesitate, and make sure you kiss your mom for taking your EVO off you and getting the SII
do it, you wont regret it.
i dropped my evo for this and it is well worth it!
I'm leaving my evo4g its been very good to be, so I will not dam the bridge I have crossed, but sadly say he will be missed.

I think it would be a little foolhardy to upgrade right now. Let the early adopters be the beta testers. Also, we don't know what will happen with iP5, Nexus', and Ice Cream Sandwich around the corner. Sit back and wait another month or two.

I mentioned two phone names and one operating system, none of the three of which have been since by outsiders. So how exactly are you coming to the conclusion that your phone is "easily ten times better than those phones"?

Your argument depends on there never being a good time to upgrade, that there is no such thing as a release cycle or big releases. If a new and improved phone came out every day or we knew nothing about future products and future release dates, your oft repeated but ill thought out argument would be true. In fact, the industry does work on cycles and there are big product releases so it only makes sense to purchase with those in mind.

You seem uniformed and blind to the difference between "big releases" and hype. The SGSII is a huge release and one of the most highly anticipated Android phones ever. Going back to your "beta tester" comment, the SGSII has been out for months and has earned near perfect ratings across the board. The ET4G is just a variant so please don't go down that road.

I think this devise is gonna be top notch for along time. I was worried that when Prime dropped I would regret getting E4GT but after having it for a couple days Im happy I got it. I love TW4 it works smooth and fast and if E4GT gets good support from the top delvs it will stay on or near the top for a long time. I always thought the Epic4G was way better hardware than the EVO and look how that turned out.
Get this phone and dont look back
Ok so I currently have the nexus s 4g, i am due for an upgrade. I was just curious whether you guys think i should upgrade to the epic 4g touch, or wait for a better phone down the line (galaxy nexus). These are my thoughts:
The epic 4g touch, in many ways IMO, is the best phone out on the market now. I have played around with it in the sprint stores and love it. But I have a few questions...I have read that the Epic touch has NFC technology, is this true? Also are there a lot of nice ROMs for it, i have searched the dev section but really theres no way to tell the quality of ROM by just looking at the pictures and posts. Also do you guys think i should save my upgrade for something thats coming down the line? I have googled searched as much as possible to see if there are any new sprint phones coming down the line and i cant seem to find anything that beats out the epic touch, besides the galaxy nexus which is not even confirmed for sprint yet, and no announcment of a WiMax version so im thinking if sprint even gets it it wont be until they get there LTE network up which will be for a while. Gimme Your thoughts...thanks in advance.
Be patient and wait for the Galaxy Nexus. wait for the news about it, see if they are going to release one for Sprint... if not get the Epic Touch 4g.
No NFC for the epic touch 4g. also, not many roms. development is slow but it will take off with a little more time.
I'd wait for the Galaxy Nexus.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
First things first, there's always going to be a newer bigger and better phone coming down the line no matter what phone you buy. Even if you buy a phone on launch day there's always something new in the works. That's technology, its constantly evolving. And don't go chasing fairy tales of a Nexus that isn't even announced to be coming to Sprint. Even if it was it would be an LTE device and that's a long time from now.
As for lack of custom Roms the epic touch hasn't been out all that long so there's only a few custom Roms out. But truthfully there's not much that needs changing or modifying to make this phone awesome. Straight out of the box you won't find much to complain about if anything at all. I was asking myself the same questions and I come to the conclusion that the epic touch is definetely worthy of an upgrade and even worthy of keeping for twenty months. Sprint. LTE. is a ways off so by the time that starts rolling out in a timely fashion, you'll be nearing your next upgrade anyway. Go buy the epic touch and give it a try for a few days. I promise you will not want to return it and go back to your current phone. Trust me on that.
The Galaxy Nexus probably won't come for quite a while so if you're anxious for a new device and don't want to leave Sprint, then the Epic Touch will be great. There are some issues such as loss of signal and no NFC included as stated earlier. I came from the original epic and I upgraded to this one since the next Nexus seemed like it would take a while to get to Sprint.
I was in your situation and decided to go ahead and get the Epic 4G Touch. I haven't had any problems with it at all so far and love the phone. There's lots of development going on for it too if you're into custom ROMs. The Nexus Prime will probably be great, but who knows when we'll see it. Like others have said, there's always going to be something newer on the horizon.
Get it its a beast by th time you think about it. Newer phones will be out just enjoy the now

Hi I own one and though the phone is great, the Samsung support is non existent. Also with Samsung you have to buy new phone to get the upgrade to the OS. I am waiting for HTC to announce their next sprint phone like Vigor. My experience with HTC has been much better...The only way Samsung with unlearn what they learnt from Apple is to let their sales get affected. I am telling this to everyone who goes ooh aah over my phone.
If you are planning to stay with Sprint and not looking to switch carriers, I would say buy it and enjoy it.

I think the phone is great, despite having left mine for ohhh say 30 mins in a steamy bathroom. No water damage signs inside sprint told me (I didnt tell them what happened obviously) but two weeks later after tons of complaining I got a new one and I am happy as a pig in poo. This "smartphone" maybe because it is my first one, but I can't imagine being without it.
When I purchased it was a couple days after I found out that sprint was getting the iphone, and after about two weeks of hard research (it was released in US MID september to the best of my knowledge) so I am looking forward to spending two years with it now. The two weeks (really 10 days because I rigged it up to work and got extra battery that I had sprint credit to my account.
The old phone already had drop marks and stuff, the new one go a TPU treatment right away and steinheil sgp screen protector 24 hours later. This, IMO is the perfect trio. Size of the iphone IMO is better, thats it. The screen on this thing will wow you with pretty much all you look at, it is fast, every iphone person that sees it LOVES it (ICouldGAF after reading jobs bio - ****), precesses fast, battery is nice, feel nice, fit finish nice. I dont want a metal phone, even though when I dropped it a few times, the edges that were worn looked a heck of alot like some sort of metal and it bent like metal in places, I also read it is somewhere (of course cant find link but maybe somewhere on Samsung site proper)

I would get it. I doubt the galaxy nexus is coming to sprint. This is the best phone out for Sprint and will be for a long time.

I would defintely get it, i came from AT&T's Motorola Atrix(the first one) and it was a great device and still is, had it since launch, but i been wanting a Galaxy S phone. So i decided to go into the sprint store and check out the E4gT, and loved it, the phones that i was tryna decided between were the E4gT and the Evo3d, i didn't want the photon cause i don't really like motorla, and the iphone 4s was too high, plus i really don't like iOS(i love mod'n my devices and u really can't do much with iOS), and the Galaxy Nexus is WAAAAAYYYY OVERRATED, sure it's gonna come with ICS but nobody's gonna keep it stock for long, they'll end up throwing a rom over it, and the devs on the E4gT are active and will keep you happy with enough roms(and updates with them), mods, and themes until ICS comes to the E4gT
But back to the topic at hand, i definitely suggest this phone, buy it, give it a few days before u decide to root it to test it out, stay up to date with the forum and if u decide to root, the instructions are super easy and you'll have plenty of help if u get stuck(eventhough some may give u a hard time) but i'll definitely help u if needed just like i was helped.....now GO FOR IT! lol
Its aight. Once the LOS is fixed (hopefully) it'll be the a great phone to hang on to.
......
when its 100% it is an awesome phone and there isnt one out that Id want more, but because of the bugs me and the wife both slightly wish we waited longer to pick these up or got different phones without the bugs this phone has...
Id say wait for samsung to send out the update to fix the phone, then get it.
I have 3 Sprint phones in my possession right now. This one, the EVO 3D, and the Nexus S 4G. They are all great phones & each has some sort if advantage over the other. The Nexus S, will surely get ICS shortly after the Galaxy Nexus comes out. It is a great little phone. The EVO 3D is a nice phone & with the CM7 alpha on it, it's every bit as fast as the E4GT. HTC has already announced they well be updating it to ICS. The E4GT has a beautiful screen & is fast as hell. It's simple to use, root & also easy to fix if you mess something up from flashing. I would go to the Sprint store & play with these 3 devices & decide for yourself. I don't think Sprint well get the Galaxy Nexus until mid next year. Samsung has not mentioned one that ics is coming to this phone. The others have already said they'll get it.

Sprint has alot more to worry about than making the nexus a priority as their next samsung smartphone offering. They have their hands full with backorders of Epic 4g touches all over. I have been on the phone for a week, try getting one in a rapid fashion when yours malfunctions day 15 - one day after the 14 day trial ends - Jump through hoops. Been a customer since 1997 here....

I'd recommend this phone to anyone. If you use Stock kernel, LoS is so rare (I don't think I've ever gotten an LoS on stock kernel actually.)

Get it, this phone stock rooted is better than ANYTHING you have been running to date. The phone sells itself, but don't take my word for it, just get it for the 14 day period and run it stock and see if you take it back.
All my iphone friends look at the screen and wish there's was like mine.. Don't need it to be any faster.. And never had los..
The phone as a phone is excellent. LOS is not common but does happen. The hardware is top notch but Sprint sucks the life out of everything. Rumor has it that Sprint got a patch for the LOS but is delaying it. Sprint's data speeds suck as well. It is like owning a ferrari but only being able to drive it in a parking garage. I'd go with Verizon and get the Nexus when it comes out. They may charge more but at least they don't gimp you like Sprint does.
At this point I'd wait for the nexus too, if you don't mind it being a bit more expensive on your initial buy and the monthly rate.
Edit: I love this phone. I get LoS like once every other day, so that's not a big deal, but the slow updates from sprint/samsung suck, and the nexus/ICS just look awesome. This is a close 2nd.
People always look at my phone and they really wish they had a phone like mine.
I remember when the iPhone 4S came out and my seat partner in chemistry had one. I took my ET4G out and he quickly glanced at my phone and then at his 4S. I bet he felt very womanly when the screen sizes were compared.
Its really fast and the screen size is perfect for watching movies or Netflix. Battery life is amazing for me, I make it through a whole day with a single charge and heavy use.
I really recommended you getting this phone, you won't regret it.
[Insert witty signature here]
I had the photon for 3 Weeks, e4gt for 3 days, have not looked back. Actually came to this section to see what exactly all this Los stuff is all about, have not experienced any loss of anything yet. If you're on sprint, there's no better choice imo.
Oh and also best buy price matched Amazon
Having had and returned/sold this phone due to too many ridiculous issues/bugs, i wouldn't personally recommend it whole heartedly BUT do not take my word for it.
There is a 2 week return trial period during which you can judge for yourself the pros and cons and how it works for you.
Someone like me who needs a RELIABLE phone first and foremost, just the fact that it maybe gets LoS even once a day like someone else mentioned is not good enough. During that once a day who knows what important call one might miss.
What did it for me when i had the phone was when mine went into LoS and stayed there for hours without my knowledge and i was expecting an on the phone job interview. I happened to get bored and reach into my pocket for my phone just to kill time and found it frozen (service-wise). Rebooted and everything i had missed, calls/VMails/SMS/emails started flooding in, all from hours prior. I even missed the interview call.
Like i say, don't take anyone's word, be it negatively or otherwise, we all have our personal agendas. Try it out for yourself, stay within the trial period and decide if it's worth keeping. Matter of fact, Amazon.com is having a mofo sale on phones with new activations. Check it out.

Either get the phone, or don't get it, if you need convinced to get the phone, then this isn't the right phone for you. Go get an Evo 3D.
I've been itching to get off Sprint's network for awhile now. Unfortunately my EVO crapped out on my last night. Do you think it is worth it to pay around $400 for this phone off contract?
I also am aware of LOS issues which is concerning for me. Should I just stick it out with my Palm Pre for another year?
You want to be talked into buying the phone? Go to a Sprint store and talk to a sales rep.
You want to be talked out of buying? Come to a forum like this where people go when they have problems.
You want REAL information? Look up sites that have actual user reviews. I looked up several sites with user reviews, and the overwhelming majority of people give the E4GT 4 or 5 star reviews, (with most being 5 stars) and over 90% of users would recommend it.
LOS is definitely an issue that's out there, but it gets extremely overstated on forums like this because people come here looking for help or to complain. Most people don't post on forums just to say their phone is working great.
My E4GT is working flawlessly, and I wouldn't even think about taking it back for a different phone.

I've been given the opportunity to trade my incredible + $20 for a fascinate. Should I do it?
I am kinda really attached to my phone and I can get an upgrade as early as April anyway. I know the fascinate has a pretty darn good build of ICS working on it which is the only reason I'm considering it.
Like I said, I love this phone and am apprehensive to trade it for something else. ICS would be nice, but I'm not sure how many quirks the build has.
Any thoughts? The deal would take place on Friday so I dont have much time to sit and think.

Bigger screen... HELL YEAH
Less ram hell no.
-My life is a shooting range, people never change-
After Samsung's antennagate debacle with the first line of Galaxy S phones, you shouldn't waste your time with the Fascinate. I know it's been "fixed" but that was piss poor handling by Samsung.
No..........
I wouldn't take a fascinate for free. I know to many people with Samsung phones that just have problem after problem. No network connection. My mothers Infuse just turns off randomly. A woman I work next to hers drops 4G to no connection I've pulled her simcard/battery at least 3 times recently. My brother has a NS4g he was telling my yesterday he had no network connection or was dropped to 1x. Battery pull once again. A kid a used to work with had a galaxy S 1 random reboots and just stop charging. Another girl I work with also has a galaxy S 1 ive never seen a phone go into safe mode before. Battery pull. The main reason I passed on the GNexus is because it was made by Samsung.
Long story short NO

Of course you are asking a bunch of dINC owners
still I think the dINC is more future proof (even considering how old it is) than the Fascinate.
Yeah I've decided I'm not going to do it. The GPU is worlds better on the fascinate, but with an upgrade right around the corner and me being completely satisfied with this phone (heck I may wait even longer) I'm just gonna stick around. If the fascinate had 4G then it might have been a done deal.
Again thanks all for the feedback!

You're welcome!
I went from the Dinc to the Fascinate. Keep the Dinc. The only thing that the Fascinate has on the Dinc is the bigger screen and a better DAC.
I personally bought the DINC because it was the smallest smartphone available. Sadly, it still is one of a kind in that department. I would try out the ICS build. I am using it now. It's quite stable and will make you feel like you have a new phone even though you have a two year old one.

I have tried out the ICS build and I'm not very satisfied with it. I am hugely picky about the smoothness and responsiveness of my phone rom and ICS on the inc isn't quite there yet due to the graphics drivers not supporting the GPU acceleration properly. I'll give it another shot if that ever gets fixed. That was the main draw of the fascinate to me, same gpu as the gnexus, same smoothness of the gnexus.

Just my opinion, I would never trade a phone you are happy with for anyone's phone unless it was a large upgrade and you were sure you could return it. Many phones have minor annoyances which would make you regret it even if the phone was a minor upgrade. I run miui v4 and despite the things not yet worked out, it is still excellent.

Without a doubt go for it...Just saw your first post maybe you decided already...I've had my fascinate for a year now and the last three months of ics builds have been great. I've used both the teamhacksung and the gummy builds (which I'm running now).
Both builds have been for the most part stable from what I've experienced.
My buddy has two DINC's at the moment with one running MIUI, I wouldn't trade my shattered LCD stylin' fascinate for it...I soft bricked my fassy for two weeks before I got the time to read up enough and restore it, then I dropped it flush, face down on concrete that same exact day...
so yeah take the i500 or sure...save your upgrade if you want
I have a special place in my heart for the Fascinate, but the GPS problem was painful to deal with, no matter how many gpsfix.zip's people put out.

I'm thinking about making the switch to the SG3 in the near future (I'm past due for my upgrade) and want to start researching everything I can about the phone.
I know rooting is a breeze with Odin, but I'm looking for info on what I should keep on hand, like drivers, etc. Looks like CWM is the best recovery?? Or no?
How's the dev'ing going with this phone?
BTW, as much as I learned about and contributed to the Evo community, I'm hoping to make a good positive impact here, too, if and when I do make the switch
I like twrp recovery. Odin will be your best friend. If your phone is soft bricked and you have no nandroids, you can go back to stock. It's awesome.
Also - Of sprints current phone selection this phone is hands down the best in terms of everything in general (mostly lte connectivity.)
Make sure that your area has Sprint LTE coverage, as the 3G performance is pretty bad and the SGS3 does not support WIMAX. That's been the only real headache I've seen from people making the change. I'm in Atlanta, 4G LTE coverage is pretty good and I couldn't be happier with my phone!

Not sure about LTE here, but Sprint never did get us 4G in Peoria.
I remember form my Moment that the radios in Samsung phones were just not good. Hopefully, this has changed in the last 2 years
TWRP is a great recovery option. 3G sucks. 4G is good when I can connect. I mostly use wireless though.

There are some awesome dev's and themers working on this phone ... Clark44, Phantom hacker, Strong Steve, and Myn (who you probably know from having an Evo) all have great ROMs out. DazednConfused and Josh Beach, among others, have amazingly themed ROM's. There are also some close to 100% working AOSP ROMs out as well. So, lots of options.
Yeah aosp is booming the nightlies have been stable more then a month

+1 to ^^ and would love to see you on a GS3 you have been a great asset to the OG EVO. Your guide helped me many times
@casmi, thanks!
I have a few friends (online) trying to convince me to go Evo LTE, but I have just lost so much faith in HTC, especially in light of drivers never being released for ICS/JB, the concerted effort to lock down Hboot, etc...

I agree, HTC has been making things more and more difficult even though they try to seem otherwise. The GS3 was my first Samsung to root and it was so easy, I was ready to have to jump through hoops like the EVO. I was pleasantly suprised.
The development on the GS3 seems good and I'm sure will only continue to grow. I have a feeling it may be like the EVO as it will be around for a long time with continued development. Good luck in your search for your next phone

I'm pretty sure you remember scottspa or something like that. You can ask his opinion of the LTE EVO. He doesn't seem thrilled
"Pro:being to fully S-off bootlaoder. And then you can flash radios forward and backward. With elo lte, if you downgrade firmware,...hard brick. You look at this phone kinda sideways and it will hard brick (buy a GSIII) (And believe me, that hurts to say)
via xda premium on my AOKP'd Evo LTE"
found his quote
To answer your question, twrp 2.2.2.0 (lose your past thoughts from the evo) and aokp. There is also a miui for you too.
Screw HTC

Sdx? Yo we need more good people over here. A friend of mine got the evo and has problems up and down and isn't rooted

Whats up HipKat. Im in the same boat as you. Im past due for an upgrade and have been thinking long n hard(yes i said LONG N HARD) about which phone i want. I have friends that got the EVO LTE and love it, but they dont have the root and flash bug as i do. I have been scouring both forums on here looking for opinions. I have also been watching reviews online to see what i can come up with. Every onnline review i watch puts the SGS3 slightly above the EVO LTE. I think im leaning this way, hope to see you here as well. You have given me some good guidance to rooting and flashing and your guide to everything rooting in the OG EVO forum was my most visited thread!
I to came from an og evo, bought the evo lte and returned it for the s3, don't regret it one bit! Rooting much easier on the s3, and if u do brick, it seems so easy to fix. Another thing is updates, Samsung has been advertising this phone so much, for them not to push out jellybean asap, would be a failure. Just my 2 cents

Past experience with Samsung was one reason I was leery of this device. It seems that in the past(before the days of Android) i had Samsung devices and they seemed to stop support for them prematurely. I guess with the popularity of these new devices that would be a little tougher to do.
I made the jump from OG Evo. It was a hard decision but after seeing a friend's Evo LTE sense just seemed tired to me. I didn't even feel the need to root SIII until recently. You won't be disappointed. IMHO, the only advantage of the evo is screen brightness in daylight. If you work outdoors you may want to compare the two and see.

Yep, old SDX crew.
I'll have to go over there and see how much dev work SDX is doing on the SG3

Yeah. I think I saw JB for the SG3 next month, if I'm not mistaken.
I been watching reviews too, plus Wirefly has the 16gb SG3 for 100 bucks now

I do work outside, but the OG EVO is the same way and I get by with it just fine.
