Should I get the Epic 4g Touch? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Ok so I currently have the nexus s 4g, i am due for an upgrade. I was just curious whether you guys think i should upgrade to the epic 4g touch, or wait for a better phone down the line (galaxy nexus). These are my thoughts:
The epic 4g touch, in many ways IMO, is the best phone out on the market now. I have played around with it in the sprint stores and love it. But I have a few questions...I have read that the Epic touch has NFC technology, is this true? Also are there a lot of nice ROMs for it, i have searched the dev section but really theres no way to tell the quality of ROM by just looking at the pictures and posts. Also do you guys think i should save my upgrade for something thats coming down the line? I have googled searched as much as possible to see if there are any new sprint phones coming down the line and i cant seem to find anything that beats out the epic touch, besides the galaxy nexus which is not even confirmed for sprint yet, and no announcment of a WiMax version so im thinking if sprint even gets it it wont be until they get there LTE network up which will be for a while. Gimme Your thoughts...thanks in advance.

Be patient and wait for the Galaxy Nexus. wait for the news about it, see if they are going to release one for Sprint... if not get the Epic Touch 4g.
No NFC for the epic touch 4g. also, not many roms. development is slow but it will take off with a little more time.

I'd wait for the Galaxy Nexus.

First things first, there's always going to be a newer bigger and better phone coming down the line no matter what phone you buy. Even if you buy a phone on launch day there's always something new in the works. That's technology, its constantly evolving. And don't go chasing fairy tales of a Nexus that isn't even announced to be coming to Sprint. Even if it was it would be an LTE device and that's a long time from now.
As for lack of custom Roms the epic touch hasn't been out all that long so there's only a few custom Roms out. But truthfully there's not much that needs changing or modifying to make this phone awesome. Straight out of the box you won't find much to complain about if anything at all. I was asking myself the same questions and I come to the conclusion that the epic touch is definetely worthy of an upgrade and even worthy of keeping for twenty months. Sprint. LTE. is a ways off so by the time that starts rolling out in a timely fashion, you'll be nearing your next upgrade anyway. Go buy the epic touch and give it a try for a few days. I promise you will not want to return it and go back to your current phone. Trust me on that.

The Galaxy Nexus probably won't come for quite a while so if you're anxious for a new device and don't want to leave Sprint, then the Epic Touch will be great. There are some issues such as loss of signal and no NFC included as stated earlier. I came from the original epic and I upgraded to this one since the next Nexus seemed like it would take a while to get to Sprint.

I was in your situation and decided to go ahead and get the Epic 4G Touch. I haven't had any problems with it at all so far and love the phone. There's lots of development going on for it too if you're into custom ROMs. The Nexus Prime will probably be great, but who knows when we'll see it. Like others have said, there's always going to be something newer on the horizon.

Get it its a beast by th time you think about it. Newer phones will be out just enjoy the now

Get it!!!!
I made the jump from the Evo to E4GT and I couldn't be happier.
If you keep waiting for the next best thing, you will never get anything. No one even knows for sure if Sprint is getting the GN
anyway.

Hi I own one and though the phone is great, the Samsung support is non existent. Also with Samsung you have to buy new phone to get the upgrade to the OS. I am waiting for HTC to announce their next sprint phone like Vigor. My experience with HTC has been much better...The only way Samsung with unlearn what they learnt from Apple is to let their sales get affected. I am telling this to everyone who goes ooh aah over my phone.

If you are planning to stay with Sprint and not looking to switch carriers, I would say buy it and enjoy it.

I think the phone is great, despite having left mine for ohhh say 30 mins in a steamy bathroom. No water damage signs inside sprint told me (I didnt tell them what happened obviously) but two weeks later after tons of complaining I got a new one and I am happy as a pig in poo. This "smartphone" maybe because it is my first one, but I can't imagine being without it.
When I purchased it was a couple days after I found out that sprint was getting the iphone, and after about two weeks of hard research (it was released in US MID september to the best of my knowledge) so I am looking forward to spending two years with it now. The two weeks (really 10 days because I rigged it up to work and got extra battery that I had sprint credit to my account.
The old phone already had drop marks and stuff, the new one go a TPU treatment right away and steinheil sgp screen protector 24 hours later. This, IMO is the perfect trio. Size of the iphone IMO is better, thats it. The screen on this thing will wow you with pretty much all you look at, it is fast, every iphone person that sees it LOVES it (ICouldGAF after reading jobs bio - ****), precesses fast, battery is nice, feel nice, fit finish nice. I dont want a metal phone, even though when I dropped it a few times, the edges that were worn looked a heck of alot like some sort of metal and it bent like metal in places, I also read it is somewhere (of course cant find link but maybe somewhere on Samsung site proper)
JC

I would get it. I doubt the galaxy nexus is coming to sprint. This is the best phone out for Sprint and will be for a long time.
Sent From My Evo Killer!!!

I would defintely get it, i came from AT&T's Motorola Atrix(the first one) and it was a great device and still is, had it since launch, but i been wanting a Galaxy S phone. So i decided to go into the sprint store and check out the E4gT, and loved it, the phones that i was tryna decided between were the E4gT and the Evo3d, i didn't want the photon cause i don't really like motorla, and the iphone 4s was too high, plus i really don't like iOS(i love mod'n my devices and u really can't do much with iOS), and the Galaxy Nexus is WAAAAAYYYY OVERRATED, sure it's gonna come with ICS but nobody's gonna keep it stock for long, they'll end up throwing a rom over it, and the devs on the E4gT are active and will keep you happy with enough roms(and updates with them), mods, and themes until ICS comes to the E4gT
But back to the topic at hand, i definitely suggest this phone, buy it, give it a few days before u decide to root it to test it out, stay up to date with the forum and if u decide to root, the instructions are super easy and you'll have plenty of help if u get stuck(eventhough some may give u a hard time) but i'll definitely help u if needed just like i was helped.....now GO FOR IT! lol

Its aight. Once the LOS is fixed (hopefully) it'll be the a great phone to hang on to.
......

when its 100% it is an awesome phone and there isnt one out that Id want more, but because of the bugs me and the wife both slightly wish we waited longer to pick these up or got different phones without the bugs this phone has...
Id say wait for samsung to send out the update to fix the phone, then get it.

I have 3 Sprint phones in my possession right now. This one, the EVO 3D, and the Nexus S 4G. They are all great phones & each has some sort if advantage over the other. The Nexus S, will surely get ICS shortly after the Galaxy Nexus comes out. It is a great little phone. The EVO 3D is a nice phone & with the CM7 alpha on it, it's every bit as fast as the E4GT. HTC has already announced they well be updating it to ICS. The E4GT has a beautiful screen & is fast as hell. It's simple to use, root & also easy to fix if you mess something up from flashing. I would go to the Sprint store & play with these 3 devices & decide for yourself. I don't think Sprint well get the Galaxy Nexus until mid next year. Samsung has not mentioned one that ics is coming to this phone. The others have already said they'll get it.

Sprint has alot more to worry about than making the nexus a priority as their next samsung smartphone offering. They have their hands full with backorders of Epic 4g touches all over. I have been on the phone for a week, try getting one in a rapid fashion when yours malfunctions day 15 - one day after the 14 day trial ends - Jump through hoops. Been a customer since 1997 here....
As far as ICS, I wont hold my breath, what were working with seems well enough, no?

E4gt future proof

So I'm thinking of getting this phone with my soon-to-expire premier program upgrade (especially since it looks like we wont see galaxy nexus before the end of december), and I want to be sure this thing will stay satisfying for two years.
Primarily, I want to avoid issues the epic 4g has: limited (although what there is is extremely dedicated) dev support and lack of cm/miui that keeps the phone stuck at outdated os iterations (which is mostly sammy's fault anyway).
What im asking is, is this phone a dev darling and do they promise to love it for ever, even after samsung abandons it in 8 months?

There is no such thing on the market. Once this phone stops getting Android updates, the community will have no choice but to dump it for the next newest. It'll probably be able to drive your car, have sex with your wife, and make banana pancakes. How will you be able to coerce a developer away from such a dream phone when all you have to offer him/her is a beat up old 2011 E4GT to work on? You just have to let nature take it's course. Buy the phone for what it does now or always ask that same question: "Should I wait for the next one or get this one now?"
which ROM makes Banana Pancakes?
Mine only makes Buttermilk.....
Premier program upgrade expires 12/31/12 you have a good year and two months to make a decision.

Your Premier upgrade doesn't expire in December. You have all of 2012 to use it.
If you were thinking you could have gotten one additional 11-12mo upgrade cycle, that would have needed to be done by 10/1/2011.
When it comes to electronics, nothing is future proof!
The SGS2 is a great phone today and while it might not be the top of the line in a few months it will still be able to handle it's own.
There is one thing I am jealous of with the Galaxy Nexus, and that is the HD screen. If the SGS2 would have had an HD screen, it would be right up there with the GN. I do not count ICS because the SGS2 will eventually get it. If the GN only had a qhd screen I don't think I would care as much....Seems almost like qhd screens didn't stay around as the top dog for to long. Guess the lower end devices will be going qhd while top end goes 720p to compete.
The point is well taken that there's no such thing as a future-proofe phone. I should have qualified that I am asking if this phone appears likely to enjoy EVO or HD2-like developer love. I was spoiled with cm-support on the G1 and I want to recapture those possbilities with my next phone.
I was on the phone with Sprint for an hour and a half talking about my upgrade status and they repeatedly told me it would expire on Dec 31, 2011. I guess I'll call again and ask again. I don't know what to trust anymore. If I get another year I'll be extatic.

Add ICS and a 720P screen to our SGS2 and you have yourself a phone that is equal to or better then the GN. We will get ICS whether it be official or not, so that will really even the playing field. So our phone is future proof until you start seeing quad core phones come out and well as Sprint LTE phones. But I would say you are good for at least the next year to year and half with the SGS2.
When the specs for the SGS3 get dropped, I am betting that will be a game changer and Samsungs flagship phone, not the Nexus.

IMO, dual core SOCs and 1GB RAM are the major milestone for smartphones. Quad cores will improve benchmarks, but probably not much else. Cutting edge OS is what's important to me now, which the GN covers nicely

Not quite. We don't have NFC or a barometer, either. The lack of NFC means we can't use Google Wallet or Beam... ever, and the barometer means slower GPS locks and we can't use any other aps that take advantage of it.
I don't quite understand why Sprint had Samsung remove the NFC chip... it's the only GS2 variant that doesn't have one, and aside from LTE, that's the newest feature everyone is jumping on lately.
This phone will have a lot of life in it, but it's not future proof.
The nexus has a cheap pentile display. Go with the epic touch you won't regret it. And it has a sa+ display!

I really enjoyed the support out there for my EVO 4G, and was a little disappointed at the lack of options out there right now for my shiney new E4GT (not complaining, stating a fact, back off flamers)
However, read through the forums for the other variations of the SGS2 and you can see it's out there for them. I just think Sprints baby is a little late to the party, but is going to get it's fair share of cake. Read through some of the Developer posts and there is news popping up fairly regularly about test builds of CM7 and MIUI...
I am getting closer and closer to getting this. I just know a week after I do the galaxy nexus will be announced for sprint.

I'll be honest, this is my first android phone (epic touch 4g), but I have been tinkering with anything that draws power since I was a little guy ripping apart old stereo receivers and what not! Sure, something with some more bang is bound to come out in the next few months or so; but in my opinion, a device with the capabilities exhibited by this phone are not going to be overlooked anytime soon! Some people may dump the phone and grab whatever is better on the market at that time, but dev is not going to halt for this phone anytime soon as far as I can tell. Even before getting this phone I've done lots of research on android phones and spoken to friends that have owned such, and this is phone definitely marks a milestone in my opinion. Sure it has its bugs, I get LoS once a week or so; but despite its flaws (which will be resolved by the manufacturer or else!) it is a great phone and will serve any user well for YEARS! Hell, I had a Blackberry 8330 for a few years, wasn't anything special by any means at all but with some TLC and mods it was a great phone for as long as I had it. The ET4G should last a Looooooong time...
Edit: I also wanted to say, to those who were saying things about the Galaxy Nexus coming out for Sprint. Sure you may be able to the phone with Sprint in the very near future, but is it not quite similar to the ET4G? Really I guess it depends on preference and such. From what I've read and heard, though...the phones are not THAT much different so I guess whatever feel you like best is what you should get! Cheers!

Have EVO 3D, switch to Epic Touch now or wait?

I currently have the EVO 3D and like it a lot. However, I really want to have ICS stock and no longer care about the HTC widgets. I also feel like ICS is optimized for Samsung phones.
With that, should I use my upgrade now for the Epic Touch or is there another phone that I should be waiting for? I know the Touch has only been out for a few months and when I look online, I don't see anything else coming out. If the Verizon Nexus Prime was coming to Sprint in a few months, I would absolutely wait for that.
I just don't want to use my upgrade and regret it later. I feel like phones with buttons are going to be outdated in 6 months and I hate having relics.
Thoughts?

I have been sitting on an upgrade for nearly a year. My thing is, after a phones been out for a month or two, you can pretty much get it on craigslist for the same price you would pay for a upgrade, with no contract. I am holding off until ces in january to decide how i will use mine.
I say keep the 3d. You'll have way more rom's to flash and keep you busy till a LTE phone cames around. Not much development for the touch. Things might change once ice cream sandwich drops, but by then LTE will be the phone to get.

We aren't in the dev threads. In fact, this is the Q&A thread... Meant for this kind of conversation. If you don't want to read "ANOTHER THREAD ABOUT THIS", then don't read the thread.
As for the phone, I love my SGSII. However, if you got your hands on an Evo 3D and managed to hold on to your upgrade, I'd wait. Come October we will see the Galaxy SIII. And who knows what we will see between now and then. The PS VITA comes out in Feb with a quad core processor... I can't imagine it will take very long to see phones coming out with similar chipsets.
Plus, it's easy enough to kill Sense if you want to. With a proper root/recovery, you could do anything with that device you so choose. You may have to kill the 3d to do a whole lot with it, but would that honestly be a travesty, if you are considering getting rid of the phone in the first place?

Without knowing what features of a phone are important to you, it is kind of hard to give an intelligent answer. The only thing you mentioned that you want is ICS and this phone doesn't have it.
What matters more to you; screen size, screen quality, build quality, radio strength, devlopment community, etc. Than maybe someone can give you a meaningful answer.
Super AMOLED Plus is reason enough to get the Epic 4G Touch! The screen is beautiful and untouchable. Seriously it's freaking beautiful!! Do you plan on rooting your 3D? I heard there's more roms and development for that phone over the Epic Touch. All I know is that there will be better phones probably by Summer you'll start hearing real stuff about the Galaxy S3. Phones are just getting better and better. I know there will be phones are next year that will blow my phone out the water but I'm happy with what I have until I can upgrade. The Epic 4G Touch is truly a great phone and will totally satisfy your needs (most likely). It also depends on how you like to use your phone. If you depend on having a strong signal, go with the Motorola Photon. My girl has that phone and she gets signal in spots where Verizon phones get dropped calls and signal. If your into multimedia and watching stuff, the Epic Touch is awesome for that.

A lot more developer support on the E3D. Don't get me wrong, we have a number of amazing and dedicated devs for this phone, but you have a lot of options with the Evo
I heard the 3d pictures sucked... I had the regular Evo & I was in love with it...it had a cracked screen tho... Only reason I upgraded was because I lost my phone.

I got rid of an evo 3d for the epic touch. Its a great upgrade but I did it when it first came out. I'd wait because your phone still holds its own. Remember, the GS2 is from may.
And aosp is no more optimized for Samsung as it is HTC. The gs2 may be faster due to the faster processor and GPU, also lower resolution.

[POLL] Getting SIII or no

So I don't know about all of you TW haters, I like it. I cant wait till the new TW on the SGS3 gets ported to MY ET4G
I will def get the SGS3 when it hits sprint. Until then, I'm sure someone will dump the rom before its released and port it over to us.
after evo 4g and gs2.. i am starting to miss a solidly built phone ... and the plastic gs3 is really not doing it for me.. and the tweaks in TW doesn't really do much to me.. as i might just flash a aokp rom anyways... for the speed.. it will probably end up getting a s4 making the cpu argument moot... plus i think s4 is plenty fast enough..
so right now evo 4g lte leads it for me. because build quality seems much better.. at least metal back (u probably gonna get some poly carb anyways.. because of the antenna penetration properties)... but i fear i MAY HAVE TO wait for iphone 5 announcement to see what they are cooking up with (gasp).. i dont' like their sw.. but their hw is still the best
I'll be getting the SGIII
been through two Samsungs and two HTCs. No problems with the Samsungs and even though the HTCs seems more solid neither lasted (both EVOs). I'm glad I had insurance on my daughters EVO

I might get it but the design is so ugly! I love my epic but the phone looks horrible, I'm so disappointed
I don't know for sure. I love the E4GT, best phone I have ever had or seen in person for that matter. With that said the SIII is a pretty ugly phone with new software, worse screen, and a better cpu. If the SIII wouldn't have a pentile display I would get it. I want one of the new Evo's. I've heard the SLCD screen is very nice if not the best screen out there now. I also like how it has removable battery and sd card expansion, but why did they have to make the Evo 4g LTE soooo god damn ugly. The One X is a beautiful piece of work. Ya ya it only has 16 gb and I have like 25 gb of music on my phone currently. If I switched to AT&T ( I dont even use 2gb of data a month b/c I am on wifi alot) it wouldn't be a thing to use google music with there being 4g lte in my area. Also sprint network isn't horrible in my area (avg like 1mbs dl) but 4g lte would be niceeee. I don't know what to do. Whats the point of upgrading to an LTE phone on sprint if its not going to be in my area until 2014ish. I'll have a new phone by then. Oh and also Ive looking into it At&T and VZ are cost the exact same as sprint.
I think I will pass on this phone. I am happy with my E4GT for the most part. Also the GSIII does not look like a upgrade from the E4GT to me.
I most likely will get the GS3. It really just depends on what the US version and what the Sprint version will look like and what kind of development will entail for it. The Pentile display kind of worries me. Just have to wait for the customer reviews for that one. But my next phone will either be the Galaxy S 3 or the Galaxy Nexus. Again it just depends on what the US/Sprint version looks like and what features it has. Touchwiz doesn't bother me. I can always theme the stock build to look more like ICS.
Is the case made from ceramic like rumor had it or is it plastic?
Unless its confirmed that the note is coming to sprint by the time the EvoOne is released, I'll probably just go with the EvoOne.

I don't really want to, but I will get it. I'm sitting on an upgrade already. Then again in August. So maybe the evo or note. Then again in 2013

I voted yes. I will get it, but not immediately. I have other financial obligations before buying a new phone.
This is why Im staying Samsung... a reply about the new devices
HTC is committed to listening to users and delivering customer satisfaction. Since announcing our commitment to unlockable bootloaders, HTC has worked to enable our customers to unlock the bootloader on more than 45 devices over the past six months. In some cases, however, restrictions prevent certain devices from participating in our bootloader unlocking program. Rest assured, HTC is committed to assisting developers in unlocking bootloaders for HTC devices and we'll continue to unlock additional devices in the future."

Hell no will stick with the epic till the next nexus comes out or lte is out in Miami and I will get a nexus galaxy. Tired of Sammy tw and sense. I do like the one x but sprint is not getting it. Also never bought apple but I feel the iPhone 5 might be amazing.

GS3 is out for me. Debating ASUS vs coming soon phone...

This is exactly where I am at with my thinking. After all, the GNex is a Samsung and I can always get the S3 down the road. I know Sammys inside and out so if I can get good battery on my NS4G, I am sure I can find a setup that will work for me. I hope I hear more about the Sprint version of the S3 before June 1st though

i dont see why people are complaining about the design of the phone. i think it looks awesome. like many others said i will see what the us/sprint version looks like. then if it meets my expectations i will wait a few months after release so that by the time i get it there is a root and a few custom roms for it out
I'm getting it! I been faithful to Samsung for sometime now. I know how we are treated in the States, but I don't blame Samsung

[Q] Epic upgrade woes

Ok so, I've had (and love(d)) my Epic since It debuted, but I feel it's time for me to upgrade. I'm kind of torn as to weather or not go with the GNex right away to take advantage of that 50$ Gwallet credit promotion; or, wait it out for the Sprint GSIII variant, which I'd guess would probably arrive sometime durring fall/winter. I've noticed some of our devs hoped on board the gnex bandwagon which Is always a plus for familiarity. Im REALLY torn about this :/ ...or I could go with the ep touch...*sigh* Any thoughts from current sprint gnex owners?

I don't own one... but I know a few people who do and they absolutely love the gnex. Imo you really can't go wrong with the gnex, it'll get relatively fast updates and the hardware is pretty decent... overall very responsive from the few minutes I played with my uncles today....
If your looking for a community like the epic you won't find it at the gnex forums. But its a really good phone... there are a few people I recognize but not too many. Its a great phone... I don't see why people are saying its not good and is a bad idea and you should just wait until the sgs3. But I'll tell you what, I don't regret getting it. Its a very nice slim phone, its curve is perfect and is very appealing. If going for an upgrade and don't feel like waiting its better than than the Evo.

[Q][Sprint] Should i get a galaxy nexus or wait

hello guys, this is my first post on the Gnexus side of xda. I'm debating about getting the nexus as my upgrade is here. however Ive heard its been plagued with battery issues, wifi issues that cause the system to lock up, and other radio issues with the 3g connections.
i would be coming from the original epic 4g. I guess the big question is, is the Gnexus worth the $200 upgrade or wait it out till some of the software issues and LTE is more available?
Where are you hearing these issues. I haven't seen any of those. I came from the epic 4g as well. I would say if you can't wait for the sgs3 the gnex is the only other option.
If you have the upgrade itch ... you won't be upset with your purchase. Its not weighed down by touchwiz. Its super slick even on stock. Its super easy to root. No more Odin scares. Tons of support. Its also a pretty decent pre forming phone. Its old hardware compared to the upcoming Evo and sgs3 but it sacrifices this for its openness. It makes more sense to have an open processor than have a closed one on such an open operating system.

At the end he pretty much hit the nail on the head. Except for the Evo Lte... no I'd say the sgs3 not the Evo.

Obviously you're going to hear about any phone having issues, especially one as popular and hyped up as the Galaxy Nexus. Personally, I've had next to no issues with mine. I ran stock for about two months then got into rooting.
Heres the thing: the Galaxy Nexus is about 6 months old (in the US) which in terms of phones is slightly aged. Don't get me wrong, the Nexus is an excellent, excellent phone and out of any phone currently out right now I still think the Nexus is the best when it comes to what I want in a phone. The Nexus was definitely worth the upgrade when I got it and I'm sure you would still be extremely happy with it if you chose to upgrade. What you have to remember though is that sometime this holiday season (about 6 months) there are probably going to be another batch of excellent phones being released.
You're in kind of a troubled spot, in my opinion, for looking at phones. You could get it now and it would be a great phone or you could wait for probably about 6 months and at least hope that something incredible will come out during the holiday season. Basically, it comes down to what you want. If you're really wanting the Nexus I don't doubt you'll love it and you should get it.
