I have been rocking my epic 4g for two weeks now and generally like it. I came from blackberry prior to that. I had been using a blackberry device since 2004 so I was hesitant to go to a phone without a keypad. So when I finally came up for my upgrade I had centered on getting an epic because of the screen quality (durability and color) and the keypad. However, now that I have caught this android bug, I am wondering if I would be better off with the pure Google phone so I can always get the updates.
Hardware wise the phones seem the same except the nexus has no keypad and no microsd slot (weird). So my question is would it be worth waiting to get the nexus? Is samsung that horrible at updating phones?
Thanks in advance for the advice.

This has been discussed a lot already. You may want to check through the general section for more commentary. Of course, this being an Epic forum, you won't find many people touting the Nexus. That said, they are similar from a hardware perspective. Nexus does have the nfc chip for what its worth. The only debacle that I have experienced was the 6 month wait for 2.2, which is kind of a big deal to me. Mainly because 2.2 has flash support. But going forward, I'm not too concerned about getting 2.3. Its not vastly superior to 2.2, nor does it sport any specific feature that I currently lack. I'm sticking with Epic until its time to upgrade in a year.
I planned on jumping ship for the nexus s. I even pre ordered it in full. Over $1000 with accessories. After doing some research and seeing what t-miller is up to I plan on staying with the epic.

I agree, but since you've had the Epic for 2 weeks and are still in the return/exchange window I would recommend you at least give the Nexus a look.

Yeah that's not such a bad idea. At least check it out before passing the point of no return.
That's true. You will still be on your 30 day return/exchange window. Go to a store and try it out for yourself. There isn't a big difference but it is a google phone so u will get all the upgrades very fast.

Ok so I currently have the nexus s 4g, i am due for an upgrade. I was just curious whether you guys think i should upgrade to the epic 4g touch, or wait for a better phone down the line (galaxy nexus). These are my thoughts:
The epic 4g touch, in many ways IMO, is the best phone out on the market now. I have played around with it in the sprint stores and love it. But I have a few questions...I have read that the Epic touch has NFC technology, is this true? Also are there a lot of nice ROMs for it, i have searched the dev section but really theres no way to tell the quality of ROM by just looking at the pictures and posts. Also do you guys think i should save my upgrade for something thats coming down the line? I have googled searched as much as possible to see if there are any new sprint phones coming down the line and i cant seem to find anything that beats out the epic touch, besides the galaxy nexus which is not even confirmed for sprint yet, and no announcment of a WiMax version so im thinking if sprint even gets it it wont be until they get there LTE network up which will be for a while. Gimme Your thoughts...thanks in advance.
Be patient and wait for the Galaxy Nexus. wait for the news about it, see if they are going to release one for Sprint... if not get the Epic Touch 4g.
No NFC for the epic touch 4g. also, not many roms. development is slow but it will take off with a little more time.
I'd wait for the Galaxy Nexus.

First things first, there's always going to be a newer bigger and better phone coming down the line no matter what phone you buy. Even if you buy a phone on launch day there's always something new in the works. That's technology, its constantly evolving. And don't go chasing fairy tales of a Nexus that isn't even announced to be coming to Sprint. Even if it was it would be an LTE device and that's a long time from now.
As for lack of custom Roms the epic touch hasn't been out all that long so there's only a few custom Roms out. But truthfully there's not much that needs changing or modifying to make this phone awesome. Straight out of the box you won't find much to complain about if anything at all. I was asking myself the same questions and I come to the conclusion that the epic touch is definetely worthy of an upgrade and even worthy of keeping for twenty months. Sprint. LTE. is a ways off so by the time that starts rolling out in a timely fashion, you'll be nearing your next upgrade anyway. Go buy the epic touch and give it a try for a few days. I promise you will not want to return it and go back to your current phone. Trust me on that.
The Galaxy Nexus probably won't come for quite a while so if you're anxious for a new device and don't want to leave Sprint, then the Epic Touch will be great. There are some issues such as loss of signal and no NFC included as stated earlier. I came from the original epic and I upgraded to this one since the next Nexus seemed like it would take a while to get to Sprint.
I was in your situation and decided to go ahead and get the Epic 4G Touch. I haven't had any problems with it at all so far and love the phone. There's lots of development going on for it too if you're into custom ROMs. The Nexus Prime will probably be great, but who knows when we'll see it. Like others have said, there's always going to be something newer on the horizon.
Get it its a beast by th time you think about it. Newer phones will be out just enjoy the now

I made the jump from the Evo to E4GT and I couldn't be happier.
If you keep waiting for the next best thing, you will never get anything. No one even knows for sure if Sprint is getting the GN

Hi I own one and though the phone is great, the Samsung support is non existent. Also with Samsung you have to buy new phone to get the upgrade to the OS. I am waiting for HTC to announce their next sprint phone like Vigor. My experience with HTC has been much better...The only way Samsung with unlearn what they learnt from Apple is to let their sales get affected. I am telling this to everyone who goes ooh aah over my phone.
If you are planning to stay with Sprint and not looking to switch carriers, I would say buy it and enjoy it.

I think the phone is great, despite having left mine for ohhh say 30 mins in a steamy bathroom. No water damage signs inside sprint told me (I didnt tell them what happened obviously) but two weeks later after tons of complaining I got a new one and I am happy as a pig in poo. This "smartphone" maybe because it is my first one, but I can't imagine being without it.
When I purchased it was a couple days after I found out that sprint was getting the iphone, and after about two weeks of hard research (it was released in US MID september to the best of my knowledge) so I am looking forward to spending two years with it now. The two weeks (really 10 days because I rigged it up to work and got extra battery that I had sprint credit to my account.
The old phone already had drop marks and stuff, the new one go a TPU treatment right away and steinheil sgp screen protector 24 hours later. This, IMO is the perfect trio. Size of the iphone IMO is better, thats it. The screen on this thing will wow you with pretty much all you look at, it is fast, every iphone person that sees it LOVES it (ICouldGAF after reading jobs bio - ****), precesses fast, battery is nice, feel nice, fit finish nice. I dont want a metal phone, even though when I dropped it a few times, the edges that were worn looked a heck of alot like some sort of metal and it bent like metal in places, I also read it is somewhere (of course cant find link but maybe somewhere on Samsung site proper)
JC
I would get it. I doubt the galaxy nexus is coming to sprint. This is the best phone out for Sprint and will be for a long time.
Sent From My Evo Killer!!!
I would defintely get it, i came from AT&T's Motorola Atrix(the first one) and it was a great device and still is, had it since launch, but i been wanting a Galaxy S phone. So i decided to go into the sprint store and check out the E4gT, and loved it, the phones that i was tryna decided between were the E4gT and the Evo3d, i didn't want the photon cause i don't really like motorla, and the iphone 4s was too high, plus i really don't like iOS(i love mod'n my devices and u really can't do much with iOS), and the Galaxy Nexus is WAAAAAYYYY OVERRATED, sure it's gonna come with ICS but nobody's gonna keep it stock for long, they'll end up throwing a rom over it, and the devs on the E4gT are active and will keep you happy with enough roms(and updates with them), mods, and themes until ICS comes to the E4gT
But back to the topic at hand, i definitely suggest this phone, buy it, give it a few days before u decide to root it to test it out, stay up to date with the forum and if u decide to root, the instructions are super easy and you'll have plenty of help if u get stuck(eventhough some may give u a hard time) but i'll definitely help u if needed just like i was helped.....now GO FOR IT! lol
Its aight. Once the LOS is fixed (hopefully) it'll be the a great phone to hang on to.
......
when its 100% it is an awesome phone and there isnt one out that Id want more, but because of the bugs me and the wife both slightly wish we waited longer to pick these up or got different phones without the bugs this phone has...
Id say wait for samsung to send out the update to fix the phone, then get it.
I have 3 Sprint phones in my possession right now. This one, the EVO 3D, and the Nexus S 4G. They are all great phones & each has some sort if advantage over the other. The Nexus S, will surely get ICS shortly after the Galaxy Nexus comes out. It is a great little phone. The EVO 3D is a nice phone & with the CM7 alpha on it, it's every bit as fast as the E4GT. HTC has already announced they well be updating it to ICS. The E4GT has a beautiful screen & is fast as hell. It's simple to use, root & also easy to fix if you mess something up from flashing. I would go to the Sprint store & play with these 3 devices & decide for yourself. I don't think Sprint well get the Galaxy Nexus until mid next year. Samsung has not mentioned one that ics is coming to this phone. The others have already said they'll get it.

Sprint has alot more to worry about than making the nexus a priority as their next samsung smartphone offering. They have their hands full with backorders of Epic 4g touches all over. I have been on the phone for a week, try getting one in a rapid fashion when yours malfunctions day 15 - one day after the 14 day trial ends - Jump through hoops. Been a customer since 1997 here....
As far as ICS, I wont hold my breath, what were working with seems well enough, no?

idk if u guys already saw this but they have the device advertised on sprints web site now along with another lte phone. Galaxy Nexus coming with 16 GB internal storage only? Seems a bit suckish to me since i have lots of apps vids etc. i think im sticking with my E4GT. in my op its the best phone right now.

I think the specs for e4gt is better, but I wouldn't mind getting the nexus cost its Google dev phone
Seeing as some of my pet peeves about the NS4G (which i still have as a backup) still made it into the GNexus (low speaker/ringtone/all around volume, 16GB Sprint version [why not 32GB ] etc), i'm not that enthused.
ICS on the NS4G hasn't been all that jazz as well, really not impressed, but it's on much weaker hardware so i can understand.
My Epic Touch on Blazer ROM is flyyying like an eagle and it's great with more than a day of battery life with regular use. Found a deal on a 32GB microSD card the other day for $30...

we can either have Nexus phone and ICS and no 4g or we can have E4TG and 4g and no ICS. By the time E4TG will have ICS, nexus guys will be porting JB...:-
)..unless the new phones ( all at CES) and update speeds (aka asus and htc) makes samsung feel that they might lose number one position...
Edit: I think I will pass Nexus and wait and see is asus padphone comes to sprint. My Tranformer is getting ICS tomorrow..I know they will be updating phones as fast too...
I'm gonna buy a Nexus from Sprint at retail and keep my E4GT hooked up for a bit. That way I still have 4G and can tinker (root/ROM) the Nexus... and when LTE is in Wash DC I can switch to the Nexus. Either way it will be nice to have both devices
I'm getting the galaxy nexus and giving my phone to my lady.I had a evo4g evo 3d nd now epic touch all had 4g but not available I'm my area Phoenix.

Sprint will want lte version on board to stay competitive, It will drop in August / September.
Anyway current GS2 beats GN in performance and specs except for display.
No need for me to waste upgrade on it.
My next phone will either be the nexus or the iPhone 5. If the nexus drops before summer, I will get it, if not it will be too dated to buy new and I will get the iPhone in the fall when the next one comes out. I am just sick of worrying about OS updates.

I am 100 percent sure my next phone won't be a branded Samsung. Their update policy is the worst. I know the nexus is Samsung, but google updates it. The iPhone is a great phone too. Nexus or iPhone, depending in when the nexus reaches sprint. Obviously I won't buy a year old phone lol.

Im rather sure my next phone will be when i have my new 2 year upgrade and it will be a nexus 3 by then and there should be lte everywhere aka end of 2013. Well atleast good 3g but lte would be nice too. There will multiple thousands of people that got the ET3g that will wait for there 2year upgrade. I mean might as well as well get my moneys worth out of this phone. Its not like whe. 2013 role around this phone wont even. Be. Obsolete except the 4g which i dont have here anyway. No phobes will be scroling faster and apps wont be opening much faster. New phones may ha e bettter battery life but not by much, ill ha e ICE within 6 months as a bonus. All new phonea screens will be 720 but at 160 density i can wait. Hell there will still be choke people on pbones way below this one in 2013 still. Im happy as can be and have no prob waiting till my 2year upgrade rolls around

Samsung is the worst, the only reason I keep coming back is because of camera as well as the screen. HTC phones are just average to me, and sense is too much of a hog. Samsung processors are fast, devices are smooth. It's just that software team blows, we never get updates, and half of them break more things.

Honestly the evo is a great phone but if i had a Nexus S 4g i wouldnt trade it for a evo. The nexus s 4g development is booming right now with ICS roms that are fully working. Also i believe the NS4G is better hardware wise as well
I've had my evo for close to 2 years now, and I still love it thanks to the awesome rom developers on this site. I'm not sure I would trade down for it if you have a newer, faster device, though.
Had my phone for 2 years. Would probably trade it for something else had it not been for the Deck Rom that I found on this forum. Phone still is very competitive with the rest of the models out there so for me unless i find a model that outperforms my phone by miles i'll stick to Evo. Plus with the new rom Deck Reloaded its better than ever (minus few minor things that need to be ironed out, rom was just released 2 days ago).

I've passed on "upgrading" from my Evo for 14 months, because nothing else was a good enough excuse to give it up. Still the overall best phone I've ever had, so far! I'm still keeping mine to play and hack around on long after my Evo 4G LTE is in my hands.
That's my plan too is to keep to OG Evo to use as a wifi device around the house when I want to listen podcasts and such that the wife doesn't want to hear. On that same note, can't wait for the LTE to drop.
I've had mine since the launch and I still love it. I also tend to stay with a given phone for long hauls; I had my Sony Erickson w810i for almost 4 years (I replaced it with the Evo).
I've had mine for almost 2 yrs. It's the best phone I've had simply for the modification factor. I like to tinker and try new things (ROMs, kernels, themes, etc.) w/o the lockdown hurdle I had with my iPhone. I wouldn't trade down for older tech though. I would think you could get one pretty cheap and not have to give up the newer phone you have.
I have the Verizon Nexus and have had tons of problems with data drops, the in-call audio bug, screen issues and a few other random problems. My mom is with Sprint and was wanting to get one for herself, but before she goes and buys one I wanted to ask around and see if these problems are as rampant on the Sprint Nexus.
I don't have any of those issues on my Verizon Nexus.
Nope but then again it was rooted as soon as it hit my doorstep

Sup Adrynalyne, I unfortunately have had terrible luck with the nexus, but you know I like to follow you around from phone to phone so I guess I'm stuck til you get something new, gotta have my bamf. But really though, I do love the device, which is why I have stuck with it, but since launch day I've had nothing but issues, and I'm definitely not the only one. I've had several replacements, 2 new SIM cards, nothing seems to help. This last replacement seems to handle calls better, but constantly drops data and signal, and the screen looks terrible, but I'm just tired of them sending me replacements so I'm dealing with it.

Well, whatever you decide, we have Sprint covered too for BAMF on the Nexus. I may get a GS3 on Verizon and work on bringing BAMF to that, but I don't want to commit and say that is a definite yet.
I understand the frustrations too. My wife's gnex has the crappiest screen ever.
Well, since this will be for my mom, she has an evo shift right now, so I think I'm gonna get her an evo LTE.
As for myself, I've been trying to decide what's next. Verizon has already offered to let me change to a different phone. My wife has the Rezound and she loves it, and I myself have always preferred HTC so I've considered taking one of those, even though it may be considered a step backwards, but the part of me that lives for the bleeding edge is wanting to see if they will go so far as to switch me to a GS3. Without a doubt though, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on you and ihtfp69 because I've always loved the work you guys do.
