[Q] ICS prospects for the WFS - HTC Wildfire S

So, HTC have announced and shown us yet again how much they hate the Marvel by leaving us with Gingerbread but giving most other 2011 models a promise.
So what do people think? The source is out so when & more importantly will ICS be ported on this device? I hope so. Also are the specs up to scratch?

Don't expect a ICS realise this year. Maybe we won't get it at all.
Face it: we can only unlock with xtc clip, that says enough!!

All we need is s-off.
The ICS part may be done by our good developers.

ICS will be done by Cyanogenmod in 2-3 months.

But I read that that ICS will be available for ALL 2.3x devices in the HTC wildfire forum on the cyanogenmod forum!
Sent from my HTC Wildfire S A510e using XDA App

In my opinion ICS can not be ported to Wildfire s.. It doesn't have the proper graphics performance to work on this low budget poor phone..Maybe i am mistaken though....!

I read somewhere that ALL 2011 phones MIGHT get CLEAN 4.0

Don't you think it would be nice if you could have one of those new Intel Quadraflop thingies in your WFS?

Htc Desire is a 2010 Phone though..lol
And Desire z is a 800mhz phone launched in 2010 also..
I don't think HTC will release ICS for them..

Hey Arkatis, do you know anyone that might have the xtc clip in Cyprus?

HTC announced only the first wave of ICS upgrades.
Until now they didn't say anything that makes me think WFS won't get ICS.
Obviously they will first update the high-end devices and leave the "budget" smartphones waiting.
From the replies I got from Tech Support I still have hope that we will get an official release.
Let HTC learn about integrating ICS with Sense on the Sensation and EVO 3D.
Maybe we should be a little bit patient...

If the boot loader of the wildfire s is not yet unlocked from them then no ICS on wildfire s either.. They only care about the high-end phones!
I don't think that HTC will come up and say "wildfire s will get Ice cream Sandwich!" Not a chance..lol

yes this information is correct, for Low end's phone only have ICS wait wait wait..............

ICS will be pointless from HTC on the WFS. Sense will ruin most of what's good in ICS.
Chances of HTC releasing it are pretty slim as well I think. Look at what happened with the HTC Desire and Gingerbread. A phone perfectly capable of running 2.3, but they came out with all kinds of crap excuses as to why it wouldn't be possible.. On an ex-flagship phone.
Seeing as they'll probably have another 5 models out before even the first wave of ICS is released, I can't see it happening. I doubt even my Desire S will get it from HTC.
We just need a software S-OFF fix and then hope CyanogenMod 9 gets the support.

I personally don't think that one thing (unlocked bootloader) has anything to do with the other (O.S. updates). This is my humble opinion.
I know they obviously care more about high-end phones but I used to have a Wildfire (the original, not S), it came with Eclair (2.1) and later got an upgrade to Froyo (2.2). This was a nice surprise.
Of course that now the odds don't seem very good for the WFS but I still have a little faith on this.
In the meanwhile I can't find anybody with a XTC Clip here in my region, so I will have to wait for a "miracle". Either S-OFF is achieved by software only and I might think of flashing a custom ROM, or HTC keeps their word on the updates arriving on phones released on a certain time frame and I will have to be VERY patient.
Of course that I would like a lot to have a phone with ICS "onboard"... but for now I will have to survive with Gingerbread and at least hope HTC updates the 2.3.3 to 2.3.5.

Durdy, you said it well: an "ex-flagship" phone. It's life-cycle is long gone now.
The HTC Desire (I had one but unfortunately it fell inside a portable latrine while attending an U2 show) was released more than 20 months ago.
How many version upgrades did the Desire get?
How many did the WFS get? Until now none. That's why I still have a little faith.
About your Desire S, I would say that you will definitely get ICS from HTC.
There can be no doubt about it. If HTC doesn't update the Desire S, I will never buy HTC again! Keep in mind that I don't own one myself but I thought about buying one for 2-3 months. The decision was based on my salary having other priorities nowadays, so I got a Wildfire S just to keep faithful to the brand and Android+Sense. I also liked the size/weight/features of the WFS.
I suppose the main question is that the upgrade "waves" may take too long for some of us to wait...
Of course that I am very grateful to everyone that is trying to port ICS to the WFS, to all nice devs that are trying to S-OFF without a XTC Clip, etc.
All HTC phones I had until today (except the WFS) were rooted and flashed with ROMS that I got here on XDA.
Kudos.

Thanks for the info ScottPomroy. This should be a sign that sooner or later the other RUU's will get it too. At least it solves some known bugs.
My WFS was Vodafone branded but I updated it to the latest European RUU (already 2 updates, still 2.3.3).

[Q] Any news on New HTC Sense for Desire?

Hi All,
Anyone know of any news whether we will be getting a ROM Upgrade or a HTC Sense update for the Desire at all?
Thanks
read on a thread somewhere in here that it is coming to desires in december.
Or u could always flash hd rom. Sense hd i mean
Patience my friend, it's coming in December
Aye December, my guess is it will be included with Gingerbread update.
Yay! Thanks guys, I love this board so much. Maybe it sounds odd, but I hate flashing ROMs rather than using the stock ones. Just feels dirty
Awaiting December.

experience.... first of all the desire is nearly a year old, waaay to old for htc support in my experience. secondly, htc want us to buy new handsets not keep our old ones, it makes no sence updating old hardware. and finally, the htc legend is only a few months older than our desire and they dont even have froyo yet, so you give me an example of htc supporting year old hardware with new software updates and i will rescind my comments

What you say is true, of course hTC would want us to buy the Desire HD & Z, but the Desire is less than 7 months old (announced in April, realeased in May/ June), not 1 year old, that means nearly all Desire users are still bound by their contracts. If hTC was to abandon the Desire, how would their customers feel? that hTC keeps on pushing out new models but leaving the older models to wither & die? I think not...
but only time would tell

good point were all second guessing htc anyway, only they know what devices there going to continue to support
If the new Sense doesn't come to Desire do you think it'd be possible to at least get HTC's offline Maps app - like they have with other features?
I bought a Hero when it came - so I know all about HTC not supporting devices. The first update I got for that phone came in June (Eclair).
And the thing about that update was that it came in two packages. It was a ****ty update I didn't use.
It's a fact that HTC doesn't support their own devices. When it comes to the Desire, I'm hoping they won't **** on us again, it's not outdated yet.
Or maybe it is to HTC - Still. I'm going to have this phone for another 9 months so it'd be nice with at least one official update.
HTC - "We make new phones for you.
Get rid of the old one, seriously."

Nothing makes me angry than ignorance. This is ignorance of the highest order. The iPhone 3G was released in July 2008 and it's still getting firmware updates. The Desire is barely 7 months old.

The iPhone is an iPhone.
The iPhone was not made by HTC
Apple makes the iPhone
HTC and Apple are not the same
Apple/iPhone - supported.
HTC/Any device - unsupported.
It's not ignorance. It's basic knowledge. HTC doesn't continue supporting devices. Apple might. HTC doesn't.
Then again, that's one of the reasons XDA exists.

dont call me ignorant, instead educate yourself, the reason even 2g iphones still get firmware updates is so apple can keep the tyrannic grip on what software they use!!! htc dont use this method, and after owning maybe 10 htc devices in the last 10 years, i think i can speak with experience.

Wasn't really trying to start a rumor. Just that gingerbread is expected from Google 4th quarter and new sense expected December made sense to me that HTC would wait and give one last update together.
i seriously hope that's the case, but it seems unlikely and I think It'll be up to XDA to get gingerbread onto the Desire...
It makes me kinda sad to read this. I know it's true and yet I always hope HTC changes their game plan and just support older devices.
I know they want ppl to buy their new devices but why would you buy a HTC you can only use for roughly a half year and then get outdated software.
Why not choose for a Samsung Galaxy S? mayB they have better support for their devices (just an example).
but I hope we all get proven wrong!!
There is a reason because HTC is going to upgrade our Desires. I think HTC want to boost the htcsense.com portal and for this, new sense is required, and what hardware can use new sense? Only Desire. So it’s a way to get a lot of users without waiting the sales of Z and HD

no, older phones can also support HTCSense, this can be proven as they announced that all future HTC Android devices will support HTCSense (both Entry level [eg.wildfire type] and Enterprise level [eg. Desire type]). but HTC are holding them off entry level phones as they are stingy and want us to buy more phones from them.

bit of a bold statement.
seeing as the nexus 1 and nexus s cpu speed is the same spec i see no reason why HTC will not upgrade at some point the 3 desire phones as these are there flagships. by not upgrading the standard desire they risk losing people who must have '2.3' to another brand. My view is in early 2011 they will roll this update out to all 3 and also bring the standard desire up to the HD and Z in sense terms. i believe they held this off for marketing reasons. Juts my view mind.

My thoughts exactly, if not, someone will eventually port .
Yes.. My feeling is that the desire will get the new Sense along with Gingerbread release.
Well.. even if they dont release it officially for Desire, they will have to release it anyway for the Z/HD and our mods can port it in no time. Our Desires dont have the hardware limitation (especially internal storage with A2SD/D2SD). Then we desire users can flash those roms and show the finger to HTC...
We have the mods... they are our gods!!
Market reason?
With the 2 years warranty there must be not only assistance in case of broken phone, but also the confirmation of continous upgrading with new software, bugfix until the 2 years are passed and 'til the phone risk not to support th upgrading.
This should be the real 2 year warranty so much declared in the instructions and things like that

Gingerbread Update

When will it come??
Late April to May was the last I heard, but will it have HTC Sense 2.1?

Looks like Samsung beat HTC this time, Galaxy S in EU recieved Gingerbread update today.

For me this is another important point for decision between SGS2 and HTC Sensation.
bit disappointed that samsung beat htc to pushing out gingerbread, hoping to see the update come soon though, especially with the sign of the leaked gingerbread update
Typed on Motorola Xoom
gingerbread leaked for Desire
I cooked ROM and flashed a2sd works. Updated Radio its based on the old Sense with some tweak. Had old marker but was able to update Vending apk. Unfortunately, because don't post often unless I can contribute I'm considered a new member and am not allowed to post in the development area or upload files. I based by ROM on leedroid's previous roms as in my opinion he is one of the top 2 developers working on HTC Desire ROMs.
Anyhow, his version is set to be out tonight. Search the forum threads. Again not new sense but its gingerbread and its a begining.
Acc to Eurodroid "HTC Desire Android 2.3 update coming in the middle of May" at least for the Three/UK customers. anyway, it will -soon or later- come to all our Desires.
Personally, I will be keep waiting until my contract expiry date comes (~Apr 2012) with better feelings against HTC if I get this eagerly awaited update. Cheers!

I'm not going to get my hopes up...
First they said late April - early May... then they changed it to mid May...
Now that mid May is here they prolonged it to late May...
I wonder what they'll say at the end of May... early June maybe...
No one ever keeps their word...
3 UK said they received the HTC Desire stock Gingerbread ROM back in March, this means HTC has the WWE ROM ready but they didn't released it until now, and who knows when they will... if ever. Not to mention the fact that the Desire will not receive the Sense 2.0/2.1 update together with the Gingerbread update. I mean, was that so hard, they had the time, and I'm completely sure that the Desire hardware supports it. But they just don't want to, it's all a marketing plan.
All the members of the Desire family should've got the Sense 2.1 update, but NO.
Now Google comes up saying they will somehow try to convince the phone manufacturers to update their devices in a timely manner, yeah right...
well.. agree with you.
the reason underlying why HTC hv not released gb for desire yet may be thinking of giving an advance to Desire-S, imo..

or the bugs still present in the rom, eg compass being broken on gingerbread
Who actually cares about the compass in all honesty?? I don't think I've ever used it except in Google Maps - which works fine
Compass is broken on many different devices (but maybe not on all devices of the same type), anyway without compass navigating is pretty tedious
Not only compass, but also GPS drivers, 2 sec answer delay fix, maybe better graphics libs.

Good to hear -
I guess desire is on its way out as a "cutting edge" device. Still pretty sure we'll get most of the new features via custom ROMs (i'm running baadnewz's sense 2.1/3.0 rom and it has lots of the "new" sense already...), but there's no point waiting for your carrier to release updates for a phone thats been in the market for well over a year. I'm with telstra (australia) and i rooted and got froyo running a good two months before telstra released it.

We’ve been told by HTC that the Desire HD and Desire will have Sense 2.1 and not 3.0, but the Sensation will have Sense 3.0.
maybe that's the reason it's late again - that they've decided to include sense 2.1 in it
To be honest, I can't see them putting sense 2.1 on desire, space is to precious, unless they implement some sort of a2sd+

HTC Annoucement related to 2.3 and Sense

They say that HTC Desire memory doesn't support Sense and 2.3. As usual, the smart guys around here proved that it does work
It doesn't have the memory for it, we know that. The Devs have proved it can run it but only using EXT partitions on the SD card which Google won't use as the average user won't know how to make one

"Our teams of engineers have worked hard in recent months to update the Gingerbread HTC HTC Desire without compromising Sense experience that you have grown accustomed to our phones. However, we are sorry but we must assume that there is enough memory to allow portability and storage Gingerbread experience on HTC HTC Sense Desire. We are very sorry for the disappointment that this news will cause many of you."
So... They say it will stick on froyo or update with old sense?

So its true ...
On a lighter note...
XDA Desire DEVS RULE, you know who you are snq-, NeoPhYte.x360, RCTeam, BaadNwz, CoolExe and anybody body else i cant think of now.
I would rather spend my money on you guys because you offer way better support.
Wow, that really sucks!

link for you.
thanks murdi
So HTC say that the phone can't run Gingerbread and Sense - but the leaked one did...?
so why not leave the old sense on and update the phone - or better yet - update it to the latest version of Froyo and fix the bugs with the HTC mail etc. so that it can work with Hotmail EAS...
little things would be nicer than squat... even though I'm not going to use it
Well, this is my first and last htc device.
I totally don't care... Sense UI sucks, CyanogenMod, MIUI & AdamG are the best
this is bull**** guys!!
the wildifre S has the same amount of memory and runs gingerbread and sense 2.1 and even with the 3.0 lockscreen!!!! their just as lazy as ****
I am so f.... mad right now, was waiting for this f.... gingerbread and now he wont come... I wont buy HTC phone anymore just becouse this tease. And I am going to tell all my friends not to buy any of their products anymore.

That's a shame - I do like HTC's phones and the only thing that let this phone down was the low internal memory situation, and their excuse for this too.
I'd buy another but i'd be a little cautious about it next time.
My Blackstone/Touch HD is still working very well, and that hasn't had any updates for ages but it looks like a NAND image may be coming soon for it which will spring some life into it again...
So the Desire is far from dead as the dev's here can perform miracles sometimes...
still plan on keeping my phone for the remainder of this year at least with the hopes that the custom roms keep me going!
Wow, a lot of fickle people on this forum...
Guys, we were never guaranteed updates from HTC at any point. The fact we got FroYo was because it was the top line device at the time. You can't compare the Wildfire S to the Desire. The Desire is over a year old, the Wildfire is less than a month old - of course it'll get a new version.

absolutely agreed! It's a shame...
I mentioned before that the Google I/O stated that manufacturers should put the latest version on phones if the hardware can cope - if that applies here then that is a great get-out-clause for not upgrading the desire..
although - we do know that HTC worked on it - see leaked rom.

... but don't forget; when desire came to the market (April 2010) it came with v2.1 eclair, then abt 4 months later, upgraded to 2.2 froyo whereas SE-X10 came with 1.6 (donut) almost at the same time with the desire and upgraded to eclair in November or December 2010, on the other side, Samsung Galaxy-S came with eclair in summer 2010, upgraded to froyo just two or three months ago (know that it will receive GB too soon).. shortly I cannot blame or judge HTC with that; when I decided to buy my Desire, it was the best choice to date (April 2010). Now the only way to root and step into the cooked rom world.
Cheers!
