I'm not going to get my hopes up...
First they said late April - early May... then they changed it to mid May...
Now that mid May is here they prolonged it to late May...
I wonder what they'll say at the end of May... early June maybe...
No one ever keeps their word...
3 UK said they received the HTC Desire stock Gingerbread ROM back in March, this means HTC has the WWE ROM ready but they didn't released it until now, and who knows when they will... if ever. Not to mention the fact that the Desire will not receive the Sense 2.0/2.1 update together with the Gingerbread update. I mean, was that so hard, they had the time, and I'm completely sure that the Desire hardware supports it. But they just don't want to, it's all a marketing plan.
All the members of the Desire family should've got the Sense 2.1 update, but NO.
Now Google comes up saying they will somehow try to convince the phone manufacturers to update their devices in a timely manner, yeah right...
well.. agree with you.
the reason underlying why HTC hv not released gb for desire yet may be thinking of giving an advance to Desire-S, imo..

or the bugs still present in the rom, eg compass being broken on gingerbread
Who actually cares about the compass in all honesty?? I don't think I've ever used it except in Google Maps - which works fine
Compass is broken on many different devices (but maybe not on all devices of the same type), anyway without compass navigating is pretty tedious
Not only compass, but also GPS drivers, 2 sec answer delay fix, maybe better graphics libs.
2 second delay is fixed in the Sense ROMs

Good to hear -
I guess desire is on its way out as a "cutting edge" device. Still pretty sure we'll get most of the new features via custom ROMs (i'm running baadnewz's sense 2.1/3.0 rom and it has lots of the "new" sense already...), but there's no point waiting for your carrier to release updates for a phone thats been in the market for well over a year. I'm with telstra (australia) and i rooted and got froyo running a good two months before telstra released it.

We’ve been told by HTC that the Desire HD and Desire will have Sense 2.1 and not 3.0, but the Sensation will have Sense 3.0.
maybe that's the reason it's late again - that they've decided to include sense 2.1 in it
To be honest, I can't see them putting sense 2.1 on desire, space is to precious, unless they implement some sort of a2sd+

I read a news from the following link

It says N1 will be updated to Android 2.2 on the Horizon, and what about the Desire?
i think it will but there will be a slight delay as HTC need to update Sense to work with 2.2 whereas the N1 has no overlays so can be updated as soon as the update is released

I wouldn't count on that.
HTC Hero used to be the top of the line before the Legend and the Desire came out. I think the Hero was launched in September, but until now the latest """Rumors""" say it will be updated to 2.1 in June.
Not to mention, android 1.5 on the Hero has limitations, which naturally should become a reason for updating, but yet, that wasn't good enough.
So worrying about it is just a waste of callories
But when the Desire gets rooted, we'll have plently of cooked 2.2, 2.5... etc Roms
If 2.2 is when their "Defragmentation Solving" thing comes into effect then probably yes.
Because in theory, HTC wouldn't have to do anything, sense and all the apps would happily run on top of 2.2 as separate apps.
They had better... Flash 10.1, DivX and 720p recording depend on it.

Still, it will take HTC alot of work to migrate to 2.2 in the first place. After which defragmentation concept can be applied.
Anyway, the complexity of it will be clear when that feature is out.

Flash 10.1 is definitley in FroYo. DivX and 720P recording was something HTC promised to be released in an update after the desire was launched so to me it makes sense that FroYo would be the update.
Look at it this way...HTC supposedly take such a long time because they build Sense to integrate tightly with the underlying OS. It's hooked in. The direction Google is taking is going to mean Sense is a separate self standing app/service...so HTC now have to re-write it probably from the ground up. That's not a trivial task if that's what this means.

You're right, all these are promised to be coming to the Desire, and Flash 10.1 is rumored to be coming to Nexus 1 with Froyo.
But that doesn't mean all these features require the update to Froyo, at least I hope so, or the Desire will have to wait for a long time.

I can't wait to root mine. Good thing is that it won't affect the warranty unlike the Nexus One.
I REALLY hope that the seperated update stuff will be here sooner than later. I am actually quite surprised since I got the Hero that it's not in Android to start with.
And it's the only way Google can avoid fragmentation, which imho is one of the biggest threat to the platform so far.
Warranty issue also depends on where you live. They can put in as much warranty void thingies in as they want. But when my phone has a hardware issue and they don't want to fix because I changed something in the software they will be in trouble. And then they can try and prove my software change damaged the hardware.
I thought it was the other way around?

Also, don't forget that HTC has access to early builds and source of future versions because they are building terminals based on it. Porting Sense is probably being done right now, they don't have to wait like we do.

Froyo update was done rather quickly (about 3 months) compared to previous phones. This happened because there was a commercial pressure to spread Flash on Android phones. Gingerbread doesn't offer any value added feature to Desire. We don't have front cameras, game controls, etc...
Hope they do it in three months but I don't believe it. Specially because of the new Sense.

Looks like Samsung beat HTC this time, Galaxy S in EU recieved Gingerbread update today.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/16/galaxy-s-gingerbread-update-now-rolling-out-across-europe/
For me this is another important point for decision between SGS2 and HTC Sensation.
bit disappointed that samsung beat htc to pushing out gingerbread, hoping to see the update come soon though, especially with the sign of the leaked gingerbread update
Typed on Motorola Xoom
gingerbread leaked for Desire
I cooked ROM and flashed a2sd works. Updated Radio its based on the old Sense with some tweak. Had old marker but was able to update Vending apk. Unfortunately, because don't post often unless I can contribute I'm considered a new member and am not allowed to post in the development area or upload files. I based by ROM on leedroid's previous roms as in my opinion he is one of the top 2 developers working on HTC Desire ROMs.
Anyhow, his version is set to be out tonight. Search the forum threads. Again not new sense but its gingerbread and its a begining.
Acc to Eurodroid "HTC Desire Android 2.3 update coming in the middle of May" at least for the Three/UK customers. anyway, it will -soon or later- come to all our Desires.
Personally, I will be keep waiting until my contract expiry date comes (~Apr 2012) with better feelings against HTC if I get this eagerly awaited update. Cheers!

They say that HTC Desire memory doesn't support Sense and 2.3. As usual, the smart guys around here proved that it does work
It doesn't have the memory for it, we know that. The Devs have proved it can run it but only using EXT partitions on the SD card which Google won't use as the average user won't know how to make one
Quote:
"Our teams of engineers have worked hard in recent months to update the Gingerbread HTC HTC Desire without compromising Sense experience that you have grown accustomed to our phones. However, we are sorry but we must assume that there is enough memory to allow portability and storage Gingerbread experience on HTC HTC Sense Desire. We are very sorry for the disappointment that this news will cause many of you."
So... They say it will stick on froyo or update with old sense?

So HTC say that the phone can't run Gingerbread and Sense - but the leaked one did...?
so why not leave the old sense on and update the phone - or better yet - update it to the latest version of Froyo and fix the bugs with the HTC mail etc. so that it can work with Hotmail EAS...

That's a shame - I do like HTC's phones and the only thing that let this phone down was the low internal memory situation, and their excuse for this too.
I'd buy another but i'd be a little cautious about it next time.
My Blackstone/Touch HD is still working very well, and that hasn't had any updates for ages but it looks like a NAND image may be coming soon for it which will spring some life into it again...
So the Desire is far from dead as the dev's here can perform miracles sometimes...
still plan on keeping my phone for the remainder of this year at least with the hopes that the custom roms keep me going!
Wow, a lot of fickle people on this forum...
Guys, we were never guaranteed updates from HTC at any point. The fact we got FroYo was because it was the top line device at the time. You can't compare the Wildfire S to the Desire. The Desire is over a year old, the Wildfire is less than a month old - of course it'll get a new version.

... but don't forget; when desire came to the market (April 2010) it came with v2.1 eclair, then abt 4 months later, upgraded to 2.2 froyo whereas SE-X10 came with 1.6 (donut) almost at the same time with the desire and upgraded to eclair in November or December 2010, on the other side, Samsung Galaxy-S came with eclair in summer 2010, upgraded to froyo just two or three months ago (know that it will receive GB too soon).. shortly I cannot blame or judge HTC with that; when I decided to buy my Desire, it was the best choice to date (April 2010). Now the only way to root and step into the cooked rom world.
Cheers!

if you want updates you need to go Nexus really.
Samsung are flavour of the month for the moment - but remember their FroYo release? It took about 3-4 months after HTC's release...
Failing that you just need to go AOSP with a custom rom - which you can do on almost any handset.
Perhaps you should address your goodbye to HTC directly

I love the my Desire, and pretty sure it is going to be the Android phone I would use for at least 1.5 years.
The main reason being there are so many Desire users, the ROMs just keep coming and getting better.
Like op i've moved from a desire to a sgs2 for many reasons, mainly my contract was up and I didn't like the lag on the sensation screen! But what gets me is how many people keep going on about custom roms for the desire. Of course there are loads the phone is old in tech year's, I'm sure the same will happen to the sgs2 in about 6 months, but to be honest I don't find much difference between the 2 apart from never having to think about how many applications I can have. Ie running out of memory! As they say you pay ya money and make ya choice.

True, but Samsung didn't promise Desire users Gingerbread and a new version of Sense and failed to deliver.
I got the Desire based on this, and know I feel they flipped the finger, so I can't really blame OP for ditching HTC.
I'm surprised google didn't have a word with them since google set out a baseline for all phone manufacturers that each handset should get at least 18 month's of updates? Therefore google is saying the max size each version of android is gonna be and the processing power requirements! It's like the htc wildfire this will never see gingerbread as it has the same if not less memory and power than the desire! Yet its a newer phone than the desire! Or is it google just doesn't care? And is letting phone manufacturers get away with it?

I love when people talk about companies "promising" something and then moan when it doesn't happen. Reminds me of the old days in the school playground...
From what I can see, HTC did thier best to deliver, but unfortunately the constraints of the device stopped them being able to do more. What do people expect them to do, come over and upgrade the memory in each phone?
Some people just want the moon on a stick.
Note to OP, it's 'so long' not 'good-bye'
