Hi all,
I've searched the internet for hours trying to find a solution to this problem but found only similar problems with icons disappearing, not whole apps, icons and all.
I got a new 32GB micro SD card moved all apps that could be moved to it. After reboot all links to those apps disappeared from home screen and from app drawer. Through application manager I was able to see the apps but when trying to move them back to the phone notification appeared that the application is missing.
Some moved applications will run before reboot, some won't but all will disappear after being moved to SD card and phone rebooted.
I tried resetting the phone and starting from scratch but the results were the same.
Does anyone have a work around or an idea?
Thanks.
This happens because the apps that disappear are on MicroSD. When booting the phone the launcher starts before the SD card is scanned. so the launcher doesn't sees the apps and thinks they are missing.
So what you have to do is the following, force close the launcher. you can do the following:
settings>Applications>Manage applications>all>SE Home > and press "Force stop"
this will relaunch the SE home and all the apps will be back
Thanks for a quick reply Comodoor but unfortunately restarting SE Home doesn't fix the issue for me. The apps are all gone. If I go back to application manager and have a look at apps installed on SD I can see an entry like: com.appspot.swisscodemonkey.appbrain taking up total of 32kb (which is kinda too little) and an option to move it to phone but then a notification: Failed to move application. The application does not exist.
Did you changed your SD card without copying everything? Because moving apps to SD card creates a folder where the apps are in. If you delete this folder all the apps will be gone.
In Linux and Mac don't see this folder because it's hidden for them. the folder is called ".android_secure" you have to copy this file to
Thank you commodoor for your help, the mystery seems to be solved for now. I tried my old 8gb card and it seems to be working fine. Obviously the new 32gb card is faulty.

Thanks a lot commodoor! this issue is annoying me. Never realized that the solution is so easy. Even the SE customer service personnel does not know how to solve this issue. Thanks again=)
ICS403 app disappear after a reboot
Hello all,
I want to reopen a discussion that I consider that is not well concluded or solved, and I don’t see any opinions in XDA, for a problem that I think many people already had in the pass, but because we have handy backups, we restore the things and no need to waste time discussing it.
For some time that I have been reading the problem of apps disappearing, after moving to sdcard followed by a reboot, and the fault always go to the user (forgot to copy something) or to the external sdcard, like the case discussed here in the first posts.
I see here a talk between commodoor, cech and leolion38, blaming a faulty 32gb sdcard, but I don’t understand why the blame, because when we press button <move to sdcard> in application manager, it moves to the USB storage app and not to the external sdcard.
Now going to actual facts, and respective problem:
- My phone details are Galaxy Note with ICS 403 rooted with CF5.6+CWM;
- Everything stable working correctly, any kind of problem;
- I have an external sdcard, but I didn’t moved anything to the external sdcard;
- I moved applications to the sdcard (internal USB) using button <move to SD card> in application manager;
- After I can see that in line “USB storage app” the amount increased from 0 Bytes to whatever Bytes;
Now the conclusion and respective problem:
When I make a phone reboot, the app disappeared and a grey shortcut appears in the place of the previous app shortcut, and in application manager tab “All”, I can see several grey icons beginning with com.whatever, corresponding to the app that disappeared.
This already happened to me in GB236, but I also blamed a cheap copy 32GB sdcard that I had bought in the market. I was an android beginner user and I thought that when we move the app to the sdcard, we were moving to the external and not to the USB (the sdcard was good and I putted it in the garbage, problem of not trusting in hardware copies) .
Can someone help me discover what causes this problem and how to solve it?
Thank you in advance.
Problem also happening moving applications using Titan Backup.
After restored the applications that were missing and before a reboot, I had to move applications again to the internal phone memory.
My opinion is that only the app installation is able to put/install itself in the sdcard, we cannot move it using application manager or other software, even if it says that app can be moved.
The final shot I gave was following the above idea of commodoor, making an FC to SE Home, because I didn’t find it, I made an FC to System UI, I think it’s the similar in ICS. Not worked and the grey icons continued there, I had to delete them.
One detail, if I press the grey icons android says that application is not installed in phone.
I think it’s needed some kind of app refresh in the system, because when I delete the grey icons, android asks me if I want to uninstall the application, of course I do that because if not, when I restore application that garbage continues there.

I continued my study around my problem, and I read some more XDA threads and I could not find a reason for the disappearance of the applications.
I suggest to the administrators of XDA if possible, maybe an impossible huge work, to compile in only one place all the threads about this subject, with the most important opinions, and in a common place because it happens in several different equipment.
Well the problem now! After erasing USB and the problem continuing, I decided for the Wipe/Factory reset making fingers, because I have the emmc problematic chip.
My congratulations to chainfire and CF56 because everything erased, phone restarted like new with normal questions, and after even the SuperUser was maintained with root. No doubt chainfire knows about development.
The problem was solved with wipe, only one time I had to shutdown phone for the app grey icon appears correctly.
But now other doubts came to me:
- Moving apps to sdcard they are going to the internal or to the external sdcard?
- What are the uses of all the partitions we have?
- We have in Galaxy Note 16GB internal memory, how it’s splited?
- Why USB storage not mixed with the 2GB phone memory?
- What is that Misc inside USB storage, and why all remaining space its affected to?
If someone knows how to answer this doubts, please explain them to me.
Thanks.

Finally solution found:
Uninstall Stericson permissions pro and Stericson Busybox, crap applications that damage everything, create mysterious crashes, loops, grey icons and applications stop working after phone reboot.
CH SGnote using XDA premium
Fast Boot option may be the culprit

I use Busybox by Stericson without any trouble. What follows may help.
CUT TO THE SOLUTION BELOW -- SEARCH FOR ////
Some (not all) of my apps moved to SD (all by Titanium Backup Pro) have begun to disappear and (sometimes) reappear without warning after I began to add and delete large Virtual Machines created in QEMU from my 16GB SanDisc class 10 microSD card on my HTC Droid Incredible running rooted stock Verizon Android Froyo 2.2.3. I know this thread is far from my phone's "home base", but from what I can tell this problem with disappearing apps located on an sdcard is NOT determined by hardware or even Android version.
I also happen to use LauncherPro by Federico Carnales instead of the built-in HTC Sense launcher. I noted elsewhere on XDA that a user had suggested that because at least some (maybe all) launchers start before the SD Card that this may be a problem, especially if changes are made to the sdcard that the launcher did not perform, or was not active during their performance by other apps such as Titanium Backup. That fits my situation, because I unmounted the SD, physically removed it to a PC, and added/deleted large VM files to save (lots) of time. No problems of this sort before I did this, so there must be some connection.
I noted that other users have tried reformatting SD, substituting different brands of SD, using newer/older SD etc. None of these reliably helped. So I skipped these options.
//// The (simple!) solution I tried that SEEMS to work (only time will tell!) is buried in the main Android Settings (accessed from the Menu button while in Home screen). Under "Applications" there is a setting "Fast Boot" that I checked long ago and forgot about (it seemed like a good thing to do at the time). The text warns "Turn off to use some Market apps" (that shows the age of my 2-yr old used phone and Android OS -- ohmygosh!-- because it refers to Market rather than Google Play Store!) Anyway, I unchecked the option and rebooted the phone.
Yes, it took a bit longer to boot (maybe a whole minute!), but after waiting about another minute ALL my home screen apps had normal icons and loaded properly. Titanium Backup Pro batch scenarios confirmed there were no apps in a forced uninstalled state (i.e. I had not done the deed, the system somehow had done it or at least rendered the apps "invisible" to Titanium, which decided they needed reinstallation).
The only odd behaviour was that auto brightness was turned off after I unchecked Fast Boot and rebooted. Going into Android Settings > Display and rechecking "auto brightness" took care of that. No other oddities or strange behaviours thus far (but it has only been about an hour).
I will report back here on this thread only (Samsung Fascinate > Fascinate Q&A > What just happend? apps on sdcard) if anything else requires reporting. Silence implies success!

(I am copying this post to other relevant threads, but will not post anything further elsewhere -- only there. This is a bit arbitrary (although this thread appears to be the most recent active one on this topic), but I hope this approach pleases the XDA sysops/admins)
...for what it's worth...
...for what it's worth, in my case...the SD card couldn't hack it...DEAD after 3-4 months. symptoms...phone kept on restarting, apps disappeared/wouldn't run(-that is ALL apps installed to the SD card). card could not be read in the P.C. only through usb card reader. btw...card was meant to be "for android phones", read and grey in colour, 32Gb...oh, similar thing happened to another 32gb card in my HD2, card lost Android OS, which it was booting from. ended up with just WM7.xxx . if i remember somewhere from back in the days, not a good idea to constantly use SD cards for os etc. i have been warned by myself!!
android apps moved to sd card disappear
settings>Applications>Manage applications>all>SE Home > and press "Force stop"
The above step Worked

Scuse me... i have the same problem with a rom in my samsung galaxy s2. i try to force stop "Touchwiz home" (i have touchwiz launcher) but the icons on my app drawer don't reappear.
I try to search fast boot but i don't find it...
how can i do? please help me
Phone has been working flawlessly the past couple days after I got my media messages working
Today I dragged some music onto my phone (not the SD card) and all my downloaded apps dissappeard. what the f??
Where did they go and WHY did they go? Really annoyed right now
Running the kingdom rewind rom btw
1) Try removing the songs you transfered. You might have it in a directory that they're not suppose to be in and it's messing up the apps.
2) Longshot, but maybe you deleted some app data by accident while transferring?
There's probably something else that you don't know about that is causing this, honestly I'm not sure but just suggesting the above.
already deleted the songs. all my apps were gone before i did this.
one thing i thought of just now. I did use the "low storage" app that came with rewind and didnt try any of my apps after that. moved em all to sd card and cleared cache. i think thats what did it

Try a complete reboot and see if they're there. I hit this occasionally when I connect my Incredible to the PC. When I disconnect, suddenly a handful of apps are gone. Fast reboot doesn't restore them, but complete power off and restart, or full reboot does.

Okay I've read a lot of threads about this already but not a single one had any solution for this. So I press the camera button in order to take a picture (my phone is locked btw), the camera app will start and when i try to snap a picture i get "error camera not available". I just set my phone to factory reset a few days ago. I don't have any custom rom or anything on it so Sony's own **** doesn't even work. Getting real tired of this.
I do not use an SD card or have an SD card inserted if thats some important information.
Could you try
Settings > apps > all > camera > clear data and clear cache > restart your phone
After boot loop issue with my LG G4 in February. It was replaced by the repair station without firmware and now with the firmware and Lollipop 5.1 installed with no updates available for Marshmallow.
Now I have noticed that camera crashes when selfie mode is used or front facing camera. This maybe the beginning of things going wrong again....
Can anyone recommend a fix. Phone is not rooted. And I don't want to use the very unstable Android 6. I bought this phone u locked via Amazon and unfortunately don't want to return it to them as LG has changed the serial number.
Totally stuck between a rock and a hard place as can't be without a phone for another 2 weeks.

Look for the camera app in the apps manager - all apps and try to clear cache. Test.
if that does not work, try clear data option above.
Test again...
had a similar problem with another device because i twiddle a setting. and lost the camera. The above fixed it. I learnt not to twiddle that setting again.
Hi, I had this issue and none of the software workaround worked for me. The issue is related to a defective hardware part, the power switch (B0181RDMM6). I replaced this and it fixed the issue. When this part is defective, it can hinder the call screen (meaning that when you dial or receive a call, the screen will not turn on for about 10 seconds) and it can also make the camera useless (meaning that the user will receive an error message on boot and when trying to use the camera. the error message is "unfortunately camera has stopped working". This is because the camera cannot work when the flash is used as a flashlight. It seems that when this part is defect, the phone thinks that flashlight is always on.
you can easily find the part on amazon at amazon.ca/s?k=B0181RDMM6&ref=nb_sb_noss
Unfortunately camera has stopped working Android error
Method 1: Restart phone
Well, this is a very straightforward step that could easily fix the camera has stopped error on your smartphone.
Method 2: Clear cache and data of your Camera application
Most of the time, the application cache may cause this error. To fix it, simply follow these steps:
Go to Settings >> Apps (or application manager) >> Swipe to go to “All”
Now scroll down the list of apps, and tap on “Camera”
Tap “Clear Cache” & “Clear Data”
Now restart your smartphone
Open the camera app and check for the error.
Method 3: Formatting external microSD card
This method is applicable only if you save your photos on your external microSD card. Simply remove the SDcard and move all of files stored on it to your hard drive. Then insert the microSD card in your PC or Laptop’s SDcard slot and format it. To format it, right click on the microSD card drive after it appears on your PC, then select “Format”. Before formatting , you can also try checking for error by right clicking your SDcard and selecting “Properties” >> Tools >> Check
I organized some picture folders on my SD card and now in Gallery the pictures from the moved/renamed folders show a grey thumbnail with an exclamation mark. The path they show for details is still pointing to the old location. I have tried force closing and clearing data/ cache for Gallery app as well as rebooting the phone and it hasn't updated. Any other ideas? There must be a media cache in some other app or service.
Try to clear the data from "Media storage" and if you use an SD card, then also clear data from "external storage". Both are found in Apps -> show system apps and look for them. Restart the phone. It shuld be cleared up.
Thanks! That did it!

Clearing "Media Storage" & "external Storage" is working/ doing what we are looking for, such as refreshing the pic in Gallery App.
Unfortunately after that, the Apps that had permission to write to the SD are broked:crying:
Always have to reactivate permission to SD for all the app!! Very suck by Samsung, for it Gallery main app to dont be able to refresh easily!!
Also is there a way to automate clearing Data of that 2 system Apps?? I tryed Tasker App, but there is no option for Data clearing...
Doing it manually everyday is very frustrating...
Do you do it manually or automate the procedure??
Thx in advance
Not sure if this is something Samsung-specific, as the problem of not seeing media files that were added manually is generic.
What worked for me (Android 13 on Pixel 7 Pro) is this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kotorimura.refreshmediastore&hl=en&gl=US&pli=1
After I ran it, my Gallery shows the files that I added manually to various folders.
