Hey guys, so I did a review for the Galaxy Nexus, you can find it here, and a small comparison to the Samsung Galaxy S2, you can watch the video here.
You can ask me questions and I'll try and reply as well as I can.
Also, check another review made by a colleague of mine, see his thread here.
Cheers,
Alex.
How did u get one already lol

Hmmm. Decent review. But I'm still waiting for a review for the final software and hardware. And you missed on a lot of things too.
Could you possibly make a short video demonstrating the notification light of the Nexus? Here are some things that you could include in it:
-Breathing rate
-Colours available
-Colours used for different applications (mail, messaging etc)
-Whether the notification light resumes after waking the phone up and not looking at the new notification?
Thanks.
tks for your review
is it the 2nd mic for noise cancelling in the top of the back?
How strong is Wifi signal compared to SGS2?

BIG QUESTION! Please answer this ...
Also which screen is better? does the plus make a difference?
Very nice review. Thanks for posting.
You said you were disappointed by the battery life, but earlier in the review you said it could last a day with intense use. Sounds pretty average to above average to me for todays android phone. What specifically disappointed you?

Colors available - so far I've noticed only white (for standard notifications - missed call, new message, new e-mail) and green (for certain apps - for instance, a new message on Facebook messenger will make it flash green) being used.
If you wake the phone up and then lock it again, no, the light won't flash anymore.
@peacekeeper05 - Thanks for the appreciation! If you have any suggestions, feel free to share It's my first review, so I'm kinda... experimenting. Suggesting new things that I might use in the next reviews will only help me
@veper & jameslfc - I'll get back to you on this tomorrow, I don't have my SGS 2 with me today, so I can't compare. Will try this tomorrow.
@rlsroufe - yes, the battery will stay up to one day of using . Given the fact that the display is bigger then the one on the S2, but the battery is also a bit bigger, I thought it will even and it will last at least the same as the S2... but the ICS drains it pretty fast. Hope that will be solved with an official update or with some custom kernels.
@royalsuen - I noticed that small "hole" at the top of the cover, but I'm not entirely sure what it is.
@jameslfc - check my colleague's review, he did a pretty good comparison for the displays. From my point of view, this one is better, even though it's not plus.
Could you please do comparison shots with the cameras? Same scene, same lighting, without playing around with the settings. I want to know which one does better out of the pocket. Plus, could you do the same with HD video capturing?
@qwer Yup, I'll do that tomorrow as well, hope I won't forget the S2 this time

@ankushkatari - nope. And no stopwatch / timer native either.
Damn... thats not good! I read that the TWL chip inside does have the radio feature. Hopefully the dev's can do something

Thanks mate, really appreciate this thread
Can't decide whether to upgrade :/ what is the maximum you would pay to "upgrade" from the sgs2 to the galaxy nexus, £50? £100?
I am asking this because I could sell my S2 and buy a nexus simfree
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Also would you mind photographing the contents of the nexus box, I see you mentioned the headphones but haven't shown them so this would be interesting
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Yup, that's pretty much what I'd pay. Wouldn't pay a huge amount of money, because the differences aren't worth that much... however, you could consider that the Nexus will bring a new display standard, resolution speaking, so... might not be bad to have that. And the fact that it's the first with ICS means that it'll be the first to receive any updates.
Regarding the box contents, sorry, can't help you there. I got mine in a nice, white box, not the retail package, along with a microusb cable, the socket adapter and the headphones. The headphones seem just like the ones on the S2, but I didn't try them, to be honest.
Would you like to sell it?

I received mine in the mail yesterday and wanted to give my mini review.
I currently have or had:
G1
G2
G2x
Sensation
Hercules
The reason I mention this is because this phone is not much nicer then the G2, G2x or the sensation but this phone is still solid.
I paid the outright price and coming from these phones I just cant see the difference for me to spend $560. This is just based on the feature and feel of the phone vs what I already own. If you were coming from a old phone by all means this is slightly better then the rest I mentioned but not $560 better.
Pros:
No pentile
No screen door effect (spaced pixels)
No Yellow Tint
No over colored greens and oranges
Fast web browser alive, I mean WOW! Flash sites run very well
NFC
Decent processor
Fastest download speed from Tmobile device yet
Very light
Nice feel in hand
Cons:
Defective screen (I had the pixelated, washed out /brushed steel stripes) the artifacts stay in the same place and is noticeable when I pull down the notification bar.
DPI is way to HIGH for such a resolution - Not bad but should be a option
Stutters 10% of the time
Car audio does not have the Voodoo punch from stock, not sure about later development or if a compatible chip is in there.
This phone did not blow me away but will offer it to my girlfriend over the sensation for the only reason being the GPS is terrible int he sensation and we use the navigation a lot and wanted to smash the sensation many times.
This phone is very close to being sent back but even if keeping this is being exchanged for a different screen.
Does any that bought from Tmobile have a perfect/good screen? If so please post pics.

This seems to be a pretty common, but then again we typically only hear from people who have this issue. I'm planning on heading back to the T-mobile store and compare my unit to their display models. Hopefully there will be a difference and convince an exchange.

Do you think it's a qc issue? Or is it a hardware (LCD or another issue that they all will have?) flaw?

This is my first Super AMOLED device so I'm not sure what to expect. I came from MyTouch4G before this and an SE x10i before that, and both fo them had LCD's iirc.
My friend has a Sprint GS2 and I got to compare them side by side. I noticed it's much less apparent on the Sprint one (Had to get up really close and carefully stare at it) so you almost cant tell, and when the brightness is up to about 30% it's just gone completely.
I tried to show him the lines I was talking about but he couldn't see them at all, and ended up calling me insane. So it's also the eye of the beholder.. so to speak. I don't have much evidence to go on other than what I'm seeing, and am fairly convinced it's hardware issue. I remember the MT4G had 2 different batch of screens where the viewing angles and vibrance was substantially different. This might be the same case, though I would expect more from "Super AMOLED Plus".

Based on the pictures someone posted, I find it unnerving that it's only one the right side of the screen.
It's almost as though it's hardware related in the sense that it has something to do with whatever is right beneath that part of the screen. Could it be heat related? The CPU being there? etc.
I don't remember seeing this on European GS2 when I played with it.
This is why even if the prime wasn't coming, I'd be hesitant to pick up the GS2 as the screen itself is a new line of manufacturing....and I'd rather let the first adopters deal with the imperfections while they work the kinks out in their manufacturing process.
I'm on my second SGS2 in two days. The first one was bad. Very bad. Defective screen: grey stripes, washed out colors. Extreme stuttering. Ok. Recieved my second one 3 hours ago. Great screen. Practically no stuttering.... until the first hard reboot. Bam! As bad as the first one except the screen. Laggy, choppy. Impossible to enjoy. Wtf????
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
I've noticed stuttering with the screen animations on. Once I turned them off, no problems. I've got the grey stripes, as well. If I keep my brightness around 50%, more or less, I don't really notice them. Debating on whether an exchange is in order.

just to be fair
Launcher Pro hasn't been performing well since Nexus S came out, and all the newer devices that came after it, like the original SGS2.
many other launchers are working way better/faster than Launcher Pro now
in other words Launcher Pro is kinda old school now, it needs to adapt to the new devices
Go Launcher EX. Same thing. Jumpy/choppy/laggy.

That launcher has and will be the worst launcher I've ever tried to date. My gs2 flies with the stock launcher and launcher 7. I haven't tried adw as I kinda like touch wiz.

I posted this in the other vertical lines thread, but I'll post it here as well:
dksxmks said:
I just came back from the T-mobile store and I'm happy to say that the exchanged device is much better in terms of the vertical lines. I'm fairly convinced that it's the nature of these AMOLED displays, only some seem to be worse than others. My old device was at ~40% brightness and it's still pretty clearly visible. Now with this new one, I can go down to ~20% without even noticing it unless I reeeeaaaally stare into it.
Make sure you test it beforehand though. I checked 2 of their display models and they both had that problem. I lucked out with the new one they handed me at random.

I really wish someone could post and show the lines you guys are seeing. I dont' see this on my screen at all. The little stuttering is very very little and I only see it slightly when pinch zooming on the homescreen. The HTC phones do the same exact thing. Nothing I would return over.

I like the first one. The music is great, text could be a little bigger though, and I think instead of tilting the phone you could make it twirl and then let it reappear with the new image.
thanks for your feedback! The GNex is a 2d image I spent hours looking for a 3dmodel of it but couldn't find one...google sketchup had one but it was really ugly.
Text is another problem I ran into ..I left a white bg on GNex and if I increased size or moved text it would get hidden behind the white. Thanks again though and if u have any friends you can get to click the links it would be greatly appreciated

The first one is better since it has some product info. With the second one, you have no clue as to what the app does.
With that said, the product info text does go by pretty quickly in the first one.
Pretty cool though.
Thanks for your feedback! Watching the second 1 would you say that you would be enticed to learn more about what techfit is? It was meant to be a viral video whereas the first was meant to be a promotional video. I extended each frame of text to the very end of each slide, do you have any suggestions on how I can make the text more readable without having features from previous slides show up on slides following them
I.e track your activity shouldn't show up on the in app purchases slide

Congrats mate
Only thing white specific I'm interested in is how easy cleaning the back of the phone is from hand oils, dirt, marks, etc. Someone on youtube shows a pen coming off okay, but don't worry, I won't ask you to test that
Hope the UK retailers get their act in gear and we aren't waiting till estimates like the 10th-12th for Phone.
here's a few things you can test mate, i'd appreciate the response:
- take a 720p and 1080p video and check what bitrate it's recorded at
- take some normal and HDR shots of the same thing and post them
- take a panorama (they supposedly increased the dimensions) and post it
- run a quadrant, antutu, stuff like that and post results
thanks!

Currently got my eyes stuck on the HTC One X at the moment (I'm from Perth, Australia).
Would be awesome if we could get a black/grey one here in Australia, but not a BIG problem (I just dislike anything glossy, to be honest, and the rim around the grey's camera is matte).
Anyway, will see what SGS3 has to offer before I pick between that and the HTC One X.
Looking VERY promising and I'm really excited!

That's cool, I'm not a fanboy for any manufacturer or device & don't disregard anyone's opinion.
but SGS2 is still Samsung's flagship device, ICS is its first update to a new android & I cannot believe how poor ICS is for this device.
The design is very poor, it feels nothing like ICS.
It's really laggy & slow compared to the excellent gingerbread rom that samsung developed.
It completely ruined my confidence in Samsung's software development team & forced me to go elsewhere - maybe in the future samsung will improve its software, but for now - i want a change.
Never owned an HTC device before, never used sense & never owned a white phone before, so this is gonna feel completely fresh & new to me - excited!
I predict the sgs3 would have the same 'feel' as SGS2 but faster with better specs, & its this feel I wanted a change from. (not because it's a bad feeling, but I certainly want to feel like I have a new phone, a new experience & new software)
Good luck with your decision making

Definitely! I'm basically just looking at what both has to offer rather than sort of risk jumping into the HTC One X pool then having to come out again when the SGS3 is significantly better.
In other words, I'm looking at which has better features for me personally, since I assume they'll both be in the same price range anyway.

@mushweed
I also asked this in the YT comments, but could you maybe compare the resolution of a picture taken while recording and one taken while playing the same recorded video?
You say in the video the speaker is not very loud but is it louder than classic HTC phones including Sensation? How do you compare the loudspeaker to other devices?
Can you please try the screen under sunlight?
Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum neuen Handy!
@mushweed : Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum neuen Handy! Thanks so very much for the insightful video's unboxing the One X, the quick review of the browser & for comparing the One X with the Gnote & the Galaxy SL-Very apt comparison indeed! In the second video, you mentioned that you were facing issues with the Wifi & you were referring to an update-is this specific to the One X or were you facing challenges with the Wifi connection @ home in general?
I would be extremely grateful if you could kindly check on the following for me:
1. What is the default mp size of the phone saved while recording video's and can one change it via settings for a 8mp shot?
2. After reading the warranty terms & conditions, what does it say about repairs/replacement of the Once X during the warranty period? Do you see anyway that the handset could be opened for repairs?? You did mention in the video there was no space between the screen and the body while describing how the screen curves over the rest of the body, so I guess the chances of repairs by opening the handset are near to none!
3.Also, can you please upload a copy of the warranty terms & conditions-I've been wanting to pre-order this device but have held back due to the unibody design & I can't help but wonder about HTC's SOP regarding repairs & replacement for the One X during warranty and the "non-repairable" post warranty dilemma to avoid owning an expensive paper weight in case the hardware does need help after the warranty is exhausted. I would be highly obliged if you could check with your local HTC Customer Service desk about the same as the tech support in my country have no clue about it yet!
4. About the scree-in your opinion, especially after playing around with the screen encased in Gorilla glass(2), do you feel the need for covering it with a screen-guard? (I 'm aware there's a separate thread on this forum raising this question but I found it apt & convenient to ask mushweed here instead, along with my other queries)
5. Can you also compare the GPS capabilities of the One X in comparison to the Gnote. Does the One X support GLONASS like the Gnote?
I'm looking forward to more video reviews from you and hope that you will also showcase the loud speaker quality of the One X & how the beats equalizer setting makes a difference to the default sound on the speaker & on the default headphones. I also await your feedback about USB OTG function, as inquired by other members and your feedback about battery life.
Vielen Danke.. Schuß!
Will answer all your qestions as soon as the OTG and HDMI Cable arrived !!
Truly excellent videos, you've done great work here.
The multitouch thing is very strange - my only guess is that the software is limiting the touch events to two. For some reason. Since three finger swipe works. Maybe BECAUSE they don't want you to accidentally launch the HD Media Link? I don't know.
Definitely curious as to what would happen in an ASOP rom...
i've got around 700+ records with mp3 and flac copies of all of them on my computer. the flac files take more than 26 GB, but i have found that i am not happy with smartphone music quality. i don't believe beats audio eq will fix that, so i'm ready to carry both a phone and music player. the only thing that will take up a lot of space on the phone for me will be 1080p videos of concerts/DJs. if i was at a 3 day festival, then it's possible i would run out of space. i can't use the dropbox feature because i have a 2 GB limit on ATT. thanks for the videos! i don't know what color i want, but i have almost 2 weeks to decide.

I also asked this in the YT comments, but could you maybe compare the resolution of a picture taken while recording and one taken while playing the same recorded video?

this isn't what you asked, but i heard a rep in a video say it was 8mp standalone and 5mp from a video.
So a while back I was using the HTC One S. I got it for the camera. I prefer samsung, for the most part, and have gone from a vibrant to galaxy s 4g to galaxy s 2. The only reason I did not go to the galaxy s 3 originally was because I needed a better camera. I wound up having to sell my HTC One s for some cash, and now I have the change to get a phone again, I am stuck, once again, between the one s and the s3. Personally, I would like to wait for the note 2, but I don't have the time. I am stuck with a basic flip phone right now, and while i don't mind using a flip phone, I have to have something for tethering with my tablet while I am work. So that is the rock and a hard place. Any phone I buy is going to be a few hundred bucks anyways, so I would rather go another hundred or two more and get the one s or s3.
Personally, the One S was great with the Axiom ROM. The battery lasted forever, and it had great extra features.
However, the s3 is still my preferred choice because of the bigger screen, the 720p, svoice, voice actions, and many other things. Not to mention the extra compatibility with my note 10.1 tablet.
My only real issue here, admidst all my rambling, is the camera. I know the HTC One S has an f/2.0 aperture, and the s3 has a f/2..6 aperture which makes a difference (although some people report the aperture as f/2.4)...my concern is how people actually like the photos and video. Ive noticed some washed out looks compared to the one s. I know the f/2.6 will give better depth vs the f/2.0, but thats about the end of the benefits.
My main concern is quality of photos/videos, and quickness of the picture. I have two young boys and I want to be able to snap a photo that is clear and of good quality, at a moments notice without having to worry about missing it or getting a blurry shot.
Any comments or thoughts on this would be helpful.

If the cam is your main concern, I think you will be happy either way. There may be a difference side by side but if you're not ccomparing the two like that you probably wouldn't care either way.
While some may have had issues with the camera I would say the vast majority have not.
There are a number of things that could cause pic problems here. Lots of people are running jb leaked firmware. Lots are using the cam from the note2. I seem to remember a few had problems fixed by updating the cam firmware...
But like I said, I doubt you'd be dissatisfied with the gs3. I dont know how theyd compare side by side but unless you're doing just that I dont think you'd notice or care.

Ive seen plenty of camera shot examples, but pretty much all (most, but not all) are from still photos are "posed" shots. It takes good pictures, and I think my only issue is its a little washed out vs the One S. However, I can deal with that. My biggest question is lag from button press to picture taken.
So, how much lag is there in taking a picture? If I wanted to take a picture right when somewhat hit the water diving off a diving board, or of my cat jumping from fence pole to fence pole and wanted a shot right in the middle between two poles, etc....how easy would it be? With the One S I could get pretty much zero lag. if I hit the capture button its taken the picture right then, and I can click the capture button over and over and over in rapid succession (not burst mode) and take multiple pictures. I really want the GS3 over the One S for other reasons, but need the camera to be on the same level.
So how quick does it take a picture when the button is pressed?...and how quickly does it recover to take another picture?
I find it to be quite quick on all accounts. Hasn't caused me any issues as of yet. Also, there is a feature where you can just record video and then capture the pics you want from the video.
Have you seen the commercial with the hikers and the goat?
The only complaint I have about the camera is the lack of hardware buttons for it. But I can deal with that.

Thanks for the feedback.
Its rather important to be quick on the camera trigger. Even with the zero lag of the One S I did miss some things. I have my two boys and they can be making a face or doing a little dance to their favorite tv show and I want to capture it, but the moment may just last a few seconds, and I need a quick trigger finger. So I dont want to have to focus and then 'click'. I want to hit and click at the same time.
Right now, however, I am stuck my an LG Mytouch Q and definitely not the best in the camera department. lol
Yeah I hear you on wanting to be able to get that quick shot. Its the msin reason I miss the csm button. But theres also a motion setting where you tap and hold on lock screen whil rotating to landscape takes you straight to the camera. I just added to my lockscreen shortcuts. Auto focus is pretty good too btw.
Dont forget you can always get the S3 and try it for 14 days. If it doesn't meet your needs return it and get the One S.

Thats where my problem lies. I work for T-Mobile. Mind you everything I do here is personal and not affiliated with my tmobile employment, but I work for them, and I know just about everything there is to know about the phones, but because I have not had a chance to really test shutter lag on the phone, I dont know if it meets my needs. I am VERY picky. I don't work in a retail store or anything so I dont deal with the phones in my hand daily.
...and because I work for the company, I do not get a buyers remorse period on my purchases. Once I order it, give or take a couple of exceptions to the rule, its mine. So while I can tell you about every wifi share options, every motion and voice control, and so on, I dont know for sure if the camera lag will be a problem in practical use because I do not have the phone physically with me. ..and when I did have the phone physically with me...I never tested it cause I either had my one s or was not in the mindset of having to buy a phone lol. I will probably get a chance to check out a demo model tomorrow when I head in to work, but I was trying to get it ordered over the weekend, so it would start processing my order. Our order system is different and the sooner the better.

IMHO the Galaxy S3 takes the best pics I have ever taken with a phone. See for yourself. I am attaching two pics of a sunset/day-time at Vanderbilt Beach, Florida. Rarely have I been disappointed with the quality of the pics. At least for me, they almost always turn out perfect. I highly recommend the Galaxy S3. Even in low-light situations, you still get a great pic.
Well 1) it's a camera phone and 2) ymmv. There isn't more "lag" than a cheap point and shoot but this isn't a dslr, it's a phone. It's going to come down to to you and each unique situation.
