[REF] Samsung Galaxy Nexus Preview and Comparison! - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi, guys
I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus! Feel free to ask! I have made a preview here: http://samsungmobilers.ro/post.php?id=126 in order to get a fast answer leave a comment on the given site!
I have also made a Display comparison between the Galaxy s II vs Nexus!

Cool. Thanks.

Nice, ... if you have Nexus S ... please make just one size comparison
Thanks.

Screen looks amazing. Puts the SGS2 to shame big time. Whites and blacks look great. Doesn't look over saturated either. Big plus.

How is the overall speed and responsiveness? And smoothness? Is the hardware acceleration noticeable? Thanks for any info.

Have you done a Quadrant Standard Test?? How are these benchmark tests compared to the GS2???

What about screen visibility in sunlight? I heard that Super AMOLED Plus in SGS2 is not that good in direct sunlight, unlike Pen Tile Super AMOLEDs. Now, given GN has the "old" Super AMOLED, is it better?

...
please everyone post these questions on the given links! i'm goint to answer you as fast as possibel! thx in advance

wouldnt this forum be more helpful with the whole questions thing? i looked thru the whole site and couldnt find any Q&A for any of ur posts

Is the notification led multicolor or just orange/green? Can the user assign different colors for each type of notification?

Can you go more in-depth with the color rendering between the two? From what I've seen with the Galaxy Nexus, the phone seems to be less oversaturated and more subdued compared to the SII. Is this true? Can you also compare the whites on webpages and tell me if you think the nexus is less blue compared to the S II? Thanks for sharing!

Please take some low-light/night photos and videos with both the Nexus and SGS2 to see how they compare. Upload the original untouched photos/videos for us to examine.

Looks like the pentile screen may have reached an acceptable level. It still has hatching on solid colors over black, as demonstrated in a few other reviews, but otherwise it's looking acceptable to even staunch pentile haters like myself.

speed
It's fast as hell and also very responsive and this is only the start cuz there are a few compatibilty bugs with the apps. The final version of the ICS will blow!

Made one quadrant test but the results are incredibly low, i suppose that the app is not optimized for the 4.0!

Might need to rephrase that.

Does it have a noise cancellation mic? What is that small notch on top of the battery cover?

If you can break that one big long paragraph into a few smaller paragraphs, that would be much easier to read... Seeing that big chunk of texts makes me want to skip it

[INFO] For those worried about the camera....SII vs Nexus!

I've seen a lot of people complain about the camera on the Galaxy Nexus, people that had hoped the megapixels were higher like the SII. Well, to help put your worries to rest, check out all the pictures I took comparing the Nexus with the SII:

Is that a response to the OP...he doesn't claim that they do. article even states "the question that should come into your mind is, which camera has better optics, not which camera has more Megapixels."

Good work!
Looks like the S2 gives more vibrant pictures but a bit unrealistic, seems it has more contrast too. Probably software related.
I think the Galaxy Nexus definitely focuses better from those shots (especially in macro mode) but perhaps isn't as good in low light, definitely more noisy and a bit more detail from the S2. Looks like some of that reason is that Nexus is choosing a higher ISO rating than the S2 in low light, meaning you can see more at the expense of noise.
Well one thing is clear, the SG II has a better camera (apart from night time shots).
Disappointing but oh well, I just wish my damn GN would turn up!

The galaxy s2 DO take panoramic pics out of the box. Please update your conclusion.
Based on the pics, my OPINION is that the galaxy s2 takes better pics in most conditions. However come night time and low light, the galaxy nexus takes better pics

When the photos are viewed at the max size you can see that the SG2 has the much better camera. It's not even close, fantastic pics by the way op. Makes it extremely easy to see which phone takes better photos. That said the nexus would still be my choice since I own a DSLR and don't care for taking photos with my phone.
The photo of the fruits are day and night, complete difference on GSII. The majority of the pics looked better on GSII.
Its like having the NexusOne camera all over again.

No it was a statement that everyone needs drilled into them.
I looked at the article on my phone but it didnt format the names properly so I don't know which column was which phone.
I would have said the left hand column took the better photos purely because they had more colour
EDIT: Looks like the GSII wins. Nothing a bit of photoshop cant fix if your that bothered though lol

The pictures were taken in London.
the GSII pictures have slightly better colors, but that seems to be the only advantage.
stop kidding yourself guys! there's no way the nexus has the better camera
in all the daylight pics, the SII is sharper, more realistic in colour, and much more like a real digicam...the nexus doesn't seem to be able to focus, the edges in the images are mainly quite blurry (could be a result of the quick shutter)
that aside, it does do much better at taking night shots!
Thanks OP for the comparison shots!

I completely agree that the colours on the SII look better, but the thing is, it looks better than real life. It's vibrant but too vibrant compared to the subject as it was at the time.
Looks like the classic "oversaturated colors" problem when doing comparisons is rearing its head in this thread.
That is, inaccurate but oversaturated colors looks better compared to a more accurate color image.

Opinions and thoughts on the screen?

So I'm wondering if the screen on the phone is actually nice? I've read mixed reviews but I'm just wondering if its exaggerated or if the screen is actually nice. How would current owners of the device rate it? Is it on par with the retina display? Are pixels actually noticeable? Any info would greatly be appreciated, thanks.

I have spent around an hour with it and screen is CRAP compared to iPhone 4. Very very dark even on max brightness and AUTO off. There is no white shade, just grey. If you look closer, you can see individual pixels even they call it HD screen. Very dissapointed, such an amazing design with fresh Android, but terrible screen. Not even SAMLOED+.
iPhone 4 screen is unbeatable.
Really? In a way this wouldn't surprise me, though. My 4 and 4S have always been crisper than the other phones I see. I would've hoped the GN would be better though.
Can you comfortably load a desktop web page and see all the text without zooming?
wow. That sounds absolutely terrible. A nightmare. No white shade, just grey. wow. Just canceled order. Thanks for that.
the screen is brilliant, i love it.
Oh really, huh?
Funny, since usually people complain that AMOLED screens are too ****ing bright.
Crank the brightness up a bit and the GN is a decent screen, certainly better than my NS. Now I also have an iPhone 4s (work made me do it!) and I'd say the colours are a little more realistic on the iPhone. In the end the screen size is of greater benefit to me and fairly soon
Supercurio will have worked his voodoo magic and we will be able to choose whatever colour temperature we want.
Edit... the screen isn't dull in comparison with the iPhone, that's complete crap (sorry). And there are no pixels when zooming in on web pages.

Take iPhone 4 and put next to Samsung(max brightness) and you will see HOW dark is sammy`s display and how "white" is white colour - just terrible. Samsung should have used some really premium display in their flagship superphone instead of this crap. I`m so used to superbright retina screen, looking at sammy`s screen felt like its $50 phone.

All of you who are saying GN screen is woow/amazing - you haven`t seen iPhone 4 screen. Put both side to side and you`ll see yourself. If you had $20 Nokia, then of course it will be "mind blowing" screen for you.

IMHO the screen is fantastic. Side by side with the GS2 it blows it out of the water. Sharper, clearer AND bigger. The GS2 looks distinctly low res.
Sure the iphone screen is pretty but its tiny.
Im sure people will disagree with me but thats the great thing about opinions
Can anyone do a side by side screen comparison and post pictures?

++++, but it doesn`t make GN screen WOOOW or AMAZING.
I had so much hope for GN screen, now its out and I`m struggling to make a decision, but I need larger screen.
It's not really surprising that the iPhone has a "better"screen. It uses a high density IPS panel. IPS is well known for its superior brightness, color accuracy, and viewing angles. There's a reason IPS monitors are so wildly popular in photo/graphic editing fields.
Some will disagree because of their ridiculous iPhone animosity, but they don't really matter.
That said, the GSII screen (the SAMOLED+) is not "junk". Anyone who says otherwise is a fool.

Just google/youtube, quite few. But it doesn`t reflect real life situation because its recorded by camera and it does change colours etc. Go to mobile phone shop, take both and put side by side.
That's funny, I've owned every iPhone iteration except for this latest (4S) and I currently own a Galaxy S II. I took my S II to my friend, who imported a Galaxy Nexus, and is replacing his iPhone 4S (doesn't like it). We cranked the brightness to max on all 3 devices, and then to minimum on all 3.
The Galaxy Nexus had, arguably, the best screen of the bunch. We asked multiple people (5 or 6 of our friends were over) and they all agreed. Watching videos and looking at pictures shows a *WORLD* of difference. The screen on the iPhone is brilliant, but compared to the size and resolution of the Galaxy Nexus...you're kidding yourself if you think it's crap.
Disclaimer: The whites *are* more pure white on the iPhone, and the colors are more true to life; however, that's a common difference betwixt SUPERAMOLED screens and the screen in the iPhone. Some people prefer the higher contrast and color saturation in the AMOLED screens...and I'm starting to agree. After owning every iPhone I used to love them, but now I'm blown away every time I turn on my phone because of the way the colors pop.
Your opinion might be that the screen on the iPhone is better...but to say that the screen on the Galaxy Nexus is crap kind of tells me you've either never seen it in the same conditions as the iPhone or you're expressing your opinion through exaggeration.

Yes I have. I owned an iPhone 4 before this phone. I prefer the blacks and colours on the GN - much deeper blacks, much more vivid colours.
Whites/light greys, however, are a different story. On high brightness the GN wins, but anything lower and yes, they're grainy, bandy and greyey. Very poor, but I believe it's a symtom of Pentile displays unfortunately.
Those blacks though. Those blacks!

Seriously thinking about getting rid of the Nexus for a Galaxy s2 skyrocket

Well, I saw a skyrocket today for the first time, and noticed a few things:
1. The skyrocket's camera just destroys the nexus camera, no contest. It makes the nexus photos look like they came from a flip phone.
2. The browser is way smoother than the nexus' browser...what? Since when did the galaxy s2 get hardware acceleration?
3. The screen....ok seriously, what the hell? The colors just POP on the skyrocket and almost make the nexus colors look washed out. I thought they were the same exact screens, but the nexus having a higher resolution.
What do you guys think? Hmmm.
1. I agree. The camera of the Galaxy Nexus could be better, but it's not a deal breaker for me.
2. I would wait for 4.0.3 and see what it brings to the Galaxy Nexus.
3. I thought Google purposely lower the saturation to make the colors look more realistic.
So in conclusion, I would wait until we see what improvements are found in 4.0.3 before giving up on the Nexus.
What improvements are 4.0.3 supposed to bring?
http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/16/android-4-0-3-announced-brings-variety-of-optimizations-and-bu/
There's hope still!
Thank god for 4.0.3! I totally agree with OP. Camera is a huge deal to me and coming from the 4S, I was really saddened by the GNex quality. Only thing keeping me on this phone honestly is the buggy ICS I feel has a ton of potential and awaiting Google's updates.
To be quite honest, if the SGII SR had ICS, I would've gotten that initially. I had such high hopes for the Nexus line and this phone is quite disappointing, but I have faith in ICS and that it will take out Apple.
The inferior camera quality problem has something to do with the near zero lag camera the GN has. They probably had to chose one or the other.

There's nothing wrong with the camera if you actually click the screen to focus before shooting. Rapid fire/no focus shots are just that and serve a definite purpose, but people seem to expect maximum quality as well.
There's a reason the Skyrocket has shutter lag. If you want to compare picture quality, focus with both devices. You'd be surprised how they match up.

Oh I agree, I have no problem whatsoever with the GN camera. Takes great pictures IMO. I haven't actually compared them so I didn't want to say either was better or worse. Just a theory as to a possible difference in hardware selection by Samsung/Google if there was a large difference in pic quality like so many seem to claim.
Its funny that I have both phones. Not the sky rocket but the original SGS II unlocked. Both phones are on AT&T.
In all reviews everybody seems to like the camera on SGS II, in my experience I have yet to take a single good photo with it. I am not talking about outdoors with nice natural light. In that light even iPhone 3G took some good photos too. I am talking about indoors with incandescent light. Photos are either too yellow or too dark with no available options in settings to cure this. My wife hates that camera. In fact indoors I like SGN camera alot better as the photos are not too yellow or dark. Grainy with noise, yes but atleast you can see them. SGS II are grainy too but very dark and yellowish on top of being noisy.
SGS II browser is hardware accelerated. I know that because all ported ROMs from SGS II for Captivate always had this note in description. Plus I can see it on the phone too. scrolling is smooth plus switching between tabs is smooth with cool animation. SGN browser is smooth too. I don't know why you have any problems with it. I am running 4.0.3 with franco.kernel and no force GPU turned on its still super smooth. Even the Nova launcher is buttery smooth (specially scolling the dock with 3-docks enabled).
Screen on SGN is washed out as compared to SGS II but do yourself a favor and take a look at a portrait on both phones and you will understand why google didn't choose highly saturated screen like SGS II. Skin color on SGS II is way off and almost to the point that it looks brownish. Not cool.
In the end I can tell you this, get what you like the most. Doesn't matter what myself and other say ... however keep this in mind that even when ICS hits SGS II it would still have TouchWiz and if that's okay with you then by all means go with Sky Rocket.

I think this doesn't get enough attention. After using a Fascinate for awhile, I noticed the color saturation is "better" than the GN's, but everything had a noticeable blue tint. Whites are not white, but rather a very light teal. Inaccurate color reproduction is a common complaint on Fascinate forums.
I'd gladly trade the extra "pop" for truly white whites.

Better? Hope you don't calibrate monitors/screens/tv for a living. Gs2 has very unrealistic colors. And deep blacks is what makes the pop and contrast. Not white, contrary to an very untrue belief as shown with all the tv and monitors in showroom mode at the store to "dazzle" would be buyers. The nexus is by far the best screen with color reproduction, deep blacks and not quite white but warm white is better than a cool white. Take away the 720p and the screen is still awesome.

The best thing they ever did to the nexus s was correct the color saturation. I think it was in 2.3.3 or 2.3.4. It was funny watching everyone complain that it looked yellow when it was just everyone was so used to looking at took much blue.

The GN is a new phone running a new operating system, it will take a few updates before this phone even begins to show the refinement that it's capable of, we need to have some patients. A camera with 5 megapixels is plenty for a phone camera, even a dedicated P/S camera, so please don't get into megapixel wars...it is a pan that doesn't hold water.
The GN is a really good phone now, but I believe it will evolve nicely with updates just like my Nexus One previously did. In addition to the official updates, the XDA community is firmly behind this phone already. Enjoy your GN.

The galaxy s2 has always had hardware acceleration in the browser. In fact the original galaxy s had hardware acceleration in the browser too. Was the first Android phone with hardware acceleration actually.
Are you running the Nexus on At&t? So you paid full price for the phone?
I do think the Nexus hardware is nothing special, but honestly the main purpose of getting this phone, at least with my reasoning, is guaranteed Android updates. I just wish Google would beef up their specs on their Nexus line, they always seem to be behind the curve.
I say if you paid full price the Nexus on At&t then it isn't worth it, return it. If you didn't pay full price and you switched to Verizon and got it subsidized then keep it.
By the time Samsung updates the Skyrocket to ICS, Google will have already come out with Android 6.0. Also expect one update from Samsung to ICS, and no updates EVER AGAIN. You will probably get ICS 4.0.3 and will never even get any incremental updates that are key to security and performance.
Samsung just sucks like that. Wish Google had chosen someone else to make the newest Nexus. Hopefully next year Motorola!

1. Maybe they camera is better on the skyrocket, but you probably just forgot to focus properly on the Galaxy Nexus, I'm very satisfied with the Galaxy Nexus camera.
2. I have never tried a browser as smooth as the Galaxy Nexus one, 4.0.3 makes the phone fly, 4.0.1 lags.
3. As the other guy said, it's to make it more realistic.
There are already color mods implemented in kernels, so no problem.
It uses the same processor as the Sensation XE, and.. well... that thing sucks badly, one of it's problems is driving high resolution screens, and 720p is pretty high...

Yeah, I got a chance to play around with the Fascinate for a couple hours (a friend's phone) and compare it to the GN. He's tech-illiterate, so the phone is definitely bone stock.
Never handled the Skyrocket, but the OEM Fassy definitely has blue all over. Reds look maroon, greens look aquamarine, yellows look green.
People, we are talking about a phone camera. Most people are not going to hang out 6 months for an update to make the nexus functional. By then this phone will be history. And good riddance. I am back to an ATRIX 2, and it is a better phone in every way shape and form than the nexus.

[Q] Is this phone suitable for reading books?

I often use my One X reading books while at the gym. And this works wonderfully on the SLCD screen. What about the note 2? Thanks
I had the one x and the note 2 is much better. I used to get the flickering screen on my hox which really taxes the eye. I have made mine white writing black background and it saves the battery.
Size wize its much better to read from. And there really isn't much noticeable weight difference.

its much much better as text on screen is around ~50% more
I guess not really talking about size as such more more on the quality of the text. but thanks to you both

QUality of the text is fine. I have both the HOX and Note II at the moment.
The HOX is noticably sharper especially with certain fonts like segoe light, but the note II is still very good and sharpness wise, after a while there is no real difference with everyday use.
I don't think it suitable for reading as the screen isn't big enough. what i say is 10.1

That's for news papers!!! LOL!!!
Cheers!!!!
If you can read a book while at the gym, you are not working hard enough!

Screen quality

Anyone else find the screen to be lacking sharpness?
I'm coming from a gs5, and this phone doesn't seem as crisp with text as well as images.
Went to best buy tonight and looked at the 3 they had on display and they all looked the same.
I also think the colors are muted compared to the gs5, but I'm not sure if that is a bad thing or not.

the colors "seem muted" to you coming from a gs5 because the gs5 colors are saturated. the note 4's colors are more closer to the right color spectrum than any amoled display has ever been. the note 4's colors are more natural, more realistic.

Thank you, I do understand that. But it still doesn't explain why the screen seems blurry compared to the gs5.
It's almost as if everything the extra resolution is causing it. If I look at a very high resolution picture, it appear to look fine, but then everything else seems slightly off.

I thought I was the only one. I got my Note 4 yesterday and of course I didn't take my eyes off of it for a good hour or so and I thought it was in my head that my vision was blurry. After reading that the phone may not get root and the display disappointment, I'm strongly considering taking it back and keeping my S5.

Several threads here in the General section. For AT&T phones, anyway.

If you compared it to a GS5 you wouldn't think the same. GS5 screen is best I've ever used.
Have you tried changing the screen mode options?

Yeah, doesn't do anything except change the colors slightly. The more I'm using the phone the more I get used to it. I really hated the S5, so I'm not going back to it(the bluetooth wouldn't work properly with my car).

My S5 is right next to me displaying the same images and text and I have to disagree with you. Everything is just as sharp or sharper on my Note 4 screen.

This.
At the PPI we're talking about for all three phones (Note 3, SGS5, Note 4) unless you have better than 20/20 vision and/or are holding the device less than 10" away differences in sharpness wouldn't be detectable. Difference in display quality yes. It's about visual acuity which is the lowest common denominator.
As for the Note 4<>Note 3, the display seems "better." What better means to me (which is purely subjective) is it's brighter on the same setting I previously used, it seems crisper, and the colors seem more realistic.

Subjectively, based on your tastes, sure, why not. Objectively, not so much...
Our detailed Lab tests show that there have been significant display performance improvements in the new Note models [4 & Edge] including higher resolution, higher absolute color accuracy with better calibration, higher peak brightness with improved screen visibility and readability in high ambient light, and higher display power efficiency, resulting in a number of new records for Smartphone display performance.
What is particularly significant and impressive is that Samsung has been systematically improving OLED display performance twice a year with each Galaxy generation since 2010. With the Galaxy Note 4 there are many significant improvements over the Galaxy Note 3 that we tested a year ago, but also with the Galaxy S5 that we tested in March, and Galaxy Tab S that we tested in June. The most impressive improvements for the Galaxy Note 4 are in the pixels per inch and resolution, the Absolute Color Accuracy, Peak Brightness and screen viewability in High Ambient Light, and display Power Efficiency, which we discuss in turn below.

Here is a side by side. Maybe it's just because everything is bigger that it looks slightly blurry to me.
Not sure how good this will look.

The only thing that matters is how you think it looks. Like so many subjective things discussed on XDA (lag, battery life, overheating, build quality, AOSP vs. overlay) if you're looking for consensus it ain't gonna happen.

I was referring to how the picture came out.
Edit, because it was taken with a crappy iPhone 6.
On my screen some apps makes the whole screen color go 10shades higher, if you catch my drift. Is anyone else having that issue?
