Quick question: I want to flash Anon RA recovery but I already have Clockwork mod installed, do I need to delete clockwork first or can i just flash anon ra from the bootloader no problem? i dont want to run into any problems.
Followup question: for anon ra is there a similar "rom manager" app that works with it?
Longer explanation: Ive been trying out several sense gingerbread roms and noticed how fast i max out my internal memory. I read you can partition the memory card and use an apps to sd card app to fix this, but if you try to partition with clockwork you could potentially brick the phone. even though its been addressed in later versions it looks like it has still happened a couple times and this makes me nervous. plus it seems everyone says anon ra is a better recovery anyway.
Thanks!
You can just flash amon-ra without deleting clockwork. I don't know of a rom manager app for amon-ra but its safer and more thorough to do everything manually in recovery anyway
We're comin from a pure power source.
Just flash amon ra from Rom manager, its near the bottom, I think it says "flash alternate recovery". And remember, you can't do a nand restore from ra that you made with cwm.
I have to disagree with that, sorry. The best thing to do with Rom Manager is uninstall it. Flash the AR PC36IMG.zip from the AR thread in the Dev section
thanks worked well. deleted rom manager too just to be sure
Installing Amon Ra from ROM Manager or flashing it manually doesn't matter. Either way will yield the same results. But I agree with getting rid of ROM Manager. So make it useful one time to flash Amon Ra before you delete it and then part ways.

Just beware, in case it wasn't clear, you cannot use backups made with Clockwork on Amon and vice versa. It would be wise to immediately create a new nandroid backup when you switch over to Amon. Don't forget to make an individual Wimax nandroid backup too.
How do you get rid of backups to save space?
I created a clockwork backup but plan on switching to Amon Ra so I want to erase all unnecessary files.

I am kind of a noob to all this... that being said I know I can just flash amon from a rom manger and then then go back to clockwork. I would prefer not I want to just reroot my phone start from a fresh start. If I pull the recovery files that I nandroided off of clockwork can I use them in amon ra? For instance I go to my clockwork file and then backup and then take the folder of of the back i want can I drop that into the same spot on amon and it work? I am still in the process of downloading amon so not sure how the file structor is the same. Hopefully this is understandable and if so please help.
I know you guys are going to ask why not just use rom manger, I would prefer not to I like actully going into recovery and wipeing and flashing myself just me maybe I will work my way into using rom manager but not at this time.
Thanks for any help
1) ask questions in the q&a forum
2) as far as taking nandroid from clockwork and dropping them where armon finds them, it should work, however I do remember reading posts somewhere mention occasionally having problems with this approach. try it and see. if it were me, I would make my nandroids with armon, and use armon to restore them. consistency is better, and then if there is a problem, you don't have to question another potential source of the problem.
I was on the AMon RA Recovery v1 8.0 and I could use quickboot to get into recovery and do nandroid backups easily. Now I flashed the clockwork recovery and tried using the full version of Rom Manager to do a nandroid and all it does is ask me what to name the file and reboot me to a white screen with options to reboot, recovery, usb toggle and that is about it, no option to do a nandroid backup. When I thought it was supposed to do it itself seeing as that is what the menu says.
I guess I need to reflash the RA Recovery and do it manually. But before I try anything else is this clockwork app good for anything? Can it install ROMs ok or has this app been forgotten and is no longer updated?
Because Clockwork does not restore a nandroid you made using RA, and vice-versa.
I know that. I need to know if clockwork is broken currently. I saw a similar thread for a different phone and they are having the same problem.
I just went ahead and flash the RA recovery so I could make a nandroid backup. Then I can flash the clockwork recovery again and then try installing CM... Nah screw it clockwork is buggy. I'll just download CM6 and install it via RA.
I used clockwork to make a backup. You have to go into the recovery menu, and once in there, then you have an option to do a backup. They probably should have re-worded that top menu option to recovery/backup instead of just recovery.
I think CW and Rom Manager are both buggy in my experience I would stick with RA.
I was hoping some of you could decisively wrap up these issues for an Android newb...
ClockworkMod - What is it and what exactly does it do?
Amon RA - How is it different than ClockworkMod?
In ROM Manager, the "Flash Latest Recovery" option shows CWM v3.0.0.4 as my current and v2.6.0.1 as the latest. Why has the version been reverted?
What is a NANDROID backup? I gather that Amon RA makes a NANDROID backup, but CWM does not. Does this mean CWM backups are less thorough?
In the Amon RA recovery console, there is an option for "Nand backup" and another for "Nand + ext backup". What's the difference?
Following up with the previous question: I understand ext is a partition on my phone (I understand that much from using Linux a little). I have not changed the partition since buying the phone - is it recommended that I re-partition? What would be the ideal setup?
That's it for now. I appreciate all the help.
I never received any feedback on this post and I think it was because the title was very generic. Any help you can give would be appreciated.

1. CWM is a custom recovery. It allows you to flash new roms and kernels and make backups of your current setup.
2. Ra is also a custom recovery. I prefer it over CWM. In the old days, if I remember correctly, RA backed up your wimax keys while CWM didn't. Also it was rumored that CWM didn't wipe correctly. Now I think they're pretty much the same. I just like the yellow words over the horrible green that CWM uses.
3. It may have been reverted because of the differences between the partitions on different evos.
4. CWM makes nandroid backups too. They both backup everything. A nandroid backup will back up everything on your phone. It is highly recommended to make a nandroid before you flash anything onto your phone. If it breaks something or bootloops your phone then you can restore that backup and go back to how you were.
5. The nand backs up the phone, the nand+ext backs up the phone and the ext partition on your sd card where your apps are installed.
6. The ext partition is on your sdcard. (IMO) No need for apps2sd unless you have a crazy amount of apps on your phone or you have a bunch of huge games.

Clockwork is a recovery. It does many different things ex. Flashing, Wiping, Partitioning etc.
RA use to be the only one to back up wimax now clockwork has this feature and with RA you was not able to navigate through folders like clockwork but now you can with the new update.
I'm not sure about the 3rd question.
A nandroid is backing up your entire phone so that you can restore if you run into any problems it backs up everything except your splashscreen or ext partition unless you choose to back that up. RA & Clockwork can perform a nandroid Clockwork didn't have the ability to backup wimax keys(4g).
Nand is everything except your partition you use the ext if you use darktremor a2sd it backs up everything and your partition.
Only repartition if you want to install apps to sd, cache, or dalvik to your sd card saves internal space on the phone.
Hope I helped

Buff nailed it great, I'll explain #3.
Clockworkmod team jumped the gun with their 3.0 recoveries betting that all the developers had switched to the newer edify scripts which appeared with Froyo and are required to script a Gigngerbread rom. The older scripting used ammend which is what 90% of the developers are still using. This made the 3.0 based recovery incompatible with 90% of the roms out there so Cloockwork team had to come up with a backward compatible release and numbered it 2.6.01. This is the version you need unless you are going to install the CM7 roms. 2.6.0.1 is compatible with all hboots, all partitions, and backs up and wipes everything Aman RA does so they are pretty much equal. The difference is if you flash the clockworkmod recovery all the features of rom manager will still work, if you flash aman ra, rom manager is useless.
So then at this stage is one better than the other?
I'm still new to "daily" ROM flashing and liked the ROM Manager but heard that RA was better (have that now)
I'd like the ease of switching between ROMs to figure out likes/dislikes.

About the same now. I actually prefer coming here and reading threads and manually downloading and flashing my roms over rom manager. I like to see screenies and see changelogs and read feedback.
Sent from my nook COLOR.
I have read other threads in regards to this but nothing up to date. I wanted to know what is recommended now especially since gingerbread is out. And another question is if I do a nandroid backup in CW can I restore in Ra??

Personally I like Amon-Ra better & I believe if you do a backup w/ one recovery you can't restore w/ another one.
IN RA what is the USB-ms Toggle.

It mounts your SD card on a conputer

I like Amon RA better. I have never had a problem with it. I'm still running 1.8 with out any issues and I flash a lot.

SO i guess the upside to USB-ms toggle that you can mount your sd card while in recovery mode.
Which has better support though CW or RA.. I have read on other posts that RA will not be around much longer. And also that some have dual booted these two together..
its all preferance, both do the same thing, and both are not interchangable when it comes to nandroid backups, that should answer everything
Amon is better looking, but clockwork has support from rom manager. Both backup your wimax keys now.

Most people on the forums like Amon Ra more. It is less glitchy than CW and it has never let me down. (Clockwork mod totally messed up my Evo once)
But if you want to be a newb and use Rom Manager instead of flashing in the recovery, you need to use ClockworkMod.
I prefer Amon RA
I use Amon's because it is compatible with Fresh Evo.
Clockwork has issues with Fresh Evo. Also, being able to mount SD from recovery is very very nice.
I prefer Amon_RA for two reasons:
1) Its layout makes more sense to me.
2) Selective backup. In CMR you backup your /data, /cache, /system, /boot, wimax, and .android_secure folders/partitions every time, no matter what. In Amon_RA, I can tell it to just backup /data, /system, and /boot, cutting down the size of a backup from 30-50%, nevermind the time it takes to backup/restore. Let's face it, you DON'T need to backup your WiMAX every day, backing up cache is pointless (because the ROM/kernel can just rebuild it later), and .android_secure is on the SD card already (if your SD card goes, how are you going to restore your nandroid anyways?).
And a half-reason: Amon_RA still supports amend and edify scripts, so files like FORMAT_ALL.zip work for it, but not CMR.
Having said that, if you're looking for an easier time, and don't mind pruning your SD card more often, ClockworkMod Recovery is your choice, since it integrates completely with ROM Manager. You just select a ROM in ROM Manager, let it download, tell it to wipe and backup, then come back to your phone in a few minutes and you're in a new ROM.
Eh... i use amon-ra.. but i have had two backups that wouldn't successfully restore (Boot loop). Ended up losing some contacts..
+1 for amon-ra
Cw has given me nothing but problems
I will go out on a limb and say that I use CW, I tried RA, and honestly, I had nothing but problems with it. Looking at a lot of posts, people say that CW never wipes correctly, and I found out on my phone that RA never wiped correctly.
Really it's all a matter of choice though....use what works for you.
I just want to point out that you CAN use ROM Manager to flash even if you have Amon_Ra installed.
I have Ra installed and when a new CM7 Nightly come out, I get a notification, I tap it, and ROM Mananger does the rest.
There are other functions in ROM Manager that don't work unless you have Clockwork installed though, for sure. I just wanted to point that out!
Ra 1.8 has been flawless for me so far. I am moving on to try 2.3, but i don't really know if i want the new complications...
@drmacinyasha, if one goes the 2.3 route, after the initial backup of everything, what is the minimum you would recommend one backs up w/ all the options available?? /data, /system & /boot only? (as you posted)...and why?
Ok. Would I be able to do a nandroid back up and installing it on another EVO. Could that be done with RA or CW???

I believe it is technically possible but highly discouraged. Some of the things you back up are unique to your phone. I wouldn't do it.
I have Rom Manager installed on my device. I like to make backups in both ClockworkMod and AmonRA, but since I loaded CM7 (2.3.3 and 2.3.4) I can't flash between recoveries. My RM says my current recovery is CWM3005, but when I boot in recovery its RA! When I try to flash CWM, it says it is successfully flashed, but it is not! Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas would be appreciated.
I'm having the same issue. I switched to Amon Ra just to give it a shot and now I can't go back. On a related note, is it possible to restore a backup made with clockwork in Amon Ra (or vice versa)?
First off, Rom Manager is junk. Sorry, but it is.
Second, use Amon Ra, really. That's all you need.
Hipkat, thanks for your helpful post.
z3r0d3vil, I did some digging, andit looks like the only way to fix this issue is to reflash CWM through the hboot. I had trouble finding a good explanation how on xda, but here's a link from android forums.
Regarding Amon RA, my problem was that I wanted to restore a backup made with CWM and couldn't do so without going back to CWM. Now that I can flash through the hboot, I was able to restore the CWM backup and then back it up through Amon. I've since switched to Amon as my primary recovery. Hope this helps!
On second thought, xda won't let me post a URL because I haven't made enough posts. If you still need it, message me and I'll give it to you.
