I have Rom Manager installed on my device. I like to make backups in both ClockworkMod and AmonRA, but since I loaded CM7 (2.3.3 and 2.3.4) I can't flash between recoveries. My RM says my current recovery is CWM3005, but when I boot in recovery its RA! When I try to flash CWM, it says it is successfully flashed, but it is not! Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas would be appreciated.
I'm having the same issue. I switched to Amon Ra just to give it a shot and now I can't go back. On a related note, is it possible to restore a backup made with clockwork in Amon Ra (or vice versa)?
First off, Rom Manager is junk. Sorry, but it is.
Second, use Amon Ra, really. That's all you need.
Hipkat, thanks for your helpful post.
z3r0d3vil, I did some digging, andit looks like the only way to fix this issue is to reflash CWM through the hboot. I had trouble finding a good explanation how on xda, but here's a link from android forums.
Regarding Amon RA, my problem was that I wanted to restore a backup made with CWM and couldn't do so without going back to CWM. Now that I can flash through the hboot, I was able to restore the CWM backup and then back it up through Amon. I've since switched to Amon as my primary recovery. Hope this helps!
On second thought, xda won't let me post a URL because I haven't made enough posts. If you still need it, message me and I'll give it to you.

I am kind of a noob to all this... that being said I know I can just flash amon from a rom manger and then then go back to clockwork. I would prefer not I want to just reroot my phone start from a fresh start. If I pull the recovery files that I nandroided off of clockwork can I use them in amon ra? For instance I go to my clockwork file and then backup and then take the folder of of the back i want can I drop that into the same spot on amon and it work? I am still in the process of downloading amon so not sure how the file structor is the same. Hopefully this is understandable and if so please help.
I know you guys are going to ask why not just use rom manger, I would prefer not to I like actully going into recovery and wipeing and flashing myself just me maybe I will work my way into using rom manager but not at this time.
Thanks for any help
1) ask questions in the q&a forum
2) as far as taking nandroid from clockwork and dropping them where armon finds them, it should work, however I do remember reading posts somewhere mention occasionally having problems with this approach. try it and see. if it were me, I would make my nandroids with armon, and use armon to restore them. consistency is better, and then if there is a problem, you don't have to question another potential source of the problem.

Where can I get information on exactly how recoveries work? I know what RECOVERY is, I've been using it but I don't know HOW it works. I'm using RA recovery (by accident) and don't want to flash ANYTHING until I learn more about recoveries. Would reinstalling Clockwork replace RA?
BACKGROUND:
I'm a recovering flashaholic and I'm looking for a little education. Recently, I toasted ClockworkMod recovery when flashing EVOnonsense (latest), I'd still like to know how that happens. Afterwards, everytime I returned to CW (through HBOOT or ROM MANAGER) recovery, my Evo would lock up at the white bootscreen. I managed to flash RA recovery from ROM MANAGER (without knowing what the ALTERNATE RECOVERY option in ROM MANAGER did). When my Evo booted into RA, I had no clue what I was looking at (I do now and I like RA more than CW).
Please don't ask me to "Google it", if you don't know, don't answer. Or educate me on "what" to Google. Thank you.
Pretty much nandroid backups are binary snapshots of the OS partitions in the memory of the phone that's saved to your SD card. Much like the programs Acronis Drive Image (good stuff), and Symantecs' Ghost (suckage) does with hard drives. Recovery programs like RA, and Clockwork just do the reading, and writing of the data. Well a few other things added here and there like wiping cache, and Dalvik.
I rooted with unrevoked and have been happy. I made a back up with clockwork mod then quickly changed my recovery to amonra because I was told it would back up the 4g keys. Now I have flashed myns (first rom other than stock) and would like to go back to using clockwork so I can flash roms like crazy from rom manager. Is there anything I need to know before changing back.
Also if I need to go back to my stock nandroid back-up on amonra with my 4g keys, how can I get back to amonra again??
I want to try cyanogen mod 7 nightly.
Thanks in advance.

I personally wouldn't switch back to clockwork, IMO, Amon RA is more stable and reliable. I have also grown very partial to doing all of my flashing manually from recovery, and have stayed away from using ROM manager for flashing and wiping. I just dont trust it. However, if you do indeed wish to use clockwork and ROM manager, the simplest way to switch between Amon RA and Clockwork recovery is by using ROM manager. There is an option in within ROM manager that says "flash clockworkMOD recovery". That will flash you back to the most recently updated clockwork recovery. If you want to switch back to Amon Ra, there is an option "flash alternate Recovery". That will flash you back to Amons recovery. Just remember, any nandroids you created with Amon, can only be restored by Amon, and any created by clockwork can only be restored by clockwork. They are NOT interchangeable, and will cause problems if you try.
I updated clockwork recovery through rom manager and now my Evo gets stuck at the white boot screen whenever I try to go into recovery.. if i'm just booting regularly then it works fine...
Help?

I would try reflashing the recovery. Actually, I suggest using Amon Ra recovery. You can use ROM manager to do that if you'd like, select 'flash alternate recovery' It sounds like something went wrong during the recovery flash. Good luck.

reflashed to an earlier version of clockwork and it works now
Why do you suggest amon ra recovery instead? whats the difference?

I guess it's really just user preference actually. Some people swear by clockwork, others by Amon. The main reason I started using Amon Ra, is because when I first rooted and was using clockwork, I kept getting bootloops when trying to flash any ROM. I changed recoveries to Amon Ra and never looked back. I have been able to flash everything I've wanted, and can get to recovery every time I try. Also, Amon Ra backs up your wimax RSA keys. I know some versions of clockwork do now (not sure which one) but clockwork used to not be capable of backing up the RSA keys, so that was another reason I initially started using Amon, and I just always have since then. It seems like any time someone is having trouble flashing something, they are using clockwork, then they report that changing to Amon fixed the problem. It's just mroe reliable in my opinion. But as I said, its user preference, and I'm sure clockwork works flawlessly for a lot of people. To each their own!
Quick question: I want to flash Anon RA recovery but I already have Clockwork mod installed, do I need to delete clockwork first or can i just flash anon ra from the bootloader no problem? i dont want to run into any problems.
Followup question: for anon ra is there a similar "rom manager" app that works with it?
Longer explanation: Ive been trying out several sense gingerbread roms and noticed how fast i max out my internal memory. I read you can partition the memory card and use an apps to sd card app to fix this, but if you try to partition with clockwork you could potentially brick the phone. even though its been addressed in later versions it looks like it has still happened a couple times and this makes me nervous. plus it seems everyone says anon ra is a better recovery anyway.
Thanks!
You can just flash amon-ra without deleting clockwork. I don't know of a rom manager app for amon-ra but its safer and more thorough to do everything manually in recovery anyway
We're comin from a pure power source.
Just flash amon ra from Rom manager, its near the bottom, I think it says "flash alternate recovery". And remember, you can't do a nand restore from ra that you made with cwm.
I have to disagree with that, sorry. The best thing to do with Rom Manager is uninstall it. Flash the AR PC36IMG.zip from the AR thread in the Dev section
thanks worked well. deleted rom manager too just to be sure
Installing Amon Ra from ROM Manager or flashing it manually doesn't matter. Either way will yield the same results. But I agree with getting rid of ROM Manager. So make it useful one time to flash Amon Ra before you delete it and then part ways.
Sent from my V6 Supercharged HTC Evo 4G using the official XDA app.
Just beware, in case it wasn't clear, you cannot use backups made with Clockwork on Amon and vice versa. It would be wise to immediately create a new nandroid backup when you switch over to Amon. Don't forget to make an individual Wimax nandroid backup too.
How do you get rid of backups to save space?
I created a clockwork backup but plan on switching to Amon Ra so I want to erase all unnecessary files.
