a few question on recoveries. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted with unrevoked and have been happy. I made a back up with clockwork mod then quickly changed my recovery to amonra because I was told it would back up the 4g keys. Now I have flashed myns (first rom other than stock) and would like to go back to using clockwork so I can flash roms like crazy from rom manager. Is there anything I need to know before changing back.
Also if I need to go back to my stock nandroid back-up on amonra with my 4g keys, how can I get back to amonra again??
I want to try cyanogen mod 7 nightly.
Thanks in advance.

I personally wouldn't switch back to clockwork, IMO, Amon RA is more stable and reliable. I have also grown very partial to doing all of my flashing manually from recovery, and have stayed away from using ROM manager for flashing and wiping. I just dont trust it. However, if you do indeed wish to use clockwork and ROM manager, the simplest way to switch between Amon RA and Clockwork recovery is by using ROM manager. There is an option in within ROM manager that says "flash clockworkMOD recovery". That will flash you back to the most recently updated clockwork recovery. If you want to switch back to Amon Ra, there is an option "flash alternate Recovery". That will flash you back to Amons recovery. Just remember, any nandroids you created with Amon, can only be restored by Amon, and any created by clockwork can only be restored by clockwork. They are NOT interchangeable, and will cause problems if you try.

Why can't I do a nandroid backup with Clockwork

I was on the AMon RA Recovery v1 8.0 and I could use quickboot to get into recovery and do nandroid backups easily. Now I flashed the clockwork recovery and tried using the full version of Rom Manager to do a nandroid and all it does is ask me what to name the file and reboot me to a white screen with options to reboot, recovery, usb toggle and that is about it, no option to do a nandroid backup. When I thought it was supposed to do it itself seeing as that is what the menu says.
I guess I need to reflash the RA Recovery and do it manually. But before I try anything else is this clockwork app good for anything? Can it install ROMs ok or has this app been forgotten and is no longer updated?
Because Clockwork does not restore a nandroid you made using RA, and vice-versa.
I know that. I need to know if clockwork is broken currently. I saw a similar thread for a different phone and they are having the same problem.
I just went ahead and flash the RA recovery so I could make a nandroid backup. Then I can flash the clockwork recovery again and then try installing CM... Nah screw it clockwork is buggy. I'll just download CM6 and install it via RA.
I used clockwork to make a backup. You have to go into the recovery menu, and once in there, then you have an option to do a backup. They probably should have re-worded that top menu option to recovery/backup instead of just recovery.
I think CW and Rom Manager are both buggy in my experience I would stick with RA.

[Q] how to get from clockwork to AmonRA for new root

Im about to root using unrevoked and have been reading about the rsa keys and clockwork not backing them up in nand back up.
My question is how do I go from a fresh root with clockwork recovery to AmonRA recovery.
Do I need to do nandroid back-up in clockwork then flash the AmonRA recovery with rom manager.
Also, can I change to AmonRA recovery with the free rom manager? If not is there another way to do it.
Basically I want to be with (for now) a stock rom, rooted, with amronRA, a nandroid back-up, and wireless tether.
You can flash to amon-ra with Rom manager. Open up rom manager and scroll to the bottom of the menu. There's a button that should say Flash Alternate Recovery and then RA REcovery v 1.80. Push that and it'll install amon-ra for you. Just be warned that rom manager won't be able to flash any roms for you after that, and you'll have to push the roms to your phone and boot into recovery and flash everything manually.
Yes use rom manager to switch. You can nandroid with clockwork if you worried, than use rom manager to switch to amonsra, than redo you nandroid with amonra!! Easy to do. Just don't think to hard about it!!!

Updated Clockwork, now can't use old backups, need help

So I was using Nandroid to backup everything, but then I switched to clockwork and upgraded it to the newest version in ROM Manager.
I want to flash the recovery I made yesterday with nandroid. Ive switched back to Nandroid in the rom manager but it still wont flash the recovery.
How do i get my nandroid backups installed again?
Clockwork wont be able.to restore nandroid backup. You must switch back.to RA recovery to do.this. Clockwork makes a different type of backup format n its located under clockwork folder.
You can use Rom Manager to switch back to RA Recovery

I have switched back to RA recovery via ROM Manager.
I get part way through the recovery and it says "oops, something went wrong".
RA Recovery is at v2.2.2, when I was in the process of recovering before I got the oops message it says RA Recovery v2.3.
Is it possible I am using a version of RA to restore than the version I made the backup with, causing me problems?
Really appreciate it.
Still can't get this recovery installed.

In order for you to flash your recoveries you need to go back to Clockwork Mod recovery v. 2.6.0.1. It's at the bottom of the article by Koush. Flash it, reboot, turn off your phone, and then do a manual restore of your backup from recovery using v. 2.6.0.1.
Here is a PC36IMG.zip if you want to go that route instead.
I got the 'oops' error before....I solved it by wiping all, flashing a rom.zip then once booted back up I was able to use my backups with no issues

I would try reflashing the recovery. Actually, I suggest using Amon Ra recovery. You can use ROM manager to do that if you'd like, select 'flash alternate recovery' It sounds like something went wrong during the recovery flash. Good luck.

reflashed to an earlier version of clockwork and it works now

I guess it's really just user preference actually. Some people swear by clockwork, others by Amon. The main reason I started using Amon Ra, is because when I first rooted and was using clockwork, I kept getting bootloops when trying to flash any ROM. I changed recoveries to Amon Ra and never looked back. I have been able to flash everything I've wanted, and can get to recovery every time I try. Also, Amon Ra backs up your wimax RSA keys. I know some versions of clockwork do now (not sure which one) but clockwork used to not be capable of backing up the RSA keys, so that was another reason I initially started using Amon, and I just always have since then. It seems like any time someone is having trouble flashing something, they are using clockwork, then they report that changing to Amon fixed the problem. It's just mroe reliable in my opinion. But as I said, its user preference, and I'm sure clockwork works flawlessly for a lot of people. To each their own!

[Q] Rom Manager & flashing between recoveries

I have Rom Manager installed on my device. I like to make backups in both ClockworkMod and AmonRA, but since I loaded CM7 (2.3.3 and 2.3.4) I can't flash between recoveries. My RM says my current recovery is CWM3005, but when I boot in recovery its RA! When I try to flash CWM, it says it is successfully flashed, but it is not! Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas would be appreciated.
I'm having the same issue. I switched to Amon Ra just to give it a shot and now I can't go back. On a related note, is it possible to restore a backup made with clockwork in Amon Ra (or vice versa)?
First off, Rom Manager is junk. Sorry, but it is.
Second, use Amon Ra, really. That's all you need.
Hipkat, thanks for your helpful post.
z3r0d3vil, I did some digging, andit looks like the only way to fix this issue is to reflash CWM through the hboot. I had trouble finding a good explanation how on xda, but here's a link from android forums.
Regarding Amon RA, my problem was that I wanted to restore a backup made with CWM and couldn't do so without going back to CWM. Now that I can flash through the hboot, I was able to restore the CWM backup and then back it up through Amon. I've since switched to Amon as my primary recovery. Hope this helps!
On second thought, xda won't let me post a URL because I haven't made enough posts. If you still need it, message me and I'll give it to you.
