[Request] Create forums by manufacturer - About xda-developers.com

There are so many forums on here now that navigating is getting to be a headache. Any chance the admins would consider creating a forum for each manufacturer and putting each phone as a sub-forum under its respective manufacturer?

Need for an android section?

Hi Everyone,
We got some requests to split this forum up into a WM and and Android section, please let us know your opinion by voting on the poll.
Thanks in advance!
Flar
Hey Flar,
We probably should either do that or simply rename the "General" to Android as most of (if not all) of the latest threads in that section have been about Android. I will probably be a lot simpler to just rename them. As far as the other threads (oder one relating to WM), we can transfer them to the ROM Development section.
But we should definitely do that since the Vogue has been one of the most successful devices for Android porting, so I think it deserves its own section.
My two cents...
Isn't the Touch General section already an Android section?

No, a lot of people still post application-related WinMo support questions there.
It makes sense the General forum should be for stock devices.
They get rapidly buried due to the constant Android activity.

Who uses stock?!?!?
If you have a good set of general guidelines (instruction sets and a good Q&A thread), there is no need for this "General" section.
In fact, that just gave me an idea...

Well, given the choice of "ROM Development" and "General", people put their questions in General.
Renaming the forums to "Touch CDMA Android" and "Touch CMDA Windows Mobile" would be satisfactory.

Well, considering that it is only a matter of renaming the section, I don't believe that there is much to be done in that (especially considering that they have already renamed most sections on the site a few days ago).

touch cdma Accessories ---need i go on
ps i vote yes again lol
The vogue and kaiser both need an "Android Development" forum since we are completely running android without windows mobile.
Android dev forum added!

Can we have an iPad section?

Not sure who this goes to, so I'll drop it here...
We really need an iPad section. There is a lot of potential, and people out there interested in Android and Linux and even ChromeOS development for iPad. This could really take off...

I meant here, I would really help XDA. It could really take off. The market is there, just Google openiboot, it's by hexxeh. It runs on iPad but people need to start developing on it. And plus, there's no big "iPad Development" section. There's an iPad subforum of Hardware, but most of the threads are closed, not much activity on that forum.

The reason for not having apple hardware on xda was partly due to trolling etc.
I think the best place would be iPD, given you can load your account in there too.
The issue is very few people get into hacking the iDevices, giving an appearance of not much going on...
If you think there is a lot of demand, pm NotATreoFan and see what he says, as he could add a section if demand exists

Load my XDA account or Apple account? Confused there...
Here's four links from a VERY quick Google search, aggregate but still, it's something.

http://thenextweb.com/mobile/2010/11/12/openiboot-could-soon-bring-android-to-ipad-and-iphone-4/

http://www.padgadget.com/2010/11/12/android-on-ipad-and-iphone-getting-closer/
I'll loop in NotATreoFan and we'll see what he says.
The decision to move all iOS-related hardware/software to iPhone Developers was made by the owners of XDA. If the demand is there, I can create a new forum over at iPD for this cause, and you can create a closed thread here linking directly to it.
As for the username suggestion by Pulser, he is referring to the fact that all XDA usernames are reserved over at iPD, so you can transfer your account and keep the same ID/pass.

If you are aware of a group of people who would like to see this, create a new thread over at iPD expressing the desire. Once enough people chime in, I can create the section you need.

You have to "register." When you click the register link, there will be an option to transfer your XDA account. Enter your user/pass in those fields, and everything will be moved over.

No one's demanding "master." lol
Does the symbolism of the word "development" in the forum really make a difference? Surely it is the content quality that matters more than the heading?
The iPad section looks fine to me. Make a thread, post what you have, get others involved.
When there is too much activity, and a separate section is needed, per
IMHO, does make a difference. Keeps it organized for one...for two, easier to find stuff.
I have to agree with Pulser here. If there is not a lot of activity in a "General" forum, why make a whole new development section for one or two threads. At this time, I'd say asking for a Development specific section is a little "demanding."
All in all, it seems you are more focused on the "titles" and "status" instead of the actual developing. I hope that is not the case, because that is outside XDA/iPD's "spirit" or "soul."
Start posting development stuff in General and if/when it gets popular and messy, we can make a new development section and move things around.

Okie Dokie.

[Q] Why can't I post a new thread in Accessories?

There is nothing there and I want to ask opinions about the Samsung Flip Cover. I can start this thread here but I cannot post to an empty subheading that is completely empty!
Let's start talking about accessories
These forums are in the process of being seperated by carriers so it could be server or user error, with the additional possibility of this happening because of the separation of forums... There is a possibility that these forums may reek havoc until everything is separated...
Thanks for the reply. I hope that the accessories do not get split off. Since all the carriers have the same phone, the accessories will all be the same.

If you click the Accessories section, you are redirected to the i9300 International Accessories forum. Because all models are the same, they are not being split.

By the way, and it's no criticism just a hint, moderators are not always able to monitor each single post in order to capture such requests i.e. they might get "lost".
But every post contains a so called "Report Post" button, by which you can easily, fast and reliable alert the responsible moderation team for various reasons. This also includes requests to move a thread. Details are available here.
I know. But thanks anyway.

Am I the only one finding these Forums are extremely problematic to navigate?

Yes, it is very biased towards thinking everything is a manufacturer.
If I search for "EDL" the first 10 results are Motorola Edge, Samsung Edge and "Realme GT Master Edition"???

I don't have much trouble. I can find what I want easily most times. Most here understand the system and its limitations.
Most forums aren't any easier... the simplest solution other then already mentioned here is to start your own forum. That way it will be perfect.

Get serious. The taxonomy here is completely opaque.
The (full website) "Topics" sidebar is completely useless.
The big banner for "XDA Computing" is misleading/distracting (even if they are trying to promote it).
The fact that newbs are always posting stuff in the wrong place is surely a reason to reconsider some of this.
The fact that this thread is in "Forums -> XDA Computing -> Build-a-PC -> Battlestations" is another.
All of these complaints and questions belong in this thread.
