Permanent LOS? Reboot/Batt pull/Flashing doesn't help - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I woke up today w/ the dreaded zero slash on my signal bar. I've been flashing like a maniac today and doing constant soft/hard boots. We also had a major snowstorm today in Jersey. So I'm not sure if this is really a faulty tower on Sprint's end or a real LOS. I've tried everything so far except a factory data wipe. BTW, I apologize in advance for being another LOS question.

I just talked to sprint and the towers are disabled due to the snowstorm. I live in North NJ btw. If this was any other phone I prob wouldn't think of LOS bug, lol. I went all crazy for nothin!

I live in North Jersey also and my phone is getting no signal at all. It's been like the whole day. I used an app called Roam Control (PAID) and I still get no service. I have 5 lines on my account and my GF and her mom have a Nexus S's and they aren't getting service. My GF's cousin is using an Evo Shift and his is working fine.
Is it a coincidence that the phones that aren't working g are made by Samsung? I'm on wifi now and have been all day. It's very frustrating and I will be calling for a credit.
My AT&T line has service and has had it all day.
Sent from SGSII.

Also in NJ, Morris county, and have had good signal all day, with several long conversations about this storm. Go figure.
Epic touch, btw.

sprint 4g out of service

people need help, cant connect to 4g net when in 4g area ,turn it on and its start scanning, then connect to sprint, than scanning again. call to sprint customer service they say "we are out of 4g service" . have evo, anybody now what is it
I did not call sprint, but 4G has been practically non existent in Los Angeles for a few days at least. Places where I had consistent 4G don't come up as 4G anymore. I asked my friend with an EVO - he said the same thing.
no different here
I officially declare shenanigans! No 4g service here in Cincy. Called sprint a couple days ago about the issues with mms and haven't had 4g since. Updated 12/15 and lost the mms. The funny thing is I was told by numerous sprint "techs" to hard reset. This didn't work. Called back tonight got mms kicking full force but still no answer for 4g. I was referred to repair center.
Great phone. The network is questionable!
Update: unofficial from sprint is that it appears to be a common problem with the phone. Had mine at the shop yesterday and new phone is on the way.
its look like everybody have 4g except us, my doesnt work in chicago, los angeles, kansas city, portland nowhere
4g working fine here in OC. Connected to Kansas on speedtest and got 5218kbs down and 1006up
Works in Houston.
It appears that it is a phone issue more so than a network issue according to intermittent reports on forums and what I was fed at the sprint store. The evos are apparently on backorder for replacement devices.
Mine went south too and everything I can find looks like its working (mac, keys, etc) and I can connect to clearwire-wmx.net realm. I spoke with four or five Sprint techs today and they were all at a loss. It seems to have happened shortly after I upgraded to the newest OTA.
It took mine nearly three weeks after recent OTA but I constantly had intermittent signal loss of the 4g service for no apprentices reason. I can't say this enough. Great phone! Questionable carrier. This actually couldn't have come at a better time for me since I am just getting ready for my virgin root voyage.

4g service but no 3g?

This JUST started yesterday...
So, yesterday at work I noticed I had no data...so I did the typical restart...still no data...I shrugged it off and went on my way. As I was driving I had data again. I use wifi at home, so when I got home I didnt notice any issues and honestly kinda forgot about it. Well on my way back to work this morning I looked at my phone...had full 4g service...all seemed well. Then I got to my office...
Now let me explain I DO have 4g in this area but honestly...its only a solid 4g outside. Its not the greatest indoors. Well in my office I only get 4g if I'm standing at the window or one "sweet" spot at my desk. So 99% of the time I'm in 3g. Well to make a long story short my 3g antenna seems to be borked. I can pull 4g fine...on lunch today I was in 4g and it was working great. However, when I'm in 3g I get zero data...my phone doesnt work in 3g only 4g.
I called verizon and they just decided to send me a new phone...
I have rooted my phone and I have put the newest radio on. That was awhile ago though. Tonight I'm going to try flashing a different radio but has anyone else had this problem?
Again I get NO 3g service only 4g. In an area where 4g is spotty thats NOT good.
Thanks!
Yes, I had the same issue. The first Nexus I had gave me spotty 4G service and never went to 3G in the couple of weeks I had it. Amazon sent me a replacement which is rock-solid. I get solid 4G coverage where I should (my wife and several coworkers have LTE phones so I know where I should) and when I don't have that 3G kicks right in.
I think you should definitely expected better results with a replacement. Good luck.
I had chosen to use 3G over 4G to save battery life. After about a week with the phone I began to notice that I can hardly ever get 3G reception any more, even though 4G reception has always been excellent. I don't think it is a problem with the phone, but rather Verizon tinkering with its network.
I was having the same problem all day today.
I switch the phone to CDMA during the day and use the office's WiFi for data. However, I noticed today as I dropped my daughter off at school after lunch that I had voice only and no data. Her school is the first tower north of my office that doesn't have an LTE radio, so I normally just get 3G.
Not today.
I drove back to the office and I was able to get data through the LTE radio, but the data connection would go dead as soon as I switched to CDMA. I thought there might be something wrong with the CDMA tower, but two of my co-workers had Thunderbolts set to CDMA only and they were having no problems getting data connections.
I talked with tech support for a good couple hours this afternoon and they had nothing for me. Eventually I flashed the leaked 4.0.3 radios and CDMA magically started working again.
Did the new radios fixed the problem, or is it just a coincidence?
Hmmm...
I have been having the same issue since yesterday. Verizon said there is no outages in the area. I had no data all the way home from CT to NY and finally when I got home at night 4G worked. 4G was working in and out on my way in so I forced CDMA to see if that worked and I have been unable to get anything since. I have a new SIM coming today, but somehow I do not think that will solve the issue.
I've noticed this too. I was turning my LTE off thinking it would use 3g, but I'm noticing now that many times I either have 4g or no data at all.

I'm having the exact same problems and registered here to see what the resolution is. I'm apprehensive to root as I am still within the 15 day return window and quite frankly for 300$ I think this is total BS. Never had a dropped call, missed or unsent text on the 3g network on my old Dinc and I've lived in the same place for 2 years.
OP- could you keep this updated on how your new device works out?
same exact thing happened to me. I'm already on my second nexus and I didn't want a refurb or to lose root. So I flash android revolution hd , used tb to delete all my apps, and hid all signs of root including deleting su. I took it to Verizon and they gave me a new sim card. It was OK for about a day then started acting up again. So I called them from my wife's phone and they had to reset my number to the network and its been fine since

What do you mean by reset your number to your network? Never heard that term before
I'm not exactly sure, some techs don't know about it. When I had my charge it had no data. So they reset my number and phone to the network and I immediately got data back

Anyone having horrible sprint service this week?

Hi guys, I'm sure many feel the service generally sucks everyday but I feel over the last week it's Ben horrible. I've had days of trying to send text messages, of dialing and waiting over a minute for the phone to start ringing, of 1x data speed with full bars. If you have had an upswing of issues like this please let me know. My girlfriend and I have both been having problems, and yesterday we talked with a lady in the city south of us, where she said she'd had such problems alot this last week. Just interested, no solutions here, but maybe it will let us know if we can push sprint to credit our way. Stop charging me for 4g there isn't any here!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
working for them ill tell you no they wont credit you back for your lack of service. You are more than welcome to try. But if you are having service issues try updating you profile then your PRL. If that doesnt work try doing ##72786# youll need to get you MSL (Call CS to get it or most stores will give it to you.)
They're probably upgrading towers near you in their network vision. Happened to my friend where he couldn't send texts or call for a while. Google "sprint network upgrades " and look at the first link and it'll show you their network upgrades in your area.

I think sprint is sucks all together for service. I came from att like 4 months ago cause they didnt have 4g at the time and i really wanted 4g. I was told wimax was fast. What i wasent told is in az they dont have wimax. So i got a 4g phone for nothing. Im kinda pissed. Thinking about going to verision cause there speeds are off the chain without doing this and that to get them better.

Good luck with those Tier data plans. $69 for talk + $20 for text + $30-80 for data or whatever it is and the $400 deposit. Plus not to mention all the total data outages theyve been having. God Speed Sir.
I've been having terrible sprint network issues this week. So bad that I've called them twice. They tell me each time that a tower is down/being upgraded in my area. I've installed the 00002 PRL on my wife's and my phones until they get their **** figured out. IDK if I believe them that they are upgrades as I was told it should be fixed by Saturday afternoon and its Monday and they still have issues. Once a day I switch back to the 60685 PRL and check reception. I'm not talking just data either... its voice calls as well. 30-60 seconds to change from "dialing" to ringing and when it does its roaming. Hopefully they fix it soon.
Yeah in LA area i have been getting less bars than i usually get. And dats speeds have gone from 1.4 mbps to 200kbps

I've had inconsistent service for the last month; that's how long I have been working in New Orleans. Perhaps it is due to negative elevation but who knows.
Early in the week I had a lot of texts that said not sent. It was quite annoying. Also the same with calls taking 10 seconds or so to actually connect. I think it may be improving a bit, but not back to 100%. I'm in los angeles as well. On a side note, i've been trying 4g around my area and i've gotten up to 9mbits. In my home its on and off, but better than it used to be.
Thank you for your responses. Its both relieving and disheartening that you guys are also having issues.

Last week I called sprint about my terrible service. They told me that they were doing upgrades in the area and that some towers would be down in the meantime. If you go on their site, they have a map of areas they are gonna be working on or are currently working on.
i just got the Epic 4G Touch yesterday and the data speed is horrendous!
i blame the inrush of iPhone users to Sprint.

wimax no longer working

so here's the deal, I've been using blazer 4.0 and everything is great. I have always had wimax and so these last two days I've been tethering my phone to my ps3 (battlefield 3) and so today all of a sudden it doesn't work anymore. I called Sprint and no help, back to stock nothing, rooted again and tried this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1447615 but no luck. I changed the "realm" to clearwire and my 4g connected but obviously took me to a clearwire page that asked me to purchase a plan. I've used 8gb this month and I know for a fact my 4g radio works...any ideas ? please guys just try and help.
I have the same issue today. Phone runs stock rom, no root no tether. And today I can't pick up any 4G signal. Don't know the reason.
yeah I have no idea what the hell

Maybe theres an outage? Where are you guys?
I'm in West Covina CA but no it can't be an outage because my brothers ns4g connects fine

I though I was the only one with this issue. Charlotte, NC here
I know this is going to sound backwards, but I live in Long Beach, CA and I couldn't get anything but 4G service, my 3G was always on 1x and terribly slow. That has been since Monday, then yesterday evening updated my PRL and both went back to normal or I got my 3G back. But 4G was the only thing that was working.....
I'm also running Phantom 4.0 btw
West of texas 4g is working and been working fine

This maybe a long shot but there was a lot of solar activity that was messing around with electronics. It could be possible that the radios on our phones are more susceptible to this introduction of noise then others. If the phone isn't behaving better today or tomorrow then the problem is likely something else.
My 4G connectivity has been coming in fine until it became non existent since yesterday. Not really sure why, but doing a bunch of resets doesn't help for me as well. The 4G indicator comes on, but no signal bars appear. Hmmm...
Oh, and I'm in Ontario, CA. SoCal tower down perhaps?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
We were in a major solar storm yesterday, it may have had an effect on the towers and/or some of our phones. Try updating prl and profile, see if that works. I'm in Seattle and no problem here but I just got my E4GT so I was flashing and checking out different roms all day.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Thanks guys, even if the solar storm interupted my connection then why do it connect to clearwire? It has to be Sprint and I'm not paying for them to check out my phone when clearly they're the ones controlling it
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
OMG i just started a thread about this.... I thought i was the only one. My gf with an OG Epic connects fine.....my 4g stopped connecting about yesterday...
Forgot to mention I also have a verizon 4g aircard from work and it was working beautifully today with no slow downs or problems
Follow-up from my initial response...
I called Sprint tech support and they had me do the basic pull the battery, reset the phone exercises, but nothing worked. They told me that there was no outage in my area (SoCal) so they escalated me to the 4G team (Tier 2 support).
After about an hour of going through the same exercises, the tech support person opened up a ticket and mentioned that he's been noticing a lot of complaints today of the same issue. He also mentioned something about "dual mode services" not provisioning. Not really sure what that meant, but he told me that he doesn't think it's a hardware issue, but a Sprint side issue which he thinks should be resolved in the next day or two. Regardless, he created a ticket anyway to take with me to the Sprint store if I decide to get it checked out sooner than later.
I guess I'll wait a day (or two) to see if it resolves itself. I'll follow-up with another post if anything tangible happens within this time.
The dual mode comment might refer to the fact that our phones are dual mode-wimax and LTE, from what I understand sprint is going LTE around June or July. Or at least that's what the manager of the store I bought my E4GT at said.

I live in the Hacienda Heights CA, and work at La Punte, city of Industry. I called sprint today, tried to update my prl and profile, but it still doesn't work. Maybe I can wait the sun storm pass out.
Ok ok, here's what happened. This problem started Thursday morning and so after doing the battery pull and blah blah blah I finally went to a Sprint store early Friday morning. While waiting for a tech I notice two e4gt on display so like anyone would went over and tested 4g on them, nothing...tried the og epic and without a problem it connected. I told the tech and he pulled out his e4gt and same thing...nothing so I called tech support today and told them and they startdd a ticket saying they would have a tech check it out...i later called and the tech said "oh there's an outage in your area" but I don't know because Sprint employees aren't always very consistent. I think it might have to do with our dual band but I did ##data# and changed the realm to clearwire.wmx.net and connected to 4g like nothing but when i set it to sprintpcs.com it disconnects so I am beyond confused

Update:
As of this AM, my 4G is still toast. However, on my way from Ontario, CA to LAX, my phone locked into a 4G signal around the Downey area (105 fwy). I figure this issue isn't due to my phone crapping out on me. So I placed another call into tech support and they just confirmed with me that the towers around my area are down and they apparently have engineers working on getting them back up. ETA for a fix is 6PM tomorrow. 3/11.
I guess I'll have to wait and see...

I live in SE TX near Galveston island but im on mainland. I have 4G where I live even though it's not included in the coverage map. I usually get 1 bar inside my house and it works fairly well. Occassionally my 4G will not connect no matter what I do. It goes out for several hours and will start connecting again by early morning. It has done this several times but I really can't complain because according to Sprint, WiMax isn't supposed to be available in my city. But anyways this seems to be caused by either maintanance/upgrades or possibly cloud coverage/solar interference. It always works again after a few hours of downtime. This is my experience.

I'm in San Bernardino about 20 minutes from you. My 4g has been completely gone for the last 2 days as well. At my house near Cal State, it's been perfect since June 4, 2010 (original evo release date) and only now has it ever gone out like this. Very frustrating as I rely on it a lot since the 3g at my house is virtually non-existent. Shoot me a PM if you get a signal or hear anything from sprint. Thanks.

Virtually no service after root

I got my phone the day after launch (delay on pre-orders) and enjoy it so far. I'm coming from an HTC Evo 4g, which I loved, but it's 2 years old, so it was time to move on. The first few days, the GS3 was great. Good service, even in hard to find service areas. I recently rooted it with CWM and the super user thing. I wanted wifi tether while at work, like I did with my Evo for the last year. After root, everything seemed fine at my house. I noticed when I got to work though, there was no service. Not uncommon for my building, but usually it's spotty throughout. I then noticed the time and date were 3 days off on my phones display. I found it odd that it hadn't updated this all day at work. I drove home thinking the root messed something up, as I'd seen other posts about no service after rooting the phone. When I got to my home town, my service came back. I thought I was in the clear. Today on the way to work, same spot, I lose service, and it didn't come back until I made it back to my home town at the end of the day. I understand service may not be great in some areas, even though I had fine service with my evo, but to lose service in all but like 3 towns, virtually makes my cell phone useless to me. What is going on? Was it a bad root? Can I undo this? I didn't backup my rom, because I actually rooted it during a recovery process with a bad firmware upload. I can understand if I lost service all together, that it may have been a bad root, but this seems to be a different case.
How can I remedy this?
Thanks!
Simply rooting shouldn't have any effect on your signal. I have the Sprint version, and rooted less than 48 hours after I got it. I didn't notice a change in signal strength at all. It's still been about as good (maybe slightly better, especially for actual data performance) as my SGS II on Sprint.
Sprint is doing a lot of network upgrades at the moment, so that could possibly be the cause. What city are you in?
Rooting should have no adverse effects on signal.

I live in Salem (about 20 minutes north of Boston), and drive through Beverly on the way to work. By the time I leave Beverly into Hamilton, signal is gone. All through Topsfield, and Ipswich. My girlfriend, and other people I know on the sprint network, do not have this issue. I thought it might be the network upgrades, but wouldn't it affect all sprint users? Even my father, in the same area, on the same plan, has signal.
Sorry for the double post. Is there any apps or settings I can use to enhance the tx/rx power of the phone? Or maybe change the frequentcy the phone updates the signal status?
