Does anyone know if you could modify the housing on the Epic Touch 4G to a different color, and if so where do I buy parts?.. Thanks is advance.
you mean something like this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305414
I wouldn't use regular paint, rustoleum makes vinyl and fabric paint that will permantly dye the plastic another color. no buildup and it wont look like it was spray painted.
just try it on small section of the inside of the battery cover first.
A lot of autopart stores should carry it for car interiors also probably walmart

Wasn't really sure where to put this so apologies if this is in the wrong place. Was looking at my S8500 Wave and thinking about customizing it externally. Having already voided the warranty a few times I don't mind doing this to mine (WARNING: if you do remove the case it auto voids the warranty)
This would involve spraying the case a different colour to give it a fresh look as I have a fair few scratches and marks. I will also look into seeing whether the diamond home button can be flattened down for a more streamlined effect and also spraying the top and bottom black sections a different colour
Let's start putting ideas together of further mods we could make and once I have modded mine I will upload the pictures
Update 1:
Hand sanded off the battery case logo to ensure a smoother phone look, need to finish sanding down the rest of the battery panel to strip it of paint, then sand down the rest of the casing.
Now I can post links, here's a picture of the battery cover with it's logo sanded off, haven't quite finished the rest of the sanding
http://www.freeimagehosting.net/t/86ca7.jpg
Update 2:
After sanding off the red paint, have decided to sand down the case fully to bare aluminium, have polished up but not got the best finish yet, will upload pictures in a bit
instead of getting it painted get it powder coated.
if dont know google for it!....lol
will look much better!
was going to use spray paint but I will look into powder painting
Good work! What color are you going to use?

was probably going to go with a shade of red, a darkish one maybe more burgundy and see what it turns out like
lamborghani style
lol
i would have gone with the race car color.....something like Matt black( as it wont catch fingerprints) with yellow strips!!!
you can just let your imagination fly

hmm true, well can always be repainted like, sand it back off and redo it

This looks funny...
Best Regards
Spray painted it after preparing it, was okay for roughly two days then peeled back off, might just sand it off and leave it as the bare aluminium casing
did you spray painted on bare almunium?
if yes the you did wrong, first you have to apply primer or a bonding agent so that the paint should not peel off....and after that you must put it in oven to dry it off!!
al,unium is not the best material to be spray painted on!....lol
Did put primer on but left to air dry, may retry with an oven
primer can be air dried but after applying paint it should be heat dried....lol
u can also try drying the primer in oven it would be even better..!
by the way which paint are you using?
if all fails you can ask any local painter in your town to tell you how to paint aluminum!.....lol

Any one know of a paint to use on the plastics? needs repainting black
I have this phone in black. I am interested in looking into "coloring" it. I would use a plastic based spraypaint for the battery cover, but I have no idea in what direction to go in for coloring the rest of the phone. I would be interested in making the sides a color very similar to the silver on the S3 and the front to be white. I know that I essentially just described the white variant of the S2, but what would be beautiful is that the samsung logo would no longer be visible and you would not see the buttons. Any ideas comments or concerns?
Most paints will scratch easily but if you have an airbrush they do have metalizer paints which do look similar to the chrome look your looking for

Im not extremely worried about scratching because i do not drop it much. Also, if i noticed it scratching easily in my pocket or whatever i could always re paint it and put an invisible shield on it

Lol if you want to take spray pain to your phone go right ahead.. i can see a sprint tech already not wanting to work on it since its painted lol.. would look pretty nice though if it went smoothly.. but if painting it y go with somthin similar to whats already out? Might as well try to get an exchange for a white one lol

I did something extremely similar to my Hero CDMA back before I got this phone and it went pretty smoothly(Can attach pics if requested) and Sprint had no problem repairing it when my End button went dead. I do not wanna spray paint the front of this phone however because it is covered by glass which the Hero was not.
I remember a thread earlier in the year where someone painted the battery door for a brushed silver look, though I couldn't find it. If my memory serves he had to wet sand with a super fine grit sand paper. I think it's not a bad idea to find a way to repaint in custom colors, or at least a variation not seen on phones. Interested in what you find out about this topic.
Yes I also saw the one about the battery door. He used sandpaper and chapstick haha. I was interested in doing a gunmetal silver also. I'm not usually a guy for color. I like simple variants of white and black on phones. I do know how to fix up the battery door as it is a separate part and it seems pretty easy, but I have no idea where to start with the shell and front. The shell might be decently easy once I disassemble if I use a non-water based paint made for light metals, but the front has me stumped. How can I get to it when it is covered by glass. I know the simple solution is to remove the glass, but after that does it go back on?
You could experiment with vinyl rather than paint on the front. I have ordered from metrorestyling.com before and they shipped fast.
I could use that on the sides too. Thank you so much for that.
Ok everyone this will be my first mod-accessory, for a mobile device and i am looking for some input. I want the best of both of these two cases and am pretty sure that the end result will be some kick arsenic case loved by most people. Check my video out it says all I am trying to do. http://youtu.be/DZOKjY2YMzg
Fix your audio, get prepared, get to the point and try again. Oh and gorilla glue? Couldn't tell what you wanted to use it for, but not a good idea. It expands.

I am wanting some input on how to go about using the inner top portion on the power-skin replacing the same area on the powerskin with the d3o portion. I know gorilla glue expands but nothing a razor blade can't fix after it cures.
Too many ideas, can you narrow it down?
Hard plastic kept or not?
Can hard plastic be removed if needed?
Room under the top section for an additional layer? Snug or decent room
Let's talk glue again. Wouldn't something that remains flexible be preferred?

Yeah I was thinking about losing the hard white plastic of the d3o and using the inner flexible black part. Right about the glue now that I think about it, will need some flexibility-any ideas on type of adhesive? I am thinking with the addition of the inner layer and losing the back phone coverage it will be comfortable in fit.

okay
Cut off half of old and put on top of newer one. Issue looks dumb and unfinished. Use some type of cord to clean up the edge. Still may look bad and by removing hard plastic look nasty due to glue remains. Due to shown cracks, it's not likely you can use as hard case on top of new rubber.
Under newer one instead. Issue, it would look and feel off I think because of hump added. Maybe not sure due to hump caused by battery? Could be similar.
Fix cut old one slightly bigger than new hole. Glue edges only. Issue bump created around current lip from New hole.
Fix cut same size as new hole add inner layer such as felt. Glue piece to felt, felt to new inside part. If cut well and placed well, old piece fills void reduces lip. Issue of bad cut, looks bad. Cut slightly larger than hole and slowly trim to fit. Try to get edges to squash well together. Still may have nasty glue remains from removal of hard plastic. Fix may be tough to do and look off. Keep plastic attached, Trim both plastic and rubber to shape of hole and fit in hole. Use felt again as backer.
Eliminate felt use, trim plastic to hole, trim rubber slightly bigger. Glue old rubber to plastic and edges of old rubber to inside of new hole. Essentially, use old rubber as backer instead of felt. May still cause that hump around edge of new hole.
Fill hole with old piece as described above eliminate felt use, plastic if desired, and over size of old rubber. Create complete new back instead to glue piece to. Then glue this new back to the back of new case. This will cover up the old glue remains, bad possible cutting and lip issues. Tricky part, what to use for new back.
What's the inside of old case look like? Could it be used to create new back layer? If not sure where I am going, look at the back of a ballistic case.
Glue depends on decided application. If new back than semi rigid glue would work well. They have super glue that stays flexible. Rubber cement too flexible I think.
What would you suggest be my line of going forward? Cut the lip and buttons off the d3o

Tough to say without being there and knowing the actual layout. Your video just made it to hard to see. Since the plastic is borked and underneath may be glued, you may want to hit up one of the mall vestibules and see if you can find some knock off cover that works to your needs.
Yeah I will probably grab some cheap cases similar & do some mock ups to get a feel for what it will be like. I'll post some pictures of my progress.

Hi everyone, hoping for some advice. I wanted to make an all-black housing. Painting it would mean that any scratches reveal the original color, so I was looking for something more permanent. I had success in dyeing my extended battery cover and a few other plastic things in this run (ie analog sticks for my PS3), however, after soaking for over 15 hours my housing is not retaining much of the color.
I boiled the water, added the dye and salt (after vinegar failed), and removed the other parts after a few hours - looked great. The housing however, seems to still be pretty darn close to the original. I imagine it is due to the gloss-like coating on it. Any advice on how to get it to take the black? Should I sand the surface? I am worried the texture won't be as nice.
I used the powder-based dye, not the liquid, but from what I was reading it shouldn't matter. I tried locating black housings on ebay, but it seems everything is the silver color only.
Thanks!
The housing is painted. The threads with people that have repainted theirs show pictures of them sanding off the paint.
So you'd need to sand it down to get the dye to penetrate. And since it'll be impossible to sand inside the dimples in the back, they'll still be silver.
Via a screen, digitizer, and battery cover swap, is it theoretically possible to change the color of your phone? Would that change all of the exposed plastic bits?
Please note, I'm not asking if this is a stupid thing to do or not.

Mercury color screen protector +
battery cover color from ebay or buy the housing online and spray paint it yourself.

It is possible BUT on most phones you know how the adhesive on the digitizer is just along the edges of the glass? Well, samsung decided they would fuze the LCD to the digitizer and then coat the ENTIRE back with adhesive rather then just the edges. The Digi/LCD is then secured to the bezel/trim piece. They can be seperated, but unless you know what your doing, your almost guaranteed to ruin your digitizer. There are some screen replacement videos online. I suggest taking a look to get a better understanding of what I mean.
You can buy the full front preassembled for 280-320 which consists of the colored digitizer, LCD and trim piece. Simple swap. Remove a few screws swap some internals to the new front and your good, but its a little pricey just to change from white,"blurple" or red to one of the other 2.
If it wasn't such a hassle, I would've removed the digi/LCD so I could replace the ugly purple trim piece alooong time ago. Still thinking about it actually... :banghead:
