Customising S8500 externally - Bada Software and Hacking General

Wasn't really sure where to put this so apologies if this is in the wrong place. Was looking at my S8500 Wave and thinking about customizing it externally. Having already voided the warranty a few times I don't mind doing this to mine (WARNING: if you do remove the case it auto voids the warranty)
This would involve spraying the case a different colour to give it a fresh look as I have a fair few scratches and marks. I will also look into seeing whether the diamond home button can be flattened down for a more streamlined effect and also spraying the top and bottom black sections a different colour
Let's start putting ideas together of further mods we could make and once I have modded mine I will upload the pictures
Update 1:
Hand sanded off the battery case logo to ensure a smoother phone look, need to finish sanding down the rest of the battery panel to strip it of paint, then sand down the rest of the casing.
Now I can post links, here's a picture of the battery cover with it's logo sanded off, haven't quite finished the rest of the sanding
http://www.freeimagehosting.net/t/86ca7.jpg
Update 2:
After sanding off the red paint, have decided to sand down the case fully to bare aluminium, have polished up but not got the best finish yet, will upload pictures in a bit

instead of getting it painted get it powder coated.
if dont know google for it!....lol
will look much better!

was going to use spray paint but I will look into powder painting

was probably going to go with a shade of red, a darkish one maybe more burgundy and see what it turns out like

lamborghani style
lol
i would have gone with the race car color.....something like Matt black( as it wont catch fingerprints) with yellow strips!!!
you can just let your imagination fly

hmm true, well can always be repainted like, sand it back off and redo it

This looks funny...
Best Regards

Spray painted it after preparing it, was okay for roughly two days then peeled back off, might just sand it off and leave it as the bare aluminium casing

did you spray painted on bare almunium?
if yes the you did wrong, first you have to apply primer or a bonding agent so that the paint should not peel off....and after that you must put it in oven to dry it off!!
al,unium is not the best material to be spray painted on!....lol

Did put primer on but left to air dry, may retry with an oven

primer can be air dried but after applying paint it should be heat dried....lol
u can also try drying the primer in oven it would be even better..!
by the way which paint are you using?
if all fails you can ask any local painter in your town to tell you how to paint aluminum!.....lol

Any one know of a paint to use on the plastics? needs repainting black

One of a kind Full Body Case (1 Piece Skin)

So i just made myself the first? full body skin that covers everything from the back right up to the screen edge.
I made myself a "pr0totype" first to see if it would even work.
First attempt = Blue skin
Second and final attempt = Grey skin
What do you guys think?
It took me about 30minutes to do it.
I didnt use a knife to cut around the screen or camera.. i just used my thumb nail. silded it up and down the gap until it cut the vinyl.
For the speaker i used a knife to make a slit in both the holes.. then lifed the middle part up with a tweezer and cut the vinyl on both sides.
for the two ports i made a hole.. cut the excess off and put both, usb and headjack in to make it stick to the sides better.
as for the mic.. i used a needle to pierc the vinyl then lifed it up and cut the excess off.
oh also when i applied it, i heated it up with my fan heater and stretched it around the phone bit by bit while heating it up when needed... had to make sure there was no creases on the bezel because it would of just collected dust/ peeled off after awhile.
PS: I never remove my battery or sim
awesome.. would love to wrap my phone but never done it before. got any extra white vinyl u'd like to send me? hah
I got like 1 mile of different types of vinyl lol.
Its quite easy if you take your time. The best thing is that you can peel it off, heat it back up and reapply if you made any type of mistake... like creases or air bubbles.
Im pretty sure you can get small bits of vinyl from material shops. At first i used a thin type of vinyl.. I then tried a thicker type and found it much better... easier to cut since its not as flexible

is there a specific brand thats widely distributed that i could get in the US that you recommend? not sure where i could buy a small sheet of vinyl. also, is a blow dryer hot enough to heat up the vinyl?
Well its my Dad thats the expert. He uses http://apaspa.com
I live in the UK so i wouldnt know any places you could go other then material shops.
I dont know if apaspa sells small rolls.
When my Dad comes back ill ask him what type of vinyl it is.. All i know is that you shouldnt use banner vinyl because its very thin and flimsy.
Blow dryer should be fine.. just heat it up untill you can stretch it a little(like 1cm)... then place it down on the back of the phone while still holding it tight and mold it.. heat it up again if needed.
If you do get a small piece then i suggest you test it with small squares until you think you're ready

wont it leave a lot of goop on your phone if u decide to remove the vinyl down the line?
depends.. If you buy cheap vinyl then most likely yes... but i dont think the cheap vinly would even work.. because it has to be stretched quite abit around the edges.
Im 100% sure it wont leave the phone sticky when you remove it IF you dont use the cheap vinyl.
If you're unsure of what vinyl you buy.. just stick it on something that has the same surface and leave it on there for a week or two... heat it up and cool it down a couple of times too.. for "real world use" then peel it off and see the results.
Edit:
Im probably going to change the color every now and then.. so i will post more pictures when i do... a week or two.
looks great!
but honestly tho, what IF you have to do a battery pull... example, ive been having kernel issues that is making me do battery pulls... what if you have an app that just freezes and your phone stops responding, requiring a battery pull.... just playing devils advocate here thats all
never happened to me... but if it did then id just remove it lol
Looks very sleak! Actually thinking about making a green one .
Questions:
How hot does it need to be so you can modify it?
(Thinking if it would change if the gnexus got very hot)
Does it break on removal?
How do the corners of it react to prolonged in/out of the pocket?
How thick is such a sheet?
Do you think it will work as protector when dropping the phone?

The Nexus doesnt get got enough to change it. Even if you put it in front of a heater it wouldnt change since the vinyl is already applied to the phone
Yes it will. You have to pick at it and use a bit of force to pull it off. Once its off it will be deformed. Plus it wont stick back on properly.
its like you dont even have it on the phone.. it slips in and out like normal.
Its like as thin as paper but is more flexible and is more tougher
Its only to protech it from scratches really.. but if you do drop it, it will give better protection then if you had nothing on it at all.... by protection i mean scratch protection.
Looks like a giant phone condom
What shape/size was the piece you started with, in order to get no extra material at the corners after you folded it over the bezel?

it doesnt really matter. I cut the extra vinyl off with my nail. There is no way to make an exact piece that goes all the way around the phone and have no extra vinyl left over without cutting it off.
woah that looks awesome though! as long as you don't play with software when you have it on, shouldn't cause any problems. overheating doesn't seem to be an issue right?

[Q]Would a chrome back plate work?

Hey people
I saw this video on YouTube, and I wondered if it would be possible with our Plays.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHRhwvgZn3o
(For some reason, YouTube tags aren't working)
I do not have much experience with spray-painting, so I would appreciate some help. And I would like to know, do we need a base layer, because our back cover already has a glossy black (or white, blue, orange) look.
Thank you for your help.
Ridder
I would start off with carefully removing the Sony Ericsson logo with a sharp blade( lift it in a corner and tilt it up carefully. put this on a piece of waxpaper and keep it safe.
Then clean the cover with alcohol to give you a clean surface and wash with soap and water. Start with the finest P-grit sandpaper you can find(or even better very light sandblasting) sand it very lightly, be very careful around edges, else you will notch it.. You just want to give the plastic a uniform roughness for the paint to hug to. Do not oversand it. Keep your hands clean, and preferably as dry and free from oil as you can.
Place your cover in a wind and dust free area, and attach it to an elevated piece of wood or whatever you can find, with some tack underneath. then start your first coat, evenly applying it over the entire surface.
Remember rather too little than too much. You can rather apply 10 light coats than one dripping coat. Lightly build up the coats, giving the paint ample time to dry properly between each coat. Keep going until you get to 5 or 6. You should now notice it starting to give you a gloss appearance. Despite being tempted, do not touch it. After the last coat has dried, finish off with two or three coats of clear(allowing drying in between)
You should now have a lasting(if you are careful) durable chrome finish. Attach the Sony Ericsson logo sticker, and you're good to go I think I might give mine a matt black finish next, as the phone is very slippery when clean. Post a pic if you go through with it!

[Q] Cleaning the Leather Back?

Alright so I'm sure everyone who has the leather back and has not put a cover on it yet can see that the leather back is getting dirty.
It might be just me but i have the brown leather back. The stitches have gotten blackish and not white like they were in the beginning and the back just keeps getting a darker shade!
Any of you guys try to clean it? If so how'd you do it?
Is it okay to take the back off and clean it under water?
Or should i use windex.
I don't wanna ruin the leather attempting to clean it!

DO NOT USE WINDEX OR RUN WATER. That will ABSOLUTELY ruin your leather.
I bought a cheap bottle of leather treatment from CVS for about $6. You spray two coats on it, and you're good to go. It actually gave the leather a nice, grippy-er, feel. And it helps protect from wetness. After that, you should be able to use any type of leather cleaner to keep it looking fresh.

Quoted for emphasis. Definitely a very good thing that the OP asked.
I use Meguiar's Gold Class Rich Leather Aloe Cleaner followed by Meguiar's Gold Class Rich Leather Aloe Conditioner. Yes, I do my own auto detailing, and yes, I hate it when people use cleaners inappropriately and screw up whatever they were trying to clean. My parents are seriously guilty of that and it left me with cleaning-related faux-PTSD flashbacks decades later.
The G4's back wasn't shiny from the factory, but certain cleaners will produce a slight matte sheen on the leather.

Yes, it will keep your leather back looking mostly new. Most importantly it will protect against getting wet, which will stain your leather.
Any kind of leather treatment that adds a "shine" is no good in my eyes. I have had a few european luxury cars and i can tell you this...best thing i have ever used to clean my seats and other areas has been...BABYWIPES!!
Seriously it does not take away from the natural state or satin look of the leather and actually clean it very well. If it good enough for your babys ass.....its good enough for the skin on your phone!
You dont have to take my word for it though.
BTW got it wet today. there was a slight dark spot for a fe minutes but went away fully

These kinds of products are unavailable outside the US so we need alternatives.
What do you make of the advice given in this video ?
House hold items available in any country.
white vinegar to clean
shaving foam to remove ink stains
corn starch to remove grease
From the user manual
This product is made of cattle hide and may have different creases and patterns due to the properties of natural leather. If the product gets wet with any liquid (water, soda, seawater, rain, sweat, sunscreen, cosmetics, moisture, etc.), it may lose colour, change colour, or deform in shape.
When this product gets wet or contaminated, get rid of the water by pressing it gently with a dry towel, or wipe it with leather cream and leave it to dry in shade. When the product is exposed to a wet environment for a long time, it may cause creases or mould. The shape of the leather may not be restored to its original state after cleaning because of the properties of leather, and any contamination or deformity may get worse when using regular detergent or an organic solvent.
When the leather is wet with rain or sweat, use caution and avoid contact with clothes. It can cause any dye to become a stain.
Due to the nature of leather, friction for long periods of time or excessive force may damage the surface of the leather.

I don't know how I feel about the advice in the video. Those suggestions are very common, but I haven't tried them personally. People have conflicting things to say about the extreme acidity of vinegar against the mild acidity of leather, which is why you need to dilute the vinegar in the first place. One alternate suggestion I've read is to use Woolite 10:1 to 6:1 (water:Woolite). Another I've read is Dove soap. Don't use saddle soap, which has a pH level way too basic for leather cleaning.
What I can say is that you should use a soft terry or microfiber cloth to apply the cleaning solution, then wipe it off with a dry cloth. Don't apply a solution directly to the leather and don't apply too much at once. Even the moisture from a water-dampened cloth isn't the worst thing in the world if you're just quickly wiping on and off. Just don't soak the leather in anything, like running it under a stream of water. It's too porous to not absorb it. Once it's clean, condition it so you have some kind of protection from future stains.
As clichéd as this sounds, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I'm not a super clean freak, but I try to keep my hands clean when I handle the G4. I don't touch the back of it while eating and I try to keep it away from beverages. However, I'm planning to get a plastic back for the G4 as my regular back cover and only use the leather occasionally.

Bingo! thats is the conclusion i'm reaching too. The idea of leather is fantastic but if you want to look good then be prepared to put in the work.
Leather is just not that practical for day to day in a phone usage scenario..
But it looks so good <sigh>
One of the things I've learned in both buffing/polishing and interior detailing is to not work too large of a surface area at once. You don't want to let a product set or dry before you can work on it. The product ends up being harder to remove and/or stains your surface.
When it comes to patina, the issue for me is that the leather surface is small, so any marks will be more visible. I look at my travel wallet, which I haven't used much, and I'm annoyed that there is wear on one of its corners and the color has rubbed off. I'm far less concerned about a scuff on the seat in my car. Still, I don't own any leather furniture because of the upkeep required.
There are photos one of the Android Central staff posted of a used brown leather Moto X. I don't think it looks bad, and if it came that way out of the box, I don't think anyone would have thought it was dirty. If you're like me though, you like keeping things looking like new. I'm getting better about conditioning or protecting new leather products before wearing them or breaking them in.
The black leather G4 cover would be much more forgiving with stains, but aside from lack of carrier availability, I only would have preferred that version if it had contrasting stitching.
Can someone point me in the right direction? I'm a complete noob at this and have no idea where to start. I was thinking of getting the leather honey conditioner from Amazon, but still wasn't sure if that would be appropriate. No clue where to begin on cleaners. I have the black leather back btw

I've had a bottle of Leather Honey since about 2000 (before they changed the name), and that's what I used on my leather back. It didn't darken the tan leather (unfortunately), though it did make it a bit sticky for a bit. If you go this route, apply it sparingly before going to bed.
Since this is a thread about cleaning, I feel obligated to mention that product is for protecting leather only, although I believe the same company makes a cleaning product as well.

Painting the htc 10??

Hi all,
Have had my 10 since release day have had it in a case and screen protector since day one, both expensive ones too, tempered and a tech 21, now the tech 21 allowed a little bit of grit to get underneath the case and through pressure from my pocket or handling, the grit has etched a small scratch from the gun metal paint on the back at the top of the phone. I've now got a phantomskinz skin on it so it's covered but I wondered if anyone has ever matched the paint colour and type and attempted to either spray or touch up a mark?
There is no dents, literally just a chip from the paint, really annoyed me, tech 21 have been superb for me in the past.
I also have a friend who has dropped his literally the day he thought he didn't need a case and has a few scratches on the back, it was actually him who suggested painting it, at first I thought no way but thought I'd ask on here just in case anyone has ever committed to trying to paint their phone, htc 10 or not and how did you get along?
I'm sure we're not alone in having the odd scratch or two on our shiney htc 10s.
Any thoughts? Places who may do the job or what the colour or paint type is specifically? Is it treated? With what?,
Cheers [emoji106]

Aye, they'd look a lot better if we could just touch them up when they took a knock.
You could theoretically paint these all-metal phones pretty easily. You would, however, need to completely disassemble the phone to get just the back shell (in this case specifically) so that you could begin prep work on it for paint/powder coating.
You would first use a high grit sanding on it to rough the surface up for adhesion. Then you either:
a)apply paint
b)begin process of powder coat
Too much effort, in all honesty, for this device though. I've watched a fair number of tear down videos, and the 10 looks to be as bad, if not worse, than the M8/M9 to take apart. I have to replace my screen on my M8, to keep it for my new burner device, so I may take it entirely apart and paint it electric blue by hand. Either that, or do a high polish on it, and get it shiny.

I wouldn't take the device apart to be honest. I think if the paint was matched a small brush could cover the scratches.

That's what I mean, it's the tiny blemishes that are the easiest to cover up but still annoying, if you get a scratch on your car you can get it resprayed or touched up same with paint on walls at home or pretty much anything I'm surprised that a service like this doesn't already exist.

The OP mentioned using one already. Skins are basically stickers that'll fade and peel over time and the corners will start to lift in cases where you don't apply perfectly, like a screen protector.
To the OP, may sound silly but some car paint shops have machines that match a materials color down to the H/S/V and can supply touchup paint. Have you looked into that?

To the OP, may sound silly but some car paint shops have machines that match a materials color down to the H/S/V and can supply touchup paint. Have you looked into that?

I haven't mate, but I have to say I agree, ultimately something on a smaller scale would be ideal.
Have been quite busy these last few days but will be actively looking into it next week and may even price up some paint if I can match up the colour and type, I have a friend who does custom jobs (cars) so he may know more. Will let you guys know if I find anything worth mentioning.
Cheers for the idea.

I have a phantom skinz skin, which is solid and really stuck on there, looks great but defeats the object when you know there are blemishes or scratches underneath, if you were to resell the phone, a few scratches could really impact the price.

Im mad with Xiaomi ?

I didnt expext that from the premium series of Xiaomi. This happened without droping or hitting. It happens from my jeans pocket. The paint went off. Any tricks to permantly fix it-paint it?
Quite sad to see the paint chipped away. Hope the Aluminium frame is an anodised black coating on a 7000 series aluminium. Ideally it would not come off that easy . Do you have warranty? Check with Xiaomi first, if not, you need to do a delicate paint touch up.
Just use cover
You can always use cover to hide the dent..

I would suggest any good quality matt Black spray paint can, Try to cover all the phone and just let the scrapped area exposed, Try to spray it on any other metal surface before doing on the phone and check for its color match. I Can assume, how bad it could look with that patch of paint scrap, try this out, if you are not satisfied with the results, you can anytime undo it by removing the paint before it is fully dried.
