Via a screen, digitizer, and battery cover swap, is it theoretically possible to change the color of your phone? Would that change all of the exposed plastic bits?
Please note, I'm not asking if this is a stupid thing to do or not.

It is possible BUT on most phones you know how the adhesive on the digitizer is just along the edges of the glass? Well, samsung decided they would fuze the LCD to the digitizer and then coat the ENTIRE back with adhesive rather then just the edges. The Digi/LCD is then secured to the bezel/trim piece. They can be seperated, but unless you know what your doing, your almost guaranteed to ruin your digitizer. There are some screen replacement videos online. I suggest taking a look to get a better understanding of what I mean.
You can buy the full front preassembled for 280-320 which consists of the colored digitizer, LCD and trim piece. Simple swap. Remove a few screws swap some internals to the new front and your good, but its a little pricey just to change from white,"blurple" or red to one of the other 2.
If it wasn't such a hassle, I would've removed the digi/LCD so I could replace the ugly purple trim piece alooong time ago. Still thinking about it actually... :banghead:

I just dropped my Xperia Play and the front glass cracked. I was going to buy a new housing case on ebay but now I'm confused about what I actually need and how to repair it.
This is the item I saw on ebay (Full housing case). Judging by the pics it seemed to me that the front cover comes with a glass already?, but then another search gave me the result for a touch screen digitizer (Touch Screen Digitizer).
Are there 2 different glasses on the Xperia Play? or what's the purpose of the glass appearing on the first link?
Then I found this manual (Installing-Sony-Xperia-Play-Digitizer/7593/4) where they say we need to use a heat gun to remove the glass from the frame. Is that heat gun really required and do we need to glue the glass back to the frame? Any idea which glue could I use for that?

I think I'm right on this, the housing is just that, the housing. The "glass thats on there is only meant to protect the digitizer. which is the thing that reads where your fingers are.
I understand even less now. I've been scratching my broken glass to see if what I had broken was the glass that appears to be part of the housing in the 1st link or the digitizer, and I'd say that it's the digitizer and there's no any other kind of glass that belongs to the frame!
I'm starting to think that the 1st picture on ebay is kind of misleading and that glass that appears there doesn't really exist?
I'd like to know where I can get the glue also.

I sold a touch screen digitizer some time ago on eBay. I have seen them for around $30 and yes from what I have seen the housing is just the bordering around Tue touch screen digitizer. I would try searching eBay for that. The one I had I bought from hing Kong and it worked jsmust fine.

Be advised the digitizer is glued to the screen bordering. I do not know what glue it is. Sorry.

So I've barely had my first android phone for a week and its already slipped out of my hands and into hard concrete. The result is that I have some ugly dents on the silver ring that surrounds the phone. I have the marble white version, Any idea if I can find a replacement for it? Either I'm putting in the wrong search terms or I there are none available on the internet. I'm feeling really bad right about now

I cant help with the bezel but I can HIGH recommend you two buying a case since you have already dropped and dented the phone... Preferably a TPU one that will cover all edges.

pretty sure there aren't any until a Chinese knockoff reseller (cnn.cn or etc) makes one. even at that, you'd have to take apart the phone.

A guy made an almost complete video showing how to disassemble the device. I'm saying almost because at the end he explains the screen is heat sealed with the frame (the one you found on eBay) :

You need to un-seal the two parts with heat.
So to resume, changing the bezel is as complex as changing the screen, or even more complex since you can buy screens already sealed with frames (but I suppose you don't want to pay 300$ just for bezel replacement ). Meaning this is surely the most complex piece replacement on the Galaxy S III ...

You mean the ones that dont cover the entire edges?
My point exactly. Thats why I recommend a TPU case.
Also the case will cover the dent and you dont have to worry about it anymore.
No point disassembling the entire phone and probably voiding your warranty for a dent.

Guys, Nonepse is right about how complex of a job changing the bezel (it's actually the phone's frame) is. The same guy did a video on how to take part the frame/bezel that the LCD is stuck on with adhesive. It is NOT a pretty sight.

I got at least a nick here and there when i dropped my phone when i first got it. Got the same thing on my white Metro S3. Was looking into replacing the bezel/ frame until I saw that video. Just not worth it IMO.

Looks like a UAG case in white.
guys the truth is that its imposible to change only the bezel of the phone. why? because its imposible to remove the LCD withou braking it. the bezel is only $30 but if you brake the LCD (AMOLED) Screen its about $300 so just use a case.
when i bought my s3 it was black, and some of my friends drop it and the screen (gorilla cracked), i decided to buy the whole front part of the phone. i decided to change the color so now my S3 is Titanium 100%.

I've had a white and now I have a grey one. On both of them I used some 220 grit sand paper and carefully sanded the cheap silver plastic off revealing a beautiful soft touch black plastic looks especially good on a white phone. I'll put some pictures of you want

Has anyone had to replace their screen? If so, where did you buy your screen from? I have been looking on eBay and have found decent prices. I just worry about buying stuff from China / Hong Kong that might not work. If you have replaced your screen, or you know a place that sells reputable parts, please let me know!!!

I bought a very cheap Galaxy Note 10.1 with a cracked glass at eBay. At the same time I bought a replacement glass also at eBay.
When I received the tablet I noticed there was really no need to replace the glass since the crack was outside the viewing area and didn't affected at all visibility or touch.
Even so, I decided to change the glass because the tablet was white and the glass I ordered was black and I find it much better for watching movies and also the white border tends to darken the colours when using a paint program. (so now my tablet is unique: black in the front, white in the back
The Note is very easy to disassemble if you have the adequate tools for opening plastic cases. It is very modular so it is all a matter of removing connectors and taking pieces out. Finally you have the front case and the glass and here is the difficult thing because the glass is glued to the case so you have to apply heat with a heat gun on low or a hair dryer on high until the glue becomes soft and easy to separate. even so, I broke my old glass even more when trying to remove it. It may be Gorilla glass, very resistant to scratches, but it is thin as hell, very fragile.
Placing the new glass was much easier. It comes with glue and screen protectors on both sides.
My only concern was the original glass had a thin layer of dark grey EVA all around the screen that I suppose is for cushioning the gap between the glass and the LCD and the replacement glass didn't have it. But I haven't had any problem with the new glass and apparently, all the replacement glasses I've seen don't have this EVA layer. Tactile detection is perfect, just like the original.

Hey sorry i know this thread been dead for over a year but i just smashed my note 10.1 2012 glass and found some on online for ~15 bucks. The one i found is for Model gt-n8010 and mine is gt-n8013. My question is will the glass fit/work on my n8013 if the description says 8010. Thx in advance

Yes it should work fine. I just replaced mine and the description for the part said, for GT-N 8000 covering Gt-N 8010, 8013 etc. The part worked great.

The same glass will work for models 8000, 8010 and 8013. The difference between them is the 3G connectivity so it doesn't affect the glass design (it could have not been necessarily the case, but it does. A good example of not taking anything for granted is the Galaxy S3 where the screen bezel is different from 3G to 4G version)

Here have a thumbs up! Do I need special tools is there a kit I can buy? I've done this before but on other devices and it was a while ago I just don't want to damage/scratch the body. It's only the screen that's shattered. If there is a kit can u point me in the right direction?

In ifixit there is a very good tear-down of the Galaxy Note 10.1 where you can clearly see the process for opening the tablet and accessing the glass:

Basically you remove the silver piece where the camera is, then the back plate, and then you begin to remove components (battery, motherboard, speakers, cameras, docking port, audio jack, etc) until you have just the frame, the glass and the LCD. Then you have to break some plastic fasteners to get loose the metal frame and release the LCD. At that point you have the silver plastic bezel with the glass attached to it. Applying heat with a hair-dryer to loosen the glue, remove the broken glass and then apply the new one. Then follow the reverse process to get everything inside again.
You can test the tablet with just the glass, LCD, motherboard and battery to check the screen is working OK. Then disconnect the battery again and put back the rest of the components. Another check before closing the back plate and there you go.
As for tools, you will need a screwdriver for the screws, a guitar prick for the back plate and some flat plastic tool to release the internal connectors. You can see the tools in the pictures of the tear-down.
One last thing: make sure the glass you order includes the touch sensor. The glass alone is of no use (still there are people who sell it)

Does anyone know where to find a front bezel? I did see the one from parts4all or whatever its called overseas with shipping as much as it costs and god knows when it would arrive- I cannot seem to find any.
I was attempting to replace the glass on an s3 and in the process separated the very thin tinted glass sheet that sits on top of the lcd. It has a flex cable that wraps around the LCD and plugs into a port on the backside. The LCD somehow remained unscathed and still dimly lights up but I want to replace that film so it looks right. I havent, for the life of me, been able to find this part.
Does anyone have an idea what it is or where I can find it? Im guessing it is the actual digitizer, or maybe some kind of polarizing film??
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Can't replace it. If you did not purchase the glass and digitizer all together. You have that glue to lay the glass down and that's it. But it will never look right and forget trying to see the screen out in daylight. The right way is to replace it all, once you separate the glass from digitizer it won't be ever be the same.

Have never had much luck replacing the digitizer only, mainly due to the fact that the LCD is bonded to the digitizer and by replacing the digitizer only I have found that you can get dust between glass and LCD. If this doesnt bother you I've found that any instant adhesive is ok but use the smallest amount in the corners and in the middle of the longest edge - again dont use too much or it will run under the glass when you press edges down and will be visible. I have found it is best to buy a LCD/Digitizer combo with a midframe which comes with new 3M adhesive but you may need to use instant adhesive as the digitizer can separate from the frame later
