is my phone defective? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

After playing a game such as windup knight for about 15 min my phone gets really hot and the game starts to lag. I immediately exit the game to check the temp and im getting 117°f. Is this considered normal? Im getting simular results on all graphic intensive games. BTW my screen brightness is set at half way.

Are you running stock clock speeds? Mine got hot on the charger while still stock and I rebooted and killed some junk in the background and the temps dropped dramatically.

Have not overclocked. Im running stock clock speed.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus extreme heat fixes?

I preordered the Galaxy Nexus for Sprint the week before the release, and I've been having heat issues since I got it.
So I paid for "TempMonitor" on Google Play so I could monitor the temperature of the battery but the battery was only 40c and rarely goes above 45c. The CPU however is what is getting hot. When I say this thing gets hot, I mean it, and only while charging and in use. If its not charging, it will get warm but not hot like I'm talking. During light usage the CPU will rise to 55c or more and while playing a game it has gone as high as 65c, it burns to touch the screen at these temperatures and when it gets hot like this the touch screen also becomes unresponsive for multitouch.
Already starred the issue #23044 on android's google code page for the multitouch issues though.
Exchange if possible. Those temps seem to high to offset by anything you can do tweaking wise. Or you have something rogue using cpu cycles keeping the heat up.
...
Do you have a case? My Seidio Active does a GREAT job at insulating the heat coming off the phone and holding it in.
If I'm playing a CPU/GPU intense game or app, it'll easily be 15 degrees warmer with the case than without it.
I do have a case so that's probably the reason. Mostly silicon rubber. I've just never had a phone get so hot I thought it was unusual.
I use Watchdog Lite to monitor background apps for high CPU usage and it rarely ever goes off. The only app I use that it notifies me about is Facebook which has the tendency to use 40-50% CPU while in the background
This phone does get hot when I'm on the internet and only then its the top half where I imagine the CPU is
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
I took off the case.and have been browsing these forums. Still running as hot as 65c with random jumps in temperature. It will go from 55 to 65 in a matter of seconds.
Over 3G? That would be almost normal. Also stock correct? I get a little bit warm over wifi browsing so I would assume some heat over poor 3G signal.

nexus heat issues?

does anyone else is nexus get really hot when surfing the internet or doing anything else. I've only been using the phone for 15 minutes and it's already dropped 10 percent. idk its up to about 118 degrees
is this pretty common with this phone?
Clock speed
Usage
Screen brightness
Those affect how your gets.
Are u an aggressive user and clocked it up high and always have high brightness.
No only 15% brightness no over clock. New phone just got it today just seems to heat up asap...and gets over 110 degrees easily. The of course causes major battery drain. Prob normal for this phone just never experienced heat like this before
Isn't the processor on the Gnex designed to do a panic restart when it reaches 110 C's ? :/ yes its a big issue i've noticed that the phone doesn't get that hot when using stock Rom weird...
I don't get over 110 and I'm OCed to 1.3gHz, auto brightness on.

The only time mine gets abnormally hot is during a phone call. Im even underclocked and it still does.
getting hot in a smart phone this powerful is normal. I had the S3 for week, that sucker gets hot!
I agree with OP. Mine gets noticeably warm when scrolling through large non-mobile web sites. It cool when scrolling through apps like tapatalk, market, reader apps. It must be something to do with browser engine
Mine gets quite warm as well. Especially with games like gta 3 and Final Fantasy 3.

please don't forget that you're holding a device with a dual core CPU, clocked at 1200 MHz, without fan, water-cooling or anything. ever tried touching a computer-cpu?
(don't do that, lol)
Mine can easily get to 110 degrees. It definitely has a heat issue. My Razr Maxx can get warm too, but not hot like this GNex. It hurts to palm sometimes !
LTE / Camera / Data stuff . / Charging all contributes to this.
Thank god it has removable battery, since battery life will be significantly dampened by heat.
Mine gets hot since Jelly Bean... Maybe "project butter" is intended to melt our phones like butter
remember, battery temp and cpu temp are two completely different things. cpu temp will get lowered automagically in the gnex when it reaches a certain point(heat throttling is enabled in the gnex, unless you disable it), and it will shut down the cpu when you reach 110C, not 110F, that is a safety feature. 110C is 230F btw.

S3 getting hot when playing games and..

Hey gang.
Does everyone's s3 get hot when playing games?
Just trying to figure out if it's normal. It feels hotter than other phones I've owned. And want to know if this is common or if I should return my S3
It's really warm when using data (browsing, YouTube etc.) around 95-105°
But gets hot when playing games. Around 120 -125°
Chime in. Would love some feedback on everyone's S3.

Every smartphone I have had gets warm when playing games for over 30min.
I believe this is normal as long as you monitor and don't over clock a lot. Eventually that can kill your hardware.

today for me was the hottest my phone has ever gotten - 105F. it was 95F outside and i had to turn my screen brightness up so i could see, on top of surfing the web and chatting on the phone. someone commented in another thread that our phone can go up to 140F without issue. i dont know if thats true, but there ya have it...oh, i havent played any games yet
Been monitoring temps with system tuner under different stress levels. Playing gta3 I pushed temps to 52°C.
Internet browsing has me around the low 40s. At idle the temp is around 32-35C
My ambient temp in my home is about 73-74 F.
None the less this phone is one hot tamale! Lol

I've only played one game for any extended period of time so far which is Home Run Battle 2 and my GS3 doesn't get hot at all. It runs just slightly warmer than it usually does but it's by far the coolest phone I've eve had.
Get really hot when browsing too long 30 min +

My phone gets warm as well. The temp is about average just like the rest of you guys so I wouldn't worry. Having a very thin back cover doesn't help either.

Under voting helps with this a TON. I took my voltage for 1.5ghz from 1150mv down to 1025mv and it stays much much cooler under full load. Oh and temps won't break your cpu, too much nanny software on this chip. Even over clocked. Over voltage may though =)

not really
So far I tried playing Final Fantasy 3 on it, definitely very warm, but not hot to touch. Others include Youtube and prolong Web Browsing. Music is fine however. :victory:

The phone gets really warm on stock. The cpu has a temp control feature that if it gets too hot it will slow down. The cpu is made to work up to really high temperatures so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
If you flash to a custom kernel, they are lowering voltages on some of the frequencies and I am noticing an incredible loss of heat. My phone does not get warm anymore, at least no where near stock.

This. Like faux said some of the chips run the same voltage across many frequencies (in my case 1150mv) I was able to lower them into the 850-1050s which is crazy low. Remember power draw goes up exponentially with voltage change.

Is it possible that the American version (dualcore 2gb ram) doesnt get as hot as the international one (quadcore exynos 1gb ram)?
Mine gets pretty hot as well when i play for long times, i guess the main reason why many people are talking about this is that the Chipsets are located directly at the bottom where you would hold your phone while gaming in portrait mode for example. So you can directly feel it and the heat of your hand further warms the phone My Tegra3 tablet gets pretty hot as well in one spot - where the cpu is, but its not a place you normally place your hands, so you wont even notice that it gets warm.
Same thing was with my previous phone the DesireHD. It never got hot on the places where i held it, so you think it wont heat up at all.
In general though: I have some experience with cpu clocking on PCs and overclocking and stuff. It depends a little on the chipset of course but in general temps like 50-70° C are no problem at all for CPUs.
Workaround on SGSIII: Enable power save mode CPU. It reduces the clock to 1ghz (at least on my rom - stock jelly bean polish release), it still runs most games and UI perfectly smooth in jelly bean but it gets considerably less hot.
if i install many apps at once (testing new roms) my phone gets hot

[Q] Note 2 Overheating Problem

Hello XDA,
I have just bought Galaxy Note 2 (using the stock rom 4.1.2), on second day of use I have installed "Need for Speed Most Wanted". After playing about 15 minutes the upper part of Note 2 (around of the camera) started to heat up then I have stopped the app so on that it have returned to normal heat. I am so confused, do you suggest me to bring it back to store? or it is normal? have you ever had overheating on your Note 2 before?
(The mobile data was on, I was not running any apps on background, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi was off, brightness was full)
Thanks in advance!
When im playing nfs ..I also experience this one.. I guess it is normal..as long as the heat is tolerable and not too much

Thats where the exynos processor is!
It's a quad core'd beast phone without any external fans to cool off the heat. It would naturally get hot when playing GPU intensive games such as NFS.
In short its normal for it to get heated that much and all should be well.
Cheers!
And also lower your brightness.. it eats alot of battery considering nfs is also a power hog.. they will make your phone really hot

Yeah don't worry about it. Phones ALWAYS get warm when doing processor intensive things. The problem is that phones are getting thinner and thinner, and that means less and less room for the components to breathe! While it's fine and dandy that it's getting warm, it should never get too hot to handle. Otherwise, it's OK .
similar overheating problem
hey guys, i have a similar heating problem with my note 2 but it occurred after i rooted my phone with the toolkit. the overheating happens while just using the internet browser. has anyone had this problem after root?
thanks in advance.
I experienced the same last night when I played it from the external SD Card, not sure if it was the same when it was in the local sd..

How hot is it.. because normally it will feel hot when playing games... try to imagine that a powerful 1.6 quad core is insertet inside a smartphone with no ventilation..

I experience heating also while playing games like NFS, Osmos HD etc. I monitored the cpu temperature and I encountered temps from 55-60C so far. In stress tests I see around 75-80C. I think is kinda hot.

No, only the hind part around the camera lens. The front and/or upper (or even whole) part around the screen is normal. Surprisingly other 3D intensive games like Beach Buggy Blitz and Blood and Glory do not get that hot like when playing with Where is Perry? game, which is a 2D game, but I guess it is more CPU intensive.
These are not problems, the heat has to go somewhere. The cpu operates safely even at temperatures above 80.
If your phone suddenly gets hot for no reason, your cpu is spiking probably because an app didn't release its lock on a high cpu frequency. Kill the rogue app.

Do you have a source for showing the ideal temps for the cpu chip? I must confirm that 65C is normal under heavy load.

What temperature does your guys' devices get up to?

My G4 feels very hot in my pants pocket (to the point I need to switch the pocket its in, or take it out for a bit), but when I check the temperature it is only around 50c - 60c. Is this a normal temperature, or is my phone's temperature actually above the norm?
Not normal in idle, that is for sure. Mine gets very hot when using mobile data and the screen is above 60% brightness. Having 8 tabs in chrome gets mine very hot, wtf, I'm not gaming... I noticed this a few days ago, never bothered me before. I didn't change anything lately, using stock 20D (ota from 20A).

Cpu temp wise, normally it hovers around 33C and goes up to 60C while gaming.
Surface temp wise it doesn't get burning hot
I'm on 20e MM
I got it over 60 while browsing, using mobile data and 100% brightenes. I never play games on the phone.
