Overheating

So I was wondering what temps you guys are seeing when your phone overheats.
My phone reboots when it hits 37 C, which seems awful low. Anyone else seeing such low reboot temps?

Mine doesn't reboot that low, the highest I have seen it go was like 43.7 or something

I've never had my phone reboot due to overheating even at 42°C. Running CM6.01

Hmm, this is getting frustrating. I've begun to reboot at around 37 C. Is there any way to change that number? Anything to reset?

Is that CPU or battery temperature? If battery then the CPU would be much hotter.

Battery... but it's weird. The battery temperature gets to 37 C, and then reboot. When I very distinctly remember it before going 45+ C without a problem.
And now I'm bootlooping. Seems to start up, and is still too hot, then reboots again. Anyone have this happen to them? Lower temp reboots?

Sounds like you may have permanently damaged your device, if your battery temp were 40+ degree celsius your CPU temp would be a sustained 15+ degrees hotter. Running your device this hot often certainly could damage it over time.

No no, my battery isn't that hot for long amounts of time, just, like when I'm surfing for a long time or something. Trying an undervolted kernel now.

Do you have a backup battery that you can try - see if you get the same results? Batteries do occassionally stop working properly.

My phone would reboot when using GPS in the car if it was on the dashboard or mounted - I checked the temperature when it booted and didn't get stuck in a boot loop and it was around 45c.....
I returned the phone to stock and brought it back to vzw, they gave me a new battery, phone still runs somewhat hot even stock.

But mine is rebooting at 37-38 C. Which is awfully low. I'm RUU'd, S-oned, and factory-resetted and STILL it happens. So it's a hardware problem.
Gonna take it into a Verizon store and demand a replacement on the spot x]

I can advisr from personal experience on your symptoms that you have one choice ... Return to verizon for a refurb. This is what happens when you have an early incredible with a faulty hardware radio. It gets to the point where it starts trying to compensate and super heats. You must return.
Every other suggestion would be a mask to an existing well known hardware problem.

I once left my phone in a black bag on a hot summer day. It went up to 50 C with no problems. It didn't reboot or anything.

I have one of the original Incredible's from launch day, it is usually around 43-45. Sometimes it gets warmer than that playing games. Never actually had any problems. The hottest it ever gets is on Z rom's. Those things have gotten it to 50 .
I'm on CM7 W/Slayher's 2.6.37 kernel, and it's at 42 just on the home screen. Mind you this is all on stock speeds. My phone doesn't like to overclock. Regardless of kernel. It can go to 1.113 sometimes, but any more = reboot.

On the HTC Incredible site, there is a FAQ which states the maximum recommended operating temp is ~60C.
I'm relatively sure there is no problem with the battery or the CPU doing up to ~90 for awhile because that's a fairly common temp for CPUs and Batteries to withstand. I'm sure that like most batteries , at >~50C it is less efficient, but I doubt the CPU is presented with any problems in that range.
Phones present a unique set of high-temp problems. Cooling sucks in those little enclosed boxes, and manufacturers definitely don't want your hand or ear burned, and are terrified of having a battery burn up in your hand or pocket, so that is probably why 60 is said to be max. I don't like picking up my phone when it's at all hot (~40C or more) but while experimenting with my own kernels and voltages and overclocking, I've had it reboot somewhere around 60C. Was it the temp, or was it overclocked too far? I have no idea, but I lowered both and stopped taking stupid chances with it.
This thing of rebooting at 37C seems nuts, inappropriate, and most likely a defective part, or one of the many services or apps that perhaps does the wrong thing (accesses verbotten memory, bad ptr, etc..)
A bad example for sure, but at work, many of our HP or Dell Racked servers (DL380's etc), are too hot to touch while running. They have enough fans to power a 747, and it just makes it pretty clear that in some cases, processors and other components can run at amazing temps.

Overheating Question

Often while playing a game, my screen will randomly dim and i will check the brightness option where it warns me of overheating.
The battery temp is only 42C, and the phone isnt very warm, ive felt phones get way hotter.
Whats wrong? is it the phone? or normal? Anything I can do?

Is ur phone overclocked? Playing game does makes the phone really hot even without OC ur cpu.

I'm not speaking for everyone certainly but I have seen 42c while talking on the phone.
It does get a bit warm, but I never get the warning you are speaking of. I am completely stock.
I now haven't gotten to this temperature (close but not as high as 42c) in awhile.

My brightness always dims and gets limited to prevent overheating. My phone has gotten up to 125F while it was charging and I was using it (nothing very intensive though, like playing games or anything like that. Mostly texting, email, XDA) I have even had an overheating warning on the charging animation while ordnance few times too. I'm actually going to bring it in for them to look at. I'm stock kernel and rom(just rooted)
Just in a few minutes my screen has been on it just shot from 89.9F to 98F. And all I did was write this post.

125F is way too high, there's got to be something wrong with the phone. Mine sits at idle around 70F, with heavy use, it never reaches 100F. And I'm overclocked to 1.4GHZ.

Agreed. High 70s to mid 80s no matter what I do in a hot and humid hawaii climate. Reached 107 at 1.6ghz while plugged in doing 15 back to back benches to test for stability. Somethinf wrong with your phine sir

It happens only when im playing a game, also at Max brightness. Went up to about 44C. Not overclocked, but undervolted.
Is this abnormal? Should I try to get a replacement?

my phone also dims
used to get temps around 115F on my evo 3D,never saw any ill effects though
this samsung does get to 102F or so occasionally,and no ill effects so far either

Well I undervolted, which doesnt make it run hotter, it'll make it cooler if anything.

I've never understood the logic behind that. A processer uses a certain amount of power, measured in Watts. Watts equals current times voltage. If you lower voltage, current has to increase, and more current equals more heat. Am I missing something?

[Q] Galaxy Nexus extreme heat fixes?

I preordered the Galaxy Nexus for Sprint the week before the release, and I've been having heat issues since I got it.
So I paid for "TempMonitor" on Google Play so I could monitor the temperature of the battery but the battery was only 40c and rarely goes above 45c. The CPU however is what is getting hot. When I say this thing gets hot, I mean it, and only while charging and in use. If its not charging, it will get warm but not hot like I'm talking. During light usage the CPU will rise to 55c or more and while playing a game it has gone as high as 65c, it burns to touch the screen at these temperatures and when it gets hot like this the touch screen also becomes unresponsive for multitouch.
Already starred the issue #23044 on android's google code page for the multitouch issues though.

Exchange if possible. Those temps seem to high to offset by anything you can do tweaking wise. Or you have something rogue using cpu cycles keeping the heat up.

Do you have a case? My Seidio Active does a GREAT job at insulating the heat coming off the phone and holding it in.
If I'm playing a CPU/GPU intense game or app, it'll easily be 15 degrees warmer with the case than without it.

I do have a case so that's probably the reason. Mostly silicon rubber. I've just never had a phone get so hot I thought it was unusual.
I use Watchdog Lite to monitor background apps for high CPU usage and it rarely ever goes off. The only app I use that it notifies me about is Facebook which has the tendency to use 40-50% CPU while in the background

This phone does get hot when I'm on the internet and only then its the top half where I imagine the CPU is

I took off the case.and have been browsing these forums. Still running as hot as 65c with random jumps in temperature. It will go from 55 to 65 in a matter of seconds.

Over 3G? That would be almost normal. Also stock correct? I get a little bit warm over wifi browsing so I would assume some heat over poor 3G signal.

Problems with extended gaming.

I've been noticing lately that when I play games for more than 30 minutes on my Gnex. The CPU gets pretty warm about 53 °c and reaches 60 if I continue.
I know this isn't that hot but the problem is when it reaches 50 ° c the pixels in my screen seem to get scrambled.
So I am wondering if this could be due to undervolting ? Maybe my CPU isnt getting enough juice.

Simple. Look at your computer. There's probably a heat sink, fan and if it's really powerful/expensive possibly even a water cooling system. CPU's get hot. That's their nature. Combine that with ever powerful phones without any real cooling solution and that's an inevitability.
The display is right "on top" of the cpu so it's only natural that the heat is affecting the display. I'm not excusing it but it seems like something with no solution.

Makes sense, to be safe should I not let it get that hot?
110°c is supposed to be the CPU kill switch. But I doubt this phone can even handle 80°c before it just plain melts.

One plus 3 heating/warming even after replacement like the old one! is it normal?

when using wifi/4g in my house, i watched video, browsed fb and even shared internet and all. below i'll give my observations:
in wifi:
watching video, fb and browsing, whatsappin: the phone get very very slightly warm like not warm just the bit different from the phones usual temp like it hovers around 33-34.
when gaming in wifi it goes arounf 36-39 (NOVA 3) battery never crossed 31..
4g in my house, battery arounf 32-33, temperature around 37-39 for all.
but when i step out of my house, like when i'm operating my mobile in train/bus and the ambient temperature varies from say 28-32, my phone gets considerably hot and today, i was travelling in Bus and the ambient temp was around 35 and i was just browsing , watching videos and fb, my phone became hot like it even would have touched 43-46! i felt it hot to touch, is this norma(it's making me extremely paranoid)l!!??? if this is the case what happens if it's summer here, the phone would become blazingly hot, coz in summer ambient temp would be around 36-44 and all!!
Is this normala or am i unlucky for the second time ? I'm getting paranoid!

Are you serious.... When the ambient temp is 35 degree what else would you expect... Every phone on the planet will get that temperature. Can't believe you had a phone returned for this. You know the front of the device is black and absorbs light... When the sun hits your phone it's gonna heat up also. This phone is the best Android phone when it comes to thermal throttling.

With heavy multitasking, I hit 60+. Not regularly, but it has happened. The temperatures you're hitting are normal for me. I've had zero issues with the device. I have an OtterBox case, so I don't feel the heat as much. Honestly, I barely even notice heat at those temperatures. Considering the fact that the body of the device is aluminum, it's going to easily get hot to the touch.
Also, my One would almost always run between 45-70, and I've had that since launch. Used it heavily daily for years, and I still use it regularly as an app development device. No issues.
These devices have extremely powerful processors. They get hot. There's not an easy, efficient, way to cool a processor in a device like this yet, but they're designed for heavy use, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi first of all thanks for the reply.. I'll tell you what really made me paranoid.. Every evening I travel in bus and train and the ambient temperature would be from27-28_29.. I use 4g jio.. I just browsw/fb/insta.. In minutes my phone near the earpiece on the screen gets warmed up and it'd go around 40-41. Then I lock it it cools down fast but when I unlock it in seconds again starts warming up... My friend using same 4g in moto g4plus but his screen is cooler than mine... Please my one last doubt...

This is nothing lol. I live in Scotland so just now ambient temperature range from 5-13 °c and in my house 21-23°c and my Z3+ hits 60-70°c easily on heavy use. Benchmarked it one day and hit 90°c. The joys of the 810 chipset. Anyway away to upgrade to the OP3T so i should see and feel a massive difference.

Install a custom ROM and kernel and limit your background tasks. You may just have a bunch of things running using your CPU.

Hey all thank you guys very much for replying to my thread! i'm really feeling okay instead of getting paranoid with my phone.. although i'd be very happy if you guys just clear me this last doubt!
today I was playing NOVA 3 connected to wifi in an ambient temperature of 25C, 5-10mins into gaming, CPU reaCHED A MAX OF 41c and at around 20 it maintaining at 43 but jumping sometimes 45.. this is gaming, but i get the same temperature just browsing in knda same ambient temp while I'm travelling. and also browsing in wifi/4g(fb,insta,chrome) in my house in ambient 25-27 gets the phone phone to 35-37... and the rest of the pat of the mobile is cool, even the back side is normal, only the small portion between the earpiece..
why is this happening? is this normal(it'd be great if you guys clear this)? if yup y so? and why phones like oneplus x and moto g4 etc have relatively less temp than OP3..
I know it'd be irritating to answer kinda same question again, but this would my help paranoiac freaking out for my mobile will go down..

Because the Oneplus 3 is a lot faster, the Temps you are giving are n even close to hot... This has been one of the cooler phones so far.

Like others said, those temps are completely normal. Hell, I'd even expect them to be higher with your fairly high ambient temps.
About comparison with other phones - it all depends on internals and design. OP3 is made of aluminum so it'll dissipate more heat into the case - you'll feel it better. Other mentioned phones are plastic, so they'll contain more heat inside (you'll not feel so much heat, but the cpu may even run hotter).
And OP3 has cpu located just below the camera, so it's normal that it reaches top temps in that upper center part of the device.
P.S.: You talked about loads and ambient temps, but didn't mention screen brightness - that also plays a massive role in running temperatures.

for me mostly brightness bar will be in the middle... i never use it with high brightness..

Just get a case and maybe a screen protector so that you can't feel it getting hot.

hey ya !! sorry to disturb you again and again.. just a urios doubt.. what'd be the temperature of the phone or how hot can it gets, when u use 4g and fb app in ambient temperature of 29C and 33C..
mine got arounf 38-41 for the 1st cse and around 43 for the second case..
I know i'm being paranoid, ,but please, clearing tis would help stop worrying a bit

About Moto g, it has much weaker SoC. A Ferrari's engine gets much more hotter than a toy car. Doesn't mean there is anything wrong with Ferrari
4G /3G active usage can get hotter than gaming. That's also normal

Nothing much to worry here. Even I use Jio all the time. My OP3 get a lot hotter than any other device I use before. Reasons I knew are these.
1. OP3 rock with a high end processor. Say SD 820. Other phones you mentioned are consisting of relatively lower end processor. So internally they might heat up more that OP3 while doing high processor intensive tasks, but the plastic casing keep the heat inside, as OP3 is made up of Aluminum that being a metal heats up so quickly and and u feel more hotter in hands than the other ones and also it cools faster.
2. AFAIK the processor is situated just below the Camera bump. Hence it heats up very quickly at that area. Irrespective of outside temperature.
3.While using 4G network it's obvious that the phonehave to communicate with the network at a very high rate than 2G or WiFi. So it's clear that it will heat up. Also using high processor intensive application like Facebook gives the processor high stress and it heats up in no time.
Remedies
1. Use a case. That somewhat helps in insulating the heat.
2.If possible use WiFi rather than 4G network. That will considerably helps your battery life.
Conclusion.
Don't worry about the warmth of the phone.Its normal. Just enjoy using the phone.

Clearly never experienced a SD810 device. I'm sure Snapdragon took there name too seriously with that chipset. I could hit HIGH 80°c in seconds playing basic games, using the camera and under heavy usage. Had to tailer my use around my Z3+ but now I have the 3T I can do what I want and it never goes past 50°c so far.
