My G4 feels very hot in my pants pocket (to the point I need to switch the pocket its in, or take it out for a bit), but when I check the temperature it is only around 50c - 60c. Is this a normal temperature, or is my phone's temperature actually above the norm?
Not normal in idle, that is for sure. Mine gets very hot when using mobile data and the screen is above 60% brightness. Having 8 tabs in chrome gets mine very hot, wtf, I'm not gaming... I noticed this a few days ago, never bothered me before. I didn't change anything lately, using stock 20D (ota from 20A).

Cpu temp wise, normally it hovers around 33C and goes up to 60C while gaming.
Surface temp wise it doesn't get burning hot
I'm on 20e MM
I got it over 60 while browsing, using mobile data and 100% brightenes. I never play games on the phone.

Like the topic says..
My Defy usually very hot whenever I surf the internet using 3G. Sometimes temperature hit around 45°C.. When idle on 2G, it stay around 35°C which is normal.
Anybody experience temperature above 45°C ? I'm running setvsel to minimise the voltage use and at 1000mhz seemed doesn't cool it down.

mine 800 mhz reaching till 41 c without running setvsel.
i think its normal.
and don't forget the warms of the hands are part of it.
when i'm playing modern combat 2 less than 15 min get's hot.
The hottest mine has gone was 50degrees..usingit as a wifi hotspot
But the temp drops to 40 - 45 if there is full 3G signal...
I have reached temperature above 40 C occasionally. Heck I've reached 45 when using my defy as a router for the wife's iPod (immediately stop and throw the defy in a bucket of water for a minute afterwards..temp drop down to 26!!) .
If i am using HSDPA, temp will get high, 39 -41 Celcius is expected after an hour of heavy browsing. very rarely went above it unless downloading a big file.
But it is much better compared to before, right now i am using the central europe baseband running 2.3.4-134. When I am using stock UK or even SEA baseband, temp reached 43 after just 15 minutes of browsing.
I am in Indonesia, and found the Central Europe BB is the best for me.
I only get high temp from HSDPA, never from wifi or gaming. Played 3d games till my battery almost out and it only reached 40. Played a movie for 2 hours and the temp is only at 39/40. Transfer 4GB of data using moto portal Wi-Fi to my PC for 2 hour, temp is 37 and this is done today.
Here is my take, a temperature of 41 in using the defy is expected when you are using your HSDPA, anything above 41 is considered HOT for me.
This device tend to be hotter then say my friend Galaxy S. probably since it is water resistant so the heat/air outlet is limited.
dont worry too much, you can do what i do and dunk the defy in a glass/bucket of cold water should you deemed the device is too hot.
I'm on leaked 2.3.4, and I have highest temp when surfing on 3G 44 c, when idle the temp is about 28 c.
I would hope and wish this Defy will stand up at 50 c since it name of dust and water resistant mean no air or any ventilation in or out from this device. But sometimes it worried me of holding it when it becoming hotter. Normally I will open the battery cover after I finished my games or surfing and lay it down for a few minutes.
Note: I hardly get anywhere near 40 c when I was using Froyo 2.2.2 french retail version. Perhaps this gingerbread run 1000Mhz by default caused its temperature rise quicker.

I live in Texas USA. Here in the summer the temp' is above 100°(38°c) Fahrenheit 90% of the time. One day my wife left her cliq XT in the car. When we returned the screen was showing 'cool down mode'. When the home screen came up and I look at the temp', it was showing 58°C. I was shocked! Her phone still works properly.
So I think these phones can survive extreme temperatures.

Typically mine runs about 30C (86F). On a really hot/humid day here in Iowa, and while charging, it will reach around 45C (113F). I've got my defy running with setvsel at [email protected]/[email protected]/[email protected]

This look promissing! The phone actually will auto switch to 'cool down mode'.
Probably the mode will triggered above 60c. Thanks for the input..
Mine is above 35°C whith 1,3ghz/78vsel.

mine is sat idle at 26c but using 3g on a hot day i have seen it hit 45c it is running at:
300Mhz 22
600MHz 32
1GHz 52
I preordered the Galaxy Nexus for Sprint the week before the release, and I've been having heat issues since I got it.
So I paid for "TempMonitor" on Google Play so I could monitor the temperature of the battery but the battery was only 40c and rarely goes above 45c. The CPU however is what is getting hot. When I say this thing gets hot, I mean it, and only while charging and in use. If its not charging, it will get warm but not hot like I'm talking. During light usage the CPU will rise to 55c or more and while playing a game it has gone as high as 65c, it burns to touch the screen at these temperatures and when it gets hot like this the touch screen also becomes unresponsive for multitouch.
Already starred the issue #23044 on android's google code page for the multitouch issues though.
Exchange if possible. Those temps seem to high to offset by anything you can do tweaking wise. Or you have something rogue using cpu cycles keeping the heat up.
...
Do you have a case? My Seidio Active does a GREAT job at insulating the heat coming off the phone and holding it in.
If I'm playing a CPU/GPU intense game or app, it'll easily be 15 degrees warmer with the case than without it.
I do have a case so that's probably the reason. Mostly silicon rubber. I've just never had a phone get so hot I thought it was unusual.
I use Watchdog Lite to monitor background apps for high CPU usage and it rarely ever goes off. The only app I use that it notifies me about is Facebook which has the tendency to use 40-50% CPU while in the background
This phone does get hot when I'm on the internet and only then its the top half where I imagine the CPU is

I took off the case.and have been browsing these forums. Still running as hot as 65c with random jumps in temperature. It will go from 55 to 65 in a matter of seconds.
Over 3G? That would be almost normal. Also stock correct? I get a little bit warm over wifi browsing so I would assume some heat over poor 3G signal.

does anyone else is nexus get really hot when surfing the internet or doing anything else. I've only been using the phone for 15 minutes and it's already dropped 10 percent. idk its up to about 118 degrees
is this pretty common with this phone?
Clock speed
Usage
Screen brightness
Those affect how your gets.
Are u an aggressive user and clocked it up high and always have high brightness.
No only 15% brightness no over clock. New phone just got it today just seems to heat up asap...and gets over 110 degrees easily. The of course causes major battery drain. Prob normal for this phone just never experienced heat like this before
Isn't the processor on the Gnex designed to do a panic restart when it reaches 110 C's ? :/ yes its a big issue i've noticed that the phone doesn't get that hot when using stock Rom weird...
I don't get over 110 and I'm OCed to 1.3gHz, auto brightness on.

The only time mine gets abnormally hot is during a phone call. Im even underclocked and it still does.
getting hot in a smart phone this powerful is normal. I had the S3 for week, that sucker gets hot!
I agree with OP. Mine gets noticeably warm when scrolling through large non-mobile web sites. It cool when scrolling through apps like tapatalk, market, reader apps. It must be something to do with browser engine
Mine gets quite warm as well. Especially with games like gta 3 and Final Fantasy 3.

please don't forget that you're holding a device with a dual core CPU, clocked at 1200 MHz, without fan, water-cooling or anything. ever tried touching a computer-cpu?
(don't do that, lol)
Mine can easily get to 110 degrees. It definitely has a heat issue. My Razr Maxx can get warm too, but not hot like this GNex. It hurts to palm sometimes !
LTE / Camera / Data stuff . / Charging all contributes to this.
Thank god it has removable battery, since battery life will be significantly dampened by heat.
Mine gets hot since Jelly Bean... Maybe "project butter" is intended to melt our phones like butter
remember, battery temp and cpu temp are two completely different things. cpu temp will get lowered automagically in the gnex when it reaches a certain point(heat throttling is enabled in the gnex, unless you disable it), and it will shut down the cpu when you reach 110C, not 110F, that is a safety feature. 110C is 230F btw.
Hello, would like to know is it normal? Everything was turned on, GPS, WIFI, all time 3g network, power saving mode was off. Surf in internet, download few files and use play market aswell. After 30min - 1h i realize screen on the top is warm or hot, im not sure. Looks hot for me, but maybe its normal. I download Battery saver + to check temperature and its shows 35+ decrease. Is it normal or i should worry about it?
Phone is few months old and used very carefully.
Anyone? Should i worry about it? Btw pover saving mode was turned off. At same time surf in
Internet and download few files. Gps, blootooth, wifi was turned on.
I only notice mine warming up when I play games..

Assuming it's cpu temperature that is 35 c, it's perfectly fine, the cpu starts to shut down at >80c.
But that might be your battery temperature you're referring to, which is kind of irrelevant in this regard.
Generally speaking, the phone can get so hot that it's uncomfortable to touch, and it won't be damaged. There is a huge amount of heat generated from the quad core when it's working hard, which has to escape somewhere. If it goes above a certain temperature threshold, it simply shuts down.

Notice only when playing games. Like gta 3 or vice city. But battery temp was normal. But phone was pretty hot

I have seen battery temp of 40°C.
All I was doing was "simple" multi tasking, ie browsing, Facebook, texting etc. I don't do gaming or anything too intensive.
Would you class 40°C as too hot? Why would it get this hot? Any long term detrimental effects? I know it's not the processor temperature but surely the close proximity of a hot battery must have some sort of effect?
I have never had my screen at 100%, never needed it, mine is always set at 75% Auto so I can't even blame the screen. I know not all people experience heat with full brightness but there have been reports of this.
My HTC One X+ used to get hot when it was new, and 18 months down the line, the overheating really became an issue, and it was the same with the phone I had before it (HTC Desire). I really don't want the same with this phone.
36.3°C as I type this and all I have been doing is browsing, ambient temp of around 17ish, brightness on 70% Auto.
Any ideas folks?
40 is not too hot. Mine is at 35 at the moment.
Sent from my LG-D851 using Tapatalk
What would you class as too hot?
Ok. So if 40 in itself isn't too hot, isn't it too hot for the relatively little amount of work I was putting the phone through?
It depends on how hot it was in the room you were in. Ambient temperature has an effect on it I've noticed.
Sent from my LG-D851 using Tapatalk
I would say the ambient temp was around 20°C.
I would say that it's too halt when you get a heat warning? warnings usually happen before any real damage is done so I would say you're fine until then
