Sprint just started building out*its LTE network, but being the eager beavers that they are, the folks in Overland Park are already talking about taking the Now Network to the next level. Iyad Tarazi, Sprint's VP of network development and engineering, said that Sprint will be rolling out an LTE-Advanced network in the first half of 2013. (As a brief refresher, LTE-Advanced is a*true 4G technology*that can make regular LTE speeds lookpositively pedestrian*in comparison.) Tarazi added that we would see 12 LTE devices in 2012 and that over 250 million people will have access to Sprint-flavored LTE by the end of 2013 -- with*voice over LTE*service coming in the first quarter of that year. For those (hundreds?) of you worried about the fate of of WiMAX, well, don't. Apparently, the out-of-favor 4G network will continue to be supported for several more years due to Sprint's agreement with Clearwire. So, it appears Sprint's really making a run atVerizon's*LTE hegemony. Good luck Mr. Hesse, you're probably going to need it.

They aren't going to put up new towers.
Sprint actually has the most towers of all the major carriers.
Network Vision is actually going to allow for less towers while giving more coverage and better speeds.
More towers does not necessarily mean more coverage.
Just higher costs to run the network / maintenance.

Exactly. Sprint doesn't support Wimax in my area now - I can rarely connect and when I do I get crappy speeds. So their continued support of them doesn't exactly inspire me. As long as they are rolling out LTE why not roll out EVDO rev B at the same time at virtually no additional cost? And for goodness sakes, increase your backbone that the towers connect to and fix your proxy servers!

I don't know about others but I'm saying their network speeds where I need them - Arizon, CA, NY, FL and CT are wretched for 3G and 4G rarely even works well/frequently disconnects and isn't very fast where I've managed to maintain a connection. So to put it succinctly - Sprint data speeds suck both on 3G and 4G everyplace I need them.

I live in the Bay area and although slow the speeds have been enough for me to surf and check stuff. I just recently finished school in NY and just moved out here a few months ago and my speeds in new york seemed fine as well as in CT. I had the EVO then and all summer until the epic came out. 4g has sucked as far as coverage everywhere i went but when i do get a connection the speeds were about 4-6mbps. To be honest i didnt notice that my 3g speeds were really slow until i started seeing people complain in threads lol i guess ignorance is bliss.

When they do that they will actually be a "true 4g" network with voip etc.
Everything will be data.

That's exactly what Sprint is doing unfortunately people really haven't read into it.
"Within the range of system development, LTE-Advanced and WiMAX 2, can use up to 8x8 MIMO and 128 QAM. Example performance: 100MHz aggregated bandwidth, LTE-Advanced provides almost 3.3Gbit peak download rates per sector of the base station under ideal conditions. Advanced network architectures combined with distributed and collaborative smart antenna technologies provide several years road map of commercial enhancements."

Welcome to Sprint.
Cast aside your ideas on 3G and 4G speeds. We (at Sprint) don't throttle your speeds once you exceed 2GB or 5GB - we throttle from your very first kilobyte. Your speeds will be so slow you won't ever exceeed 2GB or 5GB. This is how we can offer unlimited data. But rest assured if our speeds improve for any unforseen reason, we'll include a $25 fee for your "outstanding" data experience on top of the $10 fee you pay for the "rich" data experience.

We knew more or less that anannouncement of this sort*was coming. Back in July,*Dan Hesse had teased usface-to-face with the promise of a "great story this fall around 4G," and now the time to tell that tale has arrived. At its strategy event today, Sprint finally went public with plans to "simplify its network" by converting its CDMA 1900MHz holdings and LightSquared's 1600MHZ spectrum ("pending FCC approval") to LTE, anindustry favorite. Helping the operator make that transition is the swath of 800MHz spectrum it reclaimed from the, now defunct,*iDEN push-to-talk network*-- which had been a drain on the company's resources. This spectrum, acquired from Nextel, will be phased out by mid-2013 and rolled into LTE. The company plans for a rapid deployment of this new 4G, with the first LTE markets and handsets to hit in mid-2012 with the full rollout mostly completed by 2013. Current subscribers signed up for WiMAX plans won't have to worry as their devices will continue to be supported throughout 2012.Beginning tomorrow, Sprint's consolidating its 4G LTE (including LightSquared), 3G and Direct Connect networks into one single architecture. All the major technical milestones, such as test calls and field integration, have cleared their hurdles and work on over 22,000 cell sites are currently in process. Samsung, Alcatel Lucent and Ericsson have partnered with Sprint to install multimode 3G and 4G base stations to handle the network's future traffic, essential for deploying the multitude of frequencies required by hosted devices. Prospective iPhone 4S users on the network will be able to take advantage of better signal strength and improved voice service as Sprint intends to also offload the latter onto 800MHz.Expect a steep "reduction in roaming costs" and deeper signal penetration throughout the operator's expanding national footprint over the course of the next two years. Naturally, LTE speeds on this new network will be significantly improved over the currently in-use WiMAX, and a planned implementation of WiFi offloading should help to cut congestion by 20 percent. By the end of next year, Sprint aims to have a combined WiMAX/LTE population coverage of 176 million -- with 123 million covered by LTE and 76 million overlapping both. When the network build-out is nearly complete in 2013, the company should have over 250 million blanketed in LTE, far outstripping the stagnant 120 million served by WiMAX.

I really don't think Engadget and BGR are getting this right! It's not being converted to LTE - the LTE will be everywhere that 3G is, but its multimode architecture doesn't mean 3G is being replaced! They said they are "committed" to the 3G services long-term, and will be maintaining them. They pointed out how the enterprise customer is important, and demands at least 3-5 year stability.

See now I don't know what to do. I was considering the ET4G or the Nexus Prime if it gets announced soon. My 3G blows along with 4G only getting like 2.5 down and I'm in Kansas City, right down the road from the Sprint Headquarters. I'm pretty disappointed in these speeds.

Sprint made it clear that LTE won't be of much use until late 2012, but they will be selling WiMAX phones through 2012 and supporting WiMAX for much longer. Also, watch for speed increases as they continue to increase backhaul as part of Network Vision.

3G speeds having nothing to do with the antenna bars you see on your phone. It would make sense that if you have a strong cell signal, you should also have a strong data signal, but welcome to Sprint!
is there a 4G symbol next to the signal strength or does it say LTE? mine says 4G but they show LTE on the nokia website. i didnt upgrade my plan so i was wondering if i have LTE enabled or not.
When the "4G" shows, you're connected to HSPA+. When LTE shows, you are in fact on the actual LTE network.

Really? You need a lte dataplan to have lte.
When you upgraded, your provider should have offered the LTE Data Plan upgrade also.
One thing I've noticed is that I'm ALWAYS showing 4G now. I cannot wait to be able to look at the registry, so I can check it. I believe they set normal 3G to show 4G now. I've never gotten HSPA+ here in the house, and now it's ALWAYS on? hmmmm
Still love the phone, but that's a bit misleading...
just looked at my plan on the AT&t website and i have a unlimited LTE plan, but i still dont see the LTE symbol
Closest LTE tower is 40 miles away
Looks like Nokia's doing exactly what Apple did with the 4.1 update.
Even though you're most likely still using 3G speeds, the phone will display 4G.
Misleading. Anything under 6mbps is 3G.
The phone will only show LTE when you're in an LTE city. If you live in the bay area you're in luck. Anywhere else, not so much. (except if you live in the other major markets)
As far as the folks still grandfathered into the unlimited data plan, the good news is since your device is LTE your speeds will not be throttled until you hit 5GBs.
As soon as we have registry access, I'll be changing it to show 3G when it's actually 3G. I don't like being deceived, especially when I'm trying to download something...
I asked about this in the store and got flat out lied to by the representatives. Saying how we were in a 4G area now and my speeds will be improved. Did a bandwith test at home and still was only getting 3.5 down. Coverage map according to at&t is the same at my house and the corporate store 12 miles away.
Yeah, I'm kinda irritated about this too. Even my microcell is being labeled as "4G". When I was at work yesterday, I tried a speed test on 4G and got .8 Mb down. You don't want to know what my upload speed was.

I feel your pain, but why would you ever believe a sales rep about anything other than the amount charged to your credit card? They are salesmen. Next week it might be dishwashers, after that an underground sprinkler system. Though I feel you, you had that coming.
Just as I suspected. They've changed the Registry to show 4G even when it's definately NOT 4G. I am only able to read the Registry, so am still stuck with it, but at least I can confirm they have tried to pull the wool over my eyes as I thought.
How are they getting away with that ? Is that legal ? It must be something to do with Windows Phone, both my symbian Nokias are showing 3.5G symbol for HSPA+, not 4G.

What is the difference between LTE and LTE Advanced ? According to this, even LTE is not 4G, its 3.9G.. and HSPA+ is 3.5G
Oh, here we go.. according to International Mobile Telecommunications this is what you need to market a device as a "4G" .. but I guess no one cares since most iPhones I see are showing 4G and they don't even have the radios for it. I guess this is the "loophole"
"On December 6, 2010, ITU-R recognized that these two technologies, as well as other beyond-3G technologies that do not fulfill the IMT-Advanced requirements, could nevertheless be considered "4G", provided they represent forerunners to IMT-Advanced compliant versions and "a substantial level of improvement in performance and capabilities with respect to the initial third generation systems now deployed"."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMT-Advanced#Requirements
Actually, I have no problem with them labeling HSPA+ as 4G. That's ok with me. But they've marked UMTS as 4G. Now that seems downright dishonest... It's my guess that was done by AT&T, not Nokia/Microsoft, since it directly benefits them...
yea this does blow
i look to be just on the outskirts of the Baltimore LTE signal for ATT, and would really like to know what sort of connection I actually have, not what they want to con me into thinking. thought I'd assume if I actually did have LTE, it would be saying so, at least hopefully.
it blows - there are three towers within 10 miles of my house, but none of them put off the LTE signal. they seem to have one every exit up and down I95 in the Baltimore/Metro area

Actually, the LTE symbol is set correctly. It will only show when you are actually connected to LTE. The only one I see set incorrectly is the UMTS. It's set to 4G instead of 3G. Unfortunately, UMTS is what I normally have at home. On rare occasion, I can get HSPA+. But it's just nice to know exactly what connection I have in case I'd like to download a larger file.

I spoke to At&t about this. They told me the towers software is upgraded before the hardware. When that happens it will show 4G when you are getting 3G speeds. I may be wrong, but as I understand it 3G and 4G HSPA+ the difference is Fiber between towers instead of cable. Maybe someone can clarify for us if that's true.

That's very possible, but the issue I am having is that they simply changed in the Registry to show UMTS as 4G. That's just dishonest, unless they have some magical way of making UMTS 4G?
I'm sorry I keep going on about this. I'll stop... You won't normally see me complaining about this type of thing on these forums, I'm just a bit frustrated that it's been so blatently thrown in our faces. I still love the phone, and I actually don't mind the AT&T service I recieve, but they should TRY to not be dishonest as much as possible.
Here's an article that looked at the speeds of various networks... nothing surprising here. Here's the excerpt about Sprint...
http://www.washingtonpost.com/busin...test-network/2012/04/18/gIQAJ4pfQT_story.html
"Sprint’s network speeds came in dead last in all testing cities, and its 4G WiMax offering was behind even 3G network speeds from its competitors. The company is looking to convert its WiMax network to LTE, and, according to the report, has focused the bulk of its development resources on that conversion."
Pretty sad that we're paying for "4G" service when it's slower than 3G on other carriers. I'm really surprised there isn't a class action lawsuit over Sprint's advertising "4G" speeds which aren't fast and are hardly available to most users.

T-Mo is similar to Sprint, in some situations less, so if you include T-Mo that statement doesn't hold w/r/t the charts.

Well I don't think overall T-Mo's network is as good as the study shows (when you consider voice quality, data caps, etc. and margin of error with the study). But realistically it is probably VZW>ATT>Sprint>T-Mo.
I don't care what people say about T-Mo's speeds these days. When the G1 came out there were places in NJ/NY I couldn't even get a signal.
My point: if you want a truly reliable/speedy network then pay out for VZW or AT&T. If you don't want to pay then enjoy the slow/unlimited Sprint or the fast/IMO unreliable/data caps of T-Mo.
Ridiculous if you ask me lol....its unlimited because the speeds are so slow they aren't worried about anyone going over...lol

I know I can get good T-mo coverage at home (where I get zero Sprint coverage). I just don't know if I'll get coverage at my parent's house. They are kinda on the boundaries of the maps for all the carriers. I get zero Sprint coverage there but AT&T and Verizon both have good signals.
I've priced out phones and plans and T-mo is cheaper for me than Sprint. AT&T and Verizon are just a little more ($5-10) considering the data/voice/txt that we use and the company discounts I can get. We're definitely switching at first opportunity, just have not fully decided on AT&T or T-mo.

And that chart is showing the big companies.. I have Simple Mobile in my area which piggy backs off of T-Mobile and they get 4g inside buildings and faster speeds than us with being a month to month company... That gets me upset I must admit...
It took me nearly 5 minutes to load google.com on my Epic Touch last night! That was on 3G. Pathetic to say the least. Even 4G is terribly slow where I live. 4G is only as fast as what decent 3G used to be. What's going on? If this doesn't improve drastically by the end of this year I'm switching back to Verizon. It just isn't worth having an unlimited data plan for it to suck like this. Makes me want to stop paying my $250 phone bill every month. Nobody is getting what they're paying for and suing sprint isn't going to help matters or i would definetely concider doing just that. And yes prepayed providers are MUCH faster than Sprint in most areas. Sooooo SAD!
I'm in the Boston area and only recently have I experienced 4G. I've been on SERO for years and have been completely satisfied as a 3G user on numerous WinMo devices. My upgrade of a line to the E4GT has me paying an extra $20/mo but I still have no complaints. My expectations and usage are both low. Happy Sprint customer here!

I hope they upgrade their base 3g since it is too big of a battery kill to stay on 4g all the time.
Guess it's in the eye of the beholder. I'm not looking for 3G/4G to be a broadband replacement and by habit use Wi-Fi wherever I can, mainly for saving battery. Also, the MVNO I'm with gives us a deal better than any other major carrier by a significant amount so we'll be with them unless a better deal comes along. It does what I need and for now it's enough.
Having said that, here's what PC World's slide on Chi-town said:
Chicago
In Chicago, AT&T finished first in average 3G download rate (3.45 mbps) and in average 4G download rate (9.70 mbps), while Verizon took first in average 4G upload rate (6.92 mbps). But AT&T's 3G numbers weren't great in Chicago, compared to its performance other cities.
T-Mobile's normally strong numbers dipped significantly--especially on average 3G upload speed (0.78 mbps), where the company's recorded rate was dramatically lower than for any other city where we tested except Dallas. T-Mobile's 3G download average of 3.35 mbps for Chicago was the company's fourth-worst in our study. Even so, the difference between number one AT&T and number two T-Mobile was a scant 0.10 mbps.
Also noteworthy in the 3G data is Sprint's 3G upload average of 0.08 mbps--by far the worst average rate for any city on any measure in our study.
In the 4G bracket, AT&T notched the best average 4G download rate at 9.70 mbps and Verizon won for uploads with an average of 6.92 mbps. T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 service fared poorly in comparison to its service in other cities, registering its worst average download speed (2.24 mbps) and second-worst average upload speed (0.65 mbps) in our 13-city sample.

LOL.. no thanks, I'll go with the results from the actual comprehensive nationwide speed comparison and not your biased conclusion.. because you couldn't get signal on occasion with T-Mobile in New Jersey.
The point is, everyone's experience will be different depending on where you live, that's why they tested in many states, and then averaged the scores.
I switched from T-mobile to Sprint for my Epic Touch and I was severely disappointed with Sprints data speeds, that being said I'm sticking it out for LTE.
I think everyone here already knew what those results were going to look like. Now let's see those same tests done this time next year. Supposedly NV is improving 3g speeds also. Not being an ass or anything but truthfully speaking If you don't think Sprint is worth your money switch network's. I went and got a DROID RAZR last year and loved there 3g but 4G went out far too often. And my bill was the same for one phone what it is for 2 on Sprint, did have unlimited data though.

Dont really think that is an issue with most. I try and buy my phones off of people or Craigslist so that when I am ready to go there is no problem. Most people will leave but its a lil harder when you are in a contract and money may be tight. Me personally I do not think I can go back to a reg company if I leave with month to month companies offering better service than the Big 4
Is anyone having trouble on 3g. Seems much worse than my Evo. Having trouble connecting to Xda, Facebook etc. During in my car in the same place I eat lunch everyday and I barely have 1 to 2 bars.

Please put sprint tittle on the topic
Anyways try to update prl and profile, if that don't work call sprint to help, they probably will reset your data settings, and it might help, what speeds are you getting on it?

I can say that the 3G 100% better on the S3 than my OG Epic. It is also now 10x faster and 33% lower latency since Sprint either upgraded or fixed the tower(s) covering downtown Denver, CO.
Which is really good since I don't expect to see LTE for another 18-24 months!
Well try that thanks. Will upload some speeds when I get a chance later.

3g has degraded for me. At work I use to get about 1.5mpbs. Now I'm lucky to get .7mbps. I avg about .4mbps. This may have something to do with iphones sharing the same 3g. I really miss wimax as I used to get it almost everywhere I go. I live in the bay area.

Funnily enough, slower for me here in Long Island. I'm lucky to pull over 512k down and up here in my office. I was often getting higher then 1mbit but it's sprint so there was always fluctuation.
I never really had any complaints with Sprint speeds on 3G but after playing with this phone on my office wifi for most of today - I wish LTE was around already, this hardware really deserves better speeds.
it depends on what tower I'm connected to. at home (South Philadelphia, pa), it's nice and zippy. at work (Port Richmond, Philadelphia, pa) it's awful, but that seems to be the trend near my job. Verizon was almost as bad, everyone on t-mo and metro have issues, and at&t is terrible, as well. i don't know what the problem is, Sprint even has a dedicated tower only a block from my job.

I'm actually getting better speeds on my s3 than any other sprint phone EVER. I consistently get over 1mbps where on my iPhone and gs2(on 3g) I would never even get over 600kbps. It makes not having wimax or lte that bad
I am assuming it has to be Sprint because my wife just bought Evo 4G LTE and having the same problem .

As a reader of several forums, it is apparent to me that there is a pattern of such anomalies being reported by some end users of Sprint's LTE-capable phones in some areas. Remember that these new devices right now are connecting to the legacy EVDO and 3G network, which is in the process of being replaced completely on a localized basis in Sprint's Network Vision rollout.
Because these anecdotal reports are sporadic, and seem to affect more than one LTE device design, while most users report no such problems, I suspect that something is going on with the interaction of these devices with the under-construction network locally. Hopefully this is temporary. The phones are supposed to work fine with the legacy network, and with the under-construction changeover, but I suspect there are some issues.
Sprint has not owned up to any such problems. So we just don't know for sure. Personally, if I were one of those affected, I would not accept a two-year contract beyond the 14-day trial without concrete commitments from Sprint to fix this.
3G speeds are faster than ever in my area. (Jax, FL)

I wish I could get 3g speeds like that from Sprint, and that is why I am switching to Verizon.
Below are the screenshots of 3g speedtest.
Sprint on the left, Verizon on the right.
It is highly variable on location.I was driving home in traffic through Staten Island and the speeds varied from 2 mb down to .4 mb down and 1 mb up to a low of .2 up. Tried it at four locations. The worst is by far my home in Jersey, .4 down, .2 up. Thank God for Wi-Fi.

I got an EVO 4G LTE and returned it after 4 days. My wife got one at the same time. The MAX download speed I ever got was like 300k. Averaged about 50k.
My S3 on ATT LTE gets 20mbps.

I beat that speed on 3g with my Sprint GS III in the Bronx, and my Photon in Jamaica queens NYC. To all of the people that switched to Verizon at a time when Network Vision is rearing it's head is a shame. Their lack of investigating the issues will cause them to pay more for the next 2 years while people like me will save lots and have unlimited data.

I live in Orange Country, California. There's Wimax blanketing the whole county. I love it.
Unfortunately, no LTE yet. ETA mid-next-year.
I, recently, upgraded to the S3. I tried it out for more than a week. I love the phone with all its bells and whistles. However, because there's no LTE in my area, I was connecting to the 3G. And, it's horridly SLOW.
So, I decided to switch back to my S2 Epic Touch and take advantage of the Wimax speed until LTE comes to my area.
Am I crazy? I'm wondering if anybody else have had the same experience.
You're not crazy at all. I'm currently in Orange County too, specifically Orange/Garden Grove. I love the 4G at my work office. My 4G pulls 8mbps down, inside the building. But LTE rollouts in OC shouldn't take much longer, I'll be ready to buy a Galaxy Nexus or S3 when it does.

Yeah, me no loco!
I really like the current generation of phones. For instance, the EVO 4G LTE has one of the best camera. The aperture is F2.0. Wow! It's awesome for me, because I frequently take pictures of my little daughter. But, that too, I quickly returned, because I couldn't stand the horrid 3G speed.
Yupz, I'm also in Orange County enjoying great 4G WiMax speeds. Not gonna upgrade to an LTE phone until LTE actually gets here.
I Live in craptastic Oklahoma with no 4G I however visited Orange County a while back and was shocked at how amazing the 4G was. At most places it proved faster than the wifi I could use. Can't say the same for a recent trip to St Louis.
Funny such big cities have to wait on LTE, mine will be live by Xmas time and I'm in the sticks. But mines included in like a 1/4 state upgrade covering about 4 major cities and 20 smaller cities. I'm just trying to decide what to blow my upgrade on

Frankly, if Wimax and LTE is not available in your area and their 3G is your only avenue, i wouldn't recommend Sprint at all. "Unlimited" data is irrelevant if you're speeding along at a horrid rate. Smartphones need a decent network connection to function at all.
Don't get me wrong, I love Sprint. Their customer service is great. You can get a live person (from USA) customer service within 30 second when calling in. And, their online customer service chat is fantastic too.

It's still a great phone. They might just keep selling it until NV is fully rolled out.
Samsung will keep supporting this phone with software updates until it reaches it's end of life age of 18 months. I would hope they keep software updates coming until the 24 month mark.

I can probably see us getting key lime prime or whatever android upgrade is coming out next. There's literally no reason we can't update if it's not a major update... If it is a major update then we'll probably get a value pack update like the OG SGS if they decide to not give us the full update.
Anyways... I've been saying this since forever but really.
If you're in a non-lte area with wimax and LTE deployment is not coming within 6 months then stick with your current wimax phones.
If you're in a wimax area or non wimax area with LTE coming within 6 months then update when you start seeing NV upgrades or increased 3g speeds (3g speeds will increase before LTE goes live) as LTE should come relatively soon as 3g speeds indicate fiber or microwave backhaul.
If you're on the fringe of Sprint service and get ****e coverage/service then switch to another carrier and come back in a year or two where sprint deploys LTE 800mhz and fills up all those holes.

All markets are being shuffled thanks to the SoftBank investment in sprint. There is really no more set dates nor time frames anymore. In fact, Samsung, Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, and all the other vendors and subcontractors are moving all over areas regardless of market boundaries. Most work is being done in out NE, East, South, Gulf, texas & surrounding areas along with steady progress in Los Angeles (and surrounding counties) and the San Francisco Bay area.
