[Q] Really confused!!!! - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

So I'd very much like to root my phone. The problem is, I don't know where to start. I've been reading on how to do it, but I see all this lingo that I don't understand. I don't know what an Hboot is, or a fast boot or an RUU, or anything like that. Those are just letters to me. Do I start with s-off or what? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Found the noob corner.

Yeah man. That would be greatly appreciated. But I could probably save you the trouble. I'm running 2.3.4 Gingerbread. And I guess the only way I can root it is with an xpt clip? I think that's what its called. But, if you know something I don't (VERY likely) I'd very much like the info.

I think before you do anything, you should just read this forum for a week. Try to make yourself familiar with the words and what they mean, what root does for you, and so you don't completely destroy your phone.
I felt the same way as you when I wanted to root my phone, but I read and read and read. After I did all that reading, I read some more. THEN, I was finally ready to root.
It really is a very easy process once you get going though.

It's not code.. If you want to see code, decompile an application lol. I suggest just doing to research, the tutorials are VERY straight forward. And if you don;t understand what the directions are saying, get on an IIRC chat, or wait for knipp to help you. Root isn't worth bricking your phone.

Linux is an (awesome) OS alternative to Windows or OSX. A good beginner distribution is Ubuntu 11.10. Don't get overwhelmed- it sounds like you have some research to do. We all start somewhere, and google is your friend There's a lot of helpful people here who don't mind n00b questions, so learn as much as you can, then ask people anything you still can't figure out. (myself included)

Overwhelmed is definitely the right term. As for the OS, are you referring to the computer or phone? And I appreciate the help.

Well, Linux can be run on a lot of things. I was referring to the computer OS, but Android itself is built on linux too. That's why a lot of people develop with desktop linux. Check out Ox's noob corner sticky in the general section, and read through the posts- there are a lot of terms explained.

Easy rooting with 'Simple Root' (EVO 4G) - Also possible for Desire?

I am sorry if this should have been posted in general, but I think it has to do with development.
I just found some info about a program called 'Simple root', currently only for the Evo 4G. From what I have read it is a program to root your device with just a few clicks (so noob proof).
I wanted to notify you about this, first of all. Second, do you guys think it is possible to make something like this for the Desire? Or does the one for Evo also work for the Desire?
I am really a biiiiig NOOB regarding rooting etc, so this would be perfect for me. And I think a lot of other noobs would be happy as well.
Again, sorry if I did something wrong here (duplicate thread, wrong section, etc)
Kind Regards, Mark

Yeah, it should be kept as elitist as possible. I think only people with 10 years coding experience and a self compiled version of their own linux kernal should be allowed to root their phones.
Seriously, come on. Making it friendly is not a bad idea. I know what I'm doing, and I'd still rather press 1 button over all other current options. It makes no difference because I had no trouble following rooting instructions from r1 up to r6. I just think simpler is better.

i agree with last post but....
nowhere in development does it even explain what things like dalvik cache or kernels actually. i reckon alot of people here into flashing and tinkering with their phones are just following instructions. ie there's a difference between a qualified mechanic and someone that messes around under the bonnet at the weekend.
in terms of rooting i found this guide the most useful, it has all the files you need and has a VIDEO walkthrough. SIMPLE really SIMPLE. requires no linux, coding or anything.

XDA is a resource, a good resource is that, but it is not complete. Even Wikipedia is not complete, if you think about it.
Copying everything to one place will just cause redundant (and possibly outdated) information. Let the people who know what they're talking about, do so (i.e. Cyanogen).

So the current version is unfriendly? Another reason against making this process wholly autonomous is that you'd then have to waste someone else's time writing an application to fix the USB issues, because there's going to be people who got used to the easy of a giant button labelled "Click here to root" so now do not know what adb is.
Simplification can cause loss of information. Suppose the case comes around where the program crashes in a rare event, but the adb connection stays open. It's also far too cumbersome to catch every error, such as an invalid goldcard or the SD card being out of space. If the rooting process was a kernel exploit, this wouldn't be a problem. See below.

This is a completely different argument. You have assumed there is a 1-click rooting method available, which there isn't (yet). The only way your argument would hold is if there was a kernel exploit available currently that gave you root, but you only got it uncompiled and had to do the legwork yourself - which isn't the case. The actual argument was about converting the existing method to a few clicks as possible.
It's easy enough as is. We're not iPhone users after all, we don't need big shiny buttons to understand

Hiya. I need some expert advice

Soo.... I have had android phones for about year. Now I have the epic and I love it a lot.., but I'm hearing about rooting and ROM'S and all this other stuff... What is it? And by doing these things will I damage my device.? I need to be clued in big time.
well before you get dinged for posting this let me try and give a link that may shed some light
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700
Well... that guide on what everything was helped a little bit but it was all kinda confusing seeing as I'm new to the terms and whatnot. It basically sounds dangerous though and if I accidentally "brick" my phone I am going to die what are the positives of rooting my phone? And also, why would I get dinged fo posting this???
Cuz is posted 1000 times and u need to do your homework and start reading starting with 1click root is your best bet. And don't be afraid this phone is almost impossible to brick like I said almost and good luck.

Because technically this is supposed to be a developers board. They want you to learn the basics elsewhere and come here to develop new software.
And also we have people asking "what are root and roms" pretty much every other day. And then new people come and don't bother to read the threads that already answer their questions or use the search to find answers. Instead, they expect someone to start giving them the answers from scratch all over again.

If you can't afford to be without your phone for a day or can't afford to replace the phone if it becomes damaged, then do NOT mess with it.
Most circumstances all this is harmless/recoverable, but if the phone is a necessity (or not yours, ie parents), I wouldn't mess with it.
The only thing more annoying that seeing 50 post threads consisting of 48 people commenting on "wrong section" is threads from people that just messed up their parents phone and -now- it's an emergency.
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067
That should cover pretty much everything you need to know to get started and research stuff on your own.
Ummm thanks to everyone? I appreciate the advice and I'll try to figure this out. I'm just a newbie here (obviously) and I didn't know the ropes about how to find out "basic" info... Thanks for the links that were posted as well. Also, for the person who said something about this being my parents phone...? This is my phone.... and I paid a lot to get it and I don't want to damage it
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Ohh... and also I just believe I'm going to leave my phone as it is... I don't see the positive benefits of rooting it. Plus I don't want to damage anything
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
That's probably a good idea. You shouldn't make any major changes to your phone if you don't understand what you are changing.
Oh yeah, no benefits whatsoever
WHY SHOULD I ROOT MY PHONE?
Rooting offers several great things including, but certainly not limited to, access to hidden features, total customization, better battery life, and overclocking. It gives you control over the device that you paid money for in the first place. The devs here are great at finding features that the manufacturers left out or disabled and making them work.

Root my Verizon galaxy nexus

Is there some type of service where you can bring your phone in and they upgrade your Verizon GNex to 4.1? I live in the south Tampa Bay area. I am tired of being a pawn for Verizon to play with. Thanks. Having a nexus device has not been what I thought it would be.
Just learn how to root and upgrade it yourself, that's 95% of the purpose of this phone IMO.

I understand that is possible to do it. I would rather have someone walk me through it in front of me. People pay me for my expertise and I respect other people for theirs.
There's no service and 4.1 won't officially be ready for vzw gnex for months. There's plenty of well thought out and put together walkthroughs - even one click methods. Droid-life's guide is extremely easy to follow, as are several threads here. I'd recommend using a manual method though so you better understand what rooting and unlocking are actually doing.

If you really aren't comfortable doing so...
My guide is a great start.
If you read through that and are still confused...
I can TeamView to your computer and get it done for you while you watch.
It'd have to be late at night..
I get off at 1:30 mountain standard.
Or the weekend at any time.
http://www.teamviewer.com/
Send me a PM if you like to do that.
You'd be better off OP finding someone on here to teamview you like it was suggested and getting you there that way if you want JB.
There is no service, as someone else also said, just people on CL who might offer to do it for you, but yet again, they might be amateur at best and charge you unnecessary amounts of money.
I assure you I know what I'm doing.
And I've TeamViewed numerous people to help them root or "unbrick" their phones.
No charge...and I help you learn along the way.
Edit:
And we'll back up your applications and such along the way so you lose as little as possible.

I have read a TON of articles and none of them are written in a way i can truly understand what i am doing. I have a mac and want SIMPLE, STEP by STEP instructions. I cannot find it. In all examples there are assumptions the reader knows what they are talking about and lack of clarification on how the mac instructions are different from windows. If so many people can do it, why can't someone just layout the steps for doing it. The reason most people wait for the OTA is because it is not a straightforward process.

Been through all that stuff already...
As I have said before... why go to all the bother of posting the same stuff again and again?
I have spent the last 3 weeks looking around from site to site picking up bits here and there then eventually back to where I have started... albeit a little bit wiser...
I'm obviously missing something here...
Replying with this is as bad as spam.!... I have seen it on umpteen posts, over and over again, like a broken record.
If I had spent more time on the zx spectrum and the bbc which we had in 5th year before i left school I would not need to come on to this site..ha ha. but as we were not as lucky as you lot help is something that is greatly appreciated!
Rather than gloating how good I was, I would be coming on here to help rather than to belittle... otherwise what is the point of being a senior member with all this knowledge.
But this is something that comes with age... As we get older we realise....
Some day you will look back at yourself and think to yourself.
You will remember this post or some other that someone will surely post when frustrated with replys like this.
Read why you get short answers, because your lengthy reply clearly shows you haven't, and give the video another watch too, then you might understand why your thread about an existing thread is highly annoying.

I, believe it or not am trying to learn but that is why we ask questions, albeit, stupid ones to you lot in the know!
Even the best of us will have to eventually ask a stupid question... It comes to us all... you will remember this!
You are so much in the know, then answer the question that I started with...
As most of the people that get through this initial test seem to be more helpful..
Maybe one day I will be able to help someone new as there will always be
And be a bit more constructive.

Awww, come on... He is only trying to be helpful. All he needs is a little guidance. He does have a couple posts helping a few people with replacing the cam.apk
Where did he get it no idea - but he is trying to help.

Dude, I know you want to help but it's starting to get annoying seeing that your answering the same thing members before you have already replied.
You gotta practice those refresh skills more.

For the very 1st time I was afraid to do all this rooting and etc. One Day I finally decided to root and install custom ROM. I was even worried what if I bricked my device as it was still under warranty. Just 3 months had past. I was upset because I didn't get an official ICS update.
But I promised myself that if I root and install custom ROM successfully then I would surly help others.
Whatever I know I just answer it and what I don't I just ignore.
If you still think I am wrong then Report it.
I might not be an old member here But I made this promise to myself to help others if I can Because there was a time where I was standing at their place.
Not trying to pick a fight buddy. This is not the first thread you do it in, that's all I'm saying. You are o.k. in my book. Keep it up and don't let these two old grinches dampen your spirits. I did put in my 'no coffee disclaimer'.

No Bro we are not fighting and I am not taking you wrong in any ways.
I forgive and forget :victory:
I would only say your always right and I'm might be wrong. I respect senior members
Might be your right from your side but I try to give my opinion on what I have experienced.

GLADS, I am in no way trying to pick a fight. I am just saying that having 55 posts you should know that to help peope out you have to point them in the right direction. Saying always "...the Hack Kit..." does not help anyone.
Also saying: "...you should have had a hard time..." does not either. If you really want to help, then point people in the right directions, provide links, explain how to do things. We all came here as noobs, but some still after 300 posts. The difference is who wants to learn and listens to other users and who doesn´t.
