Hiya. I need some expert advice - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Soo.... I have had android phones for about year. Now I have the epic and I love it a lot.., but I'm hearing about rooting and ROM'S and all this other stuff... What is it? And by doing these things will I damage my device.? I need to be clued in big time.

well before you get dinged for posting this let me try and give a link that may shed some light
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700

Well... that guide on what everything was helped a little bit but it was all kinda confusing seeing as I'm new to the terms and whatnot. It basically sounds dangerous though and if I accidentally "brick" my phone I am going to die what are the positives of rooting my phone? And also, why would I get dinged fo posting this???

Cuz is posted 1000 times and u need to do your homework and start reading starting with 1click root is your best bet. And don't be afraid this phone is almost impossible to brick like I said almost and good luck.

Because technically this is supposed to be a developers board. They want you to learn the basics elsewhere and come here to develop new software.
And also we have people asking "what are root and roms" pretty much every other day. And then new people come and don't bother to read the threads that already answer their questions or use the search to find answers. Instead, they expect someone to start giving them the answers from scratch all over again.

If you can't afford to be without your phone for a day or can't afford to replace the phone if it becomes damaged, then do NOT mess with it.
Most circumstances all this is harmless/recoverable, but if the phone is a necessity (or not yours, ie parents), I wouldn't mess with it.
The only thing more annoying that seeing 50 post threads consisting of 48 people commenting on "wrong section" is threads from people that just messed up their parents phone and -now- it's an emergency.

Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067
That should cover pretty much everything you need to know to get started and research stuff on your own.

Ummm thanks to everyone? I appreciate the advice and I'll try to figure this out. I'm just a newbie here (obviously) and I didn't know the ropes about how to find out "basic" info... Thanks for the links that were posted as well. Also, for the person who said something about this being my parents phone...? This is my phone.... and I paid a lot to get it and I don't want to damage it

Ohh... and also I just believe I'm going to leave my phone as it is... I don't see the positive benefits of rooting it. Plus I don't want to damage anything
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

That's probably a good idea. You shouldn't make any major changes to your phone if you don't understand what you are changing.

Oh yeah, no benefits whatsoever
WHY SHOULD I ROOT MY PHONE?
Rooting offers several great things including, but certainly not limited to, access to hidden features, total customization, better battery life, and overclocking. It gives you control over the device that you paid money for in the first place. The devs here are great at finding features that the manufacturers left out or disabled and making them work.

Can't find launcherpro. Help?

I had to go to work after I installed launcherpro, so when I hit the home button I made sense my default. Now I can't find how to make launcherpro come back when I hit the home button. Help?
Go to settings, press on applications, and then manage applications.
Find HTC Sense, press on it, and then press the Clear Defaults button.
Now when you press the Home button, you'll get the list of launcher/home applications again.
Thank you (this might be the most helpful site of all time haha)
Anyway I can get sense widgets to run on it? I really liked the htc sense standard clock with weather/weather animation.
Or a good free substitute. I'm good with either.

This if my first smartphone, I have a very limited knowledge of computers, and a friend recommended this site because he said it was a great place to learn how to get the full potential of my phone. I've looked through the past 6 pages and the only questions I've been able to answer have already been answered because they were basic "where's the link for" question. Explain to me how I'm supposed to contribute if I can't learn by asking...
well, you could start by learning to use GOOGLE to search for answers to these questions, and when you find something worthwhile, you can offer to share it here..
The best way to become proficient at ANYTHING is to research it and solve the problems yourself...you'll be amazed at how easy and gratifying that is, and, then, you will have something to share here with others..
"Sharing is caring" works BOTH ways..
Have you installed AppBrain on your phone? Have you gone to the website?
Have you searched for "replacement widgets" for EVO on Google?
The options go on and on, you just have to put a little mental effort into it, and you'll be amazed at what you'll find
Had YOU asked (instead of assuming) you would have known I did look and I didn't find any good replacements to the sense clock that were free (I'd like to know my options before I try something like beautiful widgets). Yes, I used google
and I've never heard of AppBrain.
And I hardly consider the THREE questions I've asked on this board to be detrimental to the community. I'm new to Android phones okay? I'm glad you're all big and bad because you know what you're doing. However, this was part of my "researching" that I should apparently be doing.
Oh, and only because your know it all attitude bothers me: the best way to learn something is to teach it.

In life there are givers and takers..which one are YOU?
Everything I learned about computers, cell phones, and everything electronic was done by hard work and research ON MY OWN..I bought a 386 computer many many years ago and sat up every night until 2 or 3am reading and practicing on it so I could learn and be able to advance my skill level..I've done the SAME thing with most other new technologies over the years, and, even though its tough at times, when you learn how to solve a problem on your own, you are on your way to true intelligence.
The problem with people like YOU is that the minute the going gets tough, you want someone else to do the hard work for you..
People on this board and every other board will always help someone out who tries to find answers on his own FIRST..
This is sad. Why are you so intent on making me feel like my life has been one giant virus, sapping others? That tells me you regret the fact that there's an easier way to do what you did, and you're jealous. And you shouldn't be, you will have a VASTLY greater knowledge of computers than I ever will because of the about of time you put into it. So...chill
While that's a beautiful story, that tells me one thing: you had/have WAAAY more free time than I did/do. I'm glad your morally opposed to someone asking for help, but the fact of the matter is you HAVE to ask for help when you have limited resources. Should poor african countries just "figure out" how to pay for TB medication when their economies are in ruins? Why can't they look to people with EXTRA resources for help GETTING THEM STATED? My limited resource ? Mine has been time. Balancing school, athletics, job for tuition, and squeezing out a social life robs me of free time. I don't have time to spend 5 hours a day researching about a phone. It'd be cool if I did...but I don't. So asking for help getting started is my plan. If you don't like that, then ignore me.
And again with the assumptions...child, if you knew HALF of what I've accomplished in my life you wouldn't say that "going gets tough" crap haha. My accomplishments have just been in a different field than yours

Hi there everyone, my name is Alex and I just got my first smartphone ever, an Samsung Galaxy S2 and I would be grateful if someone could help take it to another level. Root, optimize, enchance it's "power", so on and so forth. I will really appreciate all of your help. I just heard of you guys from a friend, and believe me when I say "I AM NOOB!!" I don't know anything about rooting/ unlocking/ jailbreak/ etc.
Please leave me a message.
With deep sympathy and respect,
Alex.
what version of the GS2 do you have?
there are different forums for some different variants here on XDA. Once you identify which version you have, you can go to that forum and sniff around. read as much as you can, and you'll figure everything out pretty easily
You should start by finding and posting at the CORRECT section. I'm very sure that all sections have their own guide on rooting and flashing.
Devices are kinda like cars... if it is your first.. spend some time exploring what it can do already before you get into making it do more. Then, when you know your way around a bit... dig in!

Very well said my friend
If this is your very first Android phone (nice choice by the way!), you'll want to spend at least some time familiarising yourself with Android and its workings before plunging into anything here. Some of the stuff available here for the GS2 is incredible, but it can also land you in a lot of hot water if you don't understand what you are doing before you try things.
Take your time and enjoy it 'stock' for a while. Learn what rooting is/does, pick a couple of 'favourite' custom ROMs, and read through their threads (entirely) before doing anything. This will give you a good awareness of what to expect as far as bugs and hiccups are concerned, and how others have got around them or fixed them.
This is a fantastic community, full of fantastic Development. Make sure you stick to the rules, post in the right places, and if in doubt... read!
Enjoy, and welcome to XDA

Stop the insanity

So many ROM threads exploding with people who flashed their way into a whole bunch of trouble, and don't know how to get out of it.
Hopefully these predicaments are the inspiration many need to learn basic ADB commands after installing the requisite programs/drivers on their cpu. The trouble could have been avoided in the first place by not blindly flashing without reading the well documented issues they may encounter.
1. Read the thread,
2. Read the stickies,
3. If you occasionally like getting into trouble, at least have the proper tools available to get out of it.
4. If not, use search button.
couldn't agree more. what the devs do has taken a lot of work to make stable(ish) for everyone but it can STILL screw your **** up. so people need to be careful.

Edit: just tried to thank you, but I'm thanked out for the day apparently.
If they can't read the original thread, you expect them to read this one?

this is the reason why i always tell ppl not to spoon-feed noobs answers, cuz they wont learn anything and will only mess up their phones and then beg for help by creating useless threads or post in dev threads..on the other hand if ppl didnt answer their question they will be forced to read and learn thus no more useless threads/posts

Haha that's why I stopped helping people in Q+A. I used to help with the whole "Help I'm bricked" topics. Not anymore. My opinion is don't mess with root system files than CAN brick your phone if you don't know what you're doing or at least how to recover from it manually should a problem arise. Let em sweat it before they finally search and figure out ADB. Which they will. Their first instinct is to come and just ask for help. After an hour of 0 replies and the need to use their phone now, they will search and they will find what they need. Not that it matters because you have people here saying just use the toolkit to fix it. Almost every single thread in Q+A has at least one use a toolkit reply.
Idk to be honest I just stopped giving a damn about anyone but me lol. If I tried to help every single person boot looping I'll be on XDA 24/7. I got a nexus, I jumped the gun & used a toolkit. I boot looped. I searched and I figured out what I needed to do to get back up & running. As far as I'm concerned let them do the same. That's the way it is today. Everyone wants to be spoonfed. They only want the end result, but don't wanna work for it.

I agree they're not bad at all. People just shouldn't be so fearful of, or think that learning, terminal commands is hard. Posts like the one that was linked are a great starting point, thanks for taking the time to author that post. They can pick up where the toolkits leave off when someone's in trouble.
It kinda frustrates me too. The only reason why I have a low post count is because I know how to search and I can get my self out of pretty much any sticky situation with experience/searching. I don't understand why people automatically blame the dev for something they didn't know what was going on in the first place. I have maybe a 1/10 of the issues everyone else posts because I do the proper steps before hand or I go into it knowing what is already broke. If it is an unstable ROM then why bother complaining, you should know that not everything is going to be perfect.
Same here on the posting count. I read about what I'm going to do, can't afford to brick and buy a new phone.

Try working for a cellphone company. I made an old lady cry because she came in screaming at us saying to give her a new phone or cancel her account because it won't ring. Her HTC Hero had all of her contacts set to "Send to voicemail". Once I politely explained there's nothing wrong with her phone or her service, she started crying and said she's disappointed in me because I took away her reason to be pissed and now she doesn't know what to complain about.
Some people truly do not deserve smartphones, and it's a sad fact that companies are now pushing so hard to place expensive and intricate technology in the hands of users who were among those that couldn't even set the clock on their VCR.

I love when I'm on Google+ and someone goes on a community and asks what the best ROM is without saying what phone they have and or carrier, then people start naming ROMs. I'm like wth is wrong with you people. Or someone might say I'm on the Sprint S3 and others will just start naming ROMs for other carriers like its perfectly fine to just flash a ROM no matter what model of phone you have. I hope this video ends up helping new people instead of just making fun of, and pissing someone off. I was new once as everyone is or was. But I felt like I read until I mostly understood what I was doing and why. I've seen a lot of bricks lately and if I can prevent one, this would be worth it. Lol. By the way I found this video it is not of my making just so everyone knows.

Yes, I read for a month before rooting my Epic 4G and STILL was sweating through the process...how these people can just grab a phone, root and flash a ROM not for their device is beyond me.
I did the same with my evo shift, and then again with this phone - read, searched and then read some more. I've never had a serious problem. There's a wealth of information here and I'm grateful for everyone that lends their time to develop and/or help us get more out of our phones.
I remember just rooting my device. Reading everywhere and making sure the stories coincided. Triple checked my model number etc, this is not a $40 device...

Like the noob in the video says, lots of people just tell noobs that it's easy to root and flash ROMs. Most of the time, it's implied that the process is easy providing that the noob reads and learns on his/her own. Unfortunately, inference isn't universal, and a lot of noobs think "it's easy" means that it doesn't matter what they flash, it's all the same.
As a former comp. sci. major, I had enough experience with computers to know that it wouldn't work that way, so I read as much as I could until I could practically flash ROMs in my sleep before even risked I messing something up. Most people aren't tech heads or comp. sci. majors, and all phones seem the same to people who don't understand phones. If they were really different in the noob's perspective, he/she would remember whether they have the LG Optimus or the Keyocera Echo. If someone doesn't realize that there's a huge difference between an HTC One vs. the Samsung Note 2, why does it matter to them which forum the ROM is from? I mean, "it's so easy!" Why not flash the first ROM they find?
Sorry for the rant. I'm someone who tells his friends that rooting and flashing ROMs is easy, but only if they're willing to read and learn on their own before jumping in, and I warn them that they could destroy their phones if they're not careful. I then reiterate that flashing is easy once you learn enough not to brick your phone and offer to help them find all the info they need. Most just decide it's not worth the risk, and they settle for the stock experience. That's how it should be. If you don't want to spend the time learning it, then don't spend the time doing it.

I read for about a month for my GS3. First I rooted, the unrooted/triangleaway'd and odin'd back to stock to make sure I knew what I was doing. Then I took another 2 weeks to read up on ROMs, and then I finally flashed one. The ONLY times I've bricked my phone are more or less on purpose, just because I like tinkering, and I always fixed it myself. I don't even know how people can just start flashing either I was so tedious about it, still am.
My parents got smartphones before I did and their phones are on GB still, they don't even know that android versions go higher than GB (or what GB is) they think their phones are the bees knees just because they're android lol, it's just as well though because they never tried rooting them.
Edit: I'd also like to add that I was extremely paranoid about backing up my phone the first time I flashed my first ROM. I used TIBU to back up onto my external SD, then I copied that folder to my computer and also uploaded it to dropbox and google drive, and then I made a nandroid of my stock phone which I still keep on my PC just in case.
"Flashing a phone is not the same as using a toaster."
Words to live by.
I was on my g2x for almost a year and then I had to wait 2 months before I got my s3 after release, but in those two months I kept checking every s3 thread on the root process to see if it was like the g2x method which it wasn't. People who just get a phone and think they automatically turn into a phone expert cuz they got a good phone is just plain retarded. Moral of the story read before you post/ask questions

Sincere Gratitude

This thread may end up locked as irrelevant and to that, I will not object but I have a few things that I must say to those in this community who have played a hand in the game that is may life.
I would ask of a moderator intent on locking this thread to allow it at least a few hours to be seen by any who may wish to publicly respond, although it seem unlikely that one would, and obviously this request is nothing more than a request and I will not feel discontent if my request is denied.
I have a great number of things that I thought I wanted to say to you all. All such things were negative until recently.
First of all I would like to say what I feel is important regardless of how comical this will be to the less honorable of you involved because I must say it:
I forgive you. Of my own free will I fully forgive any wrong doing done against me by any and all who participated.
Secondly: (and this part was even more difficult for me)
I thank you. While I feel as though I have (almost literally) been through hell and back again in the last eight to ten months I have come to the point where I can forgive the actions against me, which leaves me in such a state that I have no option but to thank everyone for all the things that can be seen as a silver lining.
Through the course of these events I feel I have learned things that I would never have even considered otherwise and as a result I feel I have grown in a way that will benefit me and anyone with whom I am associated. Although I know not what your intentions were, you have changed me in ways that I can call positive and for that...
Thank you.
I will overcome.
Oh my... I must thank you again already.
As soon I clicked submit a weight that cannot be measured was lifted from me and I honestly cannot say that anything I have ever experienced was as intense or liberating as this burden dissolving.
Although this may be Stockholm Syndrome, I have nothing but love for you, my captors, and hope to continue to grow in such ways.
I should also point out that while I have obviously been unable to stop you and probably remain powerless in this regard; you have no cause to continue... it will not affect me any longer and you will only harm yourselves.
PS
I have decided to burn all of the evidence that I have collected including some IP addresses and phone numbers that were not easy to obtain.
I will seek no vengeance.
Everything ok, bro?
If you need a person to talk to, hit me up.

For the first time in long time I can answer with an honest... yes. Everything is OK.
Thank you for asking.
I thought that storm had already passed a while back brother.

I don't know that will ever end. I am tested everyday in ways that near break me every time and it almost cost me my humanity.
I think that someone has distorted and warped a sacred philosophy to the point where they no longer understand it....
"Do what though wilt"
Is only the one and true law if your will is not compromised by the sickness that is jealousy.
One's will is only divinely backed if one has no ill intent.
One's will cannot be stopped be if the outcome benefits all involved.
Let me find a quote from a more informed source. It can be summarized well by one smarter than myself.
and honestly, regardless of whether the storm had passed or if I temporarily rested safely in it's eye;
I had not yet forgiven so it all still existed in full effect insomuch as the way it affected me.
Forgive me but, what exactly did you do wrong?
"Give wings to your fancy, for fairer than any picture that you can paint with thought is the future that you can claim with will. Once you have imagined, once you have chosen, say, "I will." And there is nothing on earth that can hinder you for long: for you are immortal and the future is obedient to you.
You say death may stand in your way? It will not.
You say that poverty and sickness or friends and enemies obstruct your path? They certainly will not. Nothing can, unless you permit it.
But you must choose, and never again must you wish for anything for you need only say, " I will. " You must say it always in thought and in deed, not only in these words now.
And henceforth never for a moment must your purpose change, but your constant intention must turn everything you touch in line with it.
Then, if that which you have chosen is not harmful, it will be yours before long."

If that was knowledge I possessed; I would have had no issues.
Addendum:
but whether or not it was your intention to, your question just made me realize what was missing from my post and I thank you for it.
I am sorry
I have always maintained the belief that I must have committed offense to warrant punishment but I have not yet ascertained my "crimes."
Regardless, I am sorry.
I think a better question would be, "What is provoking this thread?" or, "Can you enlighten us to the reasons behind what you are posting?"
To be completely honest, I am completely lost, and a bit worried.

I'm with you on this.
What ever happened, or is happening, PhAkEer, some of us are lost on this. Not that it's any of my business, just an observation.
And as Gray offered, if you need to vent you can hit me up as well. My GTalk is the same name @ gmail

I'm sorry. I know it probably doesn't make much sense and I was very vague on purpose.
Trust when I say that its no longer important how or who and about all I'll say about the what is that: for quite some time a large few or small many have put a lot of effort into effing with my es and I think I nearly let my cheese slide off of my cracker a couple of times.
and thanks for the offer
(LMAO the funny part is that for a lot of the time a fresh point of view would have great but I had very bad luck trying to explain it and even worse luck getting help... so I think I just... gave up on asking )
Then again.. maybe some of the "What" does need to be discussed... because the modifications people were able to make on my phone were disturbing and maybe if I knew what information to provide we could tighten the security for everyone else so these hacks don't get any more out of control.
I have erased/burned most of the stuff that could have implicated anyone as a gesture of good will, but I think I did save some of the modified apps in a couple of backups.
Any thoughts on what I could upload that could be used?
An example that we could both benefit from and protect again malice :
Whoever was involved was able to permanently root my phone in param/.lfs to such a degree that even Sprint's technicians couldn't remove it.
It got to the point where they would just hand me another phone when I walked in... no fees or anything.
We don't know one another my friend, but through Christ I pray you'll be fine. And what doesn't destroy you can only make you stronger.

I remember this. You were attacked via phone some time ago. I remember the thread that really started as a simple question and turned into you and others figuring out you had been hacked. Am I correct?

I don't remember a thread quite like that. That does however sound like a combination of a couple threads, maybe?
The only thread I posted about me being hacked was an embarrassing fail in which I thought the situation was more serious...basically, I bit some deeply buried misimformation hook, line and sinker and thought that it was uncovered fact.
I would enjoy it all if it were a (b) movie I was watching.
This forum is probably a good place to ask: does anyone know anything about removing hacks that are coded into images stored on a protected partition?
Sorry that I don't know enough about hacking to identify specifics. It took me forever to even realize where they were and I have only ever been to modify /param/.lfs with the use of an application.
I don't mean to disrespect but you sound plain crazy bro. If you've been hacked and think that your identity is in jeopardy, contact the authorities and your bank. This kind of thing happens all the time and there resources available to prevent any harm being done.
That being said, you are an important person around here and have done a lot of amazing work. Thank you for that. I hope you can ease your mind because you are coming off as a little unwell.
Life is to short to have spent these last many months worrying about this. Go on a camping trip or something.

I don't understand? I mean no disrespect either, but I have no idea how anything I have said would make me sound "unwell" or "crazy."
I would not be offended by whatever clarity you give me there.
All I have said (basically) is that I have learned a lot and forgive malice because I have moved on.
If I were forced to describe that in a word, I would choose, "healthy."

By that I basically just mean paranoid and kinda out there. Like you are spun.
Did someone here send you a file with a Trojan or something? How or why would somebody want to hack your phone?
Do you presume they are still an active member here and are reading this thread, and that is why you made it?
Like you said, it's vague. That's why it comes off a little odd, to me at least.
