Has anyone experimented on things like battery usage with K9 email app vs the native Gmail app? The problem is that I would still need to "sync" contacts and calendar but I don;t really have to have "push" email like with the Gmail app. I could sync every 15 min or so.
Will battery life be better with K9 ?
Try MailDroid...It's also free and in my opinion better.
I am using k9, i freezed gmail, no battery problems for me

Hi
I had this app set up with hotmail, ive just got rid of that account and set it up with my Gmail.
Question is this....when running my hotmail i had the background set to black, it has now reverted to white (default) and i cant find the option to change back to black !!
cant find it in the settings when in K-9 or in any setting in my main app menu !!
Where the hell has it gone....maybe im going blind !
Any help !?
In the Accounts menu,

Thanks Mate
Another question for you guys,
Is K9 a good alternative to the GMail app in terms of speed/push emails and battery usage? Does it use IMAP idle?

Yes, K9 pushes email (IMAP) and polls (POP). I would say I receive my email instantly (Gmail and University accounts). Not too sure about the battery but I think push email would drain the battery less no?
As far as I know push is better, that's good to hear, I just now need to find a comparison of the GMail application and K9 and which is better IMAP or Exchange.

I seem to have a problem that my contacts are not showing when I type their names in the To column. When I do this in the Gmail app, it will give some suggested email addresses Does anyone else have this problem?
Oh, and to answer your question, K-9 is definitely faster (in fact, my Gmail app doesn't seem to push at all? How do I set it to push? Do I have to set it to auto sync? Even then it takes like a minute or so where K-9 takes about 7 seconds)
is this generally deemed to be a better app than the standard one installed for POP email accounts? will give it a try
Is your K9 using activesync or imap?
I believe you need autosync on.

My K9 is using IMAP and it's fine. It pushes my gmail account. I was asking about the Gmail app but you're right, I needed to turn the autosync on. Even then, it doesn't push. It takes about a minute or two for my email to come where it only takes about 7 seconds with K-9. Now I'm concerned about the contacts not showing in K-9 I might have to use Gmail app after all
I would use the GMail app for everything but emails. You can select in options what you want to sync and not sync easily.

I only want my Gmail app to sync with my calendar but not email. How do I do this? I go to Settings>Account & sync>Google but I only have the option to Sync now or Remove account? Can't press menu when I reach this either Am I supposed to manually press sync calendar each time?
Press your gmail account under the list of syncable items.
Anyone migrate to K9 how is it?
Hey
What's the best way to integrate the push gmail in to the HTC mail programme? Seems like I got two points Accessing the same account lol
you cant.
The Google mail application uses push. the other mail program uses pop/imap and is pull.
There had to be another mail program as the googlemail program is not open source, and therefore the widgets cannot access it.
So the native mail application doesn't have IMAP Idle? You can use Exchange with it though.
I heard K-9 has IMAP Idle but someone will need to confirm and compare it to the gmail application.
Yeah which one do you guys use?
So does k9 work with the widget? I'm sure having both running will kill my battery and plus 2 notifications is annoying
Oh and total random, is the led flash multi coloured?
Hi - is there a way to disable Gmail push and change to check emails to feching in intervals using standard Gmail app?
I don't believe so.
The best you can do is to switch of Gmail syncing altogether and pick up your emails via HTC Mail (or another mail app).
Question though - why do you want to do this anyway? I use the Gmail app with 3 separate accounts, and have no issues with battery life etc, so I can't really see the benefit of not having push email.
Regards,
Dave
hi, just wondering if anyone uses K9 Mail for their Gmail instead of the native Gmail app? and if so, do you think K9 uses more battery, less battery, or about the same?
i was surprised to see that K9 supports a type of push notification, IMAP IDLE, and actually receives Gmail messages as fast or even faster than the native Gmail. i have turned off any kind of polling by the app, and still, it seems, maybe, to use more battery than Gmail..... anyone have any thoughts or experience with this?
I cannot comment on the battery consumption by K-9, as it doesn't show up anymore (in Froyo EB13) as one of the apps using a certain % of my battery.
What I did notice with the stock e-mail app on Eclair and K-9 in Froyo, is that it stops polling for e-mails all of a sudden, sometime - that's quite a risk. To have the app check e-mails again, it needs to be initiated manually when this happens. It is probably Android, which causes the issue. I mentioned this issue wondering what your observations are.

Hmm, that's not good if it suddenly stops checking for mail. So far I have only used K9 on Eclair, and only for Gmail..... for this it worked great. With Gmail, it doesn't have to 'check' for mail, but rather sit there idly and have messages pushed to it when they arrive at the server..... I was amazed at how well this worked. I just upgraded to EB13 but haven't used K9 yet.
As for the stock email app, I wouldn't trust it at all, doesn't work very well from what I can tell..... even when manually checking for messages, it sometimes won't fetch them, or will take very long to do so. Sorry but that's all the experience I have with these, lol. When I did use K9 on Ecair, it would show up as using 4 or 5% of my battery, whereas I don't remember seeing Gmail showing up at all...... and, my battery just didn't seem to last as long when using K9, even when using push only.
Looking for your thoughts? Which is better on battery life utilizing push?

I always wonder why people use the Gmail app. People must have more than one account. So why not use an unified inbox, so you can view all your emails in one place?

Personal preference. I like keeping my inboxes separate. Also, I'm fairly certain the stock email app doesn't handle Gmail-specific functions such as importance markers, priority inbox, and labels.

Using Google and Gmail is less taxing on your battery. If you setup your Gmail account (on a computer from the Gmail inbox) to poll your other accounts, it will then push new emails to your phone. That means your phone is only active (in terms of getting emails) when a new email is being pushed to the phone verses the native email app that will poll your pop3 accounts on the frequency you select. It will do that polling whether there are new emails available on your server or not. Over at Android Central is an article titled "Using Gmail as your own personal push mail server". It explains exactly how to set this up.
I've been doing this for about two years now and love it. I think the Gmail is better than the native email app too.
Good luck.
Gmail app, hands down. You're going to miss so many functions compared to the basic email app.
I didn't even know there was a stock email app..
Gmail all the way.
Gmail of course. Never even touched the stock Email app on any phone I've had.
I'd only use the stock email app if I had to connect to an exchange server. Otherwise, Gmail can pull your email and label them - there is your unified inbox, with the best search in the world and many more features than the stock email app.
Gmail no doubt about it

I wish Google would put all of its efforts into just creating one amazing email app instead of two ok apps. I need Exchange support so I'm forced to use both apps and honestly, neither compares to the experience I had on Windows Phone... Search was much better and faster on Windows Phone as well. The main advantage to Gmail app is the labels function, after that the clients in Androids competitors win in speed, zoom and ability to change views like swipe to view all unread messages, and swipe again to view starred messages.
Stock Gmail preferred, but have to use both since Yahoo won't connect to Gmail unless you pay them a premium fee. Yahoo account is basically collecting spam and an occasional message from someone who hasn't updated their contact list in a while. And c2dm is more timely and battery efficient than scheduled polling and sync.

hmm well I have been using the stock email app forever. Mainly because I needed exchange support, first for school and now for work. But I got tired of exchange hogging the battery so I just have all my emails forwarded now to my gmail account. Might have to give it a try.
Seeing as I only use Gmail on my phone the Gmail app does the job (and I delete the stock app as I never use it)
Lol I freeze the stock mail app first time I flash a rom

Using both apps here.
Gmail app for my "real" email and stock for Yahoo and Exchange.
What's the stock email app?

Have you guys ever had a look at the gmail app for the iphone? It is gorgeous! And same functionality as well. Ours works very well but I would like to see a little UI overhaul

I pull other accounts into my main Gmail account, so everything ends up there (e-mails from other accounts automatically get labeled accordingly), and I can access everything through the Gmail app on my phone.
