FC's 2wk after fresh install - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The last few months I've been experiencing an issue where I'll install a new rom after wiping data, cache, and dalvik with everything running smoothly and them after two weeks I get constant FCs. Happened after CM 7, gingerbread debloated, and sky raider. Would formatting the device solve the issue or is that overkill?

Format everything in the mounts and storage menu in recovery except sdcard and emmc. Also wipe dalvik cache from the advanved menu. It is a good idea to do this before installing any rom or before restoring a nandroid backup.
It could also be a certain app your using that is messing things up. What exactly fc's is it certain apps all the time or just a bunch of different apps randomly?

Everything is force closing ...help

I am running the new stable cm7....after reinstalling all of my apps with titanium backup pro almost everything is force closing. Even core apps like browising and messaging. My Widgets also stopped working properly. Going into recovery and fixing permissions and wiping cache is a fix that works for a little bit then the same problems start occuring again. I've re-flashed my rom and same problem. What should I do?
What ROM were you using before? If this is your first install of one of the CM7 ROMs did you do the factory reset/full wipe first? If you had a previous version of CM7 installed and just installed the stable over it were you using a theme that you flashed? Flashing over a themed version of ROM with an upgrade will cause force closings as most themes make changes to the framework. Also with Titanium Backup did you by chance restore any system data? This will also cause force closings as the old system data isn't compatible with the new system data.
If you restored data with Tibu that could definitely be the issue.

I had cm7 rc1 and I went from that to rc4 before stable I'm almost positive I wiped my memory both times before flashing....I did have a theme when I had rc1 but as I said I wiped it. I did install system data with titanium so maybe that is the problem...what should I do now?

I would try doing a full wipe (data/factory reset, cache, dalvik, format /boot, /system/, /data, /cache) then reflash the ROM and restore ONLY apps with TiBu and see if that fixes the FC's.
Yeah, I've heard restoring system data only causes problems and is highly advised against. I restore apps + data, but just my downloaded apps, not system ones. I don't even back up system apps tbh. Don't exactly see a reason to.

Hey guys i really appreciate all the help yall have given me....ill let u know how everything works but im def not installing system data...thanks again
If you had RC1 with a flashed theme and only did a wipe of cache and dalvik cache those will not fix the changes to the framework a theme does (does not pertain to the CM themes included with theme chooser). You have to either do a full factory restore/wipe or restore a backup that doesn't have the theme on it. I learned this the hard way using RC3 with the vivid theme. I flashed RC4 over it and I had all these force closings. I then restored a clean backup of RC3 then flashed RC4 again and it worked fine.
Ya, i did a full facotry wipe along with cache and other things. Also didnt get system data with tibu. So far everything is working as it should (fingers crossed)
Another source for a cascade of force closes is if you let the data/data partition get to full. Happened to me this morning. Usually I don't let my data/data partition get below 14 or 15 Megs but for some reason I let it get to 212 Kb. Everything was force closing. Ran a cache cleaner and uninstalled a couple apps and everything went back to normal.

Thank you, ran df -h and found /data/data was full. Cleared some stuff out and now I'm running smooth again!

how to wipe system

some roms ask that you wipe system as well as the normal things. ALl i see thats close to that is format system. is this what theyre talking about? i just wanna make sure before i do it in case it messes up my phone.
What recovery are you using? There should be options to wipe data/cache.

latest cwm
is that the same thing as wiping system cause it said to ipe data and cache then the dev seemed to make an effort to mention to wipe system too. heres the rom.

its cm9 kang
Format removes the partition, wiping all data, and creates a fresh system partition in it's place. I always choose format all(except sdcard) when switching ROMs that use a different base: I.e. GB to ICS, AOSP to SENSE, or even different sense versions(2.x to 3.0 or 3.5). If any doubt, just do a full wipe of cache and dalvik, then format all and you'll be safe.

Wiping dalvik cache?

I use link2sd on my Xperia Play (NXT ROM) and thought I'd wipe my dalvik cache in CWM. After doing so however, my phone booted but displayed the low memory warning and some apps were missing. I rebooted again but my phone kept repeating my boot animation and didn't boot. I restored a recent nandroid backup but was wondering if anyone know why this happened? Also, is there a way to restore only my dalvik cache from a nandroid and get things to normal?
Thanks

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
AW: Wiping dalvik cache?
Isn't there normally an option in CWM for this under Backup/Restore if you choose something like Custom Restore?

I don't think there is. You'd have to restore data completely if you want to restore the dalvik cache i think. In the end i ended up buying Titanium Backup pro and extracted my apps and data from a nandroid backup i made of the system

Not sure if you are doing the install correctly
Lets review...
You run a Titanium Backup backup [or other app based backup not talking nadroid here].
You restart to recovery
Wipe cache
Wipe Dalvick Cache
Go to Mounts and storage [CWM] and format /System AND /Data
You go back to main menu
You Flash the ROM
You Flash GApps Pack [there is a 2013.01.08 I have seen that is specifically for 4.2 and not 4.1 BTW]
You restart and let it boot and wait at least 5 min before touching the phone
You then download and install Titanium Backup Open it, grant root
Then you Restored ONLY User apps and data [be sure to NOT RESTORE ANY SYSTEM APPS OR DATA]
This should have you running fine if this is your process.
If you are using TWRP and used the advanced backup/Restore to restore only /data by unchecking the other stuff this WILL NOT WORK it will restore the original /data and anything new your new install placed in /data will be removed and prolly why there is a problem.
If this is the only type of backup you now hoave if you download titanium backup pro [like $6 USD] then it as an advanced option can read out things from a nandroid backup done by either TWRP or CWM and restore apps based on the data there and the only way you should restore from that back DO NOT use TWRP to restore /data.
Basically TWRP images the entire partition and just puts that back exactly as it found it before whereas runnin titanium installs the apps back WITHOUT affecting anything that is new and already present [unless its a user app that exists in the backup and was installed by the ROM then you may end up with an older version, but then if that does happen don't panic open market and go to my apps [open market hit menu key tap my apps] and it should list any and all updates based on what is currently installed and can then update the affected app maintaing your user data that was restored by the titanium restore process., but it should warn about newer and older apps I believe.
TWRP method is good, but only if using same exact ROM and you had an issue [you deleted something wrong and caused a problem or otherwise need the data back EXACTLY as it was before, and disregarding any changes since].
Ok I did all that besides the go to mount part in recovery an when I reinstalled my user apps an data I rebooted back into recovery after it sat for an 5-10 min

Do the mount part and format both /system and /data. After restore to be absolutely thorough if you restart to recovery then have it wipe cache and dalvick cache one more time [should not be needed but may help].
You should ALWAYS format /system [and cache and dalvick cache] when flashing ANY ROM [ be it a different one or an updated version] and you really should do /data as well; though as long as it is a compatible ROM [JB to a different JB for instance] you may not need to wipe /data, but if you notice odd issues not helped by usual fixes [like my Swype stopped using the user dictionary and re-installing the app completely did not help only re-flashing my ROM and being sure to wipe both /system and /data and re-building from ground up [re-downloading my apps via market>My Apps [swipe My Apps screen to the left and there is a list with EVERY app you ever downloaded in the order it was downloaded which can help] fixed it [usually happens about once every month-ish little issues build until I can't stand one and format /data on an install]. Kinda personal pref on that, but if moving to a New ROM you really should try to do a Titanium backup and still wipe /data as ROMs do install some things there.
Ok I'll do that an thanks

[Q] Dalvik Cache

I'm looking a automated way to wipe dalvik cache....any ideas
Umm why? The dalvik cache usually does not need to be wiped unless you are removing apps via file browser or terminal. As far as all your other caches (system, apps, etc) there are apps out that will do cleaning automatically.
Sent from my daughter's CLONED Og Evo using xda-developers app
Hmmm, I don't know any automatic way but there are two manual ways that are easy. First is through recovery mode. I use Amon Ra Recovery to do so. Usually the recovery has a section called Wipe. Be careful what you press in here. Second, is through an app called Titanium Backup. Only the pro version can do dalvik cache clean though. I bought it but I think you should stick with the recovery way.
Sent from my PC36100
Titanium Backup is a thought but it only gets rid of unneeded entries and doesn't do a true wipe like going into recovery. I was looking for something I could set up to run automatically once or twice a week. For me, my JB roms just run better if I can keep it wiped and was hoping to set something up to run during the night maybe twice a week.
Sorry than, I don't know any other way...
