Convince me to root and rom - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long story short, I got a new epic because I broke the screen on my old one. I was running srf 1.2 and genocide 1.1. I liked how you could putg themes and custome programs on, also getting rid of bloat ware. But I did not see that much of an improvemet as far as performancee goes. The 3g speed I think was actually a little slower on my old one and it did not seem to load anything that much faster. So I don't know if I want to do it all over again.
So people convince me why I should.

No one can convince you. Either you do, or you dont. But, lets put it this way. I stayed stock for 6 months, 5 on DI18, and one one EC05. Ever since I rooted and started flashing themes and mods, I could never go back to stock.

Root, sure. Look at all the things you can do once you root and install CWM, like backup and restore, adblock, delete system apps, etc. And it only takes a few minutes.
Rom, nah;
I keep trying other roms but I always end up back at stock. Nothing is as rock solid reliable as the stock roms, and unless you can live with some stuff not working or you want to constantly tinker I haven't found anything I like better than stock.
Now when CM7 is finished ask me again.

Stock has limitations and battery drag......drove me nuts......Thanks to XDA and SDX....that has changed my life!! Right now CM7.1 Kang running around 3200 tweaked, and just updated new fixes. There is so Much you can do with Gingerbread around the Corner we are going to see much more. Thanks to developers and our comments/suggestions.
Sooooo.....like Duhhhh...why wouldnt you want to root!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[Q] Just un-rooted my EVO to apply 3.29 update... WHY ROOT NOW?

I feel bad but I just un-rooted my regaw_leinad rooted EVO using djR3Z method so I could apply the new update. I know there were other ways of doing it but it just seemed the more sensible way for a noob. I really wanted to root to get rid of that FPS cap anyways. I didn't do one single thing to my EVO while rooted besides download a screengrabber app that I didn't even use... I am still learning all about what is possible with root on Android, and until I find something totally mind blowing I think I'll keep stock.
Can anyone give me any reasons why I should have root besides custom roms??? I love the idea but not the headaches it gives me...
And, if custom roms are the big idea, what benefits will that give? Don't they run a little finicky anyways? Not all features are enabled, e.g. 4g?
Please list here.

Custom ROMs are usually faster and have more features and customizations than the stock ROM. There are also tons of root-required apps that let you do crazy things to your phone like get free wireless hotspot, backup all of your apps with data and Market links, and change the apparent density of your display.
I'm somewhat of a noob and just made the switch.
WiFi tether
Remove some sprint apps
Custom boot animations
Like the above said, custom roms show a performance increase
Love the Quick Boot app
There are a bunch of threads around with more root apps you will most likely like.

General, the benefit is freedom. if you waited a litttle bit you would already be able to flash the exact same rom rooted which is readily available. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=653
Good luck though.
Also, rooting takes like 2 seconds now that unrEVOked Forever is out.
A rooted phone nets you more options. There's no drawback to it. Why not?

Not everyone roots their phone - just the people here So, if you feel no need to root your phone, then don't.
I'm not a power user or speed freak so uncapping the fps isn't a big issue for me. I originally rooted my phone so I could use wireless tether. I'm staying rooted because I can play around with my phone a little more - change the boot animation (and turn off the sound), remove the Sprint apps that I don't use but that turn off automatically, and back up my apps and data and monitor my battery usage.
The custom roms are a quick way for me to accomplish my needs. I don't really like the Sense UI (which surprised me because I always though it was great-looking), so the roms give alternative ways to set up my phone.
Help with OTA
Hey guys. Okay I saw there is a update on xda. I'm using unrevoked3. Do I need to delete Unrevoked or just download the zip file that was released. I'm talking about about the deodexed and rooted.Im still lost on how where to put the updated file at? Please if anyone is in my boat and have had good results please tell me,im a noob, beginner, novice.
There is got to be someone who can explain in plain english lol..
Thanks everyone
Yes, I do feel crappy about it... I wish I was still rooted. I know the rooted update was available, but just thought that the OG update would run a bit better..?.. I guess I wanted to unroot to learn how among other things too. Believe it or not, doing that taught me a lot about hboot and recovery. At least I know I can always root again.
And YES, I HATE SENSE!!! But, I was reading on Cyanogen that CM6 had problems with the 4g and had a few bugs. But that vanilla android look is what I want!
Also, when non-rooted, is there no recovery? I clicked back into it just to check and it gave me a red exclamation mark over a phone...

Hey, thanks for the info... But along with all of the "Customness" and features aren't there also, bugs that go along with it? Like random reboots, and battery issues, and some other stuff?
Yes I love hacking stuff and know that this is all part of the fun, but I think I just need to research a little more. If you can't tell already I'm kind of paranoid about screwing things up. I rooted and really wanted to flash CM6 but didn't have the balls to. Maybe in a month or so i'll redo it.

Most of the custom ROMs are very stable and have better battery life than the stock ROM. As long as you make a nandroid backup there is ZERO risk to flashing a new ROM (assuming you don't like pull the battery out while flashing or something), so you can try one out for a few hours, and if you don't like it you can instantly go back to what you had before. Simple as pie. Give the major ones a whirl and see what you like. I know that there are some HTC ROMs themed to look like CM6 that have working 4G.
I also avoid cm6 because of the lack of 4g. Instead I use Vaelpak because it has minimal sense but enough so I can have my 4g. I'm thinking of trying Virus' mostly senseless rom.

When you mention the vanilla android look, what exactly are you referring to?
Is it the Vanilla theme and icons? -De-Odex roms would allow for custom themes that give the vanilla android look i.e. MrPuffin's Vanilla AOSP and Vanilla theme for Sense UI
Is it the android launcher? -Launcher Pro and ADW launcher are quite nice replacements to the Sense launcher
I'd think that if you didn't like the HTC Sense look, you would have kept root and just themed your phone to look Vanilla. Then again, it all comes down to what you believe provides the best user experience.
And regarding recovery, I believe Clockwork and Amon Ra require root.

Yes, by Vanilla Android i'm talkin Nexus One. Those themes look pretty good though. I'm already jonsen for root again and it's only been a half day.
Launcher Pro? Doesn't that just overlay Sense and therefore cause a bit of a slow down, use more memory, and possibly more battery. (probably not noticeable though..)
Yes, Clockwork and Amon_Ra require root. I was just wondering if there was a recovery in NON-ROOTED. When I'm in a non-rooted EVO at hboot, and select Recovery I get that red Exclamation mark over the phone and have to pull the battery.
Thanks for all your help!
Whoa thr new kernel allows up to 53 fps but std is 8+... on netarchys' kernel it was about 54 - 56 with a std of 4... at least that is how it behaves on mine.

- why feel bad?
- if the next statement is true, then the FPS cap must not have been an issue; else you would have done a google search on the issue and corrected it.
- if this statement is true, why feel bad?
- i dont find the need for so many custom ROMs (not like back when i was running on WinMo6). once you have 'root', adding/removing apps is straightforward and most of the ROMs are just a "here is my theme and apps, it's built on someone else who did the low level tweaking". custom ROM just makes it easier to get closer to what YOU want for an applist and themelayout. i like cm6 and dont' like theme's so life is easy for me.
- CM6 is AOSP. this means they will not use propriarty code (like Sense). for the EVO it also means the 4G radio software has to be written from scratch since there is no opensource 4G stuff to use yet. if you pick a Sense based rom (ie: anythign that doesn't refer to itself as CM6 or AOSP based).
Note: AOSP Like means that it is a Sense based ROM but it's been made to look/act similar to the CM6 or AOSP ROMs. 4G and Radio and such should work normally.
enjoy the free time associated with being Root-less.
Well, I'm re-rooted. Used the unrEVOked method. It was just so easy, there was no reason not to. Really want to get on cyanogen but waiting for the 4g.

Bored

I think I'm going through ROM Boredom.
Seems like I've run through just about everything, and I need something new that gets me excited again.
I had all the best Froyo ROMS, and ran Koni III for a long time as a daily.
I've run the 2.1/3.0 ROMS, but they're really all the same, more or less. Going from Synergy back to MikG, just for the 2.2 updated version isn't turning me on. Although I do prefer the 3.0 stuff over the older versions.
I have no desire to run MIUI and have to deal with all my apps on the desktops (I hate that)
I'm still a little gun shy on CM7, after the rash of White Screen issues, which looks like they've subsided, plus, CM7 just doesn't really appeal to me. I like the spit and polish of sense.
I guess I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Unroot and return to stock? Who knows, of could be the "change" your looking for?
Lol.... Oh HELL no
Swyped From The Hippest Phone Using XDA Premium
I've been a little 'bored' as well .. at first I thought I was more or less content. Been jumping around lately and been on MIUI last week or so with a sweet theme. I use ADW EX anyways, so you get the drawer and don't have a cluster f*ck of apps on the screen. I never understood the hate, and with a theme you can really jazz it up. Been on it a few times but never hung around. Might just stick here for a while. It's pretty sexy.

Does ADW EX take away form any of the other desktop customizations, etc on MIUI?
AdW on Miui is great. I really like the drop down notifications and all the setting options you can retain with the mix of the two.
If you get really bored and want to try something different not on XDA, there is that UD rom. I've never tried it but have been close a few times.
That launcher7 on the market for free could hold you over for an hour or two also

Hmm, such as? I know it has different options for transitions and such, but as for that and maybe some widgets, I'm not too sure of the other little 'goodies.' Unless, of course, you mean themed icons and what not ... in which case, I've been using a specific set for what seems like ages. So, again, not sure. I've always just slapped another launcher on as I don't like the apps being on the desktop by default. ADW EX, obviously, has different transitions as well and the list for MIUI 'appears' to have similar ones ... so not sure how different they all are.
Haven't messed around with different lock screens as I just use Widgetlocker, so can't really comment on that either. I haven't had much time to mess around with the latest version (can't remember the last one I was even on) but I plan giving it a longer run this time around.
Might be worth checking out.
Sounds like we run similar setups with custom icons, widgetlocker, etc....
I might just have to give it a run, just for something different, and as long as the icons aren't on the desktops, then it loses the stupid iphone look.
One really good thing is going back to SBC AOSP kernels.
My battery will love me again.

Hipkat,
I was using UD 3.3.1 with the tiamat kernel for a long time (for me anyway) It was a nice change and was really stable. I only went to Synergy to see what the fuss was about ( and now I'm staying there for a while) I don't know whats up with it now though, Balckdroids site is down and has been for a while.
If you want to give it a whirl, let me know and I'll give you the zip.
I'll take a look at it. Thx!

OK, here they are.
Flash the UD rom first, then the GPS fix and google apps (these are newer than the ones bundled with the rom) then the tiamat kernel. You can do them all together and as always wipe cache/dalvik and data first.
Enjoy

CM7 isn't too flashy by default, but there are a ton of cool themes for it. And most of them use Theme Manager, which means you don't need to flash them -- you just install an APK and you can switch it up on the fly without even rebooting.
Have you tried using the kitchen to cook your own? I just did my own, but I can't flash it! Ha! No root!

SNS is pretty rad, 2.3, themed with Sense and NonSense, very fast and stable, no issues, crazy good battery life. And I get in the same mind games weekly it seems. I go from stock to custom 12 times over, back to stock, its an addictive habit that gets me in trouble with the fiance' most days! Just a thought, good luck!
lol, I'd probably work out more, if I wasn't sitting here playing with this phone almost every night....

Is gingerbread worth it over Froyo roms?

Hey guys im curious is there anyone who has been able to fully replace EC05 roms with one of the gingerbread roms availalbe? And in doing so keeping the stability, battery performance, and speed of the EC05 roms? I've personally gone from an amazing experience with ACS SFR 1.2 to Ginger Bamboozled and ERA hurricane rom and personally have not seen any benefits with keeping gingerbread. I notice no battery improvements and the phone has slowed down significantly. The only plus i've seen with gingerbread is the cool CRT off animation. Note i've never run the commands to stop processes that update in the background i.e. DRM and SNS, which from what I read make a fairly big difference with getting better battery life on EH17 roms. So at this point I'm thinking of going back to SFR 1.2 or another EC05 rom. Is there someone out there that can give me some useful tips on how to make the Gingerbread roms run smoother for me or am I just wasting my time? Also I used to get random Reboots on Gingerbread but i've noticed that it has stopped, odd. Oh almost forgot I use my keyboard all the time for writing emails for work and not having the skipped letters fix is so annoying. I want to shoot my phone sometimes.
Have you tried Spare Parts and setting all animations to FAST in it? I am on Bonsai B14 EG22 and my phone is about as fast as it was on EC05 ROMs. I do stop all processes when I first boot and have a few frozen with Titanium.

I don't care if that does anything for the actual speed or not...its a hell of a placebo effect. Another thing is you could oc with tegrak
As of right now, I don't see any advantage of using a Gingerbread Rom. I was in the same boat as you. I tried a few of them but due to the random reboots and keyboard skips, I couldn't take it anymore. I'm now using the Epic Revolution Rom and I love it. I won't be going back to Gingerbread till the official release.

Depends on the apps you have
I'm running the ERA OLYMPUS 1.6 EH06 ROM. I hoard apps and that's really bad for performance of the device and battery. I haven't frozen the SNS/Updates but I freeze the DRM every time I install a ROM anyway. I just managed to get all the apps that like running in the background to not do that by messing with the settings and clearing widgets. I can now last at least 5 hours on battery while actually using the phone. My battery life has been about the same on every ROM I've ever used. I would say to try this ROM with Journaling enabled and running Chris' new EH17 Plus kernel. I am also using the EH17 modem. Everything is working pretty well for me now.
No good reason to keep the leaks. However, if you are converted to ext4 and use the v6 supercharge script its as smooth and responsive as sfr 1.2 at 1.4ghz.

I've been dealing with the same dilemma the past week. I've found that there's really no pros to keeping the gb roms. Although I really like the theme on bamboozle as well as my quadrant stats. Speaking of which, can anyone tell me where I can get the SII lockscreen that comes with bamboozle? It's definitely my preferred lock screen. If anyone can help that'd be awesome thanks!
Thanks for good responses
Thanks guys for all the feedback, I think i'm being swayed more towards the EC05 roms until the release of gingerbread source files. I think the biggest thing now that look at it is the keyboard letter skips. I rely on my phones keyboard far to much to write really fast work emails and no matter how I setup my virtual keyboard or auto correction on TouchPal keyboard or Swype, its just not accurate enough and I waste more time trying to fix the auto corrections. Thanks again everyone and I really hope this thread assist others with making a their choices on which Rom to Choose or which version of Rom to choose. Froyo here I come.... now i gotta figure out if I want to go with Era or ACS lol.
In my opinion, no. After trolling all around using GB Leaks I finally came back to Froyo (Bonsai 4.1.3) because of the stability and speed.
I think its best just to wait for something official when it can be polished and tweaked with.
I too have been up and down the development pages, trying out different roms an modems, froyo and GB. Froyo was cool when i was using it, but I like the way GB looks. I actually had more problems with the Froyo roms than with GB roms, but that could be bc im getting better at rooting.
Right now im running RandomROM 2.3.4 on the EG22 modem with generation x theme. I get a couple of framework fc's throughout the day, but it doesnt seem to actually fc anything. I seem to just get the notification. battery life is amazing. I used to have to charge my phone after only 6 hours, even with light use. Now I dont need a charger until the end of the day, even with moderate to heavy use. I even use it as my wifi at home for xbox and whatnot. Touchpal's hardware prediction is pretty cool, although I havent really noticed much key skipping without it. I'm still new at rooting, so I don't do too much with oc and such.
I get about twice the battery life using RandomROMs hawk v4 vs any of the ec05 builds. Haven't experienced any TV's yet and only one random reboot after running the v6 script.

[Q] I need in depth real help figuring this out

So to start I have Fibromyalgia and as a result I have trouble understanding and doing some things. I have the epic 4g touch and recently it was running horribly, so I thought about restoring it and trading it in at best buy mobile, well even doing that I don't have enough money for a new phone so f*ck them.
So now my phone is restored, stock, unrooted and I need someone to help me figure out what rom to use because I need to theme it because the stock UI makes me want to vomit. I can't quite explain what I need or want all I know is I've previously tried just about everything and everything had some sort of a problem but it's been months so I don't know if anything new will do what I want or not. I just can't figure it out and need someone with patience and time to help me go step by step figuring out what to do.
I appreciate your help immensely.
The guy who will walk you thru it step by step is qbking77 and his YouTube videos. He also covers a lot of different roms in his videos. I suggest starting there and then asking questions once you decide on a rom.

What are you looking for in general? GB, ICS or JB? TW themed or AOSP/CM based? Toss out some ideas of what you're looking for theme and function wise and ill help you find something that fits you, even tho it might not happen on the first try cuz you may find something in the rom that bugs you or doesn't work that doesn't affect me.

ok, I hate ICS prefer G no idea what JB is...... Don't know about theme based.... all I know is I use LauncherPro and I have my wallpapers for background and widgetlocker lockscreen. I really wish I could manage MIUI to work because that's the only ICS I don't mind because you can do so much but it just refuses to work on my phone. I also can't OTA update my phone for ANYthing, even with it fully stock and unrooted it gets not even half way then stops and shows a triangle with ! I'm actually thinking of just selling this damn thing and going for the III because a friend has one and it's much prettier so I won't feel the need to go crazy changing things. I just don't have it in me to deal with such a vast phone. Give me too much rope and I'll just hang myself with it. I tried Calkulin ROM last time and it worked for a bit until everything was just ****, freezing rebooting not getting calls.... I just want a phone to do what I want it to!!! I tried starburst and it did nothing, haven't tried miui in awhile.... never had any luck with Cyanogenmod whatsoever. I don't understand how phones all made the same way can be so different and temperamental like people? wtf is the point of buying a specific phone if your friends does this awesome thing but you have the exact same phone and you can't!!!!

JB is jelly bean android 4.1.x the newest build. ICS has come a long way on this phone since the ff18 ota. Cm9 is really stable now that its on beta1. For TW themed I'd suggest blu kuban as it seems to be a forum favorite. I personally prefer aisle/cm based roms. I run aokp or paranoid android for the customization, theme manager makes changing the look as simple as installing an app, selecting it in themes and rebooting. from the symptoms you're describing with your issues and loading new roms seem to be from "dirty" flashing, not fully wiping in recovery before flashing the rom.

When flashing a new rom, make sure you wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache(under advanced menu in cwm) otherwise the issues you described pop up, Force closes, random reboots, lagging, freezing etc. Also make sure to use a "safe" recovery, there are several choices but I prefer el26+cwm5 or twrp.

ya I always do proper wiping and all that, I got my phone restored to where it was so of course back to all the problems I was having. I'm hoping I can just sell the phone and have someone else deal with it.

[Q] My introduction and help request- Im rooted, now what?

Hi everyone. I've been a lurker here for some time and I finally signed up. 1st off, I have to say that all you guys do an amazing job.
I used to have the Tmo gs4g and always managed to get all my questions answered just by searching enough. There was one thread that was particularly helpful to noobs. It was a basic walkthrough for your first root and rom flash. It even offered up a few kernals and ROMs that were good for your 1st flash.
Now I have the Tmo sgs3 and there just seems to be so much to sift through. I've been at this for the past 2 days straight and while I've learned quite a bit, I just don't feel like I'm confident enough to take the plunge. I've bricked a couple of the sgs4g.
I've managed to root my gs3, get CWM to stick by flashing it through ROM manager (still says I'm living in 1970 but I can live with that) and flashed the adrenaline injector.
I think I'm ok with the stock ROM. The only thing that really bothers me is waiting for the keyboard to popup when I want to type something. It probably takes about 5 seconds to come up but it feels like forever. I'd really like a kernal or a ROM that's close to stock that will improve battery life and give the CPU a kickstart, if that's possible.
Some of the ROMS look pretty cool (like Liquidsmooth and Darthstalker) and what they can do, I'm just a little worried I might get a little over my head with how complex they seem.
If any of this rambling makes sense to you, I'd appreciate it if someone could share the links of what I might be looking for.

The keyboard lag is probably due to all the stock bloat. I suggest buying TitaniumBackup. Not only to back up your app data, but it can (amongst other things) also disable the system apps that you can't disable through the built-in app manager. I love ROM Toolbox, but I've been noticing some problems with it lately. It's kind of a bug fest. Anyhow, use TiBu to freeze the garbage you don't want.
Make a nandroid with CWM, then:
Download Ashaman (debloater) here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1732039. It's easy to use (flash with recovery), and safe. There is another debloater in our section, but it's a bit over aggressive imo.
If you want to stay stock, that's fine, but I recommend a couple things, one is flashing a kernel, like this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2291368. You want "Touchwiz JB (4.1.1 & 4.1.2) VERSIONS:" from post 2.
If you have other specific questions, you can get me on Hangouts with the same name.
I did use titanium backup to get rid of some of the apps I knew I didn't need but I'll check out Ashaman (debloater) and see what else I can get rid of. Thanx for that.
Hey man i came from the GS4G too! I felt the same way and asking questions and plenty of reading is what led me to where i am today. If you're interested you should flash a custom rom+kernel. With a custom kernel, you can adjust how you want your CPU and other stuff to perform. And with custom rom, you'll get the best out of your phone, in my opinion. I'm running LiquidSmooth right now and I'm waiting for the Illusion update. If you need any help, feel free to ask, there are plenty of people here to help. If you like stock tw, you should try flashing a tw rom such as wicked, darthstalker, imfamous or any other 4.1.1-4.1.2 roms. If you like a pure google experience, flash a AOSP rom like LS, Cyanogenmod, or another 4.2.2 rom. It's up to you honestly but if you want to take the dive, always read the OP and ask questions if you're confused! Best of luck!

So if I decided to go with the darthstalker rom or liquid smooth, how do I know which kernal would b best for me? Trial and error? I've been reading up on them but I'm not always sure about what's compatible with what.

Most people seem to like ktoons kernal.
The two roms you've mentioned are very good ones but also very different.
Just know with liquidsmooth or any AOSP rom, your files in your internal sd card will get sent to a /0 folder and you won't have touchwiz features smart stay, camera, palm screenshot, nor wifi calling etc.
If you flash this it's fine(I've used LS, loved it) but just know if you don't like it, I recommend to Odin. Going from 4.2.2 to 4.1.2 through recovery has always given me fc's and reboots. I'm speaking from my personal experience, others may tell you different which is fine.
I'm just giving you a heads up before you flash liquidsmooth and think it wiped your internal storage, ask where's wifi calling, etc.
I wouldn't mess with kernels if everything is working fine.
Stockorama, Wicked, Liquidsmooth, Illusions, etc. All fantastic roms. Read OP's and replies just to make sure you know exactly what to expect.

Before messing with kernels, I'd start by getting used to some of the custom roms first. Try a few out for a few days each and choose the one you like best.
As stated, Darthstalker and Liquid Smooth are both popular choices around here. There's also the tried-and-true CM 10.1, if you feel more comfortable with it.
Personally, I'm using CarbonRom nightlies and its been pretty stable for the SGH-T999 d2tmo (T-Mobile SGS3).

So wifi calling doesn't work with any AOSP roms or just liquidsmooth? I'll read up on any rom I choose but I use wifi calling a lot and if that's the case then this just saved me a ton of reading. We've been having reception problems at our house so I've been forced to used wifi calling while at home. Tmobile claims it's my phone (they're sending me a new one this week even though I told them it's not the phone and that I really didn't want a new one) even though 3 out of the 4 phones in the household suddenly have lousy reception.
Since I'm getting a new phone this week, that brings me to my next question-restoring. Since you guys are constantly wiping your phones, what's the fastest way to restore it? I mean, restoring all the little settings like ringtones, homepages, etc... Let's say I flash a rom. Now Titanium Backup should take care of my apps but what about all the settings? Can I just go into CWM's advanced recovery and hit recover data? Is there anything else under advanced recovery I would want to hit?
Wifi calling is in touchwiz based roms only.
If you had several phones all of a sudden suffer signal problems, it will most likely be a network issue. Or they may be upgrading your area. Give it a few days to a week to see if it improves.
TiB can back up your settings too. Or you can just restore a nandroid backup and be done with it. Never heard of data recover options in recovery. Nandroid is the option you probably want.

If you need wifi calling, stay away from AOSP roms then. There's plenty of great touchwiz roms to try though so don't worry.
I use nova launcher so I make a back up of my home screens through nova.
I restore everything the way it was before after I finish restoring apps/data from titanium backup.
I only use nandroids(cwm backups) if something is broken. Otherwise I don't touch it.
Titanium restores your apps and data with apps if you choose so. I always restore game data, alarm settings, notes I've written, etc.

Go into CWM, hit recovery, advanced recovery, hit which ever backup you want then it brings you to a screen that says restore boot, restore system, restore data, restore cache, restore sd-ext. I'm assuming you can use that if you only want to restore certain things.
Correct

Well after much consideration and research I decided to start out with Wicked rom. It was a tough decision between Wicked and Darth Stalker but Wicked seemed like it might be a little more noob friendly (not to mention it has some really cool themes).
This is really exciting for me. I really get off on this kind of stuff. My gf always thought it was weird that I'd get excited every time an update was released. :victory:
Anyway, Thanx to everyone for their patience and help.

Great choice. Wicked v9 was my first rom I ever flashed, got to the rooting scene two or three months ago.
It's a brilliant rom and so much better than stock.
Enjoy!
