After I updated to stock Froyo, my phone started muting during calls. No face pressing of buttons, and the mute button wasn't on. It just muted itself, and the only way for me to fix it was to turn speakerphone on and off. I thought rooting the phone and putting a custom ROM (Syndicate Frozen) on the phone might help, so I did just that. The problem is still on-going.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is there any solution? My Epic is my main phone and it's done this on a few very important phone calls a few times already. Before I take it into Sprint I just was curious if there's a simple, less having-to-deal-with-face-to-face-tech-support kind of way.
Thank you. I apologize if this has been answered already.
Is the phone muting your voice so that the caller can't hear you, but you can still hear the caller?
I had the exact same thing happen with my Epic and I ended up having Sprint exchange it for another phone.
Out of curiosity, what happens if you turn on speakerphone?
Ahh, yes that's exactly what happens. They can't hear me, but I hear them perfectly fine. Usually what I hear is, "Are you there? Hey, are you there?" a few times before I realized what happened, and no matter how many times I tell my mom to just stay on the line and I'll fix the problem in two seconds after it dawns on me what happened, she always hangs up in a huff.
When I turn on speakerphone they can hear me right away, then I just turn it back off and everything is fine the rest of the call. It doesn't even happen every call, which is the best part. I'll be in the middle of a 10 minute conversation and it will mute itself, then the next phone call will last 45 minutes with no problems.
Does the mute icon show it's on? Did you try backing up and simply switching roms? If there's too much trouble, odin ec05 and take it in to repair if the problem still exists.

mine always got stuck unless i took the battery out.

Thank you for the tips, ya'll. I'm going to first update the ROM I'm using now (as there is an update out). If that doesn't help it's off to Sprint I go.
Thanks again.

when you go make sure its a corporate store they have the techs and tell them you already called customer service (dont bother calling them there gonna tell you to factory reset...........every time i have called i can hear that that most if not all are reading from a scrip) then the tech will try to get out of helping you by saying its the towers (bull sh$%) that the most popular answer you will get........ And for the bad news the phone that u will get is a referb
did you try to updat the PRL and profile?
AND FOR GOD SAKES if your rooted got back to stock 2.2 EC05
My phone did the same thing after the upgrade. It is random though. The phone mutes during calls randomly but mute button doesn't light and my face hasn't hit it. I've been trying to find out how to correct the problem, but my Epic was working fine until the upgrade.
I wasnt paying attention when flashing my kernel and accidentally put it in Phone.
So now i have no radio at all... I went back to the stock kernel and to zedo's the right way, and flashed a new ROM but it wont give me my radio back.
Does anyone have or can give me an EB30 radio tar that i can put in Odin?
Thanks in advance.

I'm in the same boat. My friend flashed the a ROM in Odin meant for the UK version of the Galaxy SII, and bricked his phone. Still starts up but no calls, no 3g/4g, no signal bars, no wifi.
For those who are having the same problem, here is what I discovered, you don't have to use heimdall to flash the modem.bin, just flash it in odin in the PHONE slot. Works perfectly.
The links to the modem.bin are dead.. does anyone have this please? my phones working again but no service thanks

Unfortunately the eg30 modem has not been successfully pulled from a phone.
Here's the eg12.bin.
http://db.tt/p4652Cdf
Many people, including myself have trouble with the EG12 modem. I realize this is your only hope right now, but test something out to make sure your not having the same issues. While phone is in deep sleep, screen off for 2 or 3 minutes, not plugged into PC or charger. Try calling the device from another phone, if the modem is effecting your device it will not ring while in sleep mode, or ring at the very last second before being sent off to voicemail.
I hope all is well for you!

Perhaps this is a issue that is connected with the LOS/Ghost LOS issues. I never experienced this until I read a post claiming the EG12 fixed LOS. I flashed and about 2 days later realized my device stopped ringing while in "sleep mode" We found links to EG30 but after Md5 checks they were the EG12 renamed. The day I found out I was not getting calls while in sleep I took the device to sprint who ordered me a replacement. Later on that night after working with mjcollum I came to the conclusion that EG12 was the cause or a huge contributing factor of my issue. Anyway, replacement has EG30 and I have no more device ringing trouble.
When this happens do you get the missed call notification? I did not...

Nope, no missed call notification. All I get is a pissed off girlfriend lol. I also have NEVER experienced a single LOS (with the crossed out circle) and I got this thing on launch day. This is the only issue that I have had with this phone.

lol That is exactly how I figured out the calls were not coming in while sleeping, pissed off wife! She said she called like 5 times in a row, then she called the landline asking WTF
PLEASE READ THIS FULLY BEFORE CONTINUING!
looks like all the modem.bin files out there are the eg12 version (as i flashed to fix my phone also)
and my mom's has the eg30.
on further inspection this creates a problem, even after returning to stock and resetting everything if you plug your phone into kies the eg12 version gives a "this version of the device cannot be upgraded" while the eg30 says "this device is up to date" (both were hacked and returned to stock to check this)
At the moment there is no way to get eg30 back (will update post when found)
EDIT
Let it be known if you flash eg12 at the moment you cannot go back. you most likely will not be able to get a new modem until sprint/sammy release an update. whenever that may be.
Some people are saying the eg12 modem is causing the phone not to wake from sleep to answer calls. at the moment from what i can tell this is a small percentage of the total number of people who have installed eg12. this issue may or may not be caused by the eg12 modem on it's own. but we cannot jump to conclusions and really do not have nearly enough data on the issue.
that being said I and many others do not have an issue with the phone waking from sleep either on or off the charger.
but it would probably help others if we could collect enough data to be sure.
So if you have an issue with your phone sleeping please post in this thread.
include at least: (these are mine)
baseband: EG12
Kernel: 2.6.35.8-lostkernelexp+
Build: Starburst 10.22.11
how often does this problem occur: NEVER
if we can get at least this much info together we can get a better picture of what's going on and take it from there.
PLEASE do not go complaining in the [guide] thread that is for instructions on how to flash not for phone issues.
also posts 53/54/63 may help
probably wouldn't hurt to read through the thread either.
Perhaps the EG12 modem is why my phone is not waking to take calls.
mine was doing that for a little while also but reflashing the stock-eg30 filesystem and kernel seemed to fix it and i havn't had it happen again even after all the roms and kernels i've been throwing at it lately. so you may give that a try. could have just been the dead spots in my house though so ??
I'm betting the first time sprint/samsung release an update for the modem we'll be able to hijack it. but until then i was hoping for a solution to see if it helped my weak signal in parts of my house.
just a note the modem.bin gets flashed to....

edit bs=4096 doesn't help
I went back to stock, no root and all. Even did a factory reset and made is to hands free activation again. I ended up restoring a nandroid from a while back, the kernel is zedomax V3, I have the min cpu freq at 400 and it will wake to receive calls just before the caller is sent to voicemail, lol.
you may give the latest lostkernel a shot and see if that helps.

I'm currently on the latest lostkernel build stable 1.0.2.0 and it still will not wake for a phone call unless it's asleep on the charger I also flashed the modem on the sticky about a week ago. I have great reception where I live (San Francisco) and I've just tested it five times. It doesn't wake when called unplugged. Minimum cpu is 200-500 asleep. I'm going to odin back to completely stock to do more testing.
Maybe try the non experimental build without overclocking?
Mine seems to wake on calls both on and off the charger but you never know.
Wish we could figure out a way to get a eg30modem.bin as that may be part of the problem.
my original was EG30
tried to root, but messed up my phone, then i managed to unroot back, now i have the EG12 version.
same thing here, Kies can't update the firmware version.
first time here, thank you so much for you guys hardwork, i was able to get my phone working again!
I am beginning to think that modem.bin is bad for our devices!!!
Many who have flashed it are not getting calls while the phone is sleeping...
what do you mean "sleep mode"... means when cell screen is locked?
I just called my cell from office, cell phone responses after two rings(from office phone), then another 3 rings(from office) to enter the voice mail mode.
Update: I just noticed I have the same problem after flashed....

Sleep mode is a couple minutes after screen goes off, phone not connected to USB or charger. All I know is while I am in sleep mode my calls do not come through. This is something that started around the time I flashes that modem.bin I bet many others are having the same issue but just don't know it yet.

The modem.bin isn't bad it's just an older build. The modem. Zip should probably be pulled so that this doesn't continue to spread. We're screwed until we get an official tar. Then the modem can be updated. The OTA probably won't fix it cause the upgrade path is EG30 to whatever the new build is.
We'll have to odin the modem. Bin most likely. Mine works fine. Occasional problems but not much. We just need the tar.....

I was going to suggest using the modem.bin from this thread, which I thought was EG30:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1284602
But then I downloaded the one from the sticky, ran a checksum and discovered both came out the same. This is the same one on ACS. So apparently all the modem.bin's are EG12?

You have the EG30 modem.bin?
If you have the EG12 try something, make sure nothing is running then manually turn off screen. Wait about 2 minutes then call your device....
if it happens to ring, try it again. Mine will ring sometimes, it will ring about a half a ring before the caller gets shot to voicemail.

This is the one I used, it is RG12. If you look around the forum people are noticing they are not getting call while screen is off. If it isnt this modem.bin then what can it be? Going back to stock does not resolve the issue either. I had my device 3 weeks now and this started arounf the time I odin'd the modem.bin as someone claimed it as a fix for LOS.

Tried all kernels, higher clocks, everything in the book, lol. Could just be a defective device, but I am leaning towards the modem.bin. Only because all was well beforehand.
yes, you are right. I tested couple of times, unless with data cable attached to charger/PC, it won't ring.

I agree with Cordell12, i think its the modem.bin file that is causing our phone to not ring while idle/sleep mode without being connected to a computer/charger. Mine started happening when i flashed the modem.bin file about a week ago. Sprint service center couldnt figure out the problem when i brought it in, so they're replacing it.
Hey guys... as it says in the title, I am having issues with my G-nex randomly losing connection/signal but then coming back again. From what I have read, this is a common problem... anyone have any tips? Also wanting to know if I flash a custom ROM if that would possibly fix the problem. Thanks!
Not necessarily the ROM, but the radios. Try that.
There are a few 4.0.4 ROMs for the LTE GNex out now you could try as well if you want to go the ROM route.
Is this happening to you? (See attachment)
If so.. I've been trying multiple radios and multiple roms all day without any progress, this still happens. Would love it if someone has a solution to this... I'd have having to send in my phone again.
The signal issues seem to stop when the phone is awake though... :/ But I'm missing a lot of phone calls since my phone is "off" when people try to call me.

yeah, that's exactly what's happening... it does seem to happen more when the phone is off, but I think it still happens when it is on. it is so weird! I went into the verizon store, one of the reps said that he had just been having this issue today and that he put it into airplane mode and back off again and it seemed to fix the problem... I did it, and it seems to have helped, but that was only about 20 min ago lol. see if it helps you!

Hmm.. interesting. The problem here is that this started on March 24th... :/ But, still trying Airplane mode, even though I'm not optimistic..
I emailed my provider, asking them for info, but a friend of mine has been working beside me for the past few days, on the same network with the same phone, without problem. So I guess it's time to bring it in..
Thanks for the info! I may try to put the latest rom/radio on it and see if that helps... if not i'll un-root it and send it in I guess.
I'm having a similar issue with my GSM model, It started when my phone was updated to 4.0.4. Phone signal suddenly drops and comes back again in less than 10 seconds. Sometimes it happens with 1 minute intervals between signal losses, sometimes 5 or 20 minutes, it's very random. After noticing the issue thanks to "Light Flow" that blinks the notification light in white when there is a signal loss, I installed this app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smartandroidapps.missedcall&hl=en) to track it properly. The results are very frightening, I'm about to do a full wipe in hopes that the issue will be gone :|
ps: like you guys, I did notice that it's very most likelly to happen while the screen is off. Actually, it has never happened while the screen was on.
Same here, post 4.0.4 update on my GSM GNex.
Found this explanation....
Well, for the moment ICS (any version) is making my phone unusable as a phone itself.
I saw some people complaining about the GSM hangups (including me), so if you let the phone sleep, you wont recieve any call. The caller will hear the same tones, as if you dont pick up the call. If you send an sms on a phone in such state, it will only appear after turning it on manually (often having duplicate SMS). When you turn the phone on - you wont even get a missed call, no signs of anything.
This problem is very hard to reproduce, it happens from time to time.
I've tried to flash any other ICS based rom on the phone - any has the same problem. The only rom i hadn't such issue is 2.3 stock/modified. But i want ICS!
Anyone have any thoughts, what can be causing this? I'm tired of this happening, people complain that the cant tell me something urgent, and i dont even know they wanted to.
UPD: There is a parial fix for this issue by Maruzko by installing an app that prevents deep sleep (but thats battery consuming offcourse).
I think that there should be some internal fix for this issue, only devs can help up with that.
UPD2: My opinion that problems that people have with clock not synced is somehow connected, coz when you turn on the phone in that state, you see the clock changing rapidly and stopping at wrong time, so changed title to include that also.
UPD3: There is an alternative way to fix the issue, but not much tested. Thanx to sideshow03.
Tests and reports are much appreciated.
Hey! I'm having the same issue as you. I'm surprised no one came up with a solution yet.

I have the same 'No response to a call' issue after flashing AT&T UCLJ3 rooted on a Rogers i927R Glide.
Essentially, after the Glide has been idle for a while, not sure how long, at least 30 mins I think,
there is no response from the Glide when calling it, and it goes to voice mail, but not straight away though.
I can hear a ringing tone from the phone I'm calling from, but the Glide just sits there in sleep mode.
Try several calls but the Glide does not wake up.
Haven't tried sending it an SMS when this has happens though.
If I then wake up the Glide manually, and then put it into standby again and call it, it responds as normal and starts ringing.
The thing is, it doesn't happen every time, sometimes the phone could be idle for 2 hours and still respond to a call, others times it doesn't after say 30mins on standby.
Hard to troubleshoot as its so intermittent.
This did not seem to happen on stock Rogers GB.

Yup, the threads are the same, but mine is older
Sad thing - cm and other jb roms higher than 4.0.4 have the issue aswell
Currently have the 312 min value with interactive governor - this does not help, some deep sleep problem not frequency related

It doesnt appear to be just a Glide problem with ICS from internet searching but there doesnt appear to be a solution anywhere.
I found a reference to using an App called Wake Lock which some have found may fix it but at the cost of some battery life.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImV1LnRoZWRhcmtlbi53bCJd
Choose PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK in the config apparantly.
Ive installed it but not activated it yet.
Still testing with WiFi sleep policy set to "Only when plugged in", where as previously I had it set to "Always".
Anyways, there are devices on ICS that do not have such issue. May this be connected only with the tegra2 platform? Even have no idea how is this issue called to search.. sleep of death? As i know, its the state, when device does not wake at all, even after pressing power. Not our case.

Good point, maybe it is to do with the Tegra 2 platform or the sub revision of this ICS 4.0.4.
Yes, 'sleep of death' seems something different, when ieven the power button does not wake it.
I think our issue is referred to as not coming out of 'deep sleep' when a call/sms is supposed to wake it up.
Yesterday I had WiFi sleep policy set to be on only when on charge.
So all day I was on 3G data not WiFI. I called the Glide intermittently through out the day and it always woke up.
Today going back to normal setting of WiFi Always on to stay connected to an access point when in sleep mode. Will see how that goes.
Next I'll try:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImV1LnRoZWRhcmtlbi53bCJd
Choose PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK in the config apparently.
I don't have any issues with that.. sounds like a sysctl or build.prop mod though.. that's all I have changed myself without the community here.. everything works well in ICS and I do run litekernel 1.1.1 which may also be a + for the no hang issue

I'm running CM10.1 and not having this issue.
I did notice something though.
Hypothesis: Each ICS leak came with a different baseband. So there is an I927UCLG9 baseband, a I927UCLH2 baseband, and a I927UCLJ3 baseband. UCLJ3 introduced some ABI change that the libsec-ril we're using in AOSP ROMs doesn't know how to handle (or it straight up just has a bug).
I currently have the I927UCLH2 baseband as I never flashed UCLJ3.
Could someone more wizardlike than me whip up some baseband-only Odin images for testing?

Anyways, there are devices on ICS that do not have such issue. May this be connected only with the tegra2 platform? Even have no idea how is this issue called to search.. sleep of death? As i know, its the state, when device does not wake at all, even after pressing power. Not our case.

"Sleep of death" already has an established meaning. It means there's an intermittent whole-system freeze that only happens when the device is in standby, giving a "dead" appearance. It's been the bane of Kindle Fire developers for some time now.
I'd call this "no radio wake" personally.

Nice term, tottaly agree.
I just can say, that I have tested the lite rom, based on 4.0.4, that has a baseband chooser in aroma installer. I've tried running it with a baseband from 2.3.6 stock rom (that was my only hope), that did not give any difference, radio still did freeze Anyway, I cant be sure I did everything right that time, and your way of solving this must be tested.
Also, my thoughts are about some ATT frequency specific things, as I cant say everybody here is complaining (most are from North America, right?). May this be caused by using glide outside of US and Canada?

That's quite possible, as I'm on AT&T towers even though I don't have service through them (I'm with a prepaid MVNO) and I'm not having problems.
