[Q] Root on Mac? - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

I have a new droid Incredible 2 on 2.3.4 and with S-on. I also have a mac. Is there any way to root my phone?

I'm not sure if there is a mac specific option, but you could probably boot your mac using an Ubuntu live cd, and root from there.

There IS a viable 2.3.4 root now?

Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A

Just downgrade the bootloader to .97 then use the revolutionary tools. Either use a live cd linux or install virtualbox and install linux in there.

can you give step by step instructions on how to do that? i am pretty technical but i am new to android or can put a link that shows my how to do this?

Here it is.

Just use ROM Manager It will install recovery without adb or a computer. Just do it through an Android app.
But if you want to use AmonRA, you can follow any of the above links. You'll need the Android adb tool and drivers I believe (if you are running on Windows or Linux). On Mac, all you need is adb.

So basically... I have a unrooted, unhacked etc. Desire.. I want to test some of the new 2.2 roms..
Can I, without my phone being rooted, use "rom manager" from the market and flash a custom recovery, from where I can flash roms, radios etc.? Or do I have to something before I can utilize the power of "rom manager"?.... What about the new "fake-flash" released a couple of days ago?
Excuse me, but i'm coming from an HTC Hero where the only thing you did, was using flashrec...
I'm a little confused with all the guides around here.. Some say you have to use a PC/mac (I have a mac) to "root" the desire... Others say that there is a simpler way... I'm looking for the safest and simplest ... I like when procedures are convenient

To root it you'll need a pc/mac running linux, windows or whatever macs run. Afterwards there are workarounds that makes flashing ROMs relatively simple, without having to initiate recovery form a computer first. So step one: follow the root guide in the stickied thread.
Mac

[Q] For most of you an extremely simple question.

I have updated my Desire with all official updates of HTC to date. I heard that if you do that with a Wildfire (that I also own and have done the same with) you loose the ability to root it. Is that also the case with a Desire?
Quick answer, no
Thanks. I'll root it this weekend with that with that Ubuntu Live CD method. Any tips before I start?
Just to make sure you understand everything about what you're doing before you do it.

Don't have to use a LiveCD - just get unrEVOked for Windows and use that
Well I know I have to root. (using that live-cd or unrevoked)
S-Off is not needed. (from what I have figured out.)
I follow the idiot guide of the starburst rom here. >>> starburstrom.wordpress.com/category/installation
I have a sim-locked phone but I'm not replacing the sim anyway.
Missed something?
So long as you have a custom recovery at the end of it you're good to go!

A custom recovery?
And do I need to leave the SIM in or out of the phone?
custom recovery will be installed by unrevoked. just follow onscreen instructions with unrevoked.

+1 for windows you still have to download and install the fastboot drivers.

All of the oneclick methods have a high brick rate; the safest way to root is via adb as listed in the wiki. Its quite simple (I was drunk when I rooted mine), just follow the directions and double check your typing

Follow the wiki guide. Follow exactly the guide. Should be no problem.

The wiki is the best way.
Use the Wiki as it is the XDA approved method. Now you will need to down grade so you need to follow the wiki in the exact order that it is. If you cannot follow the instructions, then you probably should not be rooting your phone in the first place.
You may want to take it to a fried that you trust to do the work and show/explain to you what they are doing and why. What are your goals for a rooted phone.
I've rooted my Vision twice with ADB and it gets easier once you get the hang of it.

Well it's very common that people get intimidated at the mention of ADB when they start out to root their phone... You could follow rooting instructions on my blog www.desirez.strawmetal.com you could try out the HTC Super Tool or use the regular guide there.. hope i could help you
My response to another guy (with basically the same question) just earlier today pretty much covers my thoughts on the matter: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21280578&postcount=18
Wiki guide or strawmetals (or the guide in CM Wiki, for that matter) are essentially the same, I believe. But it looks like strawmetal was kind enough to package all the needed files into one download package, and simplify the steps a bit.

The downgrade is the hard part, and that requires adb.
Once past that, you could use the visionary/gfree method (not the visionary perm root method). It's pretty safe from what I've heard. I know some will disagree, but I've done it 3 times successfully with gfree.
i try to set up adb but my computer is dumb!!
it never reads my phone i tryed like three diffrent adb still nothing
If you haven't already, check out the adb guide in my signature to see if that helps.

where has fastboot gone?

hi guys!
I'm completely new to the forum but I didn't find the introduction section like in other forums, so sorry if I first didn't present myself there!
I just got a galaxy nexus and I'm using a mac.
I was able to unlock it and now I would like to root it in order to install the Android Revolution HD ROM and all over the web the developer team says to root the phone using fastboot. The problem is that all the links redirect to the modaco page with the first actual link and this takes you to a filesonic page which is down for the moment...
I guess this is caused by the recent sopa and pipa...
What am I supposed to do? is there any other way to download it?
every rooting guide I found talks of using fastboot...
thanks!
Do you have the android sdk installed?

Pretty sure those links have been down for a while.. check the dev section for other ways to root.

But since the developers say that you ned a gnex rooted with fast boot I thought I had to use that method in order to use their rom. So I can use any Method I want to root it?
If you've unlocked the bootloader then you have already used fastboot so just use the fastboot commands to flash CWM and then use that to flash the root package. Get the latest Superuser package from here:

Fastboot is not a program you should download. It is the menu that appears wat your GN when you start up your phone with Volume up + Volume Down + Power button. You should however download the appropriate files for unlocking and rooting etc. See other threads on what those files are...
If you installed the android sdk then it should be in the platform tools folder.
