how do i get ice cream - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello how do i download ice cream, will i get it from the marketplace?

If it supports your phone, it will be an over the air update when its released sometime next month.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk

You can buy at a stand
But Desire won't get any updates, only custom ROM (hopefully).

You probably own an HTC Desire since you posted this question here... then you'll have to wait just like the rest of us for our awesome developers to port the ROM over.
We are not gonna get any over the air update since HTC ended their support for our device already.

In addition htc devices get old soon because of the htc sense.. It's always hard for htc port sense ui over a new os like ics

Well, 20 Months old.
Where does it say they are obliged to update your phone's software forever? If you think about it, not many non-android phones have support for software above and beyond this.

Well it released Feb last year, but I agree that HTC really messed up with the Gingerbread update, Desire owners deserved that one done properly.
As for ICS, can't really expect HTC to support the Desire that far... it'd be the third major update.

Because it wasn't released as a normal, OTA update. Instead, HTC released a very late, buggy version via their website, and so your average desire owner probably doesn't even know a GB update exists.

That's because with OTA they couldn't delete content from system. And it ain't more buggy than FroYo, in fact it's less buggy than FroYo.

Sure, it's less buggy than froyo, but you would expect that, really. Some of the bugs that I really thought would be addressed were still present.
And you can't deny that when a manufacturer releases an update that has warnings and disclaimers on it, it hasn't been done quite as smoothly as Samsung/Apple.

Because of memory constraints (duh!).

No chance of ics on HTC desire unless ported thru custom Rom

If HTC will remove gapps, then it will be easily possible, even if with old Sense.

Rooted and get an custom ROM will give you ice cream earlier. Forget HTC.

Doubt very much if we will see ICS on Desire...
ICS is optimised for dual-core and also features virtual keys. There is already speculation on the Sensation boards whether they will see the update, due that device using soft keys.
I imagine HTC will tweak ICS to run on Sensation, but can't see them adapting to Desire. Too many deficiencies to be addressed.
Hoping our awesome devs will be able to at least port various bits and pieces from Android 4.0 for us to enjoy, though!!

Well we will probably, just that we won't see it from HTC as they dropped support for Desire.
Because ICS will essentially work with any phones that can run Gingerbread (not just dual-core). And apparently ICS checks if your device have hardware keys or not, if there is, they will not display the virtual keys. And i can't really see Google being so stupid to only restrict ICS to phones without hardware keys as there are essentially no other phones besides the galaxy nexus that do not have hardware keys.
Also, we already have a port of ICS SDK, here. Its not usable or perfect, but at least it proves that the Desire can run ICS.

grack warns Google and Sprint about EVO security hole

Grack is reporting that holes in Sense have made it ridiculously easy for any app to escalate itself to root. He notes in the post that "both Google and Sprint have been very proactive in plugging this hole." He also notes that, while he will be releasing his rooter tomorrow, he won't be explaining it for a week. This makes me wonder if there's an OTA in the works that will close at least his vulnerability in the meantime.

wow, this sounds like a serious security flaw. i'd prefer not to see a worm or malicious 3rd party app gaining root access through poorly coded HTC sense apps.
dont think it will remove NAND protection of /system in normal android mode.
it will provide an alternate way to achieving root access in normal android mode besides loading Flipz ROM.
wonder if removing all sense related software will remove this exploit?
guess we'll be able to start testing tomorrow...

That's a good point, I guess AOSP 2.1 doesn't have this problem since he says its due to Sprint's additions.
Has HTC / Sprint ever been fast at rolling out an update?
I wouldn't worry, maybe an OTA months down the road, but I wouldn't count on anything within weeks...
The last Sprint phone I had was a RAZR, so I'm a bad source as to their history of timeliness; however, I wouldn't be surprised if they had a different strategy for pushing out a critical security patch than they would for a new system build.
They don't have to rewrite thousands of files against a new trunk build, bounce it between vendors, run extensive Android compatibility suites, etc. It's quite possible they have a few relatively simple changes to make to close grack's hole.
i bet they will patch it when they patch the tethering so that you have to pay for it. some time in july
there will be an update tomorrow. dont know the change log.......
so is it better to root or not to?

Usually I hate resurrected threads, but this one deserves a second look.
At this point should we continue to wait for 2.3 root, or build a time machine to prevent the update from being rolled out?
Actually, yeah, this is definitely something worth looking at.
If the exploit still exists, it might be able to get root for people on the OG Evo 2.3.

6 Days To supposedly release

It wouldn't surprise me.. Software development is never a definitive process. It's impossible to determine how long something will take. Sometimes it takes quicker than expected, sometimes longer.
as i said elsewhere, if they cancel release and work on it further before releasing it's a good thing for us.
if they release the current version they will prolly stop working on fixing the important stuff
if they dont and delay further it means they have realized the "important stuff" REQUIRES fixing before release
in a nutshell:
- RFS performance (replacement would be neat but they are too proud of their own FS or smth.. weird)
- GPS accuracy ( /pray ?)
- Reported critical software bugs (exchange, etc)
Luckily they read XDA
Just a question - how is this question for development section?

Jerahmeel Zacky Chua So Galaxy S was first released in SG... Are we the first to get Froyo too?
Wednesday at 5:09pm · Flag
2 people like this.
Samsung Mobile Singapore Hi Jerahmeel, unfortunately not. Europe will be getting it first. SG should still be getting at end of Sep.
Samsung UK mobile on twitter are still giving out the "end of September " answer on Twitter so...... who knows. I'd say samsung but I'm starting to doubt that!
We'll just have to wait and see right?
I prefer they another week or 2 to really finalize it and fix all the bugs before releasing instead of rushing for a release which only disappoints.
cheers man, I am personally not offended but some people might be a bit more PC
ontopic: i wouldn't mind upgrading to froyo knowing it had bugs, but at the same time knowing it would get updated within a reasonable time frame. the problem we have with samsung (apart from having to put up with their developing "skills") is that they are very quiet. you only find out about stuff per semi-dodgy twitter or facebook accounts.
very likely samsung is rushing froyo to pre-empt the Desire HD which ships with froyo. (and early previews seems to indicate a very mature froyo at that) and latest reports says the Desire HD may even ship a week earlier...so our buddy Mr Sam Sung is in a bit of a bind here....lol.
rushed the 2.1 to pre-empt the iphone4 and now trying to rush 2.2 to pre-empt the HD....tough being mr sam.
And then they'll rush their new gingerbread phone to market and forget all about their galaxy s customers..... :/

Well if they forget about their Galaxy S customers with regard to Gingerbread, they wont be doing themselves any favours with a phone that's been on the market a less than a year.
I know new Android phones are constantly being released but Samsung will not announce a new phone as soon as Gingerbread is released.
The Galaxy S will still be a flagship product and companies will need to take a leaf out of Nokia's book.
Look how many people stuck with the likes of Nokia for many years.
Companies like Samsung producing Android phones need to start getting their act together with the OS, otherwise it'll end up as a one horse race and the likes of HTC will end up with the largest slice of the market.
I don't expect to see any proper froyo for SSGS in the near future.
However Samsung should at least release the official GPS fix within this September since this problem is already a know issue for a long time and they can have separate development between this and the froyo one.
the galaxy s line is selling very well, so i'd guess that they can not afford to let us standing in the rain when comparable htc/motorola devices get gingerbread. as to the froyo update: i hope they take their time to improve speed and fix the remaining bugs. at least for us 'power-users' (flashers) it would be preferable that they release an official froyo firmware (INCLUDING the SOURCE -> voodoo fix) but improve it further over the next month or 2...

[Q] Sense not updated to 2.1 despite official 2.3.3 upgrade?

Hi folks,
I updated my Desire from 2.29 to 2.3.3 last night. Proceeded to S-OFF and root it using Revolutionary.
Question: The Sense hasn't changed to 2.1
The interface isn't different - I was assuming 2.1 would be something like, for eg, what was portrayed in the GingerBurst ROM xda page.

In figure 2, note the icons at the bottom. However, for me, they still are how they were before: A triangle (to show the all apps menu) on the left and the plus (to add something to the screen) on the right.
In figure 3, there are apparently different sections in the all apps menu. This isn't the case with mine.
Can someone please clarify what the 'issue' is?

not only that, DHD has a TFT-LCD screen and not an SLCD screen. HTC scammed in their specifications. I didn't realise it until my cousin got a DHD and i was wondering how come the colour is unlike what i see in Desire S and Sensation.

lol... You know what? I was stupidly waiting for the official Gingerbread update of HTC Desire. When arrived (after long long waiting) I downloaded and installed just hoping for a new interface (HTC Sense). Alas! There was nothing.
But, I am so happy for the incident. Cuz, this made me desperate to have newer version of Sense. I looked for it and discovered the way of rooting. Thats it! I rooted my device at the 9th day when HTC announced offcial GB update using Unrevoked. Then I installed custom ROM with sense 3.0 and I am enjoying. I learned a lot within these days. Currently I am using Sense 3.5
So, i suggest you to do same.

On the contrary, they updated as much as they could. You know, all those fancy animations require additional space, which Desire lacks it. Even after deleting 3 apps and all wallpapers there is approximately 20 MB less of free space. Of course, they could upgrade Sense to full 2.1, but we would have what, 5 MB of free space? Not much usable, is it?

Since it's a stock android device (the whole point of the nexus series), it will not have sense. The only way I could think of is if someone specifically made a sense ROM for it.

Naw, somebody may make one once HTC puts out their version of Sense over ICS I would guess.
I sense that sense wont be available on a non sense device like the sgn and that it is non sense to get a sense that it will.

I'm sure there will be at least one DEV who will cook up a sense rom for the Nexus. I'm excited for this phone because of all the DEV's, not so much that it's stock, but that's a plus.
Buy an HTC edge in Q1/Q2. Specs wise it'll spank the Galaxy Nexus, except that it'll be burdened down with the Sense overlay.

rumor has that it's not going to be a Verizon phone. Also it's very likely the Q1 Q2 date will be pushed back, not to mention that is still a very long wait, and battery life could be atrocious.
I was wondering when this would be asked, but I expected it sooner.
Is there any non-HTC device forum where this question has not been asked (jet)? One of there first questions in new HTC device forums is "will it be possible te remove sense"?
I wouldn't expect Sense for the Nexus Prime any time soon (actualy, I wouldn't use it all if I were you). It has already heen said, but the Nexus line is all about the nice and clean Google experience.

Will it ever even be possible to have a working 4.0+ for the EVO 4G?

Dozens of people all working on ICS and JB roms but not a single one of them are fully working.
Without HTC's help in releasing the drivers for the FFC and camcorder will there ever even be a working rom or are all of them just going to miss out on features of the phone forever? 4G not working is fine since 4G EVO version is not going anywhere, but missing out on the camcorder and FFC are big deals..
Seems like this topic comes up at least once a week now, in some way or another.
To answer your question though, no. Without the source for the drivers, developers would have to come up with it from scratch, which is very meticulous and time-consuming as I understand it. Sure, the possibility exists, but I believe the chance of it happening is slim to none. Not that I think the developers couldn't do it, but we're talking about a device that's 2+ years old now. There are newer and greater devices out there that are still being supported, not only by great developers but also the manufacturer, which is key to this entire issue. When the OG lost the support of HTC and went EOL with Sprint, it was pretty much game over as far as source code ever went. If you want a fully-functional ROM, stick with GB-that's where the OG shines

As you can see the development for the OG is just about dead, theres no real reason for anyone to attempt to make a driver for it,the phone is close to being obsolete,so it would be useless.

I completely agree, as long as they feel that they could loose profit by having potential customers sticking with their old phone, they wont release a thing. But when ICS is old news, then don't be to shocked if they just happen to go ahead, and out if pitty, throw it our way.

They can't release something they don't have. Do you really think they would write drivers for a device they no longer support? That's a waste of time and resources better spent working on currently supported devices.

It be a great show of solidarity among OG Evo 4g users and a big middle finger to Sprint and HTC. Also, really kick ass. At any rate, maybe instead of *****in we should be learnin.

It's true, but I believe it's because there are a lot more newer devices that are being supported. This is an old phone and i'm surprised it's still being developed. For me, I'm using this JB Rom and loving it so far: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1947452.
I do believe there will never be a fully functioning JB ROM cause the camera drivers don't match up. Not to mention the EVO hit its max software with GB. Anything past that starts to lag. Having that issue now with JB on my Nexus S.
