[Q] Has the IBONE made your phone work any differently? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So, no one knows how many IBones were sold by sprint in the last few days, but, has anyone noticed any effects on their network/data speeds or quality?
I dont notice anything different, but, a lot of folks were wondering if the crush of these things would make Sprints network any shakier than it already is..

Nope. My 3G speeds have actually improved the past couple of days. *shrug*

[Q] Really slow data speed

I have been dealing with Sprint this past week about very slow data speed. I have been getting around 50-100 kbps down and 300 kbps up. When I went to a nearby town I was getting 800- 1300 kbps down and 400-500 kbps up. All of these are on 3G. Today when Sprint called me I was asked if " EV " was displayed instead of 3G. I was told there are 3 levels to 3G. I vaguely remember EV before I rooted and ROMed but I have not seen it since. Is indication of " EV " typically removed from a custom ROM? I have used Frozen 1.2 and am now using RandomRom 2.3.4. I tried all of the available modems with Frozen with no change before I installed EG22 and Flashed RandomRom. I have a few friends that also are complaining about slow data speeds in our area so I don't think its my phone anymore. Any thoughts or advice on the subject?? Thanks!

Sprint has horrible 3G speeds which is also why Im going to drop them soon.
After Sprint did not renew its tower leasing agreements and lost its Alltel tower network, its % nationwide coverage area dropped precipitously. Even with SERO, I am now questioning whether it's worth staying with Sprint given the decline in service over the past few years.

You're most likely on 1x. The Epic doesn't have 1x or EV signal icons by default. Try this app and it will tell you everything about your connection.
before the evo came out, sprint was worty of its name.
it had the fastest 3g in the country. 3-5mbps on my hero in nyc
then evo came out and who needs 4g when your 3g is more than enough?
Everyone saying they dropping sprint soon. Sprint will phase in their new type of signal next year, they will discuss it on the 7th of next month. I think they may have started on some towers. My 3G has greatly dropped but my 4G is almost as fast (if not as fast) as my DSL internet. I am happy with it and being with Sprint 6 years and compared to what others complain about from their service I'll stick with sprint for 6 more. Unless they raise prices.

Well, hopefully it changes things for the better, but I still don't see how it makes up for the lack of towers. And what's good is 4g if I can't get it in 50% of locations? Giving it until the end of the year.
I guess im lucky. I get ok 3g (0.9mbs) and great 4g ( 5-7 mbs). But driving around my city, it cones and goes once I hit a few city hills.

Me and my g/f both have Epics. Mine is rooted and running a custom rom and hers is stock. Both of us were experiencing crappy data speeds until i updated both phones modems to EH17.
Speeds are much better in some places where we have good signal, from 300k to 1.5 - 2.2mbps. So it may have something to do with the modem you currently have as well.
Although i did talk to a sprint employee at the nearby store and I was told they were going through some tower upgrades in the DFW area. Tearing down old towers and putting up new. He suggested that it would be around 6 to 8 months time before things are completed.
I also have been in contact with sprint over the last 6 weeks or so about crap 3g. At times I see 12KB downloads with 6 out of 6 to 6 bars.
Sent from the Drivers Seat of my Suby txting and Driving doing 100MPH+ in a school zone! Ha.
I ran that clear nvram thing from the other thread. I suggest you try this. It fixed my GPS perfectly and my 3g speeds have increased dramatically. I ran a speedtest earlier and got 300-350kb/s. Before I did it my 3g was atrocious at less than 50kb/s.

Problem with all this is that CDMA "4G" eats a ton of battery compared to just as fast (or in Sprint's case, 20x faster) HSPA+ network. This is just my very personal observation between Epic and LG G2X. My super personal opinion is that CDMA should just burn in hell and die. Voice quality is better...

This. Anyone ever run their phone in airplane mode from a full charge to 0%? The battery lasts AGES. I had to run benchmarks repeatedly on performance mode for hours to kill it purposely. The ****ed up part is that I ALWAYS have NY 3g off and 4g on. The radio in this device is horrid for battery life.

I've also called sprint this week to ask/complain about data speeds. The best I've ever had is around 1100 kbps down, but lateley it's only been 100 to 300. So a couple of days ago I went to a verizon store and asked the girl to compare speeds with me. She was getting 1900kdps down and my epic NEVER even found the nearest server. I was blown away and very red faced when I left. I could get better data speeds with two soup cans and some string.

Sprint service quality, is this normal?

I live in NW Indiana (just outside of Chicago) and last night my service was so slow I could not even stream Spotify (with 3-bars on the 3g meter), when I tested with speedtest app I was getting +,- 100 kbps, is that what I can expect from my new carrier?
My phone is rooted with Blazer rom and shows baseband EG31 and Kernel EG30, is that ok or could I have messed up the modem? I tested at 4:40am this morning and got over 1 mbps....
I have noticed, I live in New York, a significant service downgrade in the past three months. My unfounded theory is that it has something to do with the Iphone launch, because service was great about 6 months ago. I had very few problems.
I've noticed the same thing here in Oak Park, CA (just a bit NW of LA), starting about a couple of months ago, on both my Photon and my Epic Touch. Sprint's 3G service has become terribly inconsistent and generally bad.
Its all over thats why im switching to verizon. The worst thing is the reps act like nothings wrong

Same here, data sucks balls big time but voice so far has had no issues.
Its the dat part that is killing it. Yet we have to pay that extra 10 bucks a month just because its a smart phone aka data usage. What a joke.
Or maybe that extra 10 bucks is to pay for data usage for Carrier IQ... LOL
It's not really because of the iPhone, although that plays a small part in it. Sprint has just been lazy overall in maintaining and upgrading their network while the majority of customers have switched to smart phones
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Honestly, I think its just work being done on the network. I noticed the same thing, but 3 days ago I did a prl n profile update (I had done this several times before) n started getting much better service, including 4g. I'm not saying g this is the case for everyone. If you do jump ship, have fun with Verizon. I dealt with them for years before sprint. And if you think sprints customer service is bad. . . Also their data prices are INSANE! but, Verizon does have a better network. TO ME, being able to stream my music collection without worrying about data is more important than being able to watch a movie on 3g, but thats why we get choices if sprint was right for everyone, Verizon wouldn't be in business, and its the same the other way around
If I was helpful, give thanks

When I go within 100ft of the tower I use in my home in Toledo I get full signal strength and peek speeds of 100 kbps, sprint really needs to get on that. Then again in Cleveland I get 1mbit+.
Sprints network is really unstable right now so its probably not the best time to sign a contract with them if you use a lot of data.

Just keeping checking the website that was posted before. We are making a lot of updates and changes to make the network better. I have seen better improvement myself and know more are coming. The next two years are going to have a better and faster network. Remember that the USA is huge so it does take time. The other thing to do is preach to everyone to use wifi whenever they can so that there are less phones on the network until the project is completed in 2013!

Yup lots of variables.
each site can handle only so many people. Older sites have overall capacity issues. Thats to say some sites can handle x amount of users, and x amount of data. Some sites get user upgrades to handle more users but not data, causing a super slow down.
Then theres the issue of interference. Add in any issues your device might be having due to flashing a custom rom, kernel or modem and it all adds up to way to many possibilities.
The good news is, you verified your modem is good, not only did you get slow data speeds one test, but later it was good.
I have a similar experience with my Stock Epic Touch.
Some locations in Dallas, TX have horrible data speeds, while others are hit and miss.
One of the worse i am aware of is the are of i635 / hwy 80. Ever weekend i meet my dad for lunch at a BBQ place in that area. I test every weekend and the speeds are SOO SLOW. But once i leave the area im back to 1meg or so..
Overall i am still happy. I am just patient i guess.
yap service absolutely sucks, that's why I have started using the ROAM method and hopefully within a couple of months sprint will let me leave at no cost.
I think the implementation of "Network Vision" is going to cause things to get worse before they get better in many areas.

I was up in Michigan City last month for 4 days (Mother in Law and Wife's Grandma live there) and was in and around Hammond and Valpo as well. I got much better speeds than that with my EG4T. The 3G in MC was actually superior to the 3G down here in DFW, although they don't seem to have 4G...

Agreed. These are my 3G speeds:
This is Sprint's so called "3G". There's really no point of unlimited data when Sprint's 3G is basically already throttled the whole time.
Even though I think their "3G" is so bad, I still don't switch to another carrier since Sprint has Unlimited data. I still don't switch despite the fact that those carriers (ATT, Verizon, T-Mo) have prepaid plans that are half the price Sprint. Oh, and did I mention those plans have data limits that are higher than the actual carrier plans?
But nah, I'm not gonna switch to prepaid even though it would be so logical.
(This post isn't serious. Instead, it's basically how I interpret people's posts complaining about Sprint's 3G. If you don't like it, switch carriers...)

100% Sprint. It's what I usually get around my home area. 1000-150kbps throughout the day, 1500-1900kbps at night.
The thing is, I live in a suburban area so the towers aren't used as much. I'm willing to bet that throughout the day there are only like 4 or 5 other people connected to data that actually use their data.
Here's my 3g speed, guess I'm lucky.

Sprint 3G finally improving?

So I have been horribly frustrated with sprints 3G speeds since I got my epic. I live in metro Detroit. (Fairly large sprint market) and have averaged around 50-75kbps DL. With a 600ms+ ping. And there is ZERO wimax anywhere. I was getting fed up. Until over the last month or so I have seen 600%+ increase in speeds. I now average closer to 500kbps DL with a 111ping. And I have even had consistent tests of 1mb DL. Could this be the first fruits of network vision? Or other tower upgrades? Or somehow less traffic. I had considered it could be the newer ROM/modem. (CM10/FH13). Has anyone else seen recent speed increases?

edit well i just did a speed test and im back to the usual 300kbs lol lucky i pay a dial up price and get dial up service XD so i guess not. sprints the most useless unlimited ever. Even living in a wimax area the wimax sucks everywhere but the beach. ( where i dont even need wimax)

+1, I have 1 year left on my contract. Next July I will re-evaluate sprint and see how things are going. If sprint stepped up to the plate then bonus I will stay but if its the same ol song and dance crap I am gone. Maybe this xmas I will do that re-evaluate of sprint and see what is up and just maybe I might buy off the rest of my contract, pay a etf and jump ship. But having to pay a extra 10 bucks a month just because of a smart phone crap aka 4g is bull**** considering sprint does not have wimax, 4g, lte or what ever here where I live and 3g is absolutly slower than dial up modem speeds.
Well Sprint Vision says that in the next 6 months a tower will basically be put in my backyard, according to their map. My contract is up in 12 months, I'll make a decision then.
I get 8kb/s out here in Toledo....

Mine has picked up in some areas the past few weeks but its still crap in other areas and at random times. Its also still much slower than 3G from any other carrier. My Sprint 3G speeds are often similar to Tmobile Edge speeds I had 4 years ago but Edge was more consistent.
Every week my 3G speed changes, today I am getting less than 100kbps when last week or so I was getting almost 600. I am hoping this is due to them upgrading the towers and that is causing the inconsistencies.
Are you using updated maps to see this info or are you just using the maps on Sprint's website?

That's what I'm saying. I'll stick it out for the prospect of unlimited 4g...

Just got 4g Lte in my neighborhood

I got home today from a 6 weeks job training and to my surprise 4g works and it hasn't been announced in my area yet. I live in Springfield Virginia. Pics below. Sprint LTE ftw

4g lte was turned on in my area, northeast Michigan even though there hasn't been an official release from Verizon.. It was a nice surprise

4g is worthless unless you're downloading stuff and not near WiFi.
It drains battery like crazy and has no effect on calls or texts.
I turn it off until I need it.

Nice opinion but it's not fact. 4G is great, it does not do anything for battery on my device because I always have 4 bars in the city I live in. I enjoy having it for fast browsing, fast loading of apps like facebook and currents etc.
I can't wait until there is nothing but 4G available, then let's see you say how "worthless" it is. Seriously.
uuuh Springfield, you know the Simpson family? xD

Actually, 4G is pretty normal in almost all major cities at this point which is where a much higher population of people reside statistically. This means more people get 4G than don't. If you live in the sticks then that may be an issue for you but it definitely does not mean 4G is worthless.
BTW, no need to be rude just because you don't live in an area that has good 4G reception.

I see no utility in 4g for a phone other than battery draining

Even in small cities.
I live in a small town of 3,000 and we have Verizon LTE.
No HUGE towns nearby either, nearest medium size town being 21 miles away.

I'm in Landover, MD and get LTE at my home.
I went to Temple hills,MD area and got 23MB down!
I think all sprint says is the DC-MD corridor is supposed to be completed by end of year
Tethering at LTE speed to my Nexus 10 is priceless!!!
I love having 4G LTE. Mine is not as fast as others who have posted in this thread, but it still beats the hell out of 3G. I don't notice it draining the battery any more than wifi, and with those speeds, it is better than wifi.

Same, that's why I love AOKP ROMs with the LTE toggle
My 2 cents...
Im in Nashville, TN and over here, on Verizon, I have LTE everywhere. In fact, I never see my phone drop to 3G.
Is it a battery drain? Yes it is. Which is why I also toggle LTE off when Im not using it.
Do I actually use it? Well, If I was on Sprint with "Unlimited LTE" or if I had unlimited with Verizon I would use LTE 24-7 if I had unlimited data. In fact, If I had unlimited data I would just remove my Comcast Wifi and use LTE for all my data at home LOL.
what about battery life?
I heard it eats like a horse...
No, it eats like a dinosaur on gnex.

You mean other then giving you voice and data at the same time?
Here in Houston, where we supposedly were part of the initial LTE rollout, 4G is still a hit or miss. 1 mile down the road from my old apartment, I could get 30 mbps down, 15 mbps up, but inside my apartment, I only had 1 to 2 bars of dead slow 3g.
Also, signals indoors are usually horrendous. I'm giving sprint until the end of my contract in a year to show me they can improve.

Got the same thing right around Christmas and i thought i was dreaming. Hey when you live in a rural area and have to use satellite for internet 4g is a welcome surprise.
Speeds aren't the best I've seen, approx 10mg down and up, but that's way nicer than the 3g i was used to.
I think in general battery life had improved. Typically i would try to toggle LTE off when home but half the time I'd forget so it'd drain a bit quicker searching.

LTE has been slowly creeping (literally) into Colchester, CT for a couple months now, it finally got to my house. I used to have 3G with maybe 0-1 bars, now it's 4G with the same, getting about 2.8 mbps, but it's actually usable now!
