4g is worthless unless you're downloading stuff and not near WiFi.
It drains battery like crazy and has no effect on calls or texts.
I turn it off until I need it.

Nice opinion but it's not fact. 4G is great, it does not do anything for battery on my device because I always have 4 bars in the city I live in. I enjoy having it for fast browsing, fast loading of apps like facebook and currents etc.
I can't wait until there is nothing but 4G available, then let's see you say how "worthless" it is. Seriously.

Actually, 4G is pretty normal in almost all major cities at this point which is where a much higher population of people reside statistically. This means more people get 4G than don't. If you live in the sticks then that may be an issue for you but it definitely does not mean 4G is worthless.
BTW, no need to be rude just because you don't live in an area that has good 4G reception.

Even in small cities.
I live in a small town of 3,000 and we have Verizon LTE.
No HUGE towns nearby either, nearest medium size town being 21 miles away.

I went to Temple hills,MD area and got 23MB down!
I think all sprint says is the DC-MD corridor is supposed to be completed by end of year
Tethering at LTE speed to my Nexus 10 is priceless!!!
I love having 4G LTE. Mine is not as fast as others who have posted in this thread, but it still beats the hell out of 3G. I don't notice it draining the battery any more than wifi, and with those speeds, it is better than wifi.

Same, that's why I love AOKP ROMs with the LTE toggle
My 2 cents...
Im in Nashville, TN and over here, on Verizon, I have LTE everywhere. In fact, I never see my phone drop to 3G.
Is it a battery drain? Yes it is. Which is why I also toggle LTE off when Im not using it.
Do I actually use it? Well, If I was on Sprint with "Unlimited LTE" or if I had unlimited with Verizon I would use LTE 24-7 if I had unlimited data. In fact, If I had unlimited data I would just remove my Comcast Wifi and use LTE for all my data at home LOL.
what about battery life?
I heard it eats like a horse...
No, it eats like a dinosaur on gnex.

You mean other then giving you voice and data at the same time?
Here in Houston, where we supposedly were part of the initial LTE rollout, 4G is still a hit or miss. 1 mile down the road from my old apartment, I could get 30 mbps down, 15 mbps up, but inside my apartment, I only had 1 to 2 bars of dead slow 3g.
Also, signals indoors are usually horrendous. I'm giving sprint until the end of my contract in a year to show me they can improve.

Got the same thing right around Christmas and i thought i was dreaming. Hey when you live in a rural area and have to use satellite for internet 4g is a welcome surprise.
Speeds aren't the best I've seen, approx 10mg down and up, but that's way nicer than the 3g i was used to.
I think in general battery life had improved. Typically i would try to toggle LTE off when home but half the time I'd forget so it'd drain a bit quicker searching.

LTE has been slowly creeping (literally) into Colchester, CT for a couple months now, it finally got to my house. I used to have 3G with maybe 0-1 bars, now it's 4G with the same, getting about 2.8 mbps, but it's actually usable now!

Sept 1st and my contract is up.
I love the epic, but time for a new phone. It got me thinking how much do I like sprint. Honestly I love the price. The internet has been awful. Phone calls have been dropping like flies for the last few months.
I saw this test about 3g/4g speeds
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2405607,00.asp
So I started to look, and it seems like T Mobile would be the same price as sprint. The others would not be much more.
Just wondering what you guys are thinking, and if anyone has had t mobile.
Now if only I could get the peoples rom on it I would be sold.
September first for me too.
Only difference, I'm being ripped off financially by Sprint.
So I'm definitely jumping ship.
As for me I'm looking at T-Mobile at $70 savings over Sprint, and Verizon at $30. Verizon has superior everything, T-Mobile has price. Hmmm.
Frankly it's all the same as far as T-Mobile and Sprint go. The coverage you're going to get with T-Mobile will vary depending on location, and will get better signal in some places as opposed to Sprint, and vice versa. I get full bars at my cousins cabin up north, while my uncle's T-Mobile phone can't get a signal whatsoever. A few miles further and it's flipped.
As far as data speed go you will see a defined performance boost. Sprint's data is the worst in the business, so the only way is up. HSPA+ gets the same, if not better speeds than full bars 4G on Sprint. I'll take throttling over consistent crap speeds any day.
My contract is up at the same time but I think the smartest thing for me to do would be to see how good lte is by december. I work in a sprint store but still not satisfied with the data like u guys. LTE should be covered as much as wiimax by the end of 2012 and should be covered double of wiimax coverage by next year. Still have hope lol. However I am extremely satisfied with my bill though. On a family plan with jp morgan discounts. Each of us pay exactly 50 a month and it covers the whole bill.
I'd say if your not going to be covered in LTE or have at least decent coverage, then jump ships. I should be pretty much covered here in Central Texas so... I'm not to worried about my .20mbps 3G connection for very much longer.

Cell strength bars and 4G speeds are unrelated. I have had no bars and no 3G and still connect to 4G with better speeds than that. 4G is a different band.
You think that is bad, try waiting 20 minutes for AT&T to connect to 4G hspa. They are so bad in Daytona I have to reboot the work devices 2 or 3 times to connect.

In your particular case it seems the tower your cell signal comes from IS also the 4G tower. I guess by me that is not the case and wherever my 4G comes from that tower has a stronger transmitter. I can avg 2-6 Mbs on 4G in Daytona.

IMO,this is very clear, given the endless hardware and compatibility issues you have run across
As to speeds...
I get 4-5mb speeds on 4G in both DC and Baltimore, though 4G is DC is much more spotty than in Baltimore.
My 3G speeds suck, but are close to the 1mb range typically.
I would be VERY hard pressed to leave Sprint.
Verizon is WAY to expensive, and has data caps
T-Mobile is cheaper, but has no batter coverage than Sprint, AND throttles data
AT&T? forget about it!
In reality, unless I am willing to shell out a bunch more $$, and live with data caps, I feel I would be hard pressed to do better than Sprint
I live in Salt Lake and Sprint has as good a service as Verizon.
AT&T is garbage. I moved down here for school from Alaska where they were the best hands down. Tmo is about the same. With roam control to get Verizon when I travel somewhere Sprint sucks there just isn't any reason to switch. My 4G speeds here are 4-5 mbps. 3G is about the same as AT&T.

Agreed. These are my 3G speeds:
This is Sprint's so called "3G". There's really no point of unlimited data when Sprint's 3G is basically already throttled the whole time.
Even though I think their "3G" is so bad, I still don't switch to another carrier since Sprint has Unlimited data. I still don't switch despite the fact that those carriers (ATT, Verizon, T-Mo) have prepaid plans that are half the price Sprint. Oh, and did I mention those plans have data limits that are higher than the actual carrier plans?
But nah, I'm not gonna switch to prepaid even though it would be so logical.
(This post isn't serious. Instead, it's basically how I interpret people's posts complaining about Sprint's 3G. If you don't like it, switch carriers...)

100% Sprint. It's what I usually get around my home area. 1000-150kbps throughout the day, 1500-1900kbps at night.
The thing is, I live in a suburban area so the towers aren't used as much. I'm willing to bet that throughout the day there are only like 4 or 5 other people connected to data that actually use their data.
Here's my 3g speed, guess I'm lucky.

My guess is you're on UMTS.
I'm sure it's all area driven. I'm considering switching to TMobile with this Note because the savings are incredible, but the coverage and speed compared to Verizon are absurd no matter where I go. Very disappointing.

Depends where you live. I live in metropolitan CA and WA, so... 25mbps over 4G for me
You get what you pay for. In any case, you can always go pre-paid or month to month, just no subsidies.

Just got my tmobile note 2. I have at least tested at 2 different locations where I see full 4 bars of 4g signal and my download speed is less than 500k!
Anyone saw similar issue?

I have been in similar situations before. I get 4g full bar but less than 300kpbs near a local shopping plaza. Less than 1/8 mile away I get 12mbps speeds. Go figure. I was testing out on both my Galaxy S2 and Galaxy S3 same time so it is definitely not a phone problem.
I hate to say it, but this phone's speeds just aren't acceptable to me after using LTE. Sounds like a whiny sort of complaint, but spending this much on a superphone..I did about a billion speedtests around eastern MI and it was rare to catch a good 4G signal like they demoed in the store. They also seem to have issues with their signal penetrating buildings. I love the phone, and would love to get away from Verizon and maybe use the new Nexus device too but they aren't there yet for me.

I'm in a "4G" area but I almost always see UMTS:3 there. I get 3-5 Mbps. Sometimes I see hspda:15, and I have seen 17Mbps.
My guess is you're on UMTS.

I have a fine "4G" signal in Western Michigan but I never get over 6mbps down and 2mbps up with pretty terrible pings.... Decent coverage though...

I'd think here it would be at least as stable. But even at best I got 7 down. For comparison in a old wood frame house downstairs I'd get 22 on Verizon where the Note pulls 2g. Maddening as the more I see what they do with their phones the less I want to stay with them.

I hear ya! I get 50mbps down and 15-20mbps up on my Verizon S3 in a brick building.... I live right by the tower though... I have no problem with 5mbps down as long as it is consistent but it usually is not...

A soft reset fixed my similar problem. With the phone on, take battery out and sim and then replace sim and battery back into phone. Worked for me..!

Last night was averaging 29mbps and highest was 31.59mbps in the burbs of Chicago. Yet when I am in Downtown Chicago which supposedly has 42mbps, I only get 5-8mbps.
I travel all over the east coast for work, and know T-Mobiles network inside and out. I travel to small cities as much as big cities, so being able to connect to a network is important. If I were new to T-Mobile, and the Note 2 was my first phone, I'd think T-mobiles network sucked. I have 2 lines, a Sensation I use to mainly to tether with (10gb plan), and my main line the Galaxy Note 2 (unlimited 4g plan). I keep getting a message saying, "not connected to network" in areas where I should definitely be on the edge network, or roaming. The Sensation will be connected on a network when the Note will give the not connected message. My overall speeds in 4g areas are better with the Note than the Sensation, but not in secluded areas.
When the Sensation first came out, it wasn't connecting to T-Mobiles network correctly, then they sent out an update that fixed the problems. My first couple of weeks with the Sensation were hell because of that. Now I'm dealing with it again with the Note 2. I'm hoping that they fixed the data issues in the first ota update, which I hope happens soon.
Here are some speeds I've gotten in the past few days...
Dothan Al - 2.03 mbps
Jacksonville FL suburbs - 17.69
Harrisburg PA - 5.45
Chattanooga TN - 2.31
us231 on FL/AL border - .88
Atlanta 14.81
Jacksonville and Charlotte has better speeds than Philly. I've yet to find a place with over 20mbps

sounds like ur on a $50 dollar or cheaper prepaid plan. those only come with edge support (even tho it will say 4g). upgrade to a 60 or 70
Las Vegas/Henderson NV area has great speeds. My highest was over 28Mbps and average is between 18-20.

Yeah i live in fort meyer and my coverage is pretty damn good...
My area is rated good to excellent according to T-Mobile, but that obviously is subjective. The step back from LTE just isn't doable for me on a premium device. I'm glad I learned that while i had time to back out. I understand better what a huge sacrifice of tech it is on the Nexus phone now. But I envy those it doesn't impact obviously.
It could always be worse op. I'm currently with sprint but will be switching to tmo in a little while so I've been lurking the forums. I have the nexus, a 4g lte phone and I pay for unlimited data, yet I only average 200kbps on 3g, and Saint Louis will be lucky to see sprint lte by the end of 2013.

I am currently using the S III on Verizon and I am looking to switch to T-Mo soon to save money, as I would save about $60/month. I am wondering if anyone is in the Boston area (I'm in the suburbs) that can comment on the kind of reception they get. Sorry if this isn't the right place for this. I figured it was as good as any.
What town do you live in? I get great service in the Boston Area around 5-7 mbps at home and inside the city I get around 10-20 mbps.

If I was you I would wait around until Tmobile's LTE launches and see what kind of reception people have with that and then get the GS4.
I can't switch till August. It worries me, as I have seen people with T-Mobile s3's at my HS holding them up to windows to get signal and my VZW s3 has like 4 bars of LTE. :/

Its not bad everywhere (I'm in Springfield) it can be spotty at times but otherwise unless I'm under some bridge or on the basement of a building..things work just fine.

Whole new england area is pretty good.. Gets choppy sometimes in SOME thickly settled areas. But not all Boston and surrounding Boston area is awesome. Hell I live in ri and I get 7-14 mb.

their map is pretty accurate...I live in Auburn, near the "edge" of Edge and 4G. In home a bit spotty on Cellular, but TMobile has the wifi calling and that is great when you are near wifi.
But most places closer in are fully covered in 4G, and really LTE vs HSPA...who cares!...Both are plenty fast for most things...
