So phone comes with Facebook for Android, and takes some space (6,45 mb) in the phone app, it's not movable, and linking doesnt change anything.
It looks like it can be uninstalled, so is there any fancier app that can do what Facebook for Android does or is it the only option?
Is it a good practice just remove it and use some 3rd party program that uses less space on phone?
If u want to link contacts you should use fb for HTC, adding a new sync profile for it under settings- account&sync.
Anyway, how did you manage to remove fb for android?

Try friendcaster perhaps.
Fairly full-features (including contact linking, notifications etc...)
Can be moved to SD or linked to ext (if you app2sd or link2sd set-up)

-Internal memory : jeez i installer 2 dozen applications and i got 13m left and the alert about low memory (which cant be deleted)
seriously??? 13mb left???? how can it be possible ! when i check the application list, i have like 40-60mb (made a quick calcul) installed ! i cant even isntall google earth ! and what the hell is "contact list" app? its almost 30mo!!
-Wifi tethering : any way without root? for tether with ipad
-Push mail through the HTC app...possible?
-How can i change the defaut app to open for X action...
-Can i use another SMS software with the HTC message widget? exemple when i click new message it open the defaut one...
-How can i use picasa ? i keep having an error (authentification...) in gallery app.
-voicesearch and speech to text. Installed HTC IME KB, Voice app and nothing work. I cant have the keyboard in the list of KB. And voice search doesnt work...(error connex)
thanks a lot
You want WinMo
oh no i dont
For all those questions, yes you do as it does them...the Desire doesn't as yet.
- It has Push for Googlemail, I think there is another app you can use for other account types
- Can't change default apps
- Can't use other SMS software (I don't think, could be wrong)
- Can't tether without rooting (as you've said)
HD2 does all these, some stock some with custom ROMs

- what about the support for Exchange push in the mail program?
-if you install another program, you may be able to. you can remove the defaults for applications in the settings. that's why you can switch between homescreens once you have installed launcher2.apk....
- there's plenty of other SMS software in the market, ChompSMS, Handcent etc.
- yes, you need to root.
But overall, yeah, it sounds like for the kinda stuff you want to do, winmo would be better all round.

Honestly you don't need google Earth it's 22mb and the maps does the same thing!
Also big drain on battery (Earth and Maps) so not something you would want to use all the time anyhow.
Search around for apps as you may find one that does same but for less space.
Also, are you using all the apps? Are a lot of them just games?
Be smart with the limited space.
It's not ideal I know, but until anything changes not a lot you can do.
-Internal memory
Yes, this is a pain. I wish Google would let us put stuff on SD card already without having to root the phone and HTC needs to put less preinstalled crap too replacing it with OTA on demand instead. Teeter? WTH!
-Wifi tethering
Yes, PDANet and some other application allow BT/WiFi/USD tethering with Windows/OSX and Linux. Probably not with iPad because it has no USB, BT is crap (if same as on iPhone) ... not real OS X.
-Push mail through the HTC app...possible?
No. Google's own email app will do push for Gmail accounts only. HTC email will check at specified intervals.
-How can i change the defaut app to open for X action...
You can't, as far as I know.
-Can i use another SMS software with the HTC message widget? exemple when i click new message it open the defaut one...
Yes. There are two very popular ones, but HTC's own is all I need.
-How can i use picasa ? i keep having an error (authentification...) in gallery app.
Yes. Not sure about your error. You can get Gallery app from N1 and use that instead of HTC's Photos.
-voicesearch and speech to text. Installed HTC IME KB, Voice app and nothing work. I cant have the keyboard in the list of KB. And voice search doesnt work...(error connex)
Hmm, by default HTC IME doesn't do voice. I installed Voice Search with Android default keyboard and have that feature now. Although I rarely use it. Swype FTW! Check the forums there was a link to the apk to get it all working.
thanks a lot...for the answer even though some are really mindblowing in the worst way
thx !
yup yup
You've summed up some of the biggest problems with Android and the Desire.
The inability to install apps to an SD card is a big problem - one that can be solved by waiting for root, or by waiting for the next release of Android (I think Google have said they are working on this feature for the next version). Basically, just by waiting.
I use IMAP IDLE with the K-9 email app for push IMAP email from my fastmail.fm account. Works instantly and perfectly. Love it.
Hope this helps a little.

My Applications/Manage Applications FCs on me all the time (it is probably some app installed from apk that causes this problem). Don't see said app show up in APK or ASTRO.
i dont get what u mean
Does anyone know what this is? I had 25mb of internal storage free and then suddenly this popped up in the applications list, takes up 15mb and now the "low storage" notification keeps showing up.
It's com.htc.socialnetwork.provider and that space is taken up by Facebook related data.

The Facebook app is already taking up almost 10mb and Contacts Storage is taking up 20. Are Facebooks contacts counted in Contacts Storage or somewhere else? I don't remember seeing the com.htc.socialnetwork.provider taking up this much space.

facebook contacts are stored in contacts storage, and com.htc.socialnetwork.provider.apk has always been there, its nessesary to run the integrated social network elements in htc sence, its stores your usernames, passwords and other related data, i used to periodically clear the data for all the things like that to reclaim some space (that was before i changed the mtd partitions on my device) lol

Oh ok. I have about 650 Facebook friends, and I don't use Twitter. I think it wastes a lot of space on my phone downloading all the friends, it would be nice if you could set it to just download the friends you've linked and ignore the rest.
So if I don't use Fakebook or Twitter, is it safe to remove com.htc.socialnetwork.provider completely (e.g. freezing it with Titanium Backup)?

If you don't use Facebook, I'd assume it wouldn't take up much space on your phone anyway, right?
It's really starting to annoy me how just my contacts seem to take up almost all the space on the phone and there's no room to download any new apps. Now I know why people like iPhones.

Yes. I have them all removed including their widgets. The ROM functions as normal.

I went to Settings > Accounts and Sync, and I unchecked the options to sync my Facebook contacts and feeds. But all of the contacts that it's already downloaded are still on the phone, how do I clear them? Also, will I be able to sync individual contacts if I want to, or is it all or nothing?
Thank you, th3 - that's exactly what I wanted to read I already froze all the other stuff, I just wasn't sure about this one.
Morning all...
So then, I'm still playing with my phones setup having had it for a month....
My main gripe is the lack of internal memory but thats another issue!
So then, I use Windows Live for all my personal stuff (contacts, calendar, and email) and want it to remain that way. I have tried using the official hotmail app however when I used that it used too much internal memory and the phone as a whole suffered.... So I would rather use the integrated android email solution. This works fine for everything when set up as an activesync account bar one thing. When you delete an email it will reappear on the next sync.
I currently get around this buy moving messages I want deleted to the trash box manually (Menu -> move -> Trash). Has anyone found a solution/fix to get the delete button working when syncing with hotmail!?!?
I'm used to Windows Mobile 6.5 so my thinking is that it shouldn't be too hard an issue to resolve... but I have no experience with Android yet! Any suggestions welcome!
Thanks all
Use standard mail app. See the thread of miui it includes link from me. Works great, Hotmail with puch and contact and calendar sync.

Should have mentioned... I am S-ON with the original o2 ROM....
So despite this....
If I download and use that mail.apk
it will overwrite the mail.apk installed on the device and resolve the deleting problem!
yes?
No it's just another app. I'm s-on too. Only allow to install non market apps

ok... but the app allows full integration with the htc sense functions?
Does it have a widget to display emails etc?
Does Contact linking work like normal ?
sorry for all the qs!
Works all but no sense widget. It's mail app from cm7

Morning all!
if I go into accounts & sync, add account, Facebook
nothing happens, it goes back to the list which has Google & Twitter in it. I have Facebook installed
any ideas?
cheers
The Facebook App needs an update to use the API and sync the contacts i guess.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/22/google-disables-contact-sync-in-facebook-for-android-only-nexus
We believe it is very important that users are able to control their data. So in the over-the-air update for Nexus S, we have a small change to how Facebook contacts appear on the device. For Nexus S users who downloaded the Facebook app from Android Market, Facebook contacts will no longer appear to be integrated with the Android Contacts app. Since Facebook contacts cannot be exported from the device, the appearance of integration created a false sense of data portability. Facebook contact data will continue to appear within the Facebook app. Like all developers on Android, Facebook is free to use the Android contacts API to truly integrate contacts on the device, which would allow users to have more control over their data. We are removing the special-case handling of Facebook contacts on Nexus S and future lead devices. We continue to believe that reciprocity (the expectation that if information can be imported into a service it should be able to be exported) is an important step toward creating a world of true data liberation --and encourage other websites and app developers to allow users to export their contacts as well.

My bigger problem with the facebook app is that the menu button is not accessible in ICS. As a result, you can't change the defaults for how often the app refreshes (I like to disable auto refreshing).
I prefer using fb throught the Browser.... facebook app is the most battery draining app ever.

Hi all
I recently rooted my Wildfire and installed the wonderful link2sd. My Wildfire was on T-Mobile and I froze the following system apps - Does anyone know if I can safety uninstall them as freezing dosnt appear to have created any problems? I assume that uninstall will create more internal memory?
Facebook
Facebook for HTC Sense
FM Radio
Gmail
HTC Hub
HTC Likes
Mobile TV
Peep
Stocks
Talk
Tell HTC
Tetris Demo
Tips for home
Top Apps
Is there any others I can ditch too?
Thanks ppl
Basically if you have frozen an app and it has caused no problems for a few days/couple of re-boots, then it is safe to delete. The ones in your list should be safe to delete anyway.
As for any others you can delete, it's hard to tell without knowing what apps you have on your phone. Generally anything that doesn't seem to be connected with the way the phone runs should be OK to delete.

You can remove all apps mentioned here ecept Tell HTC (Im not so sure about it). But yeah their integration will be limited,
You should be able to delete all the HTC widgets and mail and gmail and just redownload and link them.
