Bing Maps got updated very recently. There are cosmetic changes but they seem to be a lot more detailed. I'm in London and I can now see stree names that weren't there before. Also Tube and Train stations are now showing up, which wasn't the case before.
Let's gather feedback from people everywhere to see how big of an update that was
So... Noticed anything?
Finally! My house was built in 2004 and until now both google and bing maps didn't have it. Now i see it on bing and not on google maps..Microsoft is improving everything a lot!!
Oh so they did update i a lot. Some people seem to think they're now using Navteq data.
http://wmpoweruser.com/have-bing-maps-finally-integrated-nokias-navteq-data/
Still useless where I live.
Some more map information in Israel
I live in Tel Aviv (Israel). Before the update, the amount of map data of Israel was negligible.
Now all the streets and main highways are in. However, the side streets inside the city do not appear, so I cannot yet use it for proper navigation.
It got much better. Here in Düsseldorf it really is now much more detailed. Even those small paths in parks are now visible. And the shapes of buildings are visible. Really incredible.
Just for an example: This is from the desktop version but it is the same as in the mobile app.

I've used Nokia maps daily for months before i go my WP7. They ARE using NAVTEQ data. and i like the colour scheme now.
Nice too hear, would be nice to get other testimonies so we can confirm that
In true Microsoft fashion, they didn't even make a fuss about it while it's a big deal. No wonder iPhones are selling out.

Maps are definitely better here in Melbourne Australia. Easier on the eyes and slightly more detailed. Also questionably faster in terms of loading time?

Definitely faster, I noticed that too.
Yep they're faster and much smoother. I really like that update.
The problem is not only the colors. The problems is the lack of information.
Gogle Maps gives 10 times more information. In my country Bing Map doesn't even display the names of the streets (because the font it uses is too large for the street (!)). It is totally unusable.
Bing Map is one of the mediocre things in WP7 that could make me swith to Android.

I am glad to read that you were waiting for me Peew91.
I posted a screenshot comparison of Bing Map/Google Maps results below.
And Bing is still so ****ty unfortunately.
BING (names of most streets are not displayed). Sorry, but this is UNUSABLE.
GOOGLE MAPS
Any rumors for bing offline navigation in the near future?
@arturobandini that's a massive difference indeed, you'll have to see how it goes with Ovi maps.
Sent from my Samsung Omnia 7 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
@arturobandini Try zooming in all the way until you see the aerial view. More street names start to appear. And local scout highlights nearby restaurants, etc. Nice way to explore stuff.
Well at least you guys have local scout. We don't have that in Singapore.
Yup, the Maps in WP7 Mango are the best. I just did a quick run of the maps app in my Androids and iPhone and WP7 fared the best. The iPhone maps app was the slowest and the WP7 one the fastest. The Android one was up there with Bing maps except for zooming control. There were times when the map would kind of spring back away from a zoom rather than staying at it. Bing maps didn't do that and was just as smooth and faster and more thorough at displaying street names and city names. The iPhone maps, which uses Google, was pretty poor. The zooming was hindered by a slowness to resolve the area and it was easier to lose general location.
Way to go, Microsoft!

The problem is the size of the font Bing Map is using.
As soon as the font will be larger than the street, then the name of the street will not be displayed. This is hardly believable.
I expected a company such as microsoft could deal quickly with such an issue.
Whats the Deal with Navteq?! Navteq is even worse than Bing here in Sweden.
If Navteq was supposed to be the solution for the bad Bing maps then this ****ing sucks.

While Apple's implementation does not even come close to something like webOS, it's at least something.
Of course, with apps like AppSwipe on Android or TaskFacade on WM, we've had this forever.
But who's the only one left who doesn't have it? I think this is just embarrassing for Microsoft.
And that along with WP7's not-so-revolutionary UI, that wastes lots of space and doesn't include notifications handling like Android or webOS...
...sorry, but I hope WP7 fails miserably. That's what Microsoft deserve.
And by the way, Apple copied an Android developer!

If I read Engadget correctly, that's not real multitasking. They provide seven (?) system services that applications can use, like Audio etc. Which is definitely better than no multitasking (and for many practical intents and purposes may be better than real multitasking), but still...
Still better than WP7, though.
And as I said, it doesn't come close to webOS or Android, or even WM.
Those are still better at multitasking.
Nevertheless, I think this is embarrassing.
EDIT: Not sure yet.

No doubt about it. In terms of overall device performance it may be better than Android or WM, actually, even though limiting for certain applications.
I think I like how Apple did it. Looks like a pretty good compromise to me.
It's not bad, actually. But Android hasn't failed on me so far, thus I still prefer the full multitasking.
OK, two more announcements that I find quite embarrassing for Microsoft:
Multiple Exchange accounts
A gaming network for iPhone gamers.
They just blew away two of the most important (and only?) advantages of WP7, PLUS they even do something that WP7 doesn't: limited multitasking.
I don't know, but... This is sad
Microsoft have had it all in their hands for ten years and now they can't come up with something even remotely competitive?
This is sad, IMO.
Actually I got a question. Does windows mobile allow multiple exchange accounts? I was surprised to see that in the Apple conference.
No, Windows Mobile does not.
Windows Phone 7 will allow it.
Yeah I just read this post. They are going all out to try to head off WP7 before it even comes out. Microsoft better get busy on getting all the drawbacks of WP7 in line.
I laughed when they announced Apple iBox Live. Maybe Microsoft should have kept that one under wraps.
This was a sweeping swipe at both Microsoft and Google.
Great! You may love or hat Apple, but this was great.
Anyway, it's still not competitive to Android. Still misses notification handling and widgets, which make Android nicer to use.
At least that makes me happy, cause my Nexus will definitely NOT be outdated in July.
I'll reserve my final judgment till they announce the new hardware specs. They still don't offer good codec support, itunes is still a crime against humanity, and I haven't seen a new way to handle notifications.
The iPhone 4.0 multitasking seems to be really similar to the implementation in WP7.

No, it's better. In WP7, developers can't use those background services (e.g. music).

Correct you are currently the only thing 3rd party apps can do right now is push notifications. No services running in the background period.
7 limited APIs. This is the direction I expect(ed) Windows Phone to take.
Windows has the push notifications, the instant-resume apps, and music APIs that let apps plug into Zune and play music in the background... but Apple has covered the few scenarios most requested on XDA i.e. location tracking, task completion, 3rd party music, and VOIP.
Microsoft HAS to get these done or Phone 7 will be an inferior OS. Now I know iPhone started weak, watched the game, and add features after a few years, and Windows is starting new. Microsoft doesn't have the time though.. here and now, iPhone will have both data detection and copy paste while MS is catching up.
Also, Apple will make a crapton of money off iAd. Good luck Microsoft, I sort of believe in you
It's what WP7 was meant to have but didn't get in time. Third party services won't run on the iPhone either. The OS will provide services that will perform some background tasks for applications.

I don't agree. Stepping up to "take accountability" when it's so risky to start new is something I can applaud. They're just so slowww
I really really hope this helps Microsoft wake up. They still have some time, maybe they will fix the broken things.... I hope.
P.S. hahaha "iBox Live" I love it
Is it just me or are the apps in the WP7 market place really ****ty?
I am still trying to figure out whether to go Android or WP7 so i started checking out the market place. Well, my 1st impression is that there is nothing worth it, and when there is they are plain simple without any worth functionality or add-on.
I agree and posted similar on another thread. Really hope they get better very soon
What?
First of all, the market isn't open to the (general) public yet - there's well over 1,000 apps going through the curation process that aren't actually posted yet.
Of what's there right now, you have tons of desirable applications present such as Slacker Radio, IMDB, Shazam, Foursquare, Twitter, etc.
Stop hunting for things to complain about.
What do you mean not open to the public?
Just open your Zune software and you can easily browse the 1000+ apps that are there. Nothing comes even close to the apps that are available for my iPod touch for example.

Start naming apps.
When you've actually TRIED the applications let us know. Screenshots and text descriptions do not an application make. Unless your idevice runs WP7 software already then of course you are correct.
The Harvest is up on marketplace now and that looks sweet.
I thinly before just going hay arnt the apps crap you should look at Android marker and itunes and ask yourself what here is any better that wp7 doesn't have or will have within a very small amount of time. I mean its easy to just go oh there so much rubbish but really how many sound bored fart machines and fake beers do you wan?
I just did a quick counted and there are 532 Apps. Not sure what happed on Zune it is only showing 173 now??
More then I expected considering the phone is not launched yet.
Netflix is up, sprint needs to hurry with a wp7 device the epic is pissing my off
I love how quantity = quality
Well, considering Microsoft said that it will LAUNCH with a thousand + apps already in the market. So now we have to know the policies and regulations one's app must meet to get into the market, this is usually how you can tell if the majority of the apps are garbage, or not... Just like if you can tell, the Facebook app on iPhone is better than the Facebook app on Android. The games on iPhone look and feel nicer, and they tend to fail less often. The stricter the rules are, the more polished they come out, at least that is how I look at it.
I'm just glad that companies like netflix, twitter, ebay etc have official apps for WP7. Having those companies back WP7 is a big deal even if Microsoft had to throw some money their way to do it.

were you honestly expecting WP7 to have 200,000 apps on it's release? And how can you compare a brand new, unlaunched platform to iOS, which has been in dev hands for years?
There are applications still in development, don't criticize until the marketplace catches steam. Also theres applications that Android and Iphone can only dream of such as Cocktail Flow, just look to see.

ok , let us be concrete and give examples.
There are no RSS applications that are worth downloading.RSS application do not even Sync with Google reader. They do not have connectivity with Facebook, ReadItLater, Digg it, etc.....
Even the Shazam app looks a dwarfed version of the one available on the iPhone.
Furthermore everything (text, icons, gfx) all look huge on the screen in all applications. Sacrificing visual granularity in order to claim a faster experience is yet another deceiving wicked way of Microsoft claims.
Take a look at the Sudoku apps, it looks better in a newspaper and a pen. Why can't they check what Sudoku on iPhone looks like and try to beat that or at least copy it.
Come on guys, I can keep on and on with examples. I wouldn't launch a new product with such apps, especially when I claim a 500million dollar marketing campaign. That would be a fiasco just like the KIN before it.
At Christmas time, I will have to decide on either WP7 or Android (I am an Apple hater), so far Android wins on every point.

We kept emphasizing at MIX11 that the information revealed there was geared for developers, not so much consumers and that we expected more details to come forward over time. Combined with the fact that Mango/WP7.5 is not yet finished nor finalized, it's feature-set is still in motion but becoming more solid as we get closer to it going 'Gold'.
On the Windows Phone Developer Podcast, a plethora of new features were announced that will really bring Windows Phone up to par with the competition:
Bing Audio: Think Shazam, but built into Bing and we bet of course Zune Marketplace. Country support is initially limited to the U.S., Great Britain, France, Italy, Spain and Germany.
Bing Vision: A full blown image scanner using your camera. It can detect, identify and search using barcodes, Microsoft Tags, QR Codes, CD’s, DVDs, Books, and text using OCR (see here for history)
Turn-by-turn navigation: “voice guidance during driving directions” (we heard about this awhile ago)
SMS Dictation: Using Microsoft's TellMe service, you can use voice-to-text for SMS messages by tapping a microphone near the bottom
According to Paul Thurrott, who detailed the above, there's a lot more to the podcast, so take a listen. And your thoughts in comments: does this change things?

This will push WP7 over the top. It will ensure a dominant system once the tides change. The more MS can do for WP7, the better. I always preferred the Bing nav in WinMo 6.5 and if this TbT for WP7 will be Bing, outstanding.
Eventually Apple and Android will be playing catch-up to WP7. That's how good a system MS has with WP7.

Now if this is true, this - in combination with all the other goodies Mango's gonna come up with - will bring WP7 at least on par with iOS. And Android, if you leave Android's openness aside. I'm looking forward to it, and I hope Mango will really be released before the end of the year.

well going on what was said at mix and a few other sites have reported it that developers will get a mango image to install on their test devices..
The tiles in Office Hub for documents need to go. What the hell is wrong wiht a list with icons. This wastes too much space. But other than that it looks like it'c coming around well, too bad it's so far off still...
Microsoft needs to grow their user base now. GSII already has 3Mil+ Pre-orders...
nothing matters if the update comes in too late--if ever, for early adopters. and for the most part, the shout-out features of mango are still playing catch up with other OS's.

Agree. I think people tend to forget what we'll have had to use for a year before Mango even touches our phones.
I've kept a rough glance on the apps added to the marketplace over the last month and would estimate that around 2,000 to 3,000 apps are added per month. If this is correct, we can expect to see around 30,000 to 40,000 apps each year. The number of apps added since the beginning last November is up to 39,000. That's 3,250 per month.
If this rate continues as is, in 5 years there will be 200,000. Comparing to the AppStore, which has over 500,000 in the last 3 years. That's roughly 170,000 per year.
And how many are books? A lot of times i see hundreds of books that are flooding the new section in marketplace.
It's true that there are a lot of "useless" apps and ebooks in the WP Marketplace, but as an overall percentage of the total it doesn't seem to be any better or worse than in the iOS or Android markets.
As for the rate of growth, it is accelerating a bit, and looks like it will see around 4500 new apps for November when the month is tallied out. However, as Marty noted, that is still a fair bit behind the rate of growth of "the other guys".
I wonder how much of that difference is due to the (currently) smaller market, and how much of it is due to APIs that are still unavailable to developers on WP, but are available on other platforms. 2012 will be an interesting bellwether for the future of the WP Marketplace.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking too. I wish I had figures for each month over the last year. It would give me an idea about overall growth and what can be realistically expected over the coming year. But just guessing I'd say it will double its performance due to higher visibility and Mango as well as Nokia. It might even come close to tripling.
Now only if they actually supported the apps. Some kind of support please.

Of the apps on my phones, IGN is the only one that really needs support and doesn't get it. I see about the same amount of updating on my WP7 phones as I saw with Android and see with iOS.
One thing I would really love to see in the marketplace is proper categorization of apps and games. The games have their "All" and "new" categories and are also listed in the Apps categories. But the Apps are not listed in any of the games categories. Games being in the Apps category is annoying because when I want to see what's new, I have to wade through a bunch of games.

The growth of the iPhone and Android app stores has been FAR from linear, I don't expect this to be the case for Windows Phone either. Either it'll pick up or it'll die off

That is true, and I agree that growth in the WP Marketplace will likely pick up next year, but looking at the following data suggests that the growth of the the WP Marketplace through October has been fairly linear.

Whereas the growth of the iOS App Store was slightly more nonlinear during its first year.

Yeah, only Apps to receive a update on my phone were HTC Apps. Pulse just got a update and it borked up the live tile and now when I click on it , it opens random articles.
Pissed at the app that I have been raving about, I foolishly purchased Fuse. Someone on here mentioned it to me. I purchased it and its the EXACT same app as Pulse. Same laggy interface, same live tile, only difference Fuse has themes and cost $1.29.
Why can't I upload a pic from this phone? I can't even use the photobucket app to copy a link, wtf!

I could have told you that. Sorry I didn't. Anyway, News360 seems to be even better than the Android version. No live tile, though.

All I'm waiting for is an psx emulator on the market.

Having heard the latest news that Apple was going to be pushing DuckDuckGo instead of Google as their search of choice, I decided to give the site a go, see how good it was. My latest general search inquiries have been about Cyanogenmod on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus (toro) and it didn't take me very long to come to my conclusion upon using the site.....

Apparently it completely skips Cyanogenmod, and focuses on Toro...I have a feeling I wouldn't get much help going this route. Google has XDA first up.
Thought this was funny, thought I'd share. :good:
Its all privacy at the end man I can see why apple would go that route, they gotta keep track somehow

And I get that. But I personally am willing to give up some of my info to get more pertinent results that save me time / money. It's the trade off, privacy for efficiency.
Just to test, even if I pop into Google in a virtual machine, no history, not logged in and type "cyanogenmod tor" the next word suggestions are toroplus, toro m5, and toro gapps. 1st link is the download, 5th link down is XDA. So it's duckduck isn't even close on the very first search I throw at it. Granted, it is a technical search for people not inclined to use Apple in the first place. im rambling. hope you get where im going.
Well it depends on what you search my friend but look at the bright side maybe now that apple will support it it will eventually expand

that's what I was thinking
I believe duck duck go is the default search on Linux mint firefox also though already for a while now, or at least USEDto be, I haven't tried new releases yet of mint. granted it isn't as popular as Apple products, but with more and.more using it, maybe they will be able to improve their search algorithms. it's hard to compete with Google search. hell even Bing seems to face adversity in becoming VERY widely used(I'm talking to the point that people use the name as a VERB... i.e "just Google it" lol) and Microsoft throws Bing in your face everywhere you turn, with a rewards program where you get points for free gift cards and such JUST for USING bing search for ANYTHING
so we can see that it's tough to build a good algorithm for searches when you aren't being used nearly as much as all the competition that have been around for a while already(namely Google, yahoo, Bing, come to mind along with others)
would be nice to see a privacy focused search company able to become easier to use and a viable alternative....aaannnd I'm ramblings again lol
Whatever. Either way Google's monopolized the search engine industry for a while

Good point about Bing, never heard anyone say 'i yahoo'd it' or 'i askjeeved it'
Since afaik duckduckgo just pulls anonymous search results from various different search engines, google included, it's going to be up to the bing and yahoo that still do crawling to improve their results in order for duckduckgo to improve.
Cheers.
Anyone else think that the only reason why Apple is pushing DuckDuckGo is because Google is a direct competitor in the Mobile market?
