More GPS Help - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
First time rooting and running custom ROMs so bear with me. Flashed CM 7.1 stable and when I try to go to google maps it cant find my location. Tried to flash the qualcomm 1.1 drivers but no success either. Tried applying those location configuration files for US that another thread suggested but no success either.
Anyone else successfully install the 7.1 stable and fix GPS issues?
Thanks for the help!

Hopefully, you made a nandroid of your stock setup, but you need to be in a Sense ROM, specifically a stock Sense ROM, d/l GPS Status and MSL Reader from the market, and run MSL Reader and get your MSL. Go to maps. Get a lock. Open GPS Status, get a lock.
Go to dialer and dial ##GPSCLRX#. Use the MSL for the password, your phone will reboot.
Open Maps and GPS Data again, and get your locks.
Go to Recovery, flash CM and then op0en maps and GPS Status again. You should have your locks

Yeah, basically flash (or nandroid restore) a backup of a sense ROM. Enter ##GPSCLRX# in the dialer and enter your msl code as the password. You can find your msl code through the market. Also use GPS status. Go to Google maps, get a lock on your location, restore your cm7 nandroid. This is the only thing that worked for me on cm7 but it seemed temporary, which is why I'm on MIUI now.

Cannot get GPS to work. please help

I have a Verizon Vogue and cannot get the GPS to work. it had the standard ROM on it out of the store then i upgraded it with the official WM6.1 ROM but i let the customizations run. a few weeks later i found a ROM from NFSFAN that i liked so i re-flashed my Vogue with the newer Alltel rom (to get the newer radio) but i didnt let the customizations run that time. i then used the unlocker 2.31 from coke (again not letting customizations run.) i then flashed NFSFAN's ROM. i cannot get the GPS to work. when i run GPSViewer it scans my ports and says it finds a GPS on com 4 at 4800 baud. it seems to successfully open the GPS but it never gets a satellite, i stood outside for 10-15min. i tried it with Google Maps and its never connects. i told Google maps to use windows settings for the GPS, also i tried to tell Google Maps to use Com 4 at 4800 baud and eventually it says no GPS found. i even followed a guide telling me how to use QPST to modify the GPS settings including the ip to the GPS server. any help would be greatly apreciated. i would really like to use Google Navigator from PDAfun.

thanks for the reply but i went through that entire thread and tried all of the different ip's that they suggested and none of them worked. it is annoying me that i cant figure this out. the guide to get this to work is a very simple guide. i just cant seem to get it to work and its not making any sense at all.

yeah, you and alot of other people, some are reporting that VZW has locked down the aGPS/GPS access and found all the hacks and other custom settings and blocked it so it would seem that they are enforcing the $10/moth GPS plan as some are stating that they signed up and got the GPS back
Others of course are saying that switching the port in the registry from 8888 to 8889 works for a while then you have to change it back to get it to work again as well...
Im not on VZW so I couldnt be positive about any of it, just from what Im reading from users on VZW reporting stuff

hey thanks man, i will give that a try. but first i just want to make sure that downgrading the radio will even work and/or wont brick my phone. this is assuming those verizon ROMs do include the radio. also, do i just start step 1 from where i am now with the newer radio and custom ROM currently flashed?

The whole problem is that you let the customizations run in the first place. You need to flash a pre non-GPS ROM & radio. I would not have upgraded to the Alltel Radio as I don't believe that there is really any benefit. This is unless you know people in your geographic region have had success upgrading their radio.
Yes Start with Step #1
When you get to step #4 like it says don't let the customizations run. At this point your GPS should be functioning. You'll need to download the Holux GPS Viewer or the HTC one. Make sure that your phone location setting is turned on & not set for 911. setting--->phone--->services tab---> location setting ---> get settings button with one of these Gps viewers you should be able to get a lock it may take awhile. As long as you start to see red satellite dots you are probably good to go. This means that he GPS is functioning.
You can probably skip the last step if all else goes well.
Good Luck!
wiki works but
when I went through it at the first step. the phone kept on rebooting right after alignment. freaked out a lil bit. But it did stabilize. just keep the sd card out of the phone.

keeping the sd card out of the phone is KEY - after alllll the things i tried, i went back to http://wiki.ppchaven.com/index.php?title=Pocket_PC_WIki:FIX_VERIZON_GPS and ran through it without the SD card in . . . flashed NFSFAN's windows 6.5 v5 ROM, fired up GPS Viewer and for the first time in AGES saw the red satellite dots . . . a few soft resets later and I'm getting 6-7 sats locked on from inside my work!

Once you have your phone unlocked with 2.31 you want to leave it unlocked because otherwise there is a good chance your GPS will not work.
ok i finnaly got my phones gps to work this is what i did reset the pri with the stock rom with the 1.30 radio then updated the radio from bell. No gps hacks were need i get a lock with 7 sat. in about 10 sec. o yea im using my own custom rom.
Tried it all, guess we are going to have to settle
I too have a VZW xv6900 that used to have an awesome GPS, that is now not so awesome. I have tried all the suggestions - from using the telus agps server, switching the ports, using the qpst fix for both vzw and telus, valhalla, removing the memory card, standing on one foot and yelling at it and what it seems to boil down to is no aGPS for vzw users.
Sure you can make the gps work standalone with no aGPS by changing the SUPL gps mode regkey to 2 instead of 4, but it's slower to get fix, doesn't work in buildings very well, and overall crappy compared to what we used to have - which I think is what most people have done (either intentionally or unintentionally) when they say they got it to work.
If anyone has figured out a way to get aGPS working on VZW I would love to hear it... I really miss those instant locks
I did not have to run QPST at all. I made the mistake of running the updated VZW rom which locks gps. Followed steps from the WIKI and flashed NFSFANs newest ROM turned my phone location setting on and I'm picking up satellites quickly.
I got my gps viewer working with port 4, but my current location w/ google map doesn't work. What is going on?

[Q] Issue with ##GPSCLRX# for GPS on CM7

Hey guys, I need a bit of help. I have been using CM7 since build 0, and have been having hte GPS lock issue as everyone else has. I finally got around to going back to a sense ROM to clear the gps using ##GPSCLRX#. When I put that in it asked for the password (MSL code) and I accidentally hit ok, finger slipped. It said password incorrect and I'm not sure if it cleared the GPS or not. I tried to do it again, but when I type in ##GPSCLRX# it just disappears and the password window doesn't come up anymore.
I tried going back to CM7 and then back to a sense ROM, and I can't get that window to pop up again. My GPS still isn't locked consistently, just a quick lock every now and again, so I don't think the clear worked. I don't know how to clear it now.
I tried doing it on Myn's 2.2 and the stock ROM.
Today I did a full wipe and installed a fresh Myn's, and when I type in ##GPSCLRX# it still just disappears from the box, and it never prompts me for a password.
I would really love to get the GPS up and running, because other than that I love cm7. Appreciate the help. If someone can get my GPS up and running well I wouldn't mind donating a few dollars to a beer fund or whatnot.
CM7 RC1 is supposed to have the GPS issues cleared up.
Did you try a factory reset?
RC1 still does it.
I did a full wipe (data/cache/dalvik) when i installed Myn to do the clear, it still wasn't working.
Data wipe via clockwork is the same as factory reset, right?
Maybe this won't help, but you can try unrooting.
Any other suggestions?
Clear Data/Cache on the Dialer in Menu | Settings | Applications? Not sure what else this might muck with.

flash back to frest rom.
copy the attached epst.apk using root explorer to /system/app
when it asks to overwrite accept then install it.
your ## codes should work again.
you can also install 'gps status and tools' and clear the data there
After I went s-on and ran the latest ruu, I had to reapply the GPS fix after I rooted and loaded cm7. I couldn't get the GPS fix to work in Caulkins 1.8. It would reboot and hang at the white evolution screen. I used a rooted copy of the latest stock Tom and everything worked great.

This worked, however I still can't get the GPS to lock. :\
It seems like now I can't even get the GPS activate. If I turn GPS on the icon never comes on in the notification bar. It seems like its only trying to get a lock using the nearest tower or satellite or something.
EVO GPS not locking in GB 2.3
I did a little more research and it turns out that this is a common problem for anyone moving from 2.2 to 2.3 on evo. I found the fix by doing a GPSCLRX from my rooted stock sense rom.
0) Download the 2.3ROM and optional google apps to your sdcard; place it somewhere you can find them when in recovery
1) Download 'msl reader' from android market, run it and record your msl or call Sprint and beg for your msl number and record it for later.
2) ***MOST IMPORTANT PART*** you have to do this from a stock sense ROM. If you made a backup prior to your initial install of a custom ROM just restore it if not get stock ROM from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Supersonic/ROMs
3) Once your stock ROM is up verify your GPS works and locks (GPS toolbox or Maps etc..)
4) With your GPS on; Open dialer and press ##GPSCLRX# or ##4772579#
3) When prompted for the password input your msl code from step 1
4) Phone will reboot in 20 seconds
5) Reboot into recover (power button + down volume)
6) Wipe everything and FLASH 2.3ROM + latest gapps
GPS works

I'm having GPS issues as well. I tried a similar instructions yesterday except I didn't test my GPS when I restored my stock ROM and turn on GPS during GPSCLRX. If i back up my CM7 rc3 now before I try this again can i just use the restore feature again after unlocking GPS or do I have to wipe and manual flash?
** EDIT ** I'm new to this so I want to add that I'm using the SavagedZen Kernel. Do kernels affect GPS? I haven't read that it does but just wanted to add it to help troubleshooting. I restored to stock ROM and confirmed GPS is working. Hope this works...
Works like a charm! I struggled for hours trying to get it to work and then ran across this thread. Thanks a bunch!
Can anyone help?
I'm trying to follow the ##GPSCLRX# fix documented here. I flashed to a Fresh ROM to get Sense, and got my MSL code.
However when I dial ##4772579# the dialer just locks up (looks like a previous poster had the same issue).
I got around it by saving the number as a contact and dialing the contact.
The phone rings twice then says:
"The number or code you have dialed is incorrect. Please check the number or code and try again. Message 7, Switch 351."
I tried dialing the same number from a free alternate dial app, same response.
Any ideas? No GPS really sucks
(And yes, I have double- and triple-checked that I'm dialing the right number. And yes, Sprint is my carrier.)
Oh, and using the GPS Tools app: Tools -> "Manage A-GPS state" -> "Reset" didn't change anything.

crazedfred, I actually had the same problem today. I think it might have something to do with Fresh and not the method to fix it. I originally tried using fresh and encountered the same problem you're having.
Instead, I used Sprint Lovers as my Sense-ROM and followed the same instructions and everything worked out ok. If done correctly, you shouldn't have to dial ##4772579#. Once you input the last pound sign you should be prompted to enter the number from MSL Reader.
Just a note: When I did this today I started to have some data connection issues but I'm not entirely sure if they are related. I'll update if I can figure it out.
I've had these issues any time I moved from sense to aosp...I just flash to stock rooted, run ##gpsclrx#, enter msl and actually use the GPS after reboot...

how to dial ##3282# (DATA) on AOSP Rom?

easily works on sense roms, but how can i dial ##3282# on non-sense roms?
i need to do the streaming fix
You will have to flash back to a sense rom to be able to do it. As of now, no way to call it from an aosp. I know kushdeck said he was working on a way to get it done tho.

As of right now, it is not possible. EPST has to be incorporated into AOSP which is being done right now by Deck. He has been slowly implementing it into his roms but it isn't working as of yet. You will have to flash back to Sense then back to your AOSP.
Can only be done on a sense rom because off the epst. do a nandroid backup of what you got, flash a sense rom, do your fix, and restore..
Edit. Wow third response, definitely need to master this swype a little more
hey ive read you guys replies, thanks
but im coming from a sense rom, and i did the ##3282# fix prior
but when i flashed cm7 it seemed to not be working
but i'l give it a shot (will nandroid, then flash sense,do the fix,and flash back)
i hope it sticks....

For future reference, ##3282# is not for the GPS, it's for Data Profile Restore. ##4772579# is the code for GPSCLRX.

GPS Problems

Was on latest Calkulin and GPS was working fine. Did a nandroid and flashed MIUI and GPS worked fine there as well. Today I decided to restore my Calkulin nandroid and I can't get a lock on GPS for shiitt! I tried GPS Status but it couldn't find any satellites either. I even tried flashing the rom again on top of my nandroid...no go. Is there anything else I can do short of a full wipe?

There's a couple of things you can try.
##GPSCLRX# then a reboot after a couple of minutes. It seems to just sit there after you enter your MSL.
Use GPS Status to reset and download your AGPS data from the Tools menu.
I'm sure you checked but just in case -- is your GPS turned on? I've forgotten before and gotten frustrated after a long period of diagnostics.

Broken GPS! Can't detect or lock on to satellites!

Hey guys,
I got this Samsung Galaxy SIII about a month ago and I don't think I have yet to get a gps lock with this phone. Unfortunately, I didn't try it until after rooting and installing a few different roms.
I unrooted and flashed a stock (bell) rom, factory reset, erase cache, etc. and I still do not know what's wrong with it.
Everything is checked in the "Locations" menu in settings...
I've tried Fasterfix, resetting AGPS from GPS status and GPS test; no dice.
Google navigation just stays in the "searching for your location" screen and it never finds my location.
I've even stayed outside with a clear view of the sky with WIFI and LTE and still couldn't lock on.
I also don't see a GPS icon when it's supposedly in use (my old HTC Desire had this).
I'm kind of speculating whether this is a hardware problem or the GPS somehow got disabled.
I searched and found out there are "secret" codes for the Galaxy SIII, including a GPS menu but it doesn't work with our model, unfortunately.
I'm kind of running out of ideas and trying to avoid sending the phone in. Any help would be great
--------------------------------------------EDIT!!!!!! FIX!!!!------------------------------------
I fixed it!! Special thanks to frelnik for his advice.
After un-rooting and flashing my original firmware/rom I still didn't get my GPS (no icon in status bar).
I rooted again: still no gps notification.
BUT
I flashed graffixnyc's Sprint based rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1956463
I immediately checked my GPS through Google's navigation and the GPS showed up again in the status bar. It eventually found my location!!
I nandroid back to my rooted stock rom and it remained! I can now lock on to 11 satellites from the basement of my home!
Special thanks to both graffixnyc and frelnik!

Did you at any point install a Sprint-based ROM?
If it doesn't work after the steps outline above (I had the same problem, and unfortunately that wasn't enough to fix mine), then flash back the Spring ROM you last used and see if the GPS is working. If it is, then use CWM to restore a stock Nandroid backup from before the problems started. That cleared it up for me, and now my GPS is working in all ROMs once again.
Michael
Yeah I have installed a Sprint-based rom.
Unfortunately I have already odin'd to the stock Bell version and factory reset'd, still doesn't work.
Because of that, I don't really have a nandroid anymore, it got deleted.
I'm gonna try rooting and flashing the Sprint one again (it was the one that was released just this month and ported to our version) and see how that works.

I'm gonna try rooting and flashing the Sprint one again (it was the one that was released just this month and ported to our version) and see how that works.

I can confirm that 1) Odin back to stock, 2) factory reset from phone's sytem settings will get gps back. I Odin'd back to stock rooted image and did the reset. Now running latest Ariel with gps lock within 5-10 seconds. I had run some of the sprint based roms and didn't even notice it was gone until I was on Serenity. Reflashing ATT rom wouldn't fix. I would assume you could get back to stock/working gps, then restore your backup (assuming not sprint based)
Guys I fixed it! Check OP!
