[Q] Issue with ##GPSCLRX# for GPS on CM7 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I need a bit of help. I have been using CM7 since build 0, and have been having hte GPS lock issue as everyone else has. I finally got around to going back to a sense ROM to clear the gps using ##GPSCLRX#. When I put that in it asked for the password (MSL code) and I accidentally hit ok, finger slipped. It said password incorrect and I'm not sure if it cleared the GPS or not. I tried to do it again, but when I type in ##GPSCLRX# it just disappears and the password window doesn't come up anymore.
I tried going back to CM7 and then back to a sense ROM, and I can't get that window to pop up again. My GPS still isn't locked consistently, just a quick lock every now and again, so I don't think the clear worked. I don't know how to clear it now.
I tried doing it on Myn's 2.2 and the stock ROM.
Today I did a full wipe and installed a fresh Myn's, and when I type in ##GPSCLRX# it still just disappears from the box, and it never prompts me for a password.
I would really love to get the GPS up and running, because other than that I love cm7. Appreciate the help. If someone can get my GPS up and running well I wouldn't mind donating a few dollars to a beer fund or whatnot.

CM7 RC1 is supposed to have the GPS issues cleared up.

Did you try a factory reset?

RC1 still does it.
I did a full wipe (data/cache/dalvik) when i installed Myn to do the clear, it still wasn't working.
Data wipe via clockwork is the same as factory reset, right?

Maybe this won't help, but you can try unrooting.

Any other suggestions?

Clear Data/Cache on the Dialer in Menu | Settings | Applications? Not sure what else this might muck with.

flash back to frest rom.
copy the attached epst.apk using root explorer to /system/app
when it asks to overwrite accept then install it.
your ## codes should work again.
you can also install 'gps status and tools' and clear the data there

After I went s-on and ran the latest ruu, I had to reapply the GPS fix after I rooted and loaded cm7. I couldn't get the GPS fix to work in Caulkins 1.8. It would reboot and hang at the white evolution screen. I used a rooted copy of the latest stock Tom and everything worked great.

This worked, however I still can't get the GPS to lock. :\
It seems like now I can't even get the GPS activate. If I turn GPS on the icon never comes on in the notification bar. It seems like its only trying to get a lock using the nearest tower or satellite or something.

EVO GPS not locking in GB 2.3
I did a little more research and it turns out that this is a common problem for anyone moving from 2.2 to 2.3 on evo. I found the fix by doing a GPSCLRX from my rooted stock sense rom.
0) Download the 2.3ROM and optional google apps to your sdcard; place it somewhere you can find them when in recovery
1) Download 'msl reader' from android market, run it and record your msl or call Sprint and beg for your msl number and record it for later.
2) ***MOST IMPORTANT PART*** you have to do this from a stock sense ROM. If you made a backup prior to your initial install of a custom ROM just restore it if not get stock ROM from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Supersonic/ROMs
3) Once your stock ROM is up verify your GPS works and locks (GPS toolbox or Maps etc..)
4) With your GPS on; Open dialer and press ##GPSCLRX# or ##4772579#
3) When prompted for the password input your msl code from step 1
4) Phone will reboot in 20 seconds
5) Reboot into recover (power button + down volume)
6) Wipe everything and FLASH 2.3ROM + latest gapps
GPS works

I'm having GPS issues as well. I tried a similar instructions yesterday except I didn't test my GPS when I restored my stock ROM and turn on GPS during GPSCLRX. If i back up my CM7 rc3 now before I try this again can i just use the restore feature again after unlocking GPS or do I have to wipe and manual flash?
** EDIT ** I'm new to this so I want to add that I'm using the SavagedZen Kernel. Do kernels affect GPS? I haven't read that it does but just wanted to add it to help troubleshooting. I restored to stock ROM and confirmed GPS is working. Hope this works...

Works like a charm! I struggled for hours trying to get it to work and then ran across this thread. Thanks a bunch!

Can anyone help?
I'm trying to follow the ##GPSCLRX# fix documented here. I flashed to a Fresh ROM to get Sense, and got my MSL code.
However when I dial ##4772579# the dialer just locks up (looks like a previous poster had the same issue).
I got around it by saving the number as a contact and dialing the contact.
The phone rings twice then says:
"The number or code you have dialed is incorrect. Please check the number or code and try again. Message 7, Switch 351."
I tried dialing the same number from a free alternate dial app, same response.
Any ideas? No GPS really sucks
(And yes, I have double- and triple-checked that I'm dialing the right number. And yes, Sprint is my carrier.)
Oh, and using the GPS Tools app: Tools -> "Manage A-GPS state" -> "Reset" didn't change anything.

crazedfred, I actually had the same problem today. I think it might have something to do with Fresh and not the method to fix it. I originally tried using fresh and encountered the same problem you're having.
Instead, I used Sprint Lovers as my Sense-ROM and followed the same instructions and everything worked out ok. If done correctly, you shouldn't have to dial ##4772579#. Once you input the last pound sign you should be prompted to enter the number from MSL Reader.
Just a note: When I did this today I started to have some data connection issues but I'm not entirely sure if they are related. I'll update if I can figure it out.

I've had these issues any time I moved from sense to aosp...I just flash to stock rooted, run ##gpsclrx#, enter msl and actually use the GPS after reboot...

Broke my 3g! :((

Ok, so I was running MIUI and I needed to do the 3g fix to get my data speeds up to par. Here are the steps I followed:
Go to the Market and download the app: MSL Reader
Use this app to get your MSL #
Flash to any GingerSense ROM (I used VR_GengerSense_Revolution_B4 with success. Has the nicest boot animation I have seen. ROM so pretty I stayed away from MIUI for a minute LOL.)
Launch phone dialer and dial ##DATA# (##3282#)
Select Edit Mode
Enter the MSL Number from above as the password
Select Data Profile
Press Menu button
Select Restore
Your phone will enter Commit mode and automatically reboot
Nandroid back to MIUI and enjoy better 3G speeds!
I got as far as commit mode, the phone didn't automatically reboot so I did it manually. The phone got stuck at the white screen where I pulled the battery, then just gave up and went back to MIUI. When I was back in MIUI, I saw I didn't have data at all! So then I went back to the GingerSense ROM and tried to do the data fix again, but to no avail. I have no 3g. When I am in the edit mode in data profile my username is blank, whereas there was something there before I tried to restore data. Are there any fixes for this?
Flash another sense rom snd see what you get

Yes, try a different Sense ROM. I have performed this fix countless times with no issues and have recommended it with great success.
I'm not sure why your phone did not reboot on its own, but it should have. Flash back to Sense and update your profile Settings>Updates (I think) then perform the ##DATA# fix. While you are at it, update your Radio, etc. to the latest.
You guys were right! I just tried another sense rom and it worked like a charm! And updating my profile from settings gave my 3g back before I did the 3g fix

More GPS Help

Hi All,
First time rooting and running custom ROMs so bear with me. Flashed CM 7.1 stable and when I try to go to google maps it cant find my location. Tried to flash the qualcomm 1.1 drivers but no success either. Tried applying those location configuration files for US that another thread suggested but no success either.
Anyone else successfully install the 7.1 stable and fix GPS issues?
Thanks for the help!
Hopefully, you made a nandroid of your stock setup, but you need to be in a Sense ROM, specifically a stock Sense ROM, d/l GPS Status and MSL Reader from the market, and run MSL Reader and get your MSL. Go to maps. Get a lock. Open GPS Status, get a lock.
Go to dialer and dial ##GPSCLRX#. Use the MSL for the password, your phone will reboot.
Open Maps and GPS Data again, and get your locks.
Go to Recovery, flash CM and then op0en maps and GPS Status again. You should have your locks
Yeah, basically flash (or nandroid restore) a backup of a sense ROM. Enter ##GPSCLRX# in the dialer and enter your msl code as the password. You can find your msl code through the market. Also use GPS status. Go to Google maps, get a lock on your location, restore your cm7 nandroid. This is the only thing that worked for me on cm7 but it seemed temporary, which is why I'm on MIUI now.

[Q] [SOLVED] Stuck on 1x

Hey, I'm running cm7 and I've been stuck on 1x for only god knows how long. I know there is 3g around because when I first got the phone it worked. After flashing different roms it seems to not want to connect to 3g anymore at all. Why is this?

call sprint and see if there is an outage
Are you somehow stuck on roam only?
You might need to reset your phone through obtaining your MSL code. I flashed my friend's phone incorrectly in the past before lost his 3G.

I think this may be my problem. I do roam sometimes when I never had before. What should I do in order to fix this?
I am pretty sure there isn't an outage because my friend on sprint has been tooling around on 3g.
I'm able to toggle between the 1x and 4g, but I can't connect to 3g. :-/

If I just switched to the stock kernel and then back to the savaged zen one I'm using now, could this fix my error? Just a thought.

I had this exact sh_t happen to me after a flight from Portland to Boston. What I had to do was flash Sense, wipe, then re-flash CM7 (I think it was Deck's ROM).
See if that helps

Eh.. I mighta been usin' Tiamat (this was like 4 mos ago).
This really works!
I had the same exact problem and this worked for me. I found it on goodandevo.net
After following these directions I upgraded to the latest prl and maintain 3g.
'Turn off your GPS. Dial ##3282#, and select Edit. Enter your MSL, then go to Data Profile. Push the menu button, then tap on Restore. Push OK to reboot. Allow the phone to go through hands-free activation, but WATCH YOUR PHONE CAREFULLY AND PRESS CANCEL WHEN IT BEGINS TO UPDATE PRL.'
Found this in the comments here: http://www.goodandevo.net/2011/09/stuck-at-1xrtt-on-your-htc-evo-3d-heres-how-to-get-3g-back.html
Obviously, first you will have to flash a ROM that has working EPST, after restoring 3g, it should hold thru all following flashes.
I have this problem occur on CM7 randomly as well. I just turn off mobile data for about 5 mins then turn it back on and it seems to fix the problem. Least till the next time.

I've followed your instructions and I read up on that website. I've dragged the two files on to my SDcard and placed the one it told me to in system/app. Rebooted my phone and tried to type in ##3282# and nothing happens. It just dials the number. There isn't an option for me to press edit and type in a MSL code. I press menu and there isn't even an option similar to that. I read up that it's probably due to me using a third party dialer. I am using cm7, so is there a way for me to just show the stock dialer for a second to do this and then go back to the dialer that is set for cm7?

I think the simpliest thing to do would be to flash a stock rom and make your changes and then flash back to your prefered rom. Thats what I did. Flash the stock rom, use EPST and then flash back to CM7. You should have working 3g.

Yeah, I was pulling my hair out too. Happy it worked for you.

is the White different then the Black?

I have a black Epic 4G Touch rooted and running EuroSkank just fine. I actually haven't experienced any issues besides video camera with effects causes FC. But I have a friend who has the white Epic 4G Touch and we rooted it, got a custom recovery and all went smooth. The second we put on the ROM on his phone he now is unable to make/Receive Calls and send/receive text/mms messages. Is there a color specific ROM? I tried flashing all sorts of ROMs to the device to fix it, but to no avail can I get it to work.
i have a white one and it works well with all kinds of custom roms. i believe they are the same.

White and black are essentiall the same phone.
Sounds like a network issue.
You could try a complete Stock+Root with an OTA build from sfhub http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229 .
This should set everything right.
OR
You could try reseting the network settings. You'll need your MSL and a stock dialer.
Hands Free Activation/Network Reset:
Open dialer then ##72786# (factory reset on network settings)
Enter your MSL and hit OK
On the SCRTN screen select yes
Phone will auto reboot and take you to Hands Free Activation
If you have an SD card, media scanner will do its thing first.
Re-activation will initiate, let it run (DO NOT TOUCH THE SCREEN, no need to Press OK it will continue on its own)
Phone will then update Profile, then PRL, (you can select cancel when it searches for Firmware update if you want)
Phone will reboot again.
To get you MSL (if you're rooted)
1. Download "Terminal Emulator" from the app market.
2. Open Terminal Emulator.
3. type in getprop ril.MSL (make sure the .MSL is capitalized)
4. Press enter and poof, you have your MSL
Good luck
alright I found the problem. It wasn't the ROM at all, it wasn't the RIL, it wasn't anything to do with the custom ROM. It was actually his line that was having problems with the switch. We got it all figured out and the phone works great now. Thank you for your responses on getting it back up and working. We put a test line on the phone and it called just fine, so we found the issue was actually on his number. Phone fixed, and we are rocking the custom Jelly Bean again. Thank you everyone!

[Fix:] Broken LTE/Mobile Data/GPS

Hello XDA,
As many of you have been flashing custom ROMs; some of you have had an issue regarding broken mobile data/LTE/GPS has arisen. I too had this same issue when I was flashing ROMs and decided to post my fix. This is a guide that MAY fix your problem. NO GUARANTEES
For this to work properly you MUST be on a STOCK TW ROM. I used S3R.x's ROM but you can use whatever works for you. After you have gone back to a Stock TW ROM follow the steps outlined below:
1. Enter the Samsung service mode by typing this code into the dial pad *#197328640#
2. Then go to Mainmenu>UMTS>Common>NV REBUILD>NV REBUILD> (Important: don't exit the menu yet!)
3. Wait 30+ sec
4. Long press power button and select "Restart / Reboot"
5. Now check your GPS from any software that may use GPS like "Maps" or "GPS Status"
6. Flash your favorite ROM and go about your merry way!
Credit: S3R.x ROM Development Thread
Again this is a fix that worked for me and may not work for everyone. Also if any of this info is wrong or needs corrections, I am always open to suggestions! :highfive:
I get a connection problem or invalid MMI code error.
I can still make phone calls and sends and receive texts though.

Worked wonders on stock rom after 4.4.2 update. had lost all gps and glonass, now the reset has brought my phone back from almost being thrown out of a 3 story high window to the ground. I also reset gps from the GPS Status app as well and downloaded the Xtra data and a-gps data. locks in seconds now. Thanks so much for the assistance.
