So yesterday stupid me decided to mess with my rom. I flashed to the starburst ROM and now my signal strength is terrible and my phone laggs so oooooooo bad. It basically can't doanything. I really need to know how to get it back to COMPLETE STOCK. factoryreset does nothing. I could even use a working stock rom. I have Clockworkmod btw.

Sorry the lag is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad. But it sounds like you didnt follow directions on flashing the rom. Did someone forget to format /system?
Anyway, what your looking for is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1281287
FYI it was on page 2. Next time at least try to look. mmk?

I really need to know just how to get it back to complete stocj. Im done with these ROMS and roots

How do i know if it installed the ROM correctly? I formated/data and system then installed the Starburst rom from my SD

You'll have to wait for an official update to get a full stock tar. The one that is out is really a kernel. From what was said the one that was on Sanny's website won't get past the 4G screen.
To really go to stock there is Zedomax's, but from what I am told he replaced the animation with his logo.
To get back to stock is on here somewhere. Good luck my friend.

If the O.P would just browse the development section, it's right there. Stock EG30 tar plus ODIN to get back to complete stock. It can't be past the first page.

Flashing CM9 freezes mid install

So I have been trying to flash CM9 for the past couple of days, at first it worked just fine but I forgot google apps, so I went back to recovery and flashed gapps. After that it wouldn't leave the boot screen. I used odin to put a stock ICS rom on, then flashed clockwork and now every time I try to install cm9 It just stops on "installing." Did I miss something very simple and obvious or what?
How long are you letting it sit on "install"?
I've tried several time's usually only a few minutes, but at one point I left to the store and came back like an hour later and it was still on installing. Had to pull the battery every time, then I have to use odin because I can't get into recovery.

You need to follow the instructions to the letter .... and when you get it flashed if it don't boot go back into stock recovery and wipe data and it should boot

OK, I'm going through it again, but I did forget to mention one thing that might be important. After I odin CWM, my current rom does not boot though I can boot to cwm. Is that expected?

The directions say go back and flash cm7 are you trying to go from ics to cm9 ? If so your risking a brick be safe

Oh damn, there is a CM7? I can't find that one at all. Any help on that would be appreciated. However I did just get past the install so maybe it will work(hopefully without creating a brick).
EDIT: It booted seems to be working well. I would like a cm7 link if any one has it though, just in case

[Q] Q's about flashing ICS

Hey I had a ics ROM and then I restored a Ginger Bread backup. Do I have to do anything. It worked and just put everything back the way it was before I flashed the ics ROM.

Do you mean stock? As in the way it was when you first bought it?
---------- Post added at 11:49 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:42 AM ----------
Well if you did want it bone stock again but with ROOT then I have a link that takes you to Zedomax's website where he has a download that includes root: http://epic4gtouchroot.com/epic-4g-touch-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s2-epic-4g-touch-newsph-d710/
To do it just follow the instructions and it will remove everything off of the phone and return it to stock W/root. To remove root just download ES file manager from the "Play Store", I hate that name, and then find the superuser.apk and remove it.
He says how to do this on his website. That's actually how I got into flashing and rooting and all this nonsense. ^^b
Make sure you put you phone into download mode before you connect your phone and also make sure you have KIES with the drivers installed on your computer.
I flashed a ics ROM and did not like it so I restored a android backup of the blazer 4.0 ROM.
As much as I am confused by the OP, anyone else think it's wierd that someone would link to some other site for getting back to stock on XDA? What with all the resources available right here?

The thing you have to remember is I've been on here less then a month and I used that other website as my learning tool so it's all I know! ^^
I would use this website but I'm finding it impossible to find anything since this is the first forum I've ever joined/been on.
Excuse me if I've offended anyone it wasn't intentional I'm just trying to be helpful.

No, no offense taken, at all, helpful is helpful, and always appreciated.
Check "sfhub"s posts in the development section. He has Very easy "one click" restore downloads, and "qbking"s videos on YouTube, he's a favorite here for super easy walkthroughs on doing Anything et4g related. ;-)
The reason I was concerned about the op was that Many people have been getting permanent bricks doing what he says he did, so check out a sticky thread in general titled " how not to brick your et4g ".

I guess im good to go. I just wanted to know it if was safe for me to flash a ics ROM I am waiting for a stable ROM.
Hate to say it Paden, but your posts have not been very clear.
When posting here, it's very important to be very detailed about what rom you're on, what you flashed, in what order, and any symptoms or problems you are having.
If I've got it correctly...
You flashed some ICS rom, didn't like it, then flashed back to Blazer's?
And things are working?
You didn't do a complete stock restore first?
What recovery was built into the ICS rom?
What kind of wiping did you do before flashing?
And why are you looking for another ics ROM to flash to?...
Sent from my calculator watch.
very cool

How do you do that
I was going to post a thread asking a similar question. I've been running blazer for a while, and eventually I downloaded the Goodness and ran with it for a week. It was nice and all but for the moment I still prefer GB...however, my nandroid backup didn't work, it told me I had an MD5 mistmatch. So I just went into the ICS recovery and reflashed Blazer no problem. It's been perfect since. Afterwards I was reading the thread on how to not brick your phone, and it said to do exactly the opposite of that. Does that make me the luckiest man in the world? or am I missing something. Would it be okay to try it again?

It's all luck, the current ICS recovery is very iffy on flashing and even wiping data is bricking some devices, if you want to continue using your phone I suggest making a nandroid backup before you flash ICS then flash ICS, and if you wish to go back to GB then ODIN to EL29 and install clockwork mod and restore nandroid, or it won't be long before you have some fancy paperweight.
MultiLockOn said:

Make sure u do a nandroid back up using the gb recovery before u try these steps...... Simple lets saY u are on blazers 4.0 rom n u have a zip of a ics rom put it on your sdcard go into recovery n do a full wipe i use calkins full wipe then i flash the ics rom keep in mind that after you flash the ics rom you will lose your gb recovery n you will have a ics recovery n if you don't like the ics rom u can go to the ics recovery n restore ur nandroid backup make sure to do a full wipe before restoring your backup n when you finish your restore you will have your gb rom n ur gb recovery... Ive done this like a million times n never had a problem BUT DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK... ONE MORE THING I NEVER FLASH ANY ROM USING A ICS RECOVERY

As long a your just restoring a backup from ics recovery you're fine, it may be a problem when flashing roms from it that results to bricking. So if i read right from your beginning post all you did was just restore so you're fine.

Just got my ota ics update, now what?

Im just running stock rooted tw. I just got the ics update pushed to my phone and I want to update. I know it won't fly because of cwm recovery. What's the best way to upgrade to ics from here?
I one of these days when ive got time I will be loading a custom rom. I dabbled with cm9 a bit, but what I need is a stable rom that has a good strong radio and GPS. So that's why I'm hanging with stock for now.

Why not just use SFHubs FF18 One Click, no data then run this to disable the OTA msg if you continue to get that?

And according to sfhub, and others, having root alone should not prevent the update. Though some have said it's failed.
The latest OTA is said to fix swype, and that's it.. But that's just a matter of clearing swype cache.
Why not try the update? Everyone is having their own experiences, bad / good battery life, phantom reboots, lockups, great reception.. etc..
Why not try it out? You can always change it..

I ultimately tried it, but I'm screwed. I edited my Droidsansfallback.ttf to get soft emojis for my phone. During the update it stopped and said something about the file. I think it meant it was unverified. It also had a string of letters and numbers after it (DroidSansFallback.ttf, be7fksdsk1333, 340dj3045, etc). I'm re-downloading the stock rom in hopes that it will fix everything, but I chose no data wipe so I don't know.

Give an update after if you don't mind.
Are you going back stock el29 for the OTA or just using the ff18?
Did you make a backup of droidsansfallback prior to editing?
:edit: I'm wondering if you had the update still in cache and went with a stock ttf and tried replying the update. I don't know if a fail clears it out of cache though..

It's going to take an extremely long time [or a place with better reception] to download this. If someone could just send me the ttf it would be awesome.
I'm going back to stock rooted EL29. If I get another issue, I'll enable temp root. I did not make a backup of DSFB, unfortunately.

Personally? I would root and use a custom recovery to flash a nicely built rom. But that's what I would do.
I can either get you the update zip, and some links are still active to the latest OTA, or you can go custom.

There are plenty of custom ics roms in the Dev section. And el29 is 2.3.6 btw depends on what you want, aosp(cm9, aokp) or tw(blu kuban, goodness, venum ice, etc) lots of choices, I personally only use aosp roms and exclusively aokp out of the choices. I'm not a fan of tw the UI looks like something my 5yo made with his crayons

Crawrj still has his link active. Very recent update and you can use the stock recovery to use as the update. Just say the word of you don't know how to boot into recovery and apply. No need to rename but you can of you like, just name it update.zip and place into your sdcard.

I have been on ICS since the update and although i like the interface i have been having nothing but problems. i ended up backing up with titanium and doing a reset of the phone, still having issues although not as much with the wifi.
phone freezes at time, wifi needs to be refreshed at times, phone runs slow and somewhat choppy (removed live wallpaper to help relieve.), when i click on apps there is like a fading delay transition into the app. Oh and battery will not last more thank 5 and a half hours... and that is with light to no use.
I am no thinking of going with a custom rom ( i am rooted with oden). what rom should i go with that will give a similair look to ics but without all the problems.
thanks

Is that 5 1/2 hours on screen time or total battery life?
And there are several Stock "look and feels" in the Dev section. As with any Rom, YMMV. It's just a matter of taste and all anyone can really suggest is reading through the threads and seeing what appeals to you. Read through in it's entirety to get known issues, compliments, fixes, adjustments, etc..

[Q] How do I ditch cm10?

alrighty then. I have been playing with my phone for about 2 hours now trying to figure out how to get rid of CM10 so I can flash a new ROM. (had to find dev options etc.) I tried flashing a recovery image through the SGS tool kit, still had CM10. I tried re-rooting (not advised, had a small stroke while figuring out if I bricked or soft bricked) I just did a system wipe, also ill advised, it warned me that I had no OS (thats why we make nandroids like good lil boys and girls.)
For the love of Jeebus someone please tell me how to get CM10 off of my phone so I can flash a new ROM. can I un-root and re-root and start from scratch that way? is that proper? is there an easier way? Why am I asking all these questions?! (because no matter what, I will always be a NooB -.-')
I appreciate any insight you guys can give me, thanks in advance!

Just wipe data, cache and dalvik then flash new rom. No reason whatsoever to flash another stock rom to flash the one you want

Idk who told you you needed to go back to stocm b4 flashing another rom but they were wrong. I've been flashing roms for a few years on 7 different phones and 5 tablets and never once went back to stock before changing roms

its a habit from the Vibrant. flashing back to stock prevented the possibility of "ghost files." it just kind of ensured everything rolled along smoothly. The reality is that flashing over CM10 is looking like my only option without having to break out good Ol' Command Prompt lol. I appreciate your help guys.!

Just wipe in recovery to get rid of the last roms data and files. You could always odin to stock if you really wanted to but its just extra steps that aren't needed

got stuck n a boot loop a dozen times, finally said to hell with it and found a stock .tar.MD5 and Odin'd this pig. Again, I appreciate y'alls' help.
Don't forget to nandriod before flashing. It will help you when you need it most.
What recovery were you using? I have used twrp with no problems

[Q] Need Help Flashing a ROM

Hi guys, sorry if this is stupid. I've flashed ROMs to 3 or 4 phones before this one and didn't have any issues with them, but this time around it doesn't seem so easy. My phone is a virgin mobile galaxy s2 (d710)
My phone has been rooted for a while and my stock ROM started randomly freezing up on me 4-5 times/day, so I finally decided to flash a ROM. The stickied post says to use odin mobile to flash to GB - EL26 Stock w/ CWM then to flash the ROM I want. Any ROM I tried flashing gave a status 7 error and aborted, EXCEPT for one ROM, and on that one I didn't even have working 3G? I believe this thread implied doing it any other way would be a hard brick.
I finally ended up using samsung's official upgrade tool in download mode to flash back to stock ROM, but it would be nice to get a custom on now that I've put time into it.
Can anyone point me in the direction I need to go?
Thanks
EDIT: I'm currently on the 4.1.2 stock ROM

I'm guessing you're trying to flash a KitKat ROM? Using Mobile Odin and EL26CWM will work when flashing 4.2.2 (and under) ROMs, but not KitKat. You'll need the last Blasphemy 6.6 kernel (just for the updated ClockworkMod), located in Original Development, for that.
In your case, you'll probably want to flash FJ12 or FL26 (if you can find it) modem zips, as you're on Virgin Mobile, and those are ICS Virgin Mobile modems, which you'll need to have working data/internet on Any AOSP ROM (JB modems won't work).
And this guide is assuming you're completely stock JB firmware, not rooted.

It looks like I'm on GB28 stock. I think agats caused a soft brick. I'm reflashing back to stock again now....I don't know what's going on with this phone.
Edit: Retried, got it to work this time. Thanks.
Is there a reason why you have to flash one recovery just to move onto another one? Would any recovery work installing any ROM? I'm a bit confused by all these different recoveries, since my last phone only needed one.

On this device, recovery comes bundled with the kernel. When you flash a ROM or kernel, the recovery that was on gets overwritten by the recovery that comes with the ROM/kernel you're flashing.
The reason everybody started using EL26CWM (gingerbread kernel) was due to a bug in the stock ICS firmware that was causing some people's devices to be permanently bricked when doing a factory reset.
Status 7 error when flashing is usually due to using a recovery that's too old.
So to answer your question... No, there is no "be-all, end-all" recovery for this device. Sorry [emoji20]
Glad you got it working though

Thanks for the help. Now that I'm running CM11, I don't have visual voicemail and it looks like I can't receive MMS.
Serious props to the people that use custom ROMs that aren't driven insane by bugs, I'm irritated by it already.
Know of any fix?
I don't know about visual voicemail... I'm flashed to Cricket and just use the built-in voicemail statusbar notification. Have you tried pushing the apk manually? I'm pretty sure I've seen Virgin Mobile fixes here in the d710 forum.
As far as MMS goes, have you tried messing with the APN's? I don't think MMS will work as-flashed, out-of-the-box for you without modifying them for Virgin.
If you're getting annoyed by bugs, have you given stock, rooted deodexed GB28 a try? When i get the TouchWiz itch, I run deodexed GB28, along with Agat's 1.3 kernel, TD's AIO mod, and Missing Link mod (both found in Themes and Apps of this forum).
I'm currently running Slimbean build 7 (4.2.2) as it's super lightweight, stable, and has good battery-life.

Do you know where I could find the voicemail apk?
Also, where can I mess with the APNs/what would work there?
The only reason I want a custom ROM at all is to be on KitKat. It honestly disgusts me a bit that google hasn't standardized versions....I don't get why every phone needs it's own ROM and never gets updated....
Thanks man.
Edit: I did find a MMS fix and visual voicemail all in one zip, but flashing it screwed the phone and I had to restore in recovery.
As far as editing APN's, I use Nova Prime launcher to create a shortcut on my homescreen to access them. Create shortcut to Activities/Settings/APNs and make your edits there.
Have you tried extracting the contents of the zip and manually applying those changes? Sorry but I wouldn't know anything else about configuring for Virgin. Maybe you could ask in that respective ROM thread, as I'm sure there are Virgin Mobile users there that have everything working.

Thanks for the ideas, I'm a bit slow sometimes when it comes to android/linux. I pulled the apk out of the zip, installed it, that's working fine. I just need to find a fix for my MMS. I can send but not receive.
Edit: I found a way to open the APN settings using voice dialer, but it's blank and choosing to add one, it does not save.

Just for clarification, if I want to flash a new ROM when I'm already on a custom, do I need to use odin mobile to flash back to that GB rom with CWM before I flash the recovery and new ROM? Or can I just wipe and flash new recovery from the one I have now?

If the new recovery you are talking about is safe to flash from...and the one you are currently using is safe to flash from...then you can just reboot recovery and wipe cache and dalvik, then flash new recovery and then reboot recovery. Now you will be on the new, safe, recovery. So do your wipes ( data, cache, dalvik cache and format system ) and flash the rom.
If you want to go the mobile odin way..in case the recovery you currently have cant flash the new recovery you need, in order to flash the rom of choice..which im assuming is kitkat. As it needs the most up to date recovery to flash properly.
Then i have a simple guide you can follow to flash a safe kernel/recovery, in which you can then flash the newer recovery for flashing the rom you have choosen.
Link to guide. Post 5 is what you need to read.
If this sounds complicated or confusing..please post a link to current rom you wish to install and i will read the op and point you down the correct path.
Thanks, I was looking to use either of these. I've had issues with ROMs so far because I'm on Virgin Mobile and lots of stuff is buggy. Not sure which of these will work best:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/epic-4g-touch/orig-development/rom-liquidsmooth-v3-1-t2803683
I'm not normally confused by rooting/flashing, but I don't understand the whole "safe recovery" thing.

I see. Im not too familiar with what works with virgin mobile.
But if you can flash a virgin modem and set your apns after a flash.. That will get your data working. I'm at work.. But let me refewsh my memory later about virgin mobile on this device and I'll hit ya back.
Fyi.. I think jdsingle made a virgin mobile rom a while back.

Thanks, I looked for jdsingle and only found posts for 3D Evo I believe; no activity since 2011?

Yeah, I tried that one, it continually crashed my launcher every 3 seconds, had to reflash the ROM. It did give me the voicemail apk I needed though! Really if I could just get flash instructions for going from one rom to another, I'd be set probably.
Have you tried applying the changes and setting permissions in the zip manually, like with Root Explorer?

No, I'm honestly not sure how to do that. Linux's file structure is confusing to me. Granted I'm also having wifi problems on this rom too, it disconnects all the time.

It honestly isn't too difficult at all. All I see in the zip is a new apns-conf.xml (permissions are rw-r-r), 2 build.prop edits, and the deleting of telephony.db located in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases
