So I have been trying to flash CM9 for the past couple of days, at first it worked just fine but I forgot google apps, so I went back to recovery and flashed gapps. After that it wouldn't leave the boot screen. I used odin to put a stock ICS rom on, then flashed clockwork and now every time I try to install cm9 It just stops on "installing." Did I miss something very simple and obvious or what?
How long are you letting it sit on "install"?
I've tried several time's usually only a few minutes, but at one point I left to the store and came back like an hour later and it was still on installing. Had to pull the battery every time, then I have to use odin because I can't get into recovery.

You need to follow the instructions to the letter .... and when you get it flashed if it don't boot go back into stock recovery and wipe data and it should boot

OK, I'm going through it again, but I did forget to mention one thing that might be important. After I odin CWM, my current rom does not boot though I can boot to cwm. Is that expected?

Oh damn, there is a CM7? I can't find that one at all. Any help on that would be appreciated. However I did just get past the install so maybe it will work(hopefully without creating a brick).
EDIT: It booted seems to be working well. I would like a cm7 link if any one has it though, just in case

I picked up an Epic today, and for the life of me, I cant seem to get things to flash right. I'm no stranger to this sort of thing (G1, MTS, HD2, NS4G)... but this phone is just giving me trouble.
First time I tried things, I followed everything here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091680
The oneclick worked without a problem, the rom appeared to flash fine in clockwork, but would not boot. I'd get the samsung logo, then a black screen, and there i'd sit. Couldn't get past it. After several wipes and reflashes, I decided to start over and Odin back to stock.
So now, on round two, I followed this instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076967. Same idea, just, as I understand, a newer version of clockwork? Again, root and clockwork installed fine. I followed the instructions to convert to EXT4 to the letter, which all went without error. I then flashed this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=873347. I made sure to get the EXT4 version. Flashed, rebooted, and it gets stuck at the Samsung logo.
So, odin back to stock again. Can anyone help me try to figure out what I am missing here? I've followed all instructions completely to the letter, and the best I can tell I'm using the correct roms. Any ideas?
Maybe simple, but I know in the clockwork menu when you are flashing the rom there are two choices that look similar. One is update and one update from zip. Make sure you are choosing the right one.

I'm choosing the right one. I've got plenty of experience finding my way around clockwork, which is why i'm so baffled as to why this isn't working. I'm no stranger to the steps involved here. Either I'm not understanding something, or i'm flashing the wrong roms. Just trying to figure out where i'm going wrong.
What ROMS have you tried?

If you used CWM 3.0.2.5 it does not convert to EXT4. You have to run another script to convert before flashing an EXT4 ROM. You have to flash the ROM before booting right after the conversion.
Try running this script from CWM just make sure you have the ext4 room you want to use on the card LOL yes I have made that mistake DOH!

Try using clockworkmod 3.1.0.1 and flash sfr 1.1.1 again.... On sfr 1.1.1 do NOT wipe anything before you flash

Appears to have worked this time, its booting now. Thanks for the help guys!
Well... I broke it. I'm rather confused by how things work with this phone.
I did what ya'll said, and as told, did not wipe (despite reaaaally wanting to.) The rom booted and such, but I had lots of problems. I attributed this to lack of wiping. I really wanted a fresh go.
So, I decided to try again. I wiped and reflashed this rom. Now... won't boot again, just sits on a black screen. I don't get it. Why am I not allowed to wipe data when using this rom?

+1 what he said also after u flash you might want to enable journaling
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ix6vr18uid3q4uh/JournalingOn.zip
Where your phone seems to be a little temperamental I would recommend it for the best experience.
It says on the rom page not to wipe... I didnt wipe coming from midnight rom and acs script took care of everything while flashing... I havent had one fc and no problems yet.... I wonder what the issue is

Decided to just completely start from scratch. I did exactly this:
Odin back to stock
One-click 3.0.2.5
RFS2EXT4
Flash SFR-1.1.1
Didn't wipe anything, this is ALL I did. This worked. I still don't understand why I had all this trouble in the first place? Is it the phone, or am I doing something I shouldn't? It seems like the issue is with wiping before flashing. So, what happens if I want to try a different ROM? I can't imagine I need to Odin back to stock every time...

What does this do? Doing a google search gave me instructions on how to enable/disable journaling, but it's not a term i'm familiar with and nothing actually explained why I'd want to do this.
This issue is with stock EC05. It has something weird going on especially the OTA that requires wiping. Same for the new Bonsai release, wipes only needed colming from stock EC05.
Do you BONSAI?

Journaling allows for the extra write to the phone so there is no corruption if you have to pull the battery or you drop it and the battery falls out. If it is not enabled then you might get a lot of FC's after replacing battery and booting up. Also FYI with this phone when you shut it off and the screen is black and the home lights are out it is NOT truly OFF until you fell the quick VIBRATION then it is truly off.
You shouldn't have to go back to stock each time but it seems that you might be having some other issue. You using the stock USB cable? Might want to get a good one from a store other then Sprint. Just a suggestion I have seen a ton of issue's related to the stock cable.

Ok as long as it is better than the stock one LOL
My phone kept looping on the loading screen, so i pulled the battery and got in CWM. When i did a data wide so i can restore from a saved file the phone got stuck on wiping.
So i pulled the battery and the phone kept on looping the samsung logo and would not go back to CWM, got inside ODIN and tried the stock one click EL29 ODIN method, everything flashes but gets stuck on data.bin. i re-start the process to only be stuck in the same data.bin step. the ODIN one click pro does not stop responding it just gets stuck.
I tried the ODIN method where i load the stock none rooted tar file in pda mode, this method completely passes but when it restarts it goes back to loop mode.
I tried getting into recovery mode but it loops also (Holding Volume up and power)
I am currently trying a different ODIN oneclick TAR file, maybe this will work, i will update when it finishes.
I do not know what to do next, i have flashed all individual files in ODIN also.

You were on a ics ROM ?
Used a ics kernel to wipe data ?
Were using ROM manager?
Using touch cwm ?
Didn't read OP for the ROM either ?
Almost all ics roms will tell you not to use a ics kernel with cwm that is the cause of the bricks ...
If you can answer yes to any of the above you didn't read enough... There are a dozen threads about bricking phones on here that would have saved your phone....good luck at sprint getting it replaced

ODIN OneClick is just serving as the messenger to tell you your /data partition is corrupted. You could have used CWM, ODIN, ODIN OneClick, etc. They would all tell you the same thing. The EMMC memory is actually damaged, it isn't just a partition data problem.
It is unfortunate to have the issue with ICS-based kernels and custom recovery, but that is why all the threads stress using GB-based kernels with custom recovery to do your flashing.
Lesson learned. At least you work for Sprint and can probably get things resolved with less hassle.
Yeah lesson learned. I just did the repair ticket on it and will have one on tuesday.
When the new one comes i will go straight to ICS build 31, and not even mess with anything else.

It isn't a format issue.
The hardware emmc memory is damaged.
JTAG bitblasting would have overwrote everything if it was fixable. That is failing in this case.
So basically you are asking why we can't reformat a hard drive that crashed and make it work.
You are doing what's right. I had to flash the one click Odin 3 times to get out of a boot loop after trying to restore a GB ROM MD5 from a ICS kernel. Learned the hard way. But if you can get to DL mode, you can usually fix it. After the third time i was able to get into standard Android recovery and do a factory data reset. Then flashed the rom again and it booted right up. I was lucky though. Hope it works out.

I was using this rom since it came out and haven't had 1 problem. after just using it normally it froze. did a battery pull and tried to reboot but was stuck on logo with the cm9 animation. so i went to recovery mode i had an error. i tried doing a format and froze. so i did another battery pull and now my phone wont boot into recovery or download mode. all i get is a blue led light. any ideas?

I have a problem, that I cannot find nor figure out the solution, I hope there is someone here that can help. I have used and have flashed with Odin many many times and have never had a problem.
Problem:
I am running a BeastMod 5.0, and before that I was running a ICS ROM...can't remember which one. I wanted to make sure I had everything ready for when the Official ICS dropped. Went to flash the stock which is posted here, got all the way (in Odin) to the Modem cache.img.ext4 part and that is where it hangs. I actually left it overnight just to make sure, and was still stuck on that part of the flash. It keeps rebooting to the Kies download page and only way to fix is to Odin Flash clockwork recovery. I have tried the super wipe, cache wipe, and every other tool I can find, but it still always get stuck at the part listed above.
Hopefully someone else has had the same problem and been able to fix. All help is greatly appreciated.

Try reflashing the recovery. Once in recovery, reflash the ROM. That is what I had to do. Hope it helps. Also, make sure and upload the ROM to your SD Card...the superwipe doesn't touch the SD Card.

If I could get to CWR I'd be okay.

That's one of the reasons flashing back to stock can be hard. Try flashing the stock image that is injected with a custom recovery (cwm I believe) found in the developers section.
Wiping during this operation is crucial so as not to get stuck in a boot loop

I flashed the stock rom without auto reboot and then pulled the battery.
Then, I flashed CWR without auto reboot and pulled the battery again.
After that, I could get into CWR so I flashed cm10 and a different google apps package than last time.
I don't have any cm10 bugs now. It would crash acore alot and stock apps like messaging wouldn't work.
Thanks for the help everyone, I'm set now.

alrighty then. I have been playing with my phone for about 2 hours now trying to figure out how to get rid of CM10 so I can flash a new ROM. I tried re-rooting (not advised, had a small stroke while figuring out if I bricked or soft bricked) I just did a system wipe, also ill advised, it warned me that I had no OS (thats why we make nandroids like good lil boys and girls.)
For the love of Jeebus someone please tell me how to get CM10 off of my phone so I can flash a new ROM. can I un-root and re-root and start from scratch that way? is that proper? is there an easier way? Why am I asking all these questions?! (because no matter what, I will always be a NooB -.-')
I appreciate any insight you guys can give me, thanks in advance!

Fairly simple just download another non cm10 ROM as you did to install cm10 in the first place. If you are unsure of what to do read the instructions in the OP of the ROM you want.

I appreciate the reply, im hesitant to flash over cm10 though. I seem to remember always having to reflash back to stock (root) before flashinga new ROM, I never encountered any problems when doing so.

Just wipe data, cache and dalvik then flash new rom. No reason whatsoever to flash another stock rom to flash the one you want
I like to break stuff!

Idk who told you you needed to go back to stocm b4 flashing another rom but they were wrong. I've been flashing roms for a few years on 7 different phones and 5 tablets and never once went back to stock before changing roms

its a habit from the Vibrant. flashing back to stock prevented the possibility of "ghost files." it just kind of ensured everything rolled along smoothly. The reality is that flashing over CM10 is looking like my only option without having to break out good Ol' Command Prompt lol. I appreciate your help guys.!

Just wipe in recovery to get rid of the last roms data and files. You could always odin to stock if you really wanted to but its just extra steps that aren't needed

got stuck n a boot loop a dozen times, finally said to hell with it and found a stock .tar.MD5 and Odin'd this pig. Again, I appreciate y'alls' help.
Don't forget to nandriod before flashing. It will help you when you need it most.
What recovery were you using? I have used twrp with no problems
