i am so stoked for this
Soon from now... but waaaaaayy too late.
I wouldn't say it's "too late" - before Mango, it was fairly easy to unlock phones.
What puzzles me is the purpose of this unlock though. It won't allow interop stuff which means that neither file explorers nor registry editors nor system tweaks will work.
So the only real use for it is piracy. Well, OK, I can imagine a dev that wants to do regular stuff with allowed API calls only and doesn't have 99 bucks, but hey, this is too much fuss over nothing.
lol, normal users pirate the app themselves and they wont pay 10 dollar for that. Devs can unlock their phones themselves, so they wont need the chevron unlock neither.
Way tooooooo slow Chevron-Team. No one is going to pay for developer unlock. Better offer some hidden interop-unlock, then you might have some chance
Well, I think this is a good move, thanks to heathcliff we can interop-unlock in mango after being unlocked. Also this benefits the users that buy 2nd gen devices (Titan, Radar) wich come with mango.

It's not easy to do on Mango, and not even possible on some devices. In new markets like Russia phones initially came with Mango and you can't even flash older ROMs on them without gold card. HSPL will brick them.

So would touchexperience work on the new mango cheveron?

Not really. If you don't want to be a developer but want to run homebrew apps and don't want to roll back your phone to go through all the effort to unlock it then this will be perfect for you.

Had to pay 125$, yay for Norwegian taxes.
Looking forward to Chevron though.
Thanks, excellent work!
Well that kinda sucks, all I wanted it for was touch experience.
I would think that once the unlock is applied a way will be found to InterOp unlock or even Full unlock. If you are saavy enough you can flash custom roms for those capabilities. I could probably do that also but I hate the idea of starting from square one and don't have that much free time on my hands. So this will do for now, better than nothing.

Seems to haven't been posted before. According to this article on wmpoweruser.com the chevron team is planning to release their official unlocking tool for 9$. I consider this very good news.
Reasonable price.
Quite reasonable.
I'm surprised that anyone would have expected it to be more.
The only thing that surprises me is that Microsoft didn't come up with this option in the first place. It seems to me that it could only lead to more developers ultimately signing up for a full license, to gain access to the marketplace.

I for one expected it to be somewhere between 10 and 20 dollars. So I'm quite surprised. I was even willing to spend up to 50$, which still seems reasonable for me as a developer who doesn't want (or doesn't have the possibility) to publish his apps on the marketplace in a closer future. So spending 99$ every single year just to be able to use my apps on my very own device is way less reasonable then spending 50$ once for a lifetime.
I share your surprise though, but I find it very cool from Microsoft that they approved that.

Yep, sometimes they just need a little nudge to do the right thing . And I really do see this as a big win for them (both in potential new developers, and in PR).
Excellent news, for us and Microsoft. Shows that they are listening! For that price theres no real point looking for unofficial unlocks. Wonder tho what restrictions/conditions there will be?

it is the same as a dev unlock, but doesn't allow for app submission. I don't know about the max number of sideloaded apps, but that can usually be removed.

Based on what we've been told, there are no restrictions or conditions. This unlock will behave exactly like an official dev unlocked phone. It will not, however, give you a dev account with Microsoft, so (as munkeyphyst pointed out) you won't be able to submit apps to the marketplace.
...do I understand correctly:
- all it is doing is to unlock WP7 NoDo?
- it has nothing to do with the FileManager which was/is also in developement?
- if I unlock and install Mango Beta, do I have to reset to NoDo to update the final version of Mango in the fall?
It's no different than what we had before.
Once Microsoft patches the OS the unlock tool will become useless until they update it after finding another way to unlock it.
All Microsoft is doing is allowing them to release they tool they already had, for a rather hefty price (not really reasonable when you can root an Android Phone for free, or Jailbreak an iPhone for free). It still comes with all the same caveats (i.e. Microsoft will not allow security exploits to sit there just cause this tool exists, they will break the tool on virtually every update and ofc there's always the risk an update can lock your phone back).

- yes, it is unlocking NODO and every future update, just like an official developer unlock
- nothing, technically, to do with file manager. But s developer unlocked phone is the first steps toward further unlocking/hacking
- if you install the mango beta, you will have to restore to nodo or earlier to get back in the official update que. This has been covered a bazillion times all over the WP7 forums. You can use the backup created by Zune or flash an earlier ROM

Where are you getting this from? Everything that I have read suggest that this, like the official developer unlock, will carry over regardless of software updates. That is half the point.
It obviously isn't the same tool they used before because that tool has not worked since NoDo came out.

Well it is an offical and safe way to unlock your phone, and 9$ is hardly a heftly price to pay to keep your warrenty and update without having to wait for another exploit. I doubt it's really done by using an exploit, rather just another dev unluck and they're working with MS so it prolly isn't going to break that easily.
But I do wish they would let us have more access, e.g. interop/registry, I'd still be stuck with the silly caller id bug if I hadn't fixed it myself. Even tried contacting HTC support and they were pretty damn useless.

Coming Tuesday.. I am throwing Mango release party this weekend.
I think it sux. After almost a year they manage to implant a custom ringtones, and fail (no custom ringtones for alerts). Guess they need to hire another one for that.
They change volume bar with numbers (wee what a change), but still no separate volume for phone and device.
But I must say, its good for facebook junkies.

Wait a minute, you're saying that a whole operating system sucks because of two honestly very minor issues?
Chainfire posted a long writeup of what the future holds for root on Android phones including Lollipop. It's an interesting read.
"As stated above, it seems for now that modifications to the kernel package are required to have root, we cannot attain it with only modifications to the system partition.
Combine that with a locked bootloader (and optionally dm-verity) and a device becomes nigh unrootable - exactly as intended by the security guys.
Exploit-based roots are already harder to do thanks to SELinux, and now because of the kernel requirements for persistent root, these exploits will need to be run at every boot. Exploits that make the system unstable (as many do) are thus out as well.
It is now thus more important than ever to buy unlocked devices if you want root."
Edit: Tikerz beat me to it. His post is here. Mods delete if you want.
No real surprise to me. It was only a matter of time before it got locked down to the point of no easy exploit. I'm surprised it took this long, actually.

man locking bootloaders is one thing.. but root??!?
its not even a poormans route anymore to get a carrier phone over a factory one, you need to choose between functionality or reception..
i wonder if Xposed is responsible for crazy bootloader security moving over to root.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Free mobile app
The lack of root in the foreseeable future really ruined my excitement for this phone I have gotten so used to all the nice features of root (in addition to custom ROMs) like Ti Backup, AdAway, customization, etc. that I do not want to fork out the money for a phone that doesn't feel truly mine.
That said, I'm confident the devs will find a solution. Just like every iPhone has been jailbroken there will be root for the Note 4!
There is a root for the note 4.....just not ours ...as intended...if we want root we bought the wrong device...I got it the day before it came out in the mail and was excited I wasn't aware that it was going to be so neglected...I was at least hoping for a safestrap like the note 3 I had that I don't anymore because it shattered and they gave me this as a replacement...now I can't get root...way too sleezy...they got me!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Free mobile app
I certainly don't see it as 'sleezy', as the devices were always known to be locked. It isnt like AT&T were endorsing root or safe strap in the first place... Or secretly locked it at the last minute without telling anyone.
But opinions on morality aside, it is disappointing that root may take a while. Though I'm still optimistic that it will happen eventually.

Yeah, if you can afford it, for the rest of us though, it sounds like we'll be out of luck.
Maybe we need to start looking at hardware hacks, like when chipping a console?
Maybe an insecure boot.img can root this phone.
Focus on the boot loader. If it gets unlocked we will be fine with root.

nice having posts like this just right up front.... I come to xda for the modding and mainly rooting of my phones.... att releases a totally locked down note 4 and already people are speaking out about its probably not going to get an unlock like the s5... I remember a time where unlocking the bootloader and gaining root was a fun thing to do for those of us who like to tinker. I remember when devs made awesome ROMs for fun (and donations), back before Cyanogen became mainstream. Now to think we have to pay, especially something like $75 to gain full access to our own device... It is sad. But hey, for $20 I'll do it, but no way am I spending $75 unless I get a whole lot of ROM choices.

Gaining root or unlocking bootloader was much easier before, less number of devices to make rom for, etc. Now is completely opposite. Unlocking bootlader requires a lot of knowledge now and it's understandable that someone wish to monetize it. Cannot find
I would blame vendors or in this case carriers for locking our own devices. But I also understand why. IMO, solution is what Moto and some others do, offer official unlock with losing warranty. Would be nice to keep warranty but nothing is perfect.

Has anybody had this done? It is tempting if they can actually do it!
Its real. My note is unlocked and rooted.
There's warning lights flashing with this one...
As much as I like (and miss) a rooted device, I would definitely err on the side of caution with this one especially if you use your phone for sensitive and personal things. Even then, with 3 mics and all those cameras the chance of spying is great! Definitely curious if this is real to have someone use network tools to see if indeed the modded devices are leaking things they shouldn't.

Its not some random person, it actually Samsung token. Device is completely wiped during process to prevent gathering data. Nothing nefarious about it. Been unlocked and rooted for awhile as is a ton of others. A couple reputable developers are involved. But like previous post to each their own.

Had my AT&T Phone unlocked, Paid the $150, and since I did the old payment method (wire transfer) Had to wait a few days.
Fully charges, and You can flash TWRP/Root and U/U1 Roms without fear of losing Unlock. The only downside is the Bootloader being unlocked Trips Knox which disables some things like Secure Storage App and Samsung Pay and I believe Samsung Pass. I didn't use those and I have Samsung Pay on my watch which still works.
Also, the process will factory reset your phone like any bootloader unlock procedure.

to add some context, I now have usa source and do the unlocking myself directly (im in the usa) so no china source is involved in this process any longer.
but of course if you or anyone else has their reservations then its understandable. I wouldnt expect anyone to go through with something they are 100% on, i wouldnt either lol.
after all, my goal isnt to get paid its to offer a legit way to unlock the bl on devices that otherwise cant and of course to drive development on xda which im sure u can see theres more stuff being posted for usa models since this has become possible from twrp to mods to roms etc.

to add some context, I now have usa source and do the unlocking myself directly (im in the usa) so no china source is involved in this process any longer.
but of course if you or anyone else has their reservations then its understandable. I wouldnt expect anyone to go through with something they are 100% on, i wouldnt either lol.

Thats awesome, I remember during my unlock waiting on the source over in China so you being able to directly do it yourself is a time saver and probably a lot easier
