[Q] Some noobie Wildfire questions - Wildfire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have just bought a second hand Wildfire and loving it but I need some questions answering.
1. What is S-off and what are its advantages?
2. What version of z4root will root this device as it says it is compatible but 1.30 just closes on aquiring root shell?
Don't be scared to be technical as I am computer literate and will understand. Thanks in advance.

go here The Complete Wildfire Index and you will find all the answers, and you dont need z4root ;]

Ahh, thank you sir.
Edit: unfortunately I don't have pc access yet as I am on holiday. so about this z4root method?

it doesnt work,if your hboot is 0.8.. you can only root it if dont want s-off, but if its 1.0.. you have to s-off in order to root, i dont thing theres an app than can root the wildfire(havent tests one myself) but you can search, basically you need pc ;]

I see. Doing the pc method will I have to downgrade my hboot to 0.8 if it is higher?

Hi guys and girls,
Can somebody please explain in depth how i can get temporary root on my HTC Wildfire with hboot 1.01.0001, s-on and android 2.2.1.? I tried superoneclick v1.91 and gingerbreak v1.2 but with no luck. That is better called shell root. Use older version of superoneclick (i think v 1.7).
U can access root from adb only. And root only apps will not work.

[Q] HTC Wildfire S - Marvel - Shipped as S-off

Hi to all !
Three weeks ago I got my HTC Wildfire S and it was shipped as S-off.
This is what I get if I access HBOOT mode:
MARVEL PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-0.90.0000
MICROP-0451
RADIO-7.46.35.08
Apr 8 2011, 17:45:10
I tried: Gingerbreak 1.20, SuperOneClick v2.0, Z4Root, Unrevoked 3.32 and all without succes to root my phone.
Is there any other way to do this ?
Can I flash Wildfire S with one custom ROM and then try to get root ?
I read about that this official ROM with Gingerbread 2.3.3 still have kind of NAND security.
Is it possible even if the phone is S-Off ?
Can I downgrade to one other, lower version then 2.3.3 of Android and get the root and then again come back to higher version of Android but then with root access, and if yes could someone explain how to do this please ?
Are the ROM's from old Wildfire (Buzz) compatible with Wildfire S (Marvel) and what is the risk to test them and still not to brick my phone ?
Thanks in advance to all !
Since your phone is S-OFF, you could try flashing the official ROM :http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Marvel
On that ROM, Gingerbreak is guaranteed to work (I've done it twice already).
Interesting ,
Shipped as S-Off by mistake ?!?
Some devices are shipped S-off.
This thread is ready to be moved to the General section
O.K.
But is there any chance that later, after update, it will not work anymore as it should work or something like that ?
And how can I preserve (BackUp) this original ROM from this device without root access and before flashing, because if something go wrong then I can restore the original ROM ...?
Greetz !
And to Mods I owe an apologie for posting in wrong section, sorry.
Rooted
I did what LeeCHeSSS has me suggested and now is my Wildfire S rooted and with SuperUser. I didn't use custom recovery.
Thanks LeeCHeSSS !
Dankjewel !
Mine also came with S-off. Did anyone rooted this device? Is there any kind of tutorial for this? I am doing this for the first time in my life..
Look in development section.

I found it! I was looking at the wrong thread! I will try the tutorial I found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195275.
Just did it and it works! Everything is OK! I have root . Thanks and special thanks to Heritz !
Downgrade to older stock ROM
All what you have to do is to download official ROM as LeeCHeSSS has explained up :
"Since your phone is S-OFF, you could try flashing the official ROM :http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?ca...d&model=Marvel
On that ROM, Gingerbreak is guaranteed to work (I've done it twice already). "
After that you have to download Gingerbreak 1.20 and execute it and after that your device will be rooted.
You don't need custom recovery.
Cheers !
Or just flash a custom rom which is pre rooted.

yep .. desire s appears on video but as you can read in the memo associated in the same youtube page it works even on "HTC Desire, HTC Desire S, HTC Wildfire, HTC Aria, HTC Incredible S, HTC Droid Incredible 2, HTC Thunderbolt, HTC Evo 4G, HTC View, HTV Flyer, HTC Sensation, HTC Evo 3D and the myTouch 4G" (the memo contains also text of all procedure ..
I think is interesting for the bad_boys question, first is a all-in-one procedure to SOFF, Recovery acquisition and Root, after becouse to root a Desire already on GB require a more complicate procedure respect a froyo based one.
Revolutionary does not root your phone a jmclue said. It uses temp root (I believe) to gain s-off and flash a custom recovery.
The easiest way to obtain root after using revolutionary is to flash an already rooted custom rom.
If you want to root your current rom I think there is a zip file you can flash to do this.
I personally rooted my desire and flashed recovery using an older version of unrevoked (I think it was 3.21). I s-off'ed using alpharev some months later. It is not necessary to be s-off to flash custom roms. If you can get it to work I personally think it is easier to use unrevoked as it is a one click solution. Read all the guides before attempting this however.

I also used unrevoked 3.21 .. but I'm not sure that it works on 2.3.3 (as - it seems - Revolutionary does) .. naturally another way is to come back on froyo.
Yes revolutionary is for 0.93.0001 & 1.02.0001 hboots and is very very simple and straight foward to use

S-off has nothing to do with android version on your phone or with root. Everything depends on your hboot version.
Revolutionary does the job with 0.93 and 1.02 hboot, for older versions of hboots Alpharev Reflash Utility should be used.
The problem with Unrevoked is that it cannot bypass never hboots to flash superuser to system.

imo jmcclue has given the right advice and dont do anything else. You can find detailed instructions in the guide he has referred to but the overall picture is like this:-
- Use revolutionary from revolutionary.io to get SOFF. As part of this process you will also get a custom recovery.
- Flash root package from revolutionary.io if you want to get root on current rom else choose a custom rom and flash from recovery.
Thats all

Have a look at this guide which will help you to install Android 4.0.4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1955842
these guides might help to root your phone, but not sure that rooting will remove sim-lock.

Please follow the above guides. I believe they are the simplest guides there is on rooting wildfire, and do read and understand everything before attempting to root.
If you have a question, please first try searching it in the wildfire forums, you are likely to find your answers that way.
Cheers
P.S. - wait, if you are not rooted, how do you have clockworkmod? CWM isn't an application.

I said I had clockworkmod, I didn't say it worked! and it doesn't without it being rooted.
So before I update I want to backup all the original ROM.
Also if I update will this unlock the device to any network as I have had other windows phones that did?
I just don't want to brick it!!!!
Cheers

okay,I will try to be clear as possible, follow the given guide to root your phone, I used that guide to root mine, and was successful at the first try. so, if you follow that guide word to word, there should be no problems. you'll be rooted within 10 minutes.
while rooting you'll have to reset your phone,so contacts and mssgs will be lost. also keep a backup of your SDcard.
this process will also install clockworkmod recovery, so after rooting you'll be able to backup your current ROM using CWM. after that you can flash any ROM you like.
as for simlock I'm not quite sure rooting will simunlock your phone. there is a thread about this,so please read that.
I hope this answers all your questions, if not, at least some. good luck..!
I will post the link to the guide again.
