WP Voice Texting Edits Profanity!!! - Windows Phone 7 General

This is quite funny to me but I imagine it may upset the foul mouth anti censorship type of individual. I was, in fun, sending a text by voice to a friend and spoke the words piece of ----; the phone actually changed it to "pos". I experimented some more and it was pretty entertaining getting bleeped by my phone. This isn't just my phone is it?

Google Voice - So bad it's funny.

I decided to try Google Voice with my EVO since I am running an AOSP rom. The "speech-to-text" service is so pathetically bad, it is worth a snicker.
I can only assume they are using some sort of algorithm from 1972. The text is so garbled and unintelligible that I honestly cannot even begin to guess at what the user is trying to say. You would think that Google would attempt to at least guess at actual English words. Instead the typical message reads:
"ick blarney scopin on my biscuit it flat bobby earnest blackto."
Seriously Google? The Sprint Voice-to-Text is pretty close to flawless. This is beyond useless. If anyone knows a way to fix this, please let me know
yeah, my text voice mails are goofy too, maybe 20% accuracy, haven't tried the sprint to compare though, I like free
You think THAT'S bad... haha.. I had a friend butt dial me once... I saved the GV transcript. I've always found GV to be way worse than Sprint's transcription but this one takes the cake...

+1 generally it's only my mom or dad calling me to leave messages (everyone else I talk to texts). Certain words are missed or dual words get mixed up: Syllables become Sill Ables (not literally, just giving an idea) but I have no problem with it.
Of course that's only to get the gist of a message, like to see if it is important or not. Maybe you should listen to your message. At the very least mark it as unhelpful. Google can't improve the algorithm if they don't know it's not working. You may have to log on to your Google voice account on a computer to mark it, I'm not positive as I don't have any messages to test right now.

I agree. It's not perfect, but it's usable.
I see Sprint's voice to text as better...but still not 100%... but I'm not willing to pay the $1.99 / month for it.
With all that said, it's not hard to just click the voicemail and take the 20 seconds to listen to it.
i tried it a few times and rather just listen to messages. Its soo wacked out most of the time I can do without.
My friend called me from his Jeep once and it picked up the rumbling of the engine revving and the whole message just said "good good good good good" over and over again.
My google voice is pretty accurate. It only has issues if someone calls to give me a confirmation number or any other number. You have to take into account the people who call you. Not everyone has a clear voice.
Call yourself and leave yourself a VM. It will be much better.
Yeah, mine has been pretty terrible, too. Of course, MOST people stumble in speech and say, "uh... um... uh... like..." And that really kills the whole transcription.
Mine's pretty bad too, but it's good enough that I can usually figure out what the person actually said. Also, the transcriptions are usually pretty funny, so I don't mind that much.

Yeah, it does get pretty funny sometimes with what odd things the system will come up with as a translation. Then you go and actually listen to the message and you're thinking, "What... how did it think they said that!"

Speech to Text

I unfortunately own the dreaded bugged Dell Venue Pro. On the plus side though, I have gotten to experience the amazing WinMo7 OS. I love it. I will stick with it when I move on to the next phone and just avoid the con-artists known as Dell.
With that said, one of the very few things that has let me down with WinMo7 and the Mango update, is the speech to text feature. I find it ridiculously inaccurate. I would say it works at about a 5% success rate and is so far off most of the time it is comical.
I was curious if everyone else is having great success with this feature or if it is just me (could be something with my voice or even could just be another bug with the Venue Pro Microphone). Would like to hear how the feature is working for everyone else. Thanks.
English is not my native langauge but it get most of my speech correct. So I have no problem with it.

First of all, as a sidenote, it's Windows Phone, not Windows Mobile. Anyways, text to speech worked pretty well the few times I used it. I noticed that the more clear I speak, the better it recognizes what I say. So no dialects, no mumbling.. I barely use it since I couldn't figure out how to use punctuation so it's kinda useless for me.
i was very excited about this at first, until I ran into the same problem. i keep using it occasionally, hoping it will get it right this time... but anything over 2 or 3 words and it always messes something up. i'm even sure to speak slowly and clearly. all it needs to do is mess one word up and its pointless. if i have to go in and correct something, that ends up taking longer than had i just typed in the first place.
Don't u mean windows phone. Also the dell venue pro is great with mango update, but that doesn't erase their past. Speech to text works well enough for me. Not sure what ur doing wrong but I don't have the big problems u state

Yeah... Im not sure what the deal is. I don't have a lisp or anything like that .
Does anyone know if the core of the speech to text is shared with the music recognition feature also? Because that thing is buggy as hell to. For a while I would try to use it on songs and it would come back empty. I was starting to think that they just didnt have those songs in their library. But, then when a song was unrecognized, I would switch over to Shazam. Shazam would indicate what the song was, and if I clicked the Zune icon with in the app, it would take me right to the song in the Zune marketplace, so obviously the problem wasnt that they didn't 'carry' that song.
Other than when I have to use the phone to have it 'listen' and recognize what is being played or said, the OS is AMAZING.
In all honesty, I find the clearer and more diss-tinkt-lee I speak, the less it picks up.
It'll be something like this:
Me: Text (wife)
Phone: texting (wife)
Me: Want, to, get, pizza, tonight?
Phone: Went you bet pizza to knight. You can say send or start over.
Me: Start over.
Me: Wanna get pizzatonight
Phone: Wanna get pizza tonight
I kid you not, it picks up all the "gonnas" and what not. However for things longer than two sentences, it's a crap shoot.
-edit-
My guess is they purposely coded it to pick up more natural sounding speech patterns.
My favorite is when it takes everyday words and censors them because it thinks you drop so 4 letter bombs.
Example:
To Wife: You looked like a million dollars tonight.
What she gets: You looked like a *#&$&#@! tonight.
Goes over real well...
Works for me okay! I like it when its reading texts with "x's" at the end it reads "kisses" its so funny

I'll have to try this.. I wonder if it's true. I was getting frustrated, it seemed like the more deliberate I was the more it ****ed with me.
and I don't get you guys who are saying 'it works good enough'. it either works or doesn't, no? if it doesn't say what you want then it's useless.
I don't bother with speech to text, but what I miss from the old WM 6.5 was MS Voice Command. You can ask "what time is it?"; "what call did I missed?"; "what appointment do I have?", etc.. It would event alert my upcoming appointment by voice! I don't get why MS scraped that and gave us this handicapped voice thing. Why let Apple get all the credit for siri when Voice Command was able do 80% of that 4 years ago?
Don't give Siri too much credit, it was down for hours today....anywho, mine is 90% accurate...sometimes it amazes me that it picked up what I said, but occasionally it will translate some crazy stuff lol.

my last two messages contained 'soon though i'm a' which was turned into 'sonoma'. SERIOUS?
and then 'eleven' it interpreted as 'lesson'. wrong amount of syllables, not even close.

"soon though I'm a", what was the rest of your sentence? If it was something like "I'm a be at John's house", then that might be your problem. I wouldn't think that urban slang is coded in, making it think you meant something else.
Essentially, Tellme has gotten pretty good for American/British & Aussie accents.
I'm Chinese & my voice is of a higher pitch so Tellme only got it right 50% & assuming the Auto-gain on the Trophy or my Bluetooth headset doesnt attenuate my voice too much.
A Kiwi I know also have the same problem but you know what? It's a lot better now compared to a year ago & the key is to speak naturally.
It's actually working amazingly well for me which is surprising since I have an Australian accent. I find it strange that it's not working too well for you.
Eg, I said 'I'll meet you at the park in 30 minutes but I'll also be stopping for lunch on the way' and it came out as 'I'll meet you at the park in 30 minutes but I'll also be stopping for lunch on my way'. I actually said this quickly (normal conversation speed), and it came out almost perfect. Even with the error (if you could even call it that) the sentence still made perfect sense..
I've found that the slower and clearer i speak the worse it is.
If i just speak normaly to it, it gets it pretty good.
i wonder if this is the issue for me?
are the phone sold with an accent filter?
I'm an Aussie but i live in the UK and i bought my mobile through O2. is there a way to tell the phone to "listen" for an Aussie accent?
I don't think we need something like Siri on WP7, it's a gimmick imo.

it's marketed as a gimmick but there's no doubt its a useful feature. its capabilities are way beyond Tellme where you have to start off with 1 of only 4 keywords to start an action. i'll give it another few years though until anyone puts out a voice system that is truly useful and accurate.
i will give siri extra credit though.. my brother was messing around with it, and even when he gave commands it wouldn't recognize, it would exactly repeat what he said no matter how bizarre or quick he would talk. i'd imagine it must work well for voice to text.

OCD and the GN... 3 weeks on...

Ok... Let me just throw it out there... Your GN is not "Perfect". It is not "Flawless". It's a unique piece of hardware that came off a mass production line. It is not identical to any other GN if you spend enough time examining it
In all fairness, I got my GN 3 weeks ago on Nov 25th. I moaned about a light (barely noticeable) horizontal band across the screen and only noticeable on very low light when scrolling.
3 week ons... I'm at peace. More and more threads (about the screen, dust particles, build quality etc) appear every day that confirm, the GN is not a hand made and individually scrutinized piece of swiss machinery. Nope. It was not manufactured in a clean room in the Jet propulsion Lab by NASA engineers in funny suits. It's a phone. Wait wait... don't go yet. I'm nearly done. The point is... After a week or so of bemoaning that it was perfect, I finally just started to use it, and...ENJOY it. Now after 3 weeks use, I could not be happier with it. Battery seems to have improved as time went on (or perhaps Im not starting at the screen so much anymore!) and I now treat the phone like a phone. A piece of expendable tech that I'll probably use for 12-18months.
Should it be 100% flawless? Perfect? Clean room hand built? for 700dollars? No. That money pays for the research and the technology in the phone. It doesn't stretch so far to include sapphire crystal display or hand assembly and post packing scrutiny by an OCD swiss guy with a loupe.
God damn it people, don't let a speck of dust, or a some slight variation in colour bands on the screen ruin your experience of a super device. If its flawed like a line of dead pixels, yes, return it, but if your really just unhappy because its not flawless, well don't be.. because nobodies GN is flawless. Look at it long enough and you'll find something you can pick at... Or you could jsut use the phone and marvel in its awesomeness and stop looking for a bit of dust you can only see when you get into the closet at night with a loupe, night vision googles, and an infrared lamp. Enjoy it
exactly why i'm just going to use the phone and not "look" for issues.

If you have nothing to contribute, well you know..
There are way too many threads about nitpicking at every single little detail. I'm not saying the phones don't have issues, but the OP is right. There are way too many threads about such minor details where people expect the phone to be some amazing device as if God himself had created it. It's not. It's a phone.
I think part of the problem is a lot of people are buying it off contract and thus feel that since they are paying so much the phone should be devoid of any and all slight defects.

It's not just that people are buying it off contract. This happens with pretty much every phone. Every time a phone is released there are always threads where people say things like "What problems should I look for?" My thing is, if you have to seek out the "problems" then they aren't problems. And only on forums like xda do people obsess over the most minor "defects". The average consumer doesn't return a phone 3 or 4 times because if they go into a pitch black room and turn the brightness down all the way and then look at an all black screen they see some sort of imperfection. This is the type of unreasonable expectation of pure perfection that you will only find in these online communities. People are flat out ridiculous in how they overreact to the slightest "issue" they perceive themselves to have on their devices. To the average person they can use the exact same phone with the exact same "issue" and not have a single problem.

I agree with the OP. We should all be so lucky that the biggest problem we have is the slight imperfections on the screen. I've noticed the banding (streaks) on the display a few times already but only because it's been discussed ad nauseum. Do I like it? Not really. Do I need to obsess over it and return 3 different units for the same issue only to realize, that's just the way it is. It's not perfect but it's also not worth the amount of complaining that's been going on here. 36 hours in and I am pretty well pleased with it! The screen is gorgeous!
BUT, if Samsung is reading this, my message is this: What's your problem?!? Why isn't this thing perfect?!? I paid too much! I want signal from inside of a lead box! Work harder!

Untrue. I just told it to do a barrel roll.
Although, I agree, there are far fewer easter eggs than siri. Judging from what I've seen people use Siri for, easter eggs are probably like half the reason to have it...
At least for me, GN is less about the voice stuff. I'd said back then "Siri is stupid. Android has had voice actions for FOREVER and I'd feel stupid having a conversation with my phone." And I still feel that way, I don't even use regular voice actions or voice typing. Call me old fashioned, but talking into my phone is the LAST thing I'd want to do with it.
For me, its more about the cards and the more modern/googley looking search UI. Using it the past couple weeks on my tablet, GN figured out where I worked without me saying a word and now it pops up a little notification essentially saying "Hey, its gonna take you 1:05 to get to work this morning, you should catch the 8:45 bus".
I'm sure that's a fairly mundane example, but essentially it functions like a next generation location based search that also responds and reacts to you (your searches etc.). Bus stop near you? You've got the times right there. Is it lunch time? Here's a list of restaurants nearby. Is your team playing? Here's the score.
Haha maybe exaggerated. There's one... Just compared to sir I.

If you need a warning label to avoid your own stupidity, you deserve what you get when you don't pay attention. Usually a darwin award. "Don't use in shower" - on hair dryer "caution hot" - on coffee "may be cold" - on bag of ice "do not ingest" - on bleach and numerous other household chemicals. Seriously if you need someone to dictate common sense to you, which apparently there's been enough morons in the world to require these labels, I'm really surprised there's not millions of dead idiots who forgot to breathe. Sometimes I look at warning labels and think "Self, are there really this many stupid people in the world?" "Self, apparently there are! We should remove all warning labels and it will lessen the worlds woes by weeding out those who most certainly can't offer anything to society besides another burden for everyone else to carry through life."

The funniest label I seen was on this plastic wrap box. It read "you can choke off this item.... handle with care". So, I guess experimenting marry couples can't have any fun lol

I know they do, sort of. Their insurance company loses the money in the end under their liability policy. Honestly you shouldn't be able to file a lawsuit for your own stupidity unless you want to sue yourself. The company didn't make you do something stupid, that was your own moronic self that tried to blow dry your hair while showering, not only are you stupid for thinking "hey electric hair dryer + running water = win" but you're in the shower FFS, your hair is having water run all over it, how the hell did you expect it to dry and the worst part is the morons on the jury who actually agreed with the idiots idiocity and awarded them anything besides a swift smack upside the head. :sly:

Very off topic but HBO had a documentary about that coffee spill, I used to think that she just wanted money as well but after watching that show I learned that the employee did not have the lid on tight and it did spill causing some very nasty burns, like hot lava burns. The lady just wanted them to pay her hospital bill and old McDonald's said they would giver her a few pennies for her troubles so she had to sue.
End of off Topic rant, please continue. :silly:
I just flashed this and my house caught fire. What should I do now?

Go to your neighbors house and watch it burn.
Sprint been really good to us lately, maybe we'll get a release in late August or early September.
Off topic : Do you anyone know when Sprint's buyout is suppose to be completed or was it interrupted by Dish Network again.

If I'm thinking of the same lady, she put the coffee between her legs BC she didn't have cup holders....I guess she should have sued the car company as well. If you put HOT coffee between your legs, well your not very bright and you shouldn't be shocked when you get burnt.
