Hi,
I don't know if this is a stupid question, but ill ask it anyway.
I just reflashed my desire hboot with alphaspl-cm7r2, and I didn't wipe all and restore from nandroid and didn't reflash the rom either.
My phone restarted and everything works as normal. I now even have 159MB available in the internal storage. All apps, everything is just rosy, no problems.
Is this fine? Because I read that you have to restore or reflash the rom. Will there be any problems later?
Regards,
Mihir

What ROM are you using? I think to be safe you should wipe and restore from nandroid.

I am using CM7.1 stable
If it works it works, but you shouldve nandroid restored once flashing the hboot really.
I guess I should have wiped-all and restored after hboot flash.
I'll leave it as-is for now, hopefully nothing should happen.
Was just wondering if any one else went ahead without restore and had problems.
Thanks guys for the replies

Hi guys,
Please be gentle, I've just come across from the iPhone 4
I have a desire HD which I have rooted and have installed revolution HD ROM. I would like to try LEEDROID'S ROM, my question is how I can simply change ROMS whilst retaining my apps and data?
I am sure there is an easy way around this (only if you know how?)
I am guessing there is a backing up app which you are using?
Your help is much appreciated
Thank you
p.s. Just on this occasion I would like to perform a clean install and retain data/apps on any later rom swaps, can i just go ahead and wipe my sd card?
One of the best .. titanium backup
http://se.androlib.com/android.application.com-keramidas-titaniumbackup-xCzz.aspx
brilliant
that fits the bill perfectly.
can I wipe my sd card then? and then update the ROM? or are there essential files on the sd card?
There is no need to wipe SD card, do not wipe it, Titanium backup stores your data there.
Make backup of your rom first .... Really do it.
If something goes wrong, you can go back.
Do not delete the file "clockworkmod" it's your backup
Make a backup of the entire sd on your computer before you delete
thank you for your help guys
the reason I want to wipe the SD card is due to data stored on there from apps I have installed. As I am doing a clean install, I may not want to re-install the apps.
But I'll take your advise and not wipe the card. I'll just delete any obvious directories that are not needed.
Many thanks guys,

Buy a 2nd card, and do the new ROM on that, then you can test ;-)
lol good idea, I need a larger card
this is what I missed about XDA, iPhone forums aren't as helpful
OK I am confused now
I have flashed to LEEDROIDS rom, and all of my data and apps are still present. I have done no backup.
Any ideas how I can flash and delete everything and start over?
Many thanks

I can't believe what you have done to the ROM
it is BLAZING fast. WOW
my new hero, lol
Thought he did it ........ He did not backup either
I flashed Sandvold's ICS 0.8.1 yesterday, but after reading a few threads today I saw that it's better to do the custom install instead of the typical one. I did a nandroid and decided to simply flash the rom again without clearing anything.
It seems fine so far, but I'm wondering if this can lead to any problems?
Also, do I need to reinstall a2sd after re-flashing?
I think that if you downgrade from ics to gb than you need to make a full wipe but if you upgrade than I think it's ok

If you are with the exact same rom then a wipe shouldn't be needed and a2sd should stay if you don't wipe.
Try it and if it doesn't work do a full wipe I've never seen anyone say you'll break your phone if you don't wipe. Someone on Sandvold's thread recommended app extractor from play store as an easy way to restore after a full wipe. Didn't work for me but I only tried it once so you could check that out. It just restores everything from your nandroid

If u are flashing the same rom (newer version) u still have to wipe dalvik. Its better anyway just to do a backup then full wipe and flash the rom then restore
Sent from my HTC Desire
Always wipe Dalvik, sometimes, the rom setup menu does it automaticly.
Hi all,
I was wondering if there was any danger of restoring my stock 2.3.3 nandroid I made before I flashed an ICS (AOKPlay) ROM? Will it restore the original kernel and everything as well? The GB experience on the R800x vs ICS to me is much better.
Thanks!
EDIT: Answered my own question. Thanks anyway. Mods can close!
I tried this and it didn't turn out very well, lol! I think it has something to do with the very different frameworks of Cyanogen and Sony
Try flashing the orginal kernel first, factory reset thru CWM along with wiping cache partition, dalvik cache, and battery stats. Then restore the Nandroid Backup. Worked for me, hope it works for you.
Push comes to shove, you may have to use Flashtool to restore the original, stock, ROM and then root it and all that pretty stuff. This is what I did because I wasn't at my home computer with all my resources.
Hope this helps
Edit: Oh, you found the answer, lol. Sorry.

Cool, didn't work out so well for me xD
This is a very noobish question that I couldn't even find a post about it on the forums. Here's the situation: I'm running ics by Lord Clockan on my phone. I'm going to make a backup of it and then flash jellytime by randomblame today. I know I need to do a full wipe before I flash jellytime. If I want to switch back to ics tomorrow, do I need to do a full wipe again before flashing my backup? I don't flash roms very often, and never backups, so, someone please guide me!
When you restore a nandroid backup from recovery you don't need to perform a wipe, only when flashing a new rom

Thank you (I'm out of 'thank you's for the day). So after I flash jellytime, I can constantly switch between ics and jt without wiping anything, since they're both nandroids?

I wouldn't do that if I were you, it's always best to full wipe when changing stuff...

I have to agree, keep a current nandroid of your daily rom and if you want to play with JB do a Full wipe install as it is progressing quite quick.
I tought I need wipe after retore.

Well if you wiped after restore, you wouldn't have anything on your phone, wouldn't you? The best rule of thumb to go by is this: Whenever you're flashing a kernel/gapps/whatever that doesn't change your ROM, wipe cache and Dalvik. If you are flashing a new ROM or restoring a nandroid, do a full wipe (system, data, cache, Dalvik).
Good information from all of you since I also thought about these questions.
Will a backup from clockworkmod also backup apps and settings aswell or is titanbackup needed here?
Desire HD via Tapatalk 2
It backups everything, so no need for Titanium when you are restoring a nandroid, you only need it when you are switching between ROMs.

I am not a pro so please correct me if i am wrong and thank me if i am correct XD
here the step normall i do before flash another rom
>Backup alll Apps (i am using Titanium Backup)
>Flash Full Wipe ZIP ( find at ARHD page )
>FLash ROM ( what ever you wanted )
if you wanted to flash back to another rom then do back again from step 1 .
Hey guys i just updated to the ICS 8.5 final final version, i just wanna know if i want to switch back to the CM7 can i copy the rom onto my sdcard install the zip file through the recovery mod? Or do i have to make a restore to the cm7?
I am a bit confused wanna clear that up a little

You could have used the same thread buddy
Either way is fine with any rom.
You can mske a backup of whatever you are using, flash a new rom and then revert to the backup if you want.
Or you can just start all over and flash another rom. You need to full wipe always.

I've never found any bugs with a nandroid backup and have used it on multiple devices.
Sometimes if you restore app data using something like titanium you can get probs depending on the rom but nandroid backups are fine.
last time i used nandroid on sabsa prime 3.0 i got bootloop... just wanted to warn prospect since lots of people got those problems even with nandroid.
Gesendet von meinem HTC Desire HD
So technically the only time one should perform a nandroid backup is when he/she wants to switch back to the stock fimware otherwise "install zip from sdcard" is better
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium
No.
You can make a nandroid backup anytime you want and restore it. It is advisable to make backups before flashing anything to the phone. Mods, scripts, etc. Just in case something goes wrong. That way yoy can go back right where you left it.
The other member, seems to have been talking about that particular rom, however strange it may sound. And there is always the possibility that in that case, either the member did something wrong or it was an isolated case.
