Is there a way to reflash the stock rom to my Sprint Evo 4G without rooting/unlocking the bootloader with s-on? I'm having some issues with random restarts, fc's, etc. and I'd rather not mess with rooting, etc.

Yup. Just run the RUU for the latest stock ROM.
Running an RUU will wipe all of your apps and data, so if you want to save anything be sure to back it up. You can backup apps without root, but you can't backup their data.
If the RUU doesn't fix your problems, take it to a Sprint store and have them look at it. You may be able to get a replacement.
And you're right, it's not good to attempt rooting when the phone is having issues unless you've tried everything else and can't get a replacement.
Good luck!

If in the future the EVO needs to go for service, could I just flash a stock ROM after a Nandroid backup and bring it in to Sprint.
I would even remove the backup and put it on my PC.
Obviously if they looked very hard, I guess they could see the root. But would not returning the phone to a stock ROM, solve most issues with Sprint?
Would I need to flash anything else but the ROM?
I just tried to load the HTC update 3.26.651.6 to 3.29.651.5 on an unrevoked EVO and ended up getting the little droid dude and a triangle with a exclamation point inside of it.
What does this mean? Is this an error and/or was I suposed to do something to load the software? Do I even want or need this update? Tethering at 4G is currently working great w/o the update.
same thing happened to me.
I think I'm just gonna install the fresh rom through recovery

It's probably failing if you removed any of the stock Sprint applications.
This is also assuming you are running the stock ROM.
The main reason to get the 3.29 update is that this unlocks the 30FPS cap on the EVO. The average FPS on this kernel seems to be in the low 50's. Everything feels pretty snappy. Really good update.
I'm really against updating OTA through Sprint when you're rooted, since bad things may happen (lose root, etc).
3 methods you can do:
1. Install the stock ROM backup as it was when you first rooted (you did backup immediately after rooting before you did anything,... right???). Then run the update and let it break root. Then run Unrevoked 3.21 again.
2. There's a method in the Development section on how to force the 3.29 update on your phone.
3. Install a custom ROM that includes this update. (Fresh 3.3.0.1 I know uses this update)
Thanks for the clues.
I do not beleive that I removed any of the stock apps and my rom should be stock. Yes I am locked at 30fps & I have heard good things about the battery life associated with the upgrade. I guess I started running before I was walking so I only did several drag and drop backups. I have since TB and nand backed do not like the Sprint upgrades, tried anyway and it did not work. Downloaded dev upgrades and will attempt them.
Thanks and sorry about the learning curve issues.
I too am getting the Triangle/Exclamation Point & Droid Dude after attempting to update....ugh, how do I fix???
Sprint updates do not work on a rooted device. Un root or re-rom
If your rooted do not ever try two update your phone via Sprint you could brick phone.

Every time I try to it freezes and then reboots my phone. When the phone turns back on, the app isn't installed.
It's been doing this to me with every app I try and download. (I keep getting that annoying voicemail update notification, also any apps I have from the market don't install.)
I originally had it rooted, then updated to the 3.29 (dumb idea, I know) and had an issue with the install, fixed that and now it won't install apps.
My question is this:
Should I take it back (to best buy, where I got it) and have them just replace it, or would re-rooting my phone (I'd probably use unrevoked 3.21), and flashing a new ROM (I've had my eye on Myn's Warm twopointtwo) possibly fix it?
can anyone offer some insight?

I would say re-root, wipe everything, then flash a new ROM. That will probably fix it. If it doesn't, you have something very wrong.

yeah, its that "very wrong" thing I'm worried about. I just want to be sure that I'm not gonna get stuck with a bricked phone or anything like that.
I was going to do unrevoked 3.21, but once I started it up it told me if there were any problems with my phone that I shouldn't do it.
So I came on here and decided to ask for help.
How did you originally root? If you used Unrevoked Forever you can easily re-root from stock without have to run Unrevoked again.

I used simpleroot OTA 1.47.651.1 edition.
it said one click root, so I used it.

Thats the one I used
It's hard to say. It you have PRI 1.77 (which you probably got from the OTA update) and no other signs of rooting (Superuser app, Titanium Backup, etc.) you may be safe taking it back to Best Buy. I don't know how well they look for signs of rooting before doing warranty repairs/replacements.
Between taking it in and trying to re-root, I really can't say which is riskier.
ok so I fixed it by rooting and flashing a new rom. The problem seems to be with the OTA rom, for some reason it wouldn't allow new programs.
weird.
thanks for the help!!

yeah I thought of this too and figured it had to be a problem with the rom. So I rooted and flashed and now it is working.
edit:I did have the superuser app. Didn't work tho, obv. but I had it.
thanks for your help!
Going from 4.22 to 4.24 OTA if you kept it stock and rooted will keep the root?
Going from 4.22 to 4.24 was just bug fixing and does not touch any part of the phone other than those bugs?
okay, so is this true? I have yet to see a real answer of yes or no. I saw people with 2-3 posts saying it. but need an expert opinion on this? It takes a long ass time to put my phone back to how it was when I do a full wipe/flash. just trying to save some time. Don't have time to sit and wait 2-3 hours for my phone to recover. so the OTA doesn't in any form or way touch bootloader or root or anything that would cause damage to the OS? of course talking about the 6M one. lol

I wouldn't chance it. There were a couple of OTA's back in the day that didn't touch the bootloader (that I was aware of) that caused people to lose root. In particular this affected me because one of the updates didn't have a root exploit and I needed to wait a week or two to root my phone (so...awful...haha)
I mainly want to know if someone has done it on this exact update and if it worked or didn't work. :-D

The only people who would have done it are people who don't read in the first place. If they did read, they'd know that nobody recommends accepting an OTA when you're rooted. So since anyone who's tried what you're asking doesn't read, they won't have read your post either.
You will lose root access when you accept the OTA. Normally you can get it back if you're S-OFF, though there's always some level of risk if they really wanted to get serious about locking people out. But there's no reason to try, since you can go here and just flash a rooted version of the ROM. You'll end up doing that anyway if you want to have root access, so you're wasting time and taking a risk by accepting the OTA.
You should be able to flash the updated rooted rom without wiping data -- just wipe cache and dalvik cache and then flash it.
I'll try it next weekend. lol. just didn't want to spend time doing it. haha

Use recovery to do a nandroid (include android_secure and ext3 in the backup if you use them), and then there's really no risk of losing your setup. You can always restore back to where you are. A Titanium Backup run is also quite useful. But like I said, you should be able to flash the rooted 4.24 ROM over the rooted 4.22 you're running with only a wipe of cache and dalvik. That's basically how the OTA does the upgrade for non-rooted users.
Yes you can update without losing root as long as you have used either the newest unrevoked method for evo's OR unrevoked forever. Just do not update over the air, as in just download it but do not install it. Follow this link step by step:

It's never a good idea to accept an ota update if you are rooted.

But that's if you're going from the old one to the completely new one. I'm going from 4.22 to 4.24
The instructions given are flat out wrong and don't even work. the OTA isn't in the cache folder. I've checked. errrrrrrrr. sounds like it needs to be updated. that thread is clearly upgrading to 22, not 24.
Well, I'm just going to use clockworkmod to install it. lmao Will this work?
Flash one of the roms in the development section. Wipe cache and dalvik like stated and go on about your way without risking your root status.
Besides that, if you did first flash a deodexed 4.22 from here and try to apply the sprint 4.24 patch you will have a system conflict between the odex and deodex files
To help answer your question, if you're currently rooted and accept the OTA, you will loose root access, BUT as long as you don't flash the S-On tool you will still be able to flash after downloading a custom recovery such as Amon_Ra and then continue flashing whatever you want. I have done this to many phones since the update and haven't had a single problem yet. But if you flash S-On, you're screwed until they are able to hack the new Bootloader.
Even after accepting the OTA and having S-Off, your hBoot will update but you Can go back to Froyo if desired and hBoot will change back to Froyo compatible 2.10 not 2.16. So I hope my answer helps and will let you know what you're looking for!
I installed the 22 odex version. and I am now at this second doing the 24 odex version. so hope everything goes well. haha. if not. made a backup. so hope the backup works. :-D Just trying to avoid spending hours on getting my phone back in order because downage means money and time lost.
EDIT= so CONFIRMING that going from 22 to 24 with going through clockworkmod completely works without any issues. I was just afraid to do it. hahahaha just as long as you don't wipe data and cache
So is the Galaxy Nexus worth rooting right now? I understand when i root everything will be wiped. So im just wondering should i root now? I'm not seeing any ROMs thats catching my eye. Maybe when Cyanogen comes with a official ROM.
It's not rooting that wipes, your phone, it is unlocking the bootloader that does it. But unlocking the bootloader is needed to root. So that's being pedantic.
If you plan on staying with stock, but being rooted, then you should do it before setting up anything on your phone, because you will have to redo everything.
If you are planning on flashing a new ROM anyway, then I don't think it matters because most new ROM installations I've seen tell you to do a wipe anyway.
But I would suggest rooting the first thing, just so you can install titanium back up. This will let you restore app data after flashing a new ROM. Unless you enjoy replaying all 100+ Angry Birds levels and re-earning whatever achievements that you spent hours earning.

Being able to use Titanium backup and doing backups in CWM is worth it.
I don't see a need to rush out and root.
Custom roms are still in their infancy. Google seems to be pushing updates pretty quickly too. Custom roms still aren't perfect yet.
There are launchers and mods that seems pretty cool but thats up to you. I know once I start down the dark path of flashing... I won't come back. So I'm sticking to stock for a while until Google calms down on the updates.
